My friends took me to this hidden gem. Such a quaint place. They just expanded their space and it's very rustic. Amazing Italian cuisine. It's beer and wine only. But they compliment their meals so well. Our waiter was knowledgeable and the owners son too. So it runs in the family. As I'm dining here, I can't wait to come back here and try more of their menu. Give them a shot. I think u will love it. The prices r sooooo reasonable.

To be honest, I really don't understand why this restaurant is considered Italian, it really feels like it's broadly European that's trying to be somewhat Italian. Had dinner with a few friends and the service was slow because there was only one person in the front managing all of the tables. As a table we spilt the special Caesar salad, and it tasted almost like there was dill in the dressing. I've never had a Caesar salad that tasted like that, and I wouldn't order it again. I tried the orange roughy special, which was essentially piccata sauce, and it was decent but on the salty side. Meanwhile my partner ordered the chicken schnitzel, and while I thought it was fine, it was also very salty (and I LOVE salt). Both dishes came with a pepperoncini that really didn't seem to belong with either meal. We also tried the strudel that people recommended, but it was just okay, I have had better. All and all it was fine 2.5/3 stars worth to me. It was edible, it was okay, but nothing to come back for and expensive for what it was.

We came here for dinner and before coming here, I was really hoping to give the restaurant a chance (despite reading the reviews). First off, a good thing is that reservation is super easy to make. When we arrived, there were only a few patrons there so we were easily seated (we arrived much earlier). For our entrees, we ordered the Beef Short Rib (grassfed) Red Wine Coffee with garden herbs served over butternut squash. The fiance ordered a Filet mignon over medley of vegetables. I found the beef short rib to be super salty (the roof of my mouth felt very sore afterwards). The butternut squash was actually a disappointment, it was very mushy/grainy. As for my fiance's filet mignon, I didn't really like it. It was missing that soft moist bite. Service was decent, however I felt that there were missing elements in both our dinner plates. Since this is in downtown El Segundo, there is street parking.

Roasted Lamb - falling off the bone

What makes the eating out experience memoriable? Only you can answer that. For me, the Gesalt of the resturant has to work. We frequently fly out of LAX and yesterday was no exception with my girlfriend flying back East on a red eye. To make travel a little more enjoyable we leave early and pick a place by LAX that is easy to get to and then to the airport. Wow - it was really easy to get to and from. And in a nice walking neighborhood. The Chef Hannes Resturant has a great vibe. The windows, the rustic walls, the old posters and original artwork just make the Chef's place just work and it's been around for 25 years. The menu is focused which I appreciate. It's like being in a little village in Spain, Italy or France where the menu reflects 4 or 5 things wonderfully prepared entres. And everything was wonderfully prepared, tastefully and creatively presented. We shared a ceasar salad with fresh warm crutons, nice dressing and fresh ground parma. I ordered the meatload ( think your Mom's with a touch of italian herbs then seared on the bottom for some crunch) on angel hair with a brilliant sauce that clung to the pasta and full of taste. My girl friend had the slow roasted lamb shank that fell off the bone. And we shared the apple strudel which was also creatively presented with added too! I had an amazing cup of coffee! I really wanted to try some of the wines listed on this huge chalkboard. Sadly, I knew I had to go back out in LA traffic. We decided well come back another time and on Thrusdays they have the Farmers Market less than a block away!

Ask the Community - Chef Hannes Restaurant

Do they have gift cards / certificates available?

    Yes

I’m attending this restaurant with a meetup group for lunch. Any suggestions for parking and should I allow extra time for parking?

Some metered street parking is available. Main street also has a couple of small lots. You should be able to find a place within a half block of the restaurant.

We loved that it was empty and open before dinner, most places close in between lunch and dinner. So it was great to see it open to take advantage of their delicious crepes. We were surprised to learn there had been a change in management, as we have enjoyed dining here many times in the past and have always had positive experiences with both the food and service. This visit was noticeably different. The manager/server who attended to us came across as cold, unfriendly, and rude, which made us feel unwelcome. In addition, the food was very bland and dry, far below the quality we had come to expect from this location. Because we have been loyal customers over the years, this experience was especially disappointing. I am currently waiting to hear back from the owner, as I hope these concerns will be addressed. At this point, we are uncertain whether we will return to this location.

Right when we walked in, we were greeted by the hostess/waitress (possibly the owner?) who instantly made you feel welcomed with her energy. She seated promptly, and gave us some recommendations. We ordered the Pate en Croute, duck Burger, canard Confit, and peach Dessert. We enjoyed all the food, but felt it was a little under-seasoned (salt). The peach Dessert was a nice conclusion: coated with white chocolate, encased in a fluffy marshmallow-like texture, and filling inside, and not too sweet. They also have specific dinner events (by RSVP) on select nights! They have crepe, paella, and French dinner nights throughout the month. Overall, we enjoyed our late lunch, and would definitely come back to try their paella night!

THIS IS LONG CAUSE I LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH!:…read more Soooo: SUMMARY (FOR THE RUSHY RUSHY PEOPLE): great vibes has French music of different genres flowing in the air. DELICIOUS food (kudos to the chef). Good portions for the price. Food takes time cause it's bomb. #DontRushGreatness. Wonderful staff! Would love if open more hours to resume fun events ex: wine tasting open mic??? more chargers needed, clean bathroom. Parking lot small and tricky. Please be careful on that intersection. Traffic lights are meaningless to some. Beautiful decor ! And they change the menu :-) Go there it's lovely. Tell your crew but keep it classy. THATS IT! Phew. NOW GET COZY AND READ ON IF YOU HAVE THE TIME: The owner and her staff are so kind warm and welcoming! I've been coming here for what feels like a year? You walk in and feel instantly relaxed from the decor. Think ; vacation spot , "White Lotus" season 1 and 2 vibes. TIMING: The morning time is really popular from what I hear and there is sometimes a line. However go between 11-2:30 (closing time) and very calm 90% of the time. If/When there is a line people are so nice! No joke! Maybe because it's not a place you rush things. Everything is made fresh so some dishes take a bit of time. So I suggest going when you are not in a hurry. Or order to go. AMBIANCE: If you are a music lover, and enjoy international grooves, a French radio station or playlist is always on. Plus it's different styles of French music! There was rap, hip-hop, jazz, alternative. So while in line you'll probably find yourself tapping your feet. I really like the booths for the privacy. When it's busy those go QUICK. The basket chairs look glorious but I haven't tried them yet. Not sure if they are still up. But one day I'll nest in there...one day. NOW THE FOOD! The menu changes every so often which is exciting ! If you are minding your dollars and cents it's a bit pricey. HOWEVER, the food is great quality and from the dishes I've ordered the portions are a good size #WorthIt. I like their coffee and that they have milk alternatives. And I appreciate the menu is not overwhelming. If there are condiments they don't carry (due to the authenticity of the restaurant) they always recommend something comparable as a substitute. RECOMMENDATIONS: I dislike eating breakfast when it's not time for it. But when I come here? It's on! The goat cheese omelette is fluffy and delicious!! I add chicken to it que magnifique! (Hope that's right as I'm not using Ai in this moment . Apologies if it's wrong corrections welcome #respect) They had a juicy burger and it was so good they run out of it pretty often. The lox bagel has a decent amount of lox! The home fries aren't greasy (great with avocado for some reason) Bannana Bread is so tastes and moist! It feels more like a cake. I'd buy the whole basket but that would be unfair to "the OTHERS..." Just kidding lol. The lemon squares are about to be my new addiction too. But they keep it real sometimes popular dishes run out. And that's ok, it's a boutique spot. It's also a mini-rush when you order a dish that's finally available lol. ADVICE: PURPOSE: I'd come here for a smoothy after a workout. Breakfast with peers or a more relaxed business mtg. if you're in an ASL (Or any group/team) club like I was this is a great place to meet. The light is fantastic! They have their own wiFii. CLEANLINESS/KIDS? Their bathroom is clean. Place is spotless. You might see a table with dishes to be cleared but it's never overwhelming or a bunch of tables in that state so, chill! I'm not sure I've seen a lot of families with kids in there. And I'm not sure if I saw a changing table. I have a 4 year old so I look at things like that but I know they'd be very accommodating. DRAWBACKS?: I've only seen one outlet over a booth in the middle? So make sure you are charged up or have a looong chord. They also close pretty early when I'm there at 2:30pm. CREATIVE PLANS FROM STAFF: However, one of the baristas shared with me they used to be open longer. But due to Covid it's been slow. So they adjusted the hours. They have lots of ideas if things pick up. And I think in the past they did wine tasting with selections directly from France! I think they could have a fabulous open mic poetry night. Maybe even a small live band every so often. Game night classy style? hehe. If they allowed the tables to be moved I'd do an art premiere there! No joke #Ideas. YOU, yes you: Step one? Get more awesome people to adore this place like I do. So check it out! Enjoy the food and ambiance and the kindness. I'll see you at the open mic wish I could add a pic but maybe next time!

The light creamy tomato-based dressing with sliced mushrooms was pleasantly flavorful. Both shrimp and scallops were of good size, fresh and juicy.
