Have been here several times for take out, mainly because it's walking distance from home so it's really convenient to swing by. They are always quick and they give you a 10% discount for your takeout orders. We usually get any one or more of the following items: honey walnut prawns, combination chow mein or chow fun, garlic eggplant, combination fried rice, salt & pepper chicken wings. My wife and I tried China Chef last night as we hadn't been there for years. We ordered the Salt and Pepper Calamari, Orange Chicken, Chicken Salad and Chow Fun with the angel hair noodles. I would give this place negative stars. I had take out on two different occasions and both times I had a dish that was inedible. The first time I ordered the shrimp egg foo young and there were egg shells in every single bite I tried. I don't know how you can have egg shells throughout the dish, unless someone threw the entire egg in the batter. I know this is unbelievable, but absolutely true. I examined the entire dish and every piece had crushed eggshells. After avoiding China Chef like the plague for a few years, I decided to give it a second chance and ordered take out of walnut prawns. Another dish that was inedible. The prawns were really sour. I always order food from here when I'm too lazy to cook or simply just want some good Chinese food. The prices are good, and the service isn't too bad either. Their fried rice, pan fried noodles, and string bean chicken are what I usually order. I'm basing my five-star rating on the one dish I always get when I eat at China Chef: the tangerine beef. This restaurant does a great job cooking it. Each piece of beef is coated and fried really crisply, and then a whole pile of it is tossed with a sweet and slightly spicy sauce. YUM!! I've tried this same dish at over a dozen Chinese restaurants in the East Bay, and almost everywhere else the beef ends up soggy and lumpen. China Chef serves it crisp and light; and to me that makes all the difference. read more

The restaurant has new owners and new cooks. The new staff are very nice and friendly, but the food does not taste as good as before. It's too bad the food quality has gone down. This restaurant has been my family's go to Chinese restaurant for 5+ years. They have great, welcoming service and the food is fresh so they have no problem preparing it the way you like (no oil, more curry, ect.) We mostly order take out and the staff is friendly and professional same as when we dine in. My favorites are the crab wontons, won ton soup, Hunan chicken, singapore noodles!!! Nothing is overly greasy or salty...just the way I like my Chinese food :) read more

The food is quite good and they are one of the few restaurant's that give a 10% discount when you order take-out. Only it's a little annoying that they say they really only give you 8% off. Decent and relatively cheap. Actually, not bad at all. I've had mostly the rice plates here for lunch, and -- strange as this may seem -- you actually get more meat than rice. Yeah, I know. Usually you get a big mound of rice and the meat hidden somewhere inside. You gotta calculate how much rice to have with a strip of beef otherwise you're left munching on rice for the second half of the meal and that's never fun. Not at this place. They're generous with their portions. And, as a bonus, it tastes pretty good too. So, here's the thing. I've had better Chinese food, but this place isn't bad. If I were to go with just the food alone, this place would get a decent 3/5. But food to price bumps it up another notch. Great place to go for a sit-down lunch. Service is fast, people are nice, price is decent, and it doesn't seem to get too crowded. Believe me, you'll enjoy it more here than the crapfest at ,say, Panda Express. read more

Wow! I cannot believe I have lived around the corner from this place for 9 months and never came in. I finally went in for take-out last night after a terrible day and figured delicious Chinese food would lift my spirits. I was right! I ordered three items: Pork Lo Mein, MaPoTofu, and Shrimp Egg Foo Young. All three totally hit the spot with flavors definitely unique to each owns dish. All my boxes were full to the brim, sauced and steaming. My Lo Mein had the nice thick round noodles, the only thing I would change with it would be to add more vegetables. But the flavor and the amount of pork was great! MaPoTofu is one of my all time favorite dishes that I fell in love with while living in Asia. It was so good! The consistency of the tofu was soft but held together (not falling apart) which means that they cooked it fresh when I ordered it. It took all my self control not to down the entire container myself! I prefer things a little bit more spicy and added sirachi sauce (red spicy sauce) at home. Next time I will ask them for extra spice! Shrimp Egg Foo Young, oh my! I used to never be a fan of this dish and I remember my father always ordering it growing up. A long time ago I found an egg foo young that I liked that was fluffy and full of vegetables and meat with a complementing sauce. I figured I would never find another to compare. China Chef has it! Fluffy egg omelets full of vegetables like bean sprouts and carrots topped with a sweet/salty sauce and shrimp. It was so good ate a whole omelet before I realized it! The total of my order came out $21. You get a 10% discount for taking out the food. What a steal! I had leftovers for lunch today and dinner tonight! It makes me so sad to know I had been missing out on this place since I have moved out here. Now that I know I am looking forward to more entrees. Don't let them trick you with the free soda coupon! I tried to use it and they were completely rude and told me I couldn't use it unless I dined in with a group, even though the coupon doesn't say that. So then they handed me my food and didn't even say thank you or goodbye and just walked away. Both were managers too! Foods average nothing special but it is good.. For 3.95 extra, you get rice, egg roll, 2 crab puffs, AND hot and sour soup! My fave!!! Well worth it! My recent order = $40 and I'll get about 6 meals from it total including leftovers for lunch for 2 days! Awesome!!! I highly recommend the Orange Chicken, Sesame Chicken, and honey walnut prawns. I absolutely love this restaurant when I'm craving Chinese food. The delivery guy is always on point. I sat and ate in the restaurant at least twice now and I'm surprised how much better the food is. Lemon chicken was crispy, sweet and sour pork is juicy and beef and broccoli is perfect. Eating in the restaurant gives more perks like soup and rice. Between two of us, we usually cant finish the dinner meal since it's so much food. We always end up taking the leftovers home for lunch the next day. Would highly recommend this place. read more

Hit and miss. Mostly miss is the consensus among myself and my friends. I will try just about anything twice. Despite the recommendations that my friends gave me against dining here, I decided to give it a shot. My first experience wasn't bad. I tried the lemon chicken (which is pretty hard to mess up) and it wasn't bad. About Panda Express quality so nothing spectacular. I figured that my friends were just being picky so I went back a week later and ordered Mushu Pork. It was sub par but what earned the one star was the steamed rice. I don't know how it is possible to screw up white rice, I mean owning a rice cooker myself makes it sooo easy. For some reason China Chef served me up something that smelled like what I can only describe as "wet dog" If you've ever been around a canine who came in from the rain you know what I'm talking about. How is that even possible?!! Maybe they bathe their pets in the same pot..? The staff is friendly and the prices are a good value considering the size of the portions but be warned, the food might make you gag. read more

Closer to a 3.5 star because the proportion to the price is pretty even. I ordered the pork with string beans lunch special with fried rice. The pork was really good because there was a bit of crunch and a little bit sweet...best of all, tender. The string beans were al dente. The "fried rice" was just cooked white rice re-cooked in the wok. The portion wasn't that large, but the price was lower then the other restaurants around here that I've tried so far. read more
