I'm going to start off by saying that I've had nothing but good experiences with this restaurant UNTIL a couple of weeks ago and most recently today. I found metal from a metal Brillo pad in my food! The first time it happened the host (didn't get his name) was very nice and super apologetic that the metal was in my food (sweet and sour prawns). Host got my name and number and said next time that they would give me the same lunch special for free *AWESOME*. Now fast forward to today I called china chef and i got the same order as I started to eat I felt something hard and very metal like in my mouth as I was chewing, I was hoping that it was just a small shell from a from the shrimp as i pulled it out low and behold it was AGAIN metal Brillo pad. This time I went back to the place and showed the host what was in my food, and again he was shocked. Host was kind enough to give me a refund for it BUT I let him know that he needs to tell his chef or who ever is making these sweet and sour prawns to be more careful in how they are cleaning their area and so forth. People just watch out for this dish because twice now the metal has came up in my food. So sad to know that this keeps happening and is sadly making me not want to go there again. To China Chef PLEASE get it together and figure out how this mistake keeps on happening. read more

My husband and I got take out from here a year or so ago and it was GREAT! Ever since then we've been meaning to try it out again. The other day we stopped by for a late lunch. Sad to say, it wasn't anything close to what we'd had before. Maybe they have a new chef now? We got the chicken dumpling appetizer which were just slimy tasteless pot stickers. Then we got the salt and pepper prawns and mongolian beef. The prawns were just awful. The stuff they were fried in tasted almost like cornmeal, with a similar weird chunky texture. They were basically inedible. We were warned the mongolian beef was spicy and we LIKE spicy so we were looking forward to it. Unfortunately it was pretty bland. It seemed like after they cooked everything, they threw in some chilis. The flavor and spice wasn't integrated at all. It wasn't bad like the prawns, but it didn't have much flavor. The hot tea was good. The service was excellent. The food was so disappointing I'm not sure if we will go back. I remember the food being SO GOOD that first time so maybe we will give it one more try. But NEVER getting the salt and pepper prawns again. read more

Their food is consistantly yummy. Try their won ton soup, lemon chicken, pot stickers, and mushu pork dishes for some of my favorites. Great take out service too! Prices are reasonable and portions are perfect! Take out is the greatest business. The place itself, though clean, lacks atmosphere for a sit down dinner. The owners are hard working lovely people. They deserve to be patronized especially during tough economic times. The food is very good. We are regular customers ever since they opened and will continue to eat there once a month if not more. If this was on the peninsula I might have only given it a four star review, but since it is in Contra Costa county, a place with very few great places to eat I've decided to give them a five star review. I have only eaten here a few times but they seem to be a step above many of their local competitors. They use only white meat chicken so no gristle or fatty bits like some other Chinese restaurants suffer from. Their fried meats, like the orange chicken, almost always come out of the kitchen crispy and not soft. Their rice is good, the wait staff are friendly and accommodating, although I usually take my food to go. A great place to go in Pleasant Hill if you are a fan of Chinese food. read more

YUM. It's either hit or miss for me when it comes to Chinese food and China Chef is a total HIT! I love their Mongolian Triple Crown? (not sure if that's the right name) but it has a combination of shrimp, beef and chicken in a mongolian sauce. The only reason I gave 4 stars, is because I have only been there once, and didn't try a wide variety of foods... Hubby got Chicken chow mein and the sizzling iron platter (meat and seafood combo served on a molten-hot platter) and I got Happy Family, which was essentially the same thing. The meats were all incredibly tender, I was surprised how delicate and perfectly cooked the scallops were... hard to find places that cook them just right! Lots of creatively cut perfectly cooked fresh vegetables. The chow mein was SO GOOD, I never usually order it because it's, well, boring. So thank you yelpers for the suggestion. Walking distance to where we are staying, can't wait to go back and try the General Tso - it's my fave. Good service, wasn't crowded on a Friday night. Pretty big lunch plate for a little price. I love that they didn't dilly dally which is always good when you don't want to be away from the office too long. Everything was fresh and tasty but nothing to go ga-ga over. They offer 10% off take-out orders which may be a selling point for some. Only two very minor complaints: 1. if the speakers are pumping static: TURN EM OFF 2. the left over cafe art over the bar has to go...like yesterday I'll be back and look forward to converting Panda lovers at this place. read more

We we're craving Chinese food today, and since Mings is closed on Mondays, we decided to get take out from China Chef since it is down the street from us. We have had China Chef a couple times before and it has always been at least decent, but today proved we have been spoiled by the quality of Mings. We ordered kung pao chicken, black bean beef, pork chow mein and pork fried rice. The total was $28, which isn't bad, but you get what you pay for. The kung pao chicken was the only saving grace of this meal, it was the only dish with flavor. Nice amount of spice and combination of chicken and veggies. The rest of the meal was very disappointing. The black bean sauce on the beef did not taste like any other black bean sauce I have had. It tasted more like a brown gravy with curry in it. It was not good at all. There was also huge chunks of grisled meat that were inedible. The chow mein and fried rice had no flavor. I really mean no flavor whatsoever. They both just tasted like the oil they were cooked in. I am not a chinese food snob, but the crap at the mall tasted better than this. Hopefully it was just an off day, but I'm not sure we'd be willing to spend our money here again. read more

My friends and I drove by this place and were hungry so we decided to stop by here for lunch for the first time. The service was great and the waiter had much patience when he helped us translating the menu. As I notice, most Chinese restaurant either over seasoned their food or put too much salt/MSG. However, I find this restaurant using the most simple and natural ingredients while maintaining its wonderful taste. It was over all a great experience at China Chef and I would like to stop by again in the future. read more

My experience in one word: value. Came for lunch on a Sunday with large group of guys and everyone enjoyed our meal. Lunch specials provide a variety of options ranging from $7-10 and include Soup of the Day, salad, and Fried rice or white rice option. I got the Salt & pepper pork chops which were tender and savory and Hot & Sour soup was the soup of the day. They checked up on us well, were friendly, and even let us split the bill 14 ways. No personality but fast, decent service. I ordered my favorite--General Tso's chicken. DON'T BELIEVE THE PICTURES! Was very disappointed when the plate arrived. I asked if the chicken was fried, the waitress said yes. The pictured showed the chicken on top of a big mountain of broccoli. When it came, it was on a oval plate with just 4 pieces of broccoli. A small mound of rice (fried rice or white) and the chicken mixed with the broccoli, with white onions and cabbage? What the heck? Tasted okay, but it wasn't fried. Maybe it was dipped in oil to cook but had no batter. Probably better for you. Seemed like the pieces of meat where white breast meat. So even better. Not too exciting to me, but it was hot off the wok and decent flavor. I'll go back again and try something else to see if I should bump it up a star. Food was fresh and delicious. Very busy on Christmas Day, I had an hour wait in the restaurant for take out, ordered 20 minutes before I got there. The manager did give me the beer I ordered for free. Because of the wait. The staff were all working hard and every seat was full. About 10 takeout orders ahead of me. The manager did tell me that it is not usually that busy. Takeout normally takes less than 30 minutes, pick up only, no delivery. We didn't actually eat here or even stop in for pick up. We got it through door dash and got like 50 dollars worth of food for two people. We were really hungry. The BBQ fried rice is delicious. We tried the garlic lamb and that was really good as well and so were the egg rolls. Everything we had was really good. We probably would have gone there but we were too lazy to leave the house. Service is great here. They come to ask you if you need more water or saying how is the food. But the food i felt it was okay not that delicious as i had expected it would be. I have tried Szechuan chicken form different asian restaurants, all the time it tastes different from one another. The szechuan chicken is definitely not the item i will be getting on my next visit. I ordered at 5:30 for pick up at 6, my husband goes to pick it up and they inform him they couldn't read the ticket. ok no big deal... we give them the order and my husband proceeds to wait an hour to be told 5 more minutes. I go to call the restaurant to speak with them about what the hold up was and they hung up on me. To which my husband proceeds to tell me they are hanging up on everyone. He finally says he wants a refund and they tried to refuse to give him our money back! We ended up having to threaten to call the police if our money was not returned immediately( AN HOUR AND A HALF WAIT AT THIS POINT) Worst service I have ever had in any restaurant read more

I decided to try their online ordering system through yelp 24 while I was grocery shopping. The system worked fine. When I got there my order was ready. The lady asked me what I ordered and I started telling her, then she asked me if I ordered 4 items. I told her yes. I got home and unpacked what I ordered, however I was missing 1 shrimp fried rice order. I had ordered 2. I checked my email receipt to make sure I had ordered 2 and I did. I called the restaurant and told ten I was shorted 1 shrimp fried rice order, I told her I ordered 2, she checked her paperwork and she saw that. She asked if I would come back to restaurant and pick it up. I told her no. She the told me that the next time I come in I'll receive it at no charge. I asked her how will she remember me. She told me she'll have it on a piece of paper. It sounds kind of iffy to me, but I guess we'll see the next time I go in. read more

Maaaaan...whatever you do just keep driving!! This is not only the worst Chinese food I have had in my life but also the worst food I have ever had period!! We ordered fried chicken and crab puffs as appetizers and the chicken was not at all seasoned. I ordered honey chicken and fried rice and it came with some goop covered in cabbage or lettuce...I have no idea...all I know is it was fucking disgusting. Nothing we ordered was seasoned or what we were told we would get. Fried wontons had no cream cheese they were just chips. The "salt and pepper" chicken had imaginary salt and pepper and we still don't even know if it was even chicken. The egg rolls looked like skinny a** blunts and everything had nuts on it. Our plates were mostly vegetables and a bunch of bs we didn't order and weren't informed of coming with the meal. The waitress we had did not comprehend English well causing us to be hit with a $58.25 bill worth of Gahhdamn food we didn't eat. Like I said, keep driving because of you don't you'll leave unsatisfied with an angry stomach. My god this place needs to be shut tf down. read more
