My wife and I recently moved to Cali just down the street from China Express and it was one of our first stops to try. For the price and amount of food and its quality it's hard to beat. A perfect take out spot for a weekday lunch/dinner. I've loved the orange chicken, kung pao chicken, and one of my all time favorites is the sweet and sour chicken. The chicken fried rice is good too. Lunch is a great deal with the egg roll and wonton added for free. Looking forward to trying more items! read more

Best chinese food in the area i dont live close by jere anymore but there is times where i will go out of my way and drive the 20 miles to get a B plate combo the workers there are always nice and quick about their job this one of the last chinese food places that stack your plate good and the food is good. Horrible service! I ordered over the phone and she didn't let me finish and clicked, I arrive not greeted the older lady and the younger lady are talking to each other. She asks me if I placed an order I said yes, I let her know the rice is missing she said if you don't order it you don't get it I told her I tried but she clicked the phone she says ok and goes back and gets the rice I get home to find something odd in there I go back to her to show her the young lady responses ok what you want I told her I'd like my money back throws me 2$ in the counter and says ok go. I've been coming to this place for years and even though it's a tiny hole in the wall, it's flavorful and cheap and quick. I always get the fried rice with everything in it and the war wonton soup. Love these dishes. Make sure you get the side of chili because it goes great with the rice. read more

My family has been ordering takeout from this spot for years! It's true, big things come in small packages. For a family of 3 we always have leftovers for days. But it's been YEARS (like before covid time) that I have been calling to place an order of tomato beef and they tell me EVERY single time that they don't have tomatoes. Now the first few times okay maybe it's true, but for years you're telling me you don't have tomatoes?????? For years??? That's suspicious and weird for a food place to not have a produce like tomato. After years of asking im just annoyed at this point. The food at China Express used to be good. Before the pandemic last year I noticed their food wasn't the same. They gave me burnt rice with my order and there was very little chicken in my chicken chop suey. I decided to try them again after they reopened recently. I ordered shrimp fried rice and it was burned also. I took it back to them and they replaced my order with the same badly burned rice. Needless to say I won't be going back. I have frequented China Express since 1996. My kids would go through several boxes of the steamed dumplings. We moved from the area in 2006 but would stop in when passing by. Today I went back to order some dumplings, 5 orders, and some other goodies. Not disappointed! The dumplings have not changed and were delicious. My kids,now adults, began to reminisce about when they were young and all the food we had from China Express. The nostalgia was running wild. I'll never stop going as long as they are open. I used to visit here pretty frequently. I threw pottery at a neighboring studio...convenience, price, taste...it was a staple. Sadly, the last few times I've gone in I've noticed some questionable practices. Food and money handling without gloves. One time, the counters were littered with termite bodies. Yelpers! You let me down. I was craving Chinese food and this was close to where I was. I saw the 4 stars and decided to head over there. I made a mistake. One positive thing is they make it fresh. Well let me rephrase that. There was pre-cooked chicken, shrimp, beef sitting in stainless steel containers on the stove with raw eggs scrambled in another. Once you order they assemble all the ingredients and cook it in their woks. So, I guess it's fresh... I was disappointed with their pan fried chow mein that had too much sauce that it was difficult to mix without making a mess. The noodles were chewy and the flavor of the sauce was over powering. Ok note to self...never order the chow mein again. I also tried the lunch special shrimp with lobster sauce. Yes, there was plenty of shrimp but too many bamboo shoots and water chestnuts. Yes, it was filler but just a little too much if you ask me... I also tried the teriyaki chicken. Hmmm, it was more like chicken katsu. It was breaded with panko like breadcrumbs and deep fried. The teriyaki sauce was on the side which was a good thing because it was so concentrated! It was as thick as molasses. They needed to water it down or something because the flavor was too strong. Sorry, I have to complain about the fried rice as well. I know that it's just rice, eggs and soy sauce but how can you go wrong? Well, this place did. The rice looked like it was pulverized. You couldn't even see the grains of rice and definitely no flavor. The egg roll and fried won tons that come with the lunch special were stale and rubbery and no sauce to dip it in. The egg drop soup that also comes with the lunch special was eh, it's egg drop soup. Nothing much to write about. I tried to be open minded and I did not "judge the book by it's cover," this place is not worth the money I spent. read more

This is the best place to get Chinese takeout. Do not be fooled by the size or the appearance. I lived close by then moved to Wisconsin and still make it here to eat as often as I can. I bought food today and it tasted like it was from the prior day. The rice was hard and not fluffy. The shrimp was tough in all the dishes. The broccoli was dark green in color and very mushy. It was also floating in too much juice and there was hardly any beef. The braised shrimp was bad and lacked flavor. It tasted more like dazed shrimp. It's not a comparison to the same dish at Yang Chow's by far. I was very disappointed because my mom requested Chinese food for her birthday celebration. I can't say I'll ever return. This is without question the best chinese take-out in the San Gabriel area. The chains (like Panda Express) can't hold a candle to this place. The reason is simple: China Express uses fresh ingredients, and they make your order for you, on the spot. It is also without question an unattractive hole-in-the-wall, in a not-so-great neighborhood. But the place is squeaky clean. I won't call this the best or the worst Chinese food I had eaten, I have eaten a ton from NYC to LA. I paid $6.55 for a large lunch special, Kung Pao shrimp (see pic). The amount of shrimp was okay, there was a ton of asian cashews. The snow peas were fresh and the shrimp was typical frozen Chinese import farm raised 35/40 shrimp aka no color. The turnover as I was there was great so the chefs were very busy. Definitely Americanized Chinese food. For the quantity and cost, I gave this place 3 stars. If I am in the area again, I would try it again to see if they deserve a 4. read more

It's a small place, two tables inside, two tables outside. I usually go for lunch. Their lunch special comes with a vegetable roll and soup (egg drop or hot and sour, I like hot and sour). The food is more traditional, in the sense that it's more vegetables then meat. The sauces they use for the different dishes are very tasty. The service is efficient. You arrive, they says hello and you order. They give you your total, you pay. You don't here for the ambiance, you go here for a good lunch. I usually get two meals out of the lunch special. The food is good, the lunch special prices are great, the place is so close to home and so convenient BUT.... the young Asian cashier that is their most of the time is TOO LOUD for such a small place... you can clearly see how upset she gets when she calls out when an order is ready and the customer doesn't realize who it's for. We've been a fan of China Express for over 10 years. When we say 5 stars, we mean 5 stars for a take-out establishment. We do not compare take-out to white linen dining. But, for take-out, this place is tasty, nutritious, friendly, and makes very few mistakes. We love the ladies at the counter--they work hard, move fast and you have your food coordinated in 10-15 minutes while you wait. The guys who are cooking immediately behind them cook from scratch and fast--we have tried several Chinese take-out restaurants in Pasadena and we always come back to China Express. Oh, and did we mention the generous helpings? We regularly order broccoli shrimp, orange chicken, veggie eggrolls, fried rice, chicken egg foo yang. We highly recommend these dishes. Very small but all I needed was catering since the place I was originally going with flooded cause of the rain and they were very accommodating and made my order within 13-18 minutes.
