My first and last visit here. Was looking around Yelp for an alternative American Chinese resturant and saw all the positive reviews for this place. I ordered the chicken chow mein and the Hainan chicken shown in one of the pictures on Yelp, totaling $22. The food was unseasoned and there was a slight sour taste. By the evening I ended up with food poisoning. Id recommended avoiding this place, not sure how they're still in business. read more

I will be honest, the service is a little slow... BUT!!!! The food and staff are amazing! This isn't a chain, this is a mom and pop shop. Everything IS MADE FRESH TO ORDER! The Ambiance is your typical little Asian restaurant, nothing to exciting, but it's very clean and very well maintained. We eat here at least once a month and order take at probably twice a month! Quite honestly some of the worst food I've had in California. Wasn't expecting much from Bakersfield, but this was just plain bad. Food tastes canned, basically no selection of ingredients. Service was pretty slow. Waited some time to be seated, about 15 minutes for our drinks to get ordered. The two ladies who were running the front end were nice but weren't really into providing speedy service. Throughout our dinner we could hear their phone which the ladies answered with their headset on. They could definitely take down completely the 70's beaded curtain, upgrade from the oil stained pink table cloths, and get some new silverware that doesn't look dirty. Honestly not that much food for $23! I guess I ordered at the wrong time. But the delivery was free and arrived within 30 minutes (I live pretty close though), and the lady on the phone as well as the delivery guy were both nice. The food was decent, full of flavor. I loved the egg rolls, nice and crispy with tons of flavorful filling (mostly cabbage) and a yummy sauce. I also ordered pork fried rice and kung pao beef. China Garden is my place and yes, it is a hole in the wall, it is old inside (the decorations haven't changed for at least 20 years or more and the owner is the same. The food still tastes great! Don't come expecting a royal palace; embrace the place for what it is and trust me you won't be disappointed! I've been eating lunch and dinner since I was a small child and I'm so glad it's still amazing! Their lunch specials are off the chain as well. I recommend Kung Pao 3 Delights, Pot Stickers, House Special Fried Rice, Sizzling Rice Soup, Foil Wrapped Chicken...I can go on and on all night but I'll stop there...do yourself a favor...get over your need for a Panda Express atmosphere and enjoy some great food at a place that has been getting it right for years! read more

We were celebrating a quarantine birthday and decided to splurge so we ordered beef fried rice, chicken foo young, Kung Pao chicken, chow mein, some type of Rangoon and sweet and sour chicken. Everything was tasteless and some of the "rangoons" were missing filling while all our chicken dishes tasted like old, refrigerated meat. The beef fried rice wasn't bad and is probably the only thing I'd get from this place again, but even that tasted old. The stickers crumbled like chips and to top it off it was supposed to come with 8 and instead came with two oil drenched pieces of fried pastry wrap. I get cravings for Chinese food, every couple of weeks, and this place hits the spot. Full disclosure: I have never been here in person and was always hungry when I order, which makes my order at least 3x more than what I need= 50-60$ every order. I always order online via Yelp app and get delivery. This is probably my favorite Chinese restaurant in Bakersfield at this time. Why, you ask? because I do not need to call or come in contact with a human until the food is here. Sometimes, I'm exhausted and just want some darn comfort Chinese food. Here is what I recommend: 1. BBQ pork ribs - comes in 4 and pretty good- it's Cantonese style bbq, sweet and salty with no sauce but very oily. 2. Broccoli and beef. This is very different than the one you'd get from say Panda Express. They put bamboo in with their beef and broccoli and it tastes very different, but healthy. 3. Kong Pao chicken was okay, but not that spicy - I didnt like it that much but it tasted om. 4. Pupu platter- Do NOT get the pupu platter, it was too oily and there were things in there my mouth never wants to taste ever again. 5. Vegetable medley or whatever it was- ok, wasn't too memorable but filling. 6. Orange chicken- good.soft and fluffy. From what I heard. My kid and husband finished the orange chicken before I can get a taste. EVERY. SINGLE.TIME. so, I can only say that it is good. Try to order for lunch combos and they give you rice with your order. read more

Lam's was my first call, $40 minimum order, and I had to place it right away- there is no way I was ordering $40 worth of food for just me. Opposite page of Lam's in the phone book, was China Garden. They met my pre-req of having Chicken egg foo young...so I called. $15 min order for delivery-I ended up ordering $25 worth of food (way too much for me) and they had it delivered to my front door in southwest bakersfield in about 30 minutes. It was amazing, and scalding hot. I ordered the chicken fried rice, chicken chow mein with crunchy noodles, chicken egg foo young, and the terriyaki beef brochettes. So delicious but so much food, I ended up eating leftovers for breakfast and lunch the following day-which I completely loved. Fast, friendly, great food. All around win. read more
