Chip New York sells freshly baked cookies. The buttery fresh fist-sized cookies are fresh, delicious and come in new novel flavors like funfetti and blueberry cheesecake. The smell of fresh cookies is intoxicating while waiting. My friend heard about them and sent me a delicious looking video from Food Envy. I went to pick up some for her and me. The hype was high. When I got there at 11:07, there were 12 people in line already! The wait was about 30 minutes but once they sell out of one type of cookie, you have to wait for the next batch to finish to get another one. I waited about 45 minutes for 7 cookies. I loved the chocolate chip walnut and the blueberry cheesecake! The chocolate chip was gooey, filled with chips and walnuts. It was deliciously crunchy on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. The Blueberry cheesecake was so fun to eat! As someone who grew up in Astoria before it was "cool," Chip is the sort of place you want to hate. It's a place that sells cookies. Not just any cookies. Expensive cookies. However, the cookies are amazing and sometimes you just want a warm, ooey-gooey cookie to eat whilst taking a walk around town or doing errands. This was all due to waiting 1.5 hours after ordering pick-up on their website. Currently, the only way to grab these bad boys is online. But you have to understand the sheer determination of these customers to wait that long is also a testament to how good these cookies are. This location had four flavors at a time, just like LB. But unlike LB, they experiment with fun flavors. Today was s'mores and salted Nutella. 2. They are just as big but they are a little bit more underbaked. So you taste a much cakier texture where it's just too soft. 3. It's not as toasted like LB. LB cookies give you a crispy crunch on the outside and a soft gooey texture on the inside. Chip's exterior isn't as crunchy. 4. LB is a little more dense. Chip has a little bit more air. 5. I did the deal where if you buy 5, you get one free... boom! I sampled the four flavors of the day: chocolate chip, triple chocolate, white chocolate macadamia & butterscotch toffee. The chocolate chip is a revelation. It's easily the best cookie I've ever had in my life. It's warm & gooey on the inside and perfectly crunchy on the outside. They are served warm and perfect. I also had the triple chocolate warm, but much preferred the chocolate chip. I brought the rest of the cookies in a box home to Long Island. It would be easy to miss if you didn't know it's right by Mediterranean Foods and on the same side of the street. I missed the lines when I walked in after 12 and I'm glad I did. There weren't a ton of options when we stopped by around 4pm on a recent Friday afternoon but were still able to bring two home to try: toffee butterscotch and triple chocolate. Sadly the chocolate was a little try for me... it was soft and there were plenty of chocolate chips inside but a little crumbly. Wow. The cookies are amazing. If I just rated the cookies, I'd rate this place a 50/5. I ordered the chocolate chip cookies and I was not disappointed. I do wonder what would happen if this place was open past 10pm on the weekends, especially with all the nightlife nearby. This place would make a ton of money, but would easily run out of inventory too because of the small location. At the same time, the location borders the apartments from a zoning perspective, so having this place open in the late hours may cause issues from a noise perspective. Now, on a side street in Astoria in a space much smaller even than the tiny original location of Levain, Chip is making cookies just as good as, if not better (!), than Levain. One of the things about Chip that's better than Levain is that there is a much bigger variety of five different flavors to choose from, including always rotating specials. Sure, Levain has four flavors, but the two Dark Chocolate ones are pretty much the same, and Oatmeal Raisin would be silly to get when Chocolate Chip Walnut is there, so that's really like two kinds to choose from. At Chip, there are some cool, unique flavors, like a really gooey Blueberry Cheesecake and an even gooier Oatmeal Apple Pie. They also have all bases covered with stuff like a Funfetti and S'mores flavor. Comparing apples to apples though, you must try the Chocolate Chip Walnut. I got the triple chocolate chip cookie and the butter toffee chip cookie and they were so moist and delicious, I am still thinking about it a week later. Don't understand the hype. Don't get me wrong, they're not bad tasting, they're just not worth this hype I've seen over them where people race to buy certain flavors from charity events, and then throw their ticket on the ground and storm out in a huff when they realize the flavor they wanted was sold out. In my opinion, every cookie tastes virtually the same. If you grew up eating, or know how to bake homemade cookies, this is what they taste like. They all have the exact same flavor of "homemade cookie" no matter what the flavor is. Also, always underbaked, so the center is always mushy. I pop mine in the microwave when I reheat and the cookie always bubbles like it was liquid. Of the ones I've tried, the strawberry cream one had the most flavor, but even then, I feel like once you have a bite or two, the flavor kind of disappears and it just turns back into the standard homemade cookie flavor. The biggest let down of the flavors was the cinnamon roll, I guess I was expecting more of a cinnabon taste, so in that aspect I hyped myself up and then got let down. I'm glad there was a 2-cookie per customer on that day because I went there with the mindset of buying at least 6 of them, and I would have been really upset spending that money. I also don't understand the way they stock the stores, been there more than once where the day's cookie is just gone and they don't make more. Doesn't seem like they ever make enough for the demand. I went to this location and the Ditmars location, but the cookies are over baked and they aren't gooey on the inside like chip city advertises their cookies are.
