I had been promised a move by a certain date with a confirmation appointment of today with United Van Lines to move my daughter across country to begin grad school. I received an email from Mayflower a couple of time saying they were calling to confirm my appointment, then on the day of the appointment I was told the appointment wouldn't be until next week and they wouldn't be able to move for roughly 3 weeks. I used Chipman to help me move from the Bay area to North Carolina. This was my first cross-country move since I graduated college and I had a LOT more possessions to deal with this time around. I was nervous about the process, making sure that I got a fair rate, and that the company I used would be careful with my possessions. Chipman made the whole process so easy. When appointments were made, they were kept. When I was told someone would call, they would. I was kept updated every step of the way and it really helped take some of the stress off my shoulders. Lew Cramer was absolutely amazing. I never felt like another sale to him, but always that he genuinely wanted to help me. When I had a question at 7pm on a Friday, he was there. When I wanted to adjust my insurance a few days before the movers arrived, he was there. Jaimie Baleno was also incredibly helpful. She would call before and after each stage of the move to make sure the movers had arrived and everything went smoothly. She kept me updated about where my items were while in transit. The final time she called to ask about damage, I hadn't finished unpacking and so she waited a few days and checked in with me again. Little actions like this display of patience and understanding really set Chipman apart as a wonderful moving company. The movers used were very organized and really careful with my possessions. I have a stained glass window that is not easy to move and very fragile. It (and all my other art and furniture) arrived unharmed. Letting workers into your home can be uncomfortable, this experience with Chipman was incredibly positive. I highly recommend Chipman's service. Chipman did the estimate, walked us through options, advised us how many and which boxes to get to pack our stuff, and packed our stuff into 2 big container crates for the long haul, all in the middle of the pandemic. Gilbert & Arturo were great. I hired Chipman (as an agent for Mayflower) for the delivery portion of my move from Boston to San Francisco. There was a minor hiccup in communication between the two (I'm not sure who was at fault - hence the 4 stars instead of 5), and my initial delivery was missing some ~8 boxes. This could've been very frustrating/concerning, but as soon as we realized there was a problem, Gilbert took the lead and figured out the issue with no effort on my part. He was super accommodating to my schedule, and called me the next morning to arrange the rest of the delivery. They made my move very easy and painless. Would recommend. read more

DO NOT HIRE THESE BOZOS!!!!!! If you want lots of damage to your belongings, lots of lip service in support of their good work and no actual action to make good on complaints or results- then maybe you should look at these people. DO NOT HIRE THESE BOZOS!!!!!! My move began with a poor estimate of the size of my shipment that resulted in there not being enough room on the truck for my belongings. The driver called the office and they called me to ask for more money. Once the size was determined I felt that a second truck or van should be sent for the overflow. Their solution to the problem was to overload the space on truck by over stacking and compressing the load. For several hour I told the driver that all of this would not fit on his truck. He laugh me off and continued to cram my belongs into the van. The driver from 1-800-GOT-JUNK was more respectful of me and my boxes. My call to Chipman about the poor loading resulted in more lip service and no action. I spent most of the loading day inside to keep and eye to the loading crew. They were damaging thing even before the driver got a chance to smash them. One loader twisted a leg off a shelving unit while I stood watching him. I pick up the leg and handed to him. He threw it into a box and said that it would be handled on the other end. He then grab the companion piece and broke it in the same way. By now I realized had made a bad choice in picking a mover My badly crushed load left on its way. DO NOT HIRE THESE BOZOS!!!!! On the other end my shipment was unloaded and reloaded on the two smaller trucks. Based on the amount damage to the shipping boxes this must have been field day of drops and smash. Since I was not informed about this transfer I was not there to witness how much of the abuse was from the original loading and what was caused by careless handling during the transfer. DO NOT HIRE THESE BOZOS!!!!! I estimate that 90% of the boxes showed some sign of harsh treatment. All 5 of the 36" wardrobe box were crushed down to less that 24". One heavy wall carton that was marked very, very fragle glass had a 2 1/2" hole punch through one side (I could stick my hand inside the carton). Smashed corners, busted seams and crushed in tops and sides was most of what I saw. DO NOT HIRE THESE BOZOS!!!!! The crew that off loaded the smaller trucks stacked the damage cartons so high in my garage that the bottom cartons failed and drop the top cartons seven feet to the concrete. To assist in the over stacking of boxes with crushed tops several cartons were placed in the stacks on their sides. I received lots of lip service about how this was not the way Chipman did things but no action or feedback. Even among the boxes without visible damage the lower lever items inside were often broken- a clear sign the box had undergone a sever impact during the trip more than likely been dropped. This happened to dish packs and boxes with cardboard glass dividers despite foam, bubble wrap and/or packing paper. DO NOT HIRE THESE BOZOS!!!!! In addition to packed boxes the abuse continued on the furniture. Damage to recliners, wooden rocking chair, grand father clock, antique chain hutch and wall units were among the casualties of the heavy hand abuse. I have moved four times before (two were coast to coast) and I received more damage in this one move that the total damage in the four other moves combined. DO NOT HIRE THESE BOZOS!!!!! Because of my good past results in moving, I did not take out extra insurance but took the relatively low per pound base standard. Big mistake this results in a few hundred dollar reimbursement on a move of over $12,000 with many items damaged. Chipman wanted me to buy insurance- now it seams clear why! If you are still thinking about using these bozos, factor in your insurance costs- you will need the maximum. DO NOT HIRE THESE BOZOS!!!!! I will never know weather my bad results were the results of a couple of poor moving crews, the idea that the load was not insured well so the results did not matter as they did not carry a financial penalty or the apparent goal to simply move the required tonnage from point to point without concern for what is inside or how is marked. Chipman moved our things from San Francisco, CA to the Philadelphia area. We had a great experience. First, I liked that we got an accurate quote via video from Michael. No pandemic visit. Second, They lowered the price because I received a competing quote from a national carrier. Third, Jamie from logistics was absolutely on point through the whole process. Fourth, and my favorite part, was that Artur packed all of the items with his local crew in CA and drove the van himself to Philadelphia and unpacked it with his local Philly crew. He was accountable and in touch the whole time. Delivery was shorter than expected- 5 days. Finally, we used a 3rd party through Chipman to crate a glass coffee table. It broke in transit. Since we purchased full insurance, we were promptly reimbursed for the full cost. Is moving a hassle? yes! Is it a headache? Nope- not with Chipman. I highly recommend. read more

This is the first negative review I've written about a business, & it's not the sort of thing I like to do. But I think that it's important for prospective customers to know about my experience. I hired Chipman/United for a full-service move from SF to MA because I did not have time to properly pack my own belongings. I believed that I could rest easier knowing that the things I valued would be in the hands of professionals. Instead, I experienced what can only be described as heartache, as antique furniture was damaged & irreplaceable possessions were lost. I was in MA when the movers packed my things in SF. When they arrived a couple of weeks later, I found that artwork that I had declared as "high-value" had been carelessly wrapped, & other art had been wrapped in as little as one sheet of paper & simply taped across the back. The leg of an antique secretary, passed down from my grandmother, had been broken. The long list continues. Even worse, many items simply did not arrive--this included childhood photographs & poetry journals in which my own poems had appeared. In the process of filing my claim with Chipman, I dealt with a very nice person. I therefore assumed that I'd be fairly reimbursed for the damages & compensated in some way for the losses as well. Instead, while the adjustment department did offer compensation for the damages (the price they felt it would cost to repair the antiques, etc.), I was told that the movers had reported that all boxes that had left the original location had, indeed, arrived at the destination, & that their tracking system had not found the lost items. Therefore, Chipman concluded that these things had not, in fact, been lost in the move, & they would not offer anything at all. I then wrote a letter to the company describing what a fiasco the move had been from beginning to end (in MA, for example, the movers had tried to deny responsibility for reassembling heavy furniture taken apart in SF), & I asked for a refund for the cost of a move that clearly had not been handled according to professional standards. I was denied. I wrote a final time, pointing out that if nothing else, there was no way I could have somehow misplaced multiple boxes of my own possessions if they had actually been delivered to my home as claimed. I suggested that a compromise might be reached & a partial refund given for the move. I was told that Chipman's decision was final. At the point that I was ready to take my case to court (& I decided I would do this on principle), I realized that I could no longer do so because I had signed away my rights by accepting a check for about $600 for the damages to my belongings. I'm not sure whether I would have won my case--I'm assuming I might not have, as companies such as these tend to know their rights--but I'm upset that I wasn't able to take this before a judge, because I feel that what happened was so unjust. So I suppose I'm writing this now in part to ease that sense of injustice--& I do hope that it also protects others from the sort of experience that I had. read more

Worst experience ever! Paid $150 over quote, they showed up almost 7 hours late, broke my items without telling me and left a coat closet full. No discount and no return phone call! They also go by the name AmWest Moving Systems. (1551 Buena Vista Ave in Alameda) I called and got Richard Lee who came to my house to do an estimate. For a 2 br/2ba apartment they charged $650. So far so good. Richard assured me that I would pay the flat rate of $650 and "not a penny more". I had to give them a non-refundable $100 deposit on the spot and then pay $550 at the move. So the day of the move comes, they said to expect them between 12 and 2:00pm. At 2:00pm they called me to tell me they were running late, now expect them at 4pm. At 4pm, they called again and said to expect them at 6pm. They showed up at 6:45pm. They never offered any kind of discount or explanation for being almost 7 hours late. When they arrive, they tell me that they cannot fit their truck in the driveway so they have to park it out on the street. Since the location of the truck was now more than 75' from my apartment, they had to add a distance fee. This was infuriating because Richard was at my house and saw the driveway, why didn't he realize the truck wouldn't fit then? Apparently this was their 3rd job of the day and they were exhausted and made us feel like they were doing us a big favor. They finally finished at midnight. I had already been up from the night before to make sure everything was packed and ready for them at noon so I was too exhausted to argue with them. Richard said the distance fee added an additional $280 to the price but they were going to give us a "break" and only charge us $150. So I paid $800 for this company to move me 7 hours behind schedule and $150 over budget! Lastly, they broke an $80 planter and didn't mention it once, they just threw the pieces in our trash. They also left our entire coat closet unpacked so we had to go back with a pick up truck and get the rest of our stuff ourselves. Since the move, I have tried to call Richard every day for 5 days straight without one return call. Everyday I left him a voicemail and the last 3 days left the company a voicemail. Never heard from anyone! This was a terrible experience that added to the stress of moving. I feel bad giving a bad review because I actually think Richard is a nice guy and the movers did their job. But 7 hours late and no discount for my troubles, not cool. Save yourself the headache and use ANYONE ELSE! read more

We had a great experience, packers got in a tad late which made me think we were starting off terribly but from there it was a breeze :) Driver was great, our things arrived in perfect shape, only one item was lost/misplaced and they looked for it a lot and paid for it once they couldn't find it. I give them one star because I am forced to. Do not, under any circumstances hire this company!!!! They lost and damaged my belongings. The claims people are disgusting, and that is nicely stated. The packers did not finish packing. Even though they were tipped generously, they called the loaders and told them they were not tipped. After staying up all night finishing what we paid them to do, we were faced the next morning with a loading crew that was pissed and thought we did not tip...seriously. We did not find this out until they told us after we tipped them -- an unbelievable conversation. Moreover, they did not bring packing material or have any inclination to help pack what the prior team failed to do the night before. After three holes in the wall and damaged furniture, they finally agreed the door needed removal -- the first thing I told them needed to happen when they arrived -- in order to get everything out. Once items made it out, we later discovered, they piled all of my stuff on the sidewalk next to the truck and left it unattended...in the middle of San Francisco! They loaded items into storage that were supposed to go with us and items out of storage that were supposed to go into storage. For example, I had over a year with NO SHOES because, well, the designated shoe box was in storage and they could not retrieve it. The best part of this is that their inventory never reflected these errors, thus there is no valid inventory. Then after alerting them to these issues, when we returned, they sent the same crew. Who again, unloaded my belongings on the sidewalk and left it unattended in San Francisco. It was clear the day of the move that we had damaged items from the move and storage. It was also clear that we were missing boxes and items that Chipman was responsible for packing, storing and moving. Poof GONE!!!! The claims department is unbelievable. My move was in December. It is May and I do not have anything, including kitchen supplies to cook a proper meal, among other issues associated with the damages and losses. I have had minimal contact with the claims woman who stated that "it is her job to be nice to me until all the facts are in." Wow, I am a litigator and still taken back. That is saying a lot! It is a shame because the staff at Chipman was much more reasonable to deal with -- Stan, Sheryl, and Pat. They are not perfect, but are kind and more customer-oriented than the devil's den that insures them. You are only as good as the people you work with -- way to set the bar really low. The bottom line, shit happens and that is why you are fully insured. That said, they have no interest in honoring a valid claim. Games from day one and absolutely unprofessional to that end. Therefore, I would stay far far far away from them. I will let you know the outcome, but expect to have to fight the matter one way or another -- completely unnecessary. read more

Back in May 2021 I called Chipman Relocations to schedule my move from San Francisco to Boston. My furniture would have to stay in storage until September 2021 when my house would be ready. This company gave me a quote, but then upped it substantially AFTER picking up my belongings. Essentially, they hold your personal treasures hostage so they can demand whatever they want. The packing job was done so poorly. Many items damaged, including artwork and musical instruments. The movers stole some items that "never made it in to any boxes." Then, after receiving my belongings, they charged my card for an additional amount which was unauthorized without my consent. Do yourself a favor and hire another company. read more

We are extremely happy with how everything was handled and taken care of. Scott came over to do a walk through and give me an estimate. He was very helpful and had a lot of information to share with me. Being our first inter state move, I had a lot of questions! Once that was done, we were handed over to Jamie Baleno who was our move coordinator. Jamie was extremely helpful in coordinating the logistics and dates for our move. We confirmed one set of dates but later had to move everything up by a week. She was very professional and very accommodating and got it all done based on our convenience. I would actually choose no stars as they charged us over $9,000. to move across the country and "lost" some of our most valuable items and precious things. Then they had the nerve of denying that things were lost and were unbelievably rude about it. They # each box or item but apparently only use the system to charge you- not to track your things. They said you have 90 days to report missing items then say you signed off at delivery and they are not responsible. They basically said i was lying about not receiving the things the lost- or stolen! I chose them because the agent for them and Mayflower movers was really nice. Worked with United who partnered with Chipman. The men who can to deliver my furniture were great. Delivery was supposed to come July 10th. I reserved a loading dock and took a day off work (first week at a new job) to accommodate this date. I was notified at approximately 4/5p that I would not be getting my stuff that day. And that was only after repeated calls to my United Coordinator. Cannot believe they weren't going to tell me. Stuff came - great. I paid for debris removal and have yet to get in touch with someone to schedule that. Have not even received a call back. My United coordinator apparently cannot reach them either. They will refund the cost - but I paid for the service for a reason. I didn't want to lug 50 boxes downstairs. Had I known I wouldn't get the services I paid for, I would have started taking boxes down 4 days ago. Not happy! read more

I contacted Chipman Relocation & Logistics to get pricing for a move from Pittsburg, CA to Folsom, CA. I was set up for a virtual assessment (similar to FaceTime) to go over the items in my household that would be moving with me. A day or two after the assessment I was contacted by Chipman, Doris and Lew with a quote. The day I preferred to move on was still available so I waited a very short time to get another quote or two and made my choice and went with Chipman. Jennifer Johnson, my move coordinator, contacted me many times during the move process. She was extremely knowledgeable and very responsive to my every question or concern. Larry and crew were the movers I was set up with and they know their stuff. All very professional movers with 20 years experience. I received an email the day before the move with their time of arrival and I also received a phone call from Jennifer letting me know they would be a little later then expected. I really appreciated the heads up. Larry also called me the morning of the move to let me know he was about 30 minutes away. No issues with the move out or the move in and it was one of the hottest days of the year. At the delivery in the middle of the day it was 105 degrees. Larry and crew just kept moving as best as they could given the temperature outside and the fact the move was to a second floor apartment. My bedroom is extremely small in the new place and Larry did the best he could setting it up with a bed, a nightstand and dresser in the room. Unfortunately it was against the wall making the bed extremely hard to make. When Jennifer sent me an email to ask how the move went and make sure I was happy, I explained to her about the position of the bed against the wall and I didn't like it there: she went above and beyond to see if anyone else would be in the area to stop by and reposition the bed for me. Unfortunately dispatch said no one was scheduled to be in the area any time soon. So she contacted Larry and said Larry would be willing to come back and move it for me. One week after the move, Larry and another mover came several hours back to Folsom to relocate the bed and nightstand. I really can't thank Jennifer and Larry and crew enough for making this stress free and comfortable. I was generally unhappy with my moving experience with Chipman. There was a lot of delays involved in the entire process - getting a quote, drafting an estimate, and scheduling the move. I ended up paying more than estimated and I had to frequently call or send reminders to get what I needed (bills, schedules, etc). The window for delivery was extremely tight and given to me on short notice. I was forced to deliver on a certain day and I had to receive the shipment two days later, with no flexibility whatsoever. I was completely at the whim of the moving company and had no influence on the scheduling. read more

I absolutely would not recommend this company. We moved from CA to CT in June and still have unresolved issues. It's infuriating that my sales persons won't call me back. I escalated the issue to the GM and left two voicemails which he didn't return. I finally emailed him with just short of an ultimatum to get back to me within a week. He sent a response which i appreciates but never followed up within that week. Still nothing from him weeks later. The first issue was our couch was lost in the storing process. We called and emailed weekly and our sales person Paulette would not return calls or emails. The couch was allegedly on the way but she refused to give us a date or tracking number. A solid month later I wouldn't let her off the phone and she admitted that it was not on its way but they would have FedEx pick it up tomorrow. Once picked up, which did happen, she still refused to give me tracking info until the day before it arrived. We also have two pieces of broken furniture that were broken in the move. This was addressed on the weekly calls/emails and someone came to inspect the furniture in August. We have heard nothing back since then! I called the company, Final Touch, and they said they had only been authorized to inspect but not repair. Again, no one will get back to me about repairing our furniture and it's been 3.5 months since move in. And of course there are missing pieces. We are missing a large rug and a large framed picture. How does that happen?? We let the driver know about the rug at the time they unloaded. He checked the inventory, two were written down, but four had been delivered and a fifth was missing. Obviously the inventory can't be trusted if we got more than they inventoried. Also, two boxes from someone else's moved were brought in with our stuff! I recognized they were different, we opened them to see, realized it wasn't ours and had the movers take them back. No wonder they lost things of ours also! All of this might make sense as out stuff went to storage prior to being shipped, furniture breaks, I get that the couch was stored in a different area than our container, however customer service is the most important part of doing business! I'm so angry that we still have unresolved issues 3.5 months later and no one follows up, no one has offered a solution or compensation and they really do not seem to care at all! Find a different moving company that will take your calls, and if possible avoid putting your stuff in storage before moving. read more

Recently completed a cross-country move of a 1BR with no definite timeframe on moving into a new home. The process with Chipman was great from beginning to end. I recently moved from the SF Bay Area to Phoenix, AZ, and the folks at Chipman who handled my move were outstanding. We got quotes from other movers, and Chipman came in at a good price and quickly. I was amazed how some other quotes took days to get. The driver I had was Travis, and his crew of Jose and Uncle (yes that's what he went by which I thought was cute because he looks like he could be one of your favorite uncles). These guys were friendly, fast, and very respectful of my stuff. I've had movers throw stuff around before. They asked me where I wanted each piece and box placed and I appreciated that. I recently moved from Seattle to Las Vegas for work. It was slightly bumpy at the beginning with some quotes issues and stuff (which was resolved without much issue) but the ACTUAL moving part was seamless. The reason? Travis. Well, Travis and Uncle. They were friendly, fast, and very respectful of my timeline and my things. Travis was thorough and attentive every step of the way. He even made sure that me and my work partner were moved in before we had to start work, which was a huge concern for us. He was really great and made the move a lot less stressful than it might have been without him. I would highly recommend requesting Travis if you're moving with Chipman relocations. I've used a few Bay Area movers and Chipman Relocations is the best I've found. My wife and I recently left our Cole Valley apt. We have a TON of heavy furniture, and it was not an easy move (stairs, hills, weather, etc). All of our stuff made it out of the apartment FAST and into storage with no real drama! Perhaps most impressive, we could not have chosen a worse day for the move, the weather was miserable (it actually *hailed* in SF). The SFPD botched our parking reservation. And Chipman dealt with all the adversity. Kevin & Sarah did a fantastic job with estimation and coordinating the move behind the scenes. A dear friend on Alameda recommended Chipman Relocations to us for our move from the island. Details were smoothly worked out over email and mobile, and despite only a few days' headsup from us due to many issues, Chipman accommodated our preferred walk-through and move dates. The estimate was quite reasonable, considering how much of a mess our partially-packed mounds presented. The movers were early, organized, polite, and they supremely hustled. We were not nearly as prepared as we wished, but Chipman took it all in stride and made a must-move situation tolerable and enabled us to skirt nervous breakdowns. We would have been dead in the water without them. That they came in several hundred dollars under the estimate and accepted a personal check made us love them even more.
