I do feel kind of bad for her as both times here she was the solo server for the entire restaurant and was running around nonstop. Seems like mostly locals and repeat customers which is fine by me. We came here for the fish and this one of few places that actually charcoal grilled them instead of deep or pan fry. The hamuel pajeon here also top notch. I ordered Lunch Boxes from Chomak and they were SO GOOD. The fact that the boxes are also only $12 is absolutely AMAZING! I've been to other Korean fusion restaurants around Koreatown who only give a little bit of food in their lunch boxes for $18+ (ridiculous). The lunch boxes come with a variety of banchan (side dishes) and a good amount of meat, depending which box you order. Overall they give a ton of food, but it was great since I had leftovers and saved the rest for dinner! They have a bunch of great specials right now along with the regular items they serve! I am feeling stuffed and happy after enjoying lunch at Chomak. Randomly my fiance mentioned eating mackerel after several of our other lunch choices were closed on Sunday :( but in the end, this turned out to be a great thing! I was a bit skeptical at first, although it looks new and modern, they are having an a/c problem and someone was there fixing it when we arrived. They had several fans out and I almost wanted to leave, but we endured and I didn't notice the heat too mcuh. We ordered mackerel of course, and yeolmu naengmyun since it's so hot out. The lady was like--uhh it's spicy! I told her ok, ok it's fine haha To start she brought us small cups of what tasted like soybean milk, the lady suggested we add salt, but I liked the cool and plain taste. Banchan appears small, but everything was so flavorful and a nice variety--eggplant, white kimchi, fried tofu, apple cabbage mayo salad, little shrimp, cucumber kimchi, and maybe something else I cannot recall. The mackerel was delicious! The lady showed us how to mix the onions with the wasabi and soy sauce which really had a great flavor, added a nice fresh crunch the the fish. The fish was also served with egg drop soup and rice. I also really enjoyed the yeolmu naengmyun, it was cool and light, not very spicy at all, had a bit of sweetness to me. Our total meal was $20, so affordable and such delicious food--the service was friendly and welcoming! I will definitely come here again. read more

Chomak is a hole in the wall type restaurant for really good traditional korean food. I was craving yookgaejang so we went here, but found out unfortunately they don't have that. However, they have a whole bunch of other good options and seems to be known for braised or fried fish dishes. So we got the kimchi braised mackerel which was very tasty but a bit on the salty side and a dduk mandoo guk (rice cake with dumpling soup). Be careful eating the mackerel as some parts still have the fish bones in it which sucks if it gets stuck in your teeth or throat. If you don't like spicy, the dduk mandoo gguk is a really good choice. The side dishes are very fresh and good as well. Located in a small plaza next to a Korean Chinese restaurant. read more

This is the epitome of the Korean type of neighborhood bar around the corner that serves of some good food. With COVID going on, I'm glad they were able to reopen with limited dining. I like this place and foods are good. But I don't usually write down reviews even though I feel bad from service. The people who work here speak English not well especially Korean waitress women. I had a hard to time communicate the Korean waitress when she is there. She usually seems avoiding me because I am not Korean. She likes to serve only Korean people. That's why I order the food through online because of the communication. Today, I ordered the food through online. Then my app says " it's ready to pick my food". When I got there. Without looking at my phone, nothing we receive and go go go go and go away. I was trying to explain them then suddenly all people who work there came out yelling at me. So rude. Until then, every night out yelp would be a faithful mediator, a neutral platform where we could compare reviews and come to a quick and efficient consensus on what would be our next exciting foodie adventure. Without it, we became like two confused dogs running around ktown looking for our tails. At 9pm on a tuesday night, we stumbled upon Cho Mak, a 'new' place that had just replaced Wando. We were greeted by a thunderous voice who was probably the manager or the owner, which actually made us feel excited and thought 'hey maybe we don't need yelp!'. But we spoke a little too soon.... As soon as we stepped in we were confused. Is this a bar? or a restaurant? The lighting was dark, the ambience was romantic, and the music was amorous...but they served cheap grilled fish. Maybe an ideal place for a stingy first date? You can literally palpate the confusion of the owners trying to design this place, maybe they tried to have their cake and eat it too, by making it a bar and a restaurant to cater to both types of customers. They failed. Starting from the reheated food (kimchi stew), to the their cheap decor($20 tables bought from the local korean furniture store down the street), to the disdainful waitresses that blatantly ignore the manager's constant calls to provide better service, this restaurant or bar does not work in so many ways. Added to the fact that out of the four tables seated two belonged to the staff, and there was an unmistakable aroma of weed coming from that direction at the end of the night (not that we're prude by any chance), we concluded that this is a place we'll try again....when the next restaurant takes over. A pretty good spot for lunch and dinner has opened up on the north end of K-Town on Western Ave., just south of 3rd St., but keep in mind that they more than just fish. Unfortunately, the parking lot is small, but I am always able to find parking on Western Ave. The space is very clean and open, so you will not smell like fish or anything after you leave. They have a modern theme going on, which I dig! I've been here a few times already and have tried almost all of their broiled fish dinner plates! It's a large portion and very good! The 3 different mackerel plates are actually my favorite, even though mackerel can be kind of fishy, but they do it up properly here. They have lunch combos that include 2 items that change every weekday that I want to try, but I have always gotten the broiled fish plates. They offer all the Korean staple foods, like bulgogi, kimchi & soybean paste stews, spicy beef stews (yook-geh-jang), a few varieties of bibmbap, porridge, and also a few pork dishes, like spicy pork and steamed pork belly that is served with steamed Napa cabbage. Also they give you plenty of sides, aka banchan. They are all really good! They also have a spicy crispy chicken dish that isn't on the menu. It's $20-something bucks, but if you come with friends, totally get it to share...morsels of crispy chicken coated with a sweet & spicy sauce on a bed of smaller-than-shoestring fries! The restaurant is clean and airy do you don't' smell like grill or fish. Their side dishes are also really good and they have a variety of other none fish items too, like stews and stir fry dishes. So even if you're not feeling like fish, the other dishes still good and there are options. We ordered a grill mackerel and a beef sort of soup/stew (sorry don't remember the name... but it was slightly spicy and meaty). Both we very good. Chomak is great! They have an extensive menu of Korean dishes and stews. There are a lot of fish dishes that you don't find at normal Koreatown restaurants. You can dine alone or order larger dishes that are perfect to share with multiple friends. Plus they serve Korean alcohol and beers that go well with the type of food they have. I personally really like the stir-fried dishes, such as the spicy stir-fried squid or the spicy stir-fried pork and kimchi. AND YOU HAVE TO GET THE SOY MARINATED RAW SHRIMP. Also the banchan (complimentary small Korean side dishes) are always fresh and tasty. They're always adding new dishes to the menu too, so more to try. It was already my third visit yesterday. I tried spicy seafood stone, mackerel kimchi, small intestine soup and egg with vegetables roll so far. I have been just amazed with their dishes. They were all fantastic! There was a different fish grill restaurant called Wando at this place previously . Thank God it was replaced by Chomack. Chomack is so much better than Wando. The food is great and the price is very reasonable. The waitress working there is very nice and sweet. She always smiles. They have great side dishes that are different every time I go. You could try anything on the menu, it's hard to go wrong here. I've tried the grilled fish, the marinated broiled fish, and the soups. Just moved to LA/Korea town from the San Francisco Bay Area and this was going to be my first meal. I just so happen to randomly walk up to this place around 10pm on a Friday night and the place was empty... I asked if they were open and I received a friendly welcome. I knew I wanted some spicy tofu soup and after making sure I wasn't getting fried tofu (I hate fried tofu) they came through with the awesomeness! The tofu was so light and silky and the seafood was done just right. I got the medium spicy soup and it was magical! I may step it up a bit next time. I would totally recommend this resto. i really, really, really like this place. they have a fairly extensive menu but fish is their specialty. can't go wrong with anything fish. however, some of the non- fish items are just as good (ie, gamjatang). their banchan seems to change everytime I go, but can't complain because it's always good. especially love the small bokchoy-like kimchee. just look at how packed it gets by Koreans, how long the wait can get, and the amount of memorabilia from Korean celebrities who've been here that hang on the walls and you know you've come to a really good place. there is really just want one big downside here but since it's more of a personal preference than anything they're doing, I can't knock off a star. but as a notice to non-Koreans, or even westernized Koreans (like myself): they have something on the menu called chunggookjang, which is kind of like a very strong version of korean miso, that old school Koreans love. however, there is a very strong smell that can be repugnant to those who are not used to it. and apparently this place makes it well, so it may stink inside from ppl ordering it. that's the only downside. i hate sitting by a table that orders it because i can't stand the smell. but then the food I do order comes out, and I care less about that smell read more

Chicken gizzard - Also very good! I liked their tabasco hot sauce that had a twist. Fried chicken with onions and jalapenos (I forgot the name maybe it was Spring Onion Chicken?; first on the list of appetizers) - surprisingly good! I didn't know what to expect when I ordered this. I thought it'd be fried chicken legs with a green onion twist but they were actually strips of chicken breast that were breaded and fried served with raw onions, raw jalapeno peppers, and sweet soy sauce based sauce. It was a good dish to munch on while drinking and chatting. Spicy beef braised short ribs - this was mediocre. The sauce lacked the spicy kick and it also wasn't salty enough but the meat was very tenderly cooked and melted in my mouth. Pollack soup - I had no problems with this. They serve it with a portable gas burner so that we can continuously eat it hot. The soup didn't taste and smell too fishy and the pollack was soft and tasty too. read more

This is where I get my soul food. Braised cod with kimchee and radishes. That is where it's at. The fish dishes are all really excellent. I also love their fried fish, too. Their beef dishes are fine. Not the best ever, but pretty good if you're just not in the mood for fish. They play old-timey Korean pop music that helps give that homey feeling. Chomak has been on my list to try for awhile now and last Saturday presented the perfect opportunity. I wanted a place that wasn't too crowded, no long lines and a nice environment to just partake in a good meal with some friends. The interior was nice and clean and the tables are nicely spaced out so you don't feel like you're eavesdropping on your neighbors convo. There was only one waitress when we went for lunch on Saturday but she was super friendly even though she had to take care of all the tables. Mackerel - their grilled Atka Mackerel is what you want to order. it was grilled to perfection and it was so good, we ordered another for "dessert". I'm not kidding. Spicy Kalbi Jjim - a giant dish that had about 9-10 pieces of kalbi jjim albeit a spicy version unlike the traditional. very very flavorful and it was perfectly seasoned. Mung Bean Pancake - crispy perfection, comes in a serving of 3. Gyeran Mari - i don't see this on too many menus so it was a must and it didn't disappoint. the eggs were rolled and seasoned nicely with chopped green onions inside. a squeeze of ketchup on top rounded it out. Gochujang Jjigae - we just wanted an order of soup to go along with the dishes and ordered this one. spicy enough without it being too overpowering and really well rounded flavor. i could have eaten this with rice and be happy. All in all a really nice experience and I will definitely go back. The only downside to this place is the tiny parking lot and lack of valet as well as the lack of a/c. read more

We actually came to the area on a Sunday night intending to go to Jun Won only to find them closed. Fortunately Chomak was right across the street and we were not The flavors of the ban chan the kimchi were very good. We ordered the Pah Jun ( green onion pancake), Gook Bahp ( spicy soup), doo boo kimchi (tofu and sautéed kimchi and pork), and their specialty Kal gook soo ( forgot the actual name of it on the menu). All four dishes were delicious. The pah jun was loaded with squid and so was more of a seafood pah jun. We ordered the gook bahp extra spicy and the broth had a lot of depth as well as a great spicy kick. The doo boo kimchi was well flavored and our boys loved it. The star of the show was the kal gook soo. Wish I remembered the name..... tried looking at the menu photos but none of them are current. The kal gook soo was more like a seaweed soup broth (Me yuk gook) with hand cut noodles. I've never had this version of kal gook soo before....the broth was light and refreshing and while the noodles weren't as good as Olympic Noodle, the broth made up for any shortcomings. read more

I came here for the gajami gui (lightly fried sole fish.) I used to eat it all the time growing up, really enjoyed the crispiness of the fins, the unique taste of the skin, and even the fish. I guess I took it as granted that my grandmother and mother were such good cooks.
