I think I've been coming here for a very, very long time--probably for about 20 years! I used to come here quite often back then. At some point, though, I stopped coming as much because the parking situation in this shopping center became so busy and chaotic that it was difficult to even get in from the entrance. Also, the last time I came here, maybe two years ago, the valet parking attendant was so rude that I didn't really feel like coming back. This time, since we were already in the area for the spa, we decided to stop by again. Back when I first started coming here, it was just a very small noodle restaurant. One thing they've kept all these years--and what I think is such a great touch--is that they still serve yeolmu kimchi and kkom-bori-bap (barley rice) as a complimentary side. The restaurant became incredibly popular over the years and eventually expanded into the neighboring space, so there are now many more tables than there used to be. Since it had been such a long time since my last visit, I noticed they had quite a few new menu items that weren't available before, including galbi-jjim (braised short ribs), samgyetang (Korean ginseng chicken soup), and galbi noodle soup. One of my brothers and I ordered the perilla oil makguksu each, and it was absolutely delicious! It had such a rich, nutty flavor from the perilla oil, and it was one of those dishes that makes you think about it again later. In the past, I would always order the clam kalguksu whenever I came here, but this time I decided to try something different. My other brother ordered the clam kalguksu, and my mom had the dolsot (Hot stone) bibimbap. I tried a spoonful of my mom's dolsot bibimbap because I really like bibimbap too, and it was delicious as well. In the past, the wait here used to be incredibly long. You had to write your name and phone number by hand at the entrance, and then a staff member would come outside and call your name when your table was ready. This time, the system was different. We were told to simply wait in line, and she would take our orders outside. She said the wait would only be about 5-10 minutes, and she was absolutely right. While we were waiting in line outside, she handed us menus, took our orders, and then seated us at our table. The food came out quickly, the service was very friendly, and everything we ordered was delicious. It turned out to be a very satisfying dinner. After coming back here again after such a long time, I completely understood why this place has been so popular for so many years. It was just as popular back then as it is now, and honestly, I can see why!

On top of that, the interior is clean, cute, and very well-kept. Parking is quite limited, though--even with valet service, it gets super congested. There's almost always a long line, as it seems like a must-try spot for anyone visiting LA. Because of that, getting a table is usually pretty tough, but we got so lucky last Sunday and were seated right away. The food was absolutely divine, and we left completely satisfied. Honestly, I almost wish fewer people knew about this place so I could come more often. They're just that good.

Bathrooms were nice and clean. We got seated outside but it was humid so it was quite warm at 530 pm. I wish they had some portable fans or air conditioning to make the experience more comfortable. Regardless, we Uber'd here so we stayed. We ordered combo B - Grilled Galbi beef, crack corn, salad, blooming onion and Cass beer. The combo comes with Soju or beer! When I tell you that the beef was delicious, I mean it! Tender with great flavor! The crack corn is truly like crack! I couldn't get enough! The salad with sesame dressing was so refreshing with the food. The blooming onion was also very crispy! I'm glad we decided to stay and eat because the food was truly delicious! It was worth sitting outside with no air.

I'm so sorry in my drunk state I ended up spilling my broth all over the table and floor. The staff were so sweet and understanding, I kept apologizing to them.

Only downside is that after mixing in the beef marrow with the tartare, it became congealed fat so not a great texture. But flavor was great. For the main we got the zabuton to share and opted for the 16oz. We probably should've gotten the 8oz cause this was a lot of food for the two of us. But it was so tender and I loved pairing it with the perilla side. The garlic rice was delicious too. I can definitely see the hype and would come back for the steak. So tender.

The rest of the set was better, fortunately, but most of it was on par with banchan that is complimentary at other restaurants but of course more variety. The savory pancake was very crispy and stayed that way. That was probably my favorite from the set, along with the perilla seed and chicken soup. The texture was quite thick like gravy but I love congee and it had a similar feel but nuttier taste. I would love a bowl of this if I were sick. Since there were 3 of us, we thought a protein would be good so we ordered the pork ribs. They were pretty good. It reminded me of hamji park, although I prefer hamji. It ended up being more food than we could eat so we took some of the ribs home. I'm glad we ordered the set for 2 and then shared a different dish. Overall I'm glad I tried it since I've been curious. The meal was good but I probably would try another option next time.

If you're searching for some of the city's best pork, then those in the know will bring up Ham Ji Park. For 2 decades, generous platters of pork ribs and pork neck stew decked every table. Now, our Korean friends lament the loss of their favorite pork joint in the city. The Koreatown proper location is located in the Royal Plaza mini-mall, just a few blocks off bustling Wilshire. Discounted parking is available in a lot across the street from the Chevron gas station. From the street, the entrance is flanked by potted plants and an enclosed street-ery. Inside, stainless steel chairs are pressed up against wooden tables, each outfitted with a metal grill. Oppressive fluorescent lighting shines down on the stone grey walls, which are left undecorated apart from a few flatscreens. Multi-lingual chatter blends with the sizzle of platters. I visited with some friends for a weeknight dinner, and about half of the tables were occupied. We shared a spread of grilled platters and sizzling soups. The meal began with a carafe of barley tea and a mostly standard spread of banchan. Across our food, the best dish was the signature Charbroiled Pork Spare Rib. The ribs were flavorful without feeling gamey, and the meat was complemented by sweet caramelized onions. The pork ribs handily outdid the good-not-great Charbroiled Beef Short Rib. Lastly, the Milt and Cod Rose with Vegetables stew was fishy and briny, appropriately flavored for the Korean palate. The service was appropriately attentive, although I would've appreciated more intentional refills of our banchan ramikens. The rib plates cost upward of $35 each, while the soup was just under $30. The portions were hearty; a single entree platter could reasonably feed 2 moderately hungry bellies. It's a shame to hear that Ham Ji Park has closed; I'm kicking myself for not trying their pork neck stew earlier.

Wow, amazing restaurant. We ordered steamed cod to go. When we opened the box, there were literally two pieces of cods. I wonder why they use a gigantic to-go box if they were to put only two pieces. They should have named that a steamed bean sprout instead of steamed cod. To make things worse, when I called them and asked about what happened, their stone cold answer was this. "We always weigh the cod before we cook, so there should not be any problems." Well, if your way to measure was so correct, why did I feel the amount of cod looked so little on the to go box comparing the orders I made on your hall to dine in. So disappointed and please, other complimentary menu would not do anything since I already paid over 42 dollars plus tips(Jesus, I should not have tipped you if I knew you were so rude on the phone). My goodness, I just had the most fantastic dining experience at Joo Mak! From the moment I walked in, the cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made me feel right at home. And let me tell you, the food was simply amazing! I couldn't get enough of those perfectly cooked skewers, the tender squid, and that stew was out of this world! But it wasn't just the food that made my night so special - the service was truly top-notch. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and were having a great time. WOW!!! The best grilled mackerel anywhere. Recommended by friend to try this place out and turned out to be a jewel in K-Town. Mackerel was seasoned and grilled perfectly to my taste buds. Also had fish stew and it was delicious as well. Had variety of side dishes with refills and great service from waitress, I'll make it a weekely visit for dinner. read more

Korean-style broiled fish - I actually found out about this restaurant while browsing Rushorder app to get some delivery. (try using HUNGRY3 promo code). Anyway, the food was amazing. The fish was moist and flaky, the side dishes were delicious as well. I think i will be ordering more from this restaurant in the future. read more

as authentic as it gets for korean food...you know it's a good place when there's a bunch of older korean men drinking soju. tried the mackerel, pork belly, budajigae and daenjang jigae...all were perfect. this is the go to for my family in k-town as it has fish for the kids and wife and pork belly and soju for me. read more

At first, when they were cooking up the meal, I was like this looks easy to make. Just get some chicken, mushrooms, tteok and potatoes, slather it in gochujang and you got this. But then they later added cabbage, then waited a while to add perilla leaves and green onions, then waited a while longer to add on the cheese. Also while seeing how much the dish had to be stirred, it clearly became evident that this dish takes a lot of precision and timing, and arm movements as well much like a risotto. It was really good but I think what made it truly stand out were the perilla leaves. If there could've been more of them, that would've been amazing. After finishing off the meal, they added kimchi friend rice to it as well, which included kimchi, sesame oil and a lot of seaweed flakes. I think it went well with the meal but also kind of put me in a food coma. The service is great. They're very attentive with cooking the dish right and also refilling the barley tea. The ambiance is cozy and kind of oldschool. Jonathan Gold wrote about it in the LA times a long time ago too. Great place to check out.

The fried loach is especially unique--crispy, flavorful, and something you can only experience at this restaurant. It's one of my favorite dishes here. The kimchi and tofu that come with the meal are also outstanding. The tofu is especially addictive because it's perfectly crispy on the outside and incredibly delicious. Even the seasoned bean sprouts are amazing. I love how all of the side dishes are always fresh, clean, beautifully prepared, and consistently delicious. I actually used to dislike Chueotang and could never eat it, but this restaurant completely changed my mind. Their Chueotang is so good that I started enjoying it after trying it here. Another reason I love this place is the excellent customer service. The staff are always incredibly thoughtful and attentive. Before you even have to ask, they come by to refill the side dishes, bring extra napkins, or check if you need more water. Their hospitality is truly exceptional. Yesterday, my mom, my brother, and I all ordered the Chueotang with abalone. During the hot summer, abalone is considered a nourishing food that helps restore your energy, and I honestly felt refreshed and energized after eating it. We can tell that they put a lot of passion, love and effort into the dishes. The owners are always so friendly and nice and make us feels like we are eating the food at home, feels homey. Whenever I feel a bit under the weather or low energy I feel much better afterward. So, I can't say or exclaim enough of this place and they well deserved more business. They even liked the traditional style kimchi stew, which was tasty and made with sour kimchi, the way it should be. The food was not that "wow" but the prices were low ($13.99 for a combo of bulgogi with kimchi stew and barley rice) and wondered if their business can stick around long enough with just their 5 small tables? But luckily found out that their main business is making kimchi (their green onion kimchi was very good) and the restaurant was more of an after thought. The menus were only in korean and I doubt if anyone spoke English there, but google translating the menu worked. (See photo) What I liked most about this place was that I felt like I was in a small restaurant of a small korean village, with the friendly ajummas walking in and out of the restaurant (the kimchi making station is just outside on the patio) wearing their brightly colored rubber aprons and rubber shoes.

I checked Yelp and seeing the old school interior told me this place would probably be good because they've managed to survive all these years. The nice lady mentioned that their chicken knife cut noodles are their most popular so I went with that. I've never had this dish before but this place made me a fan. It's almost like a richer, heartier and way better version of American chicken noodle soup, but it should honestly not even be a comparison because this is on another level for sure. The Kimchi here is also REALLY good. With all the ladies running around in the kitchen area it's pretty easy to see why the food here is good. And did I mention the portions are MASSIVE too. It was surprisingly expensive. Some customers who were about to order in front of us saw the price and decided not to order--they just left and went somewhere else. When I ordered the abalone porridge, I asked why it was $27 when the menu board showed $22. The lady who took the order sighed deeply and said that everything has become so expensive these days. She also mentioned that they need to update the menu prices, but they don't have the money or time to change the menu board. Even though the porridge was very expensive, we still ordered it, and my mom enjoyed it very much. This porridge restaurant is a place I've loved for a very long time, even since it was located at a different location. It is still delicious.

So if you're a first timer like me, it is located in the food court. But that aside, I think this is one of a great comfort food, especially when you're traveling, or a busy day and would like to have something that helps wind down your day. Their food and ingredients are fresh and they have a variety of selections. I ordered the chicken porridge with oriental ingredients and abalone porridge, and they're really good. They are a little pricey but I guess the quality and the ingredients that they include in the porridge justifies the price.
