We have always loved Chuck A Rama and have visited several locations for over 27 years. Since we don't live close to any, our visits are not as frequent as we might like, but they never disappoint us. There is always a wonderful variety, the employees keep their restaurants very clean, despite an ever growing number if customers, and wait staff are as attentive as we need them to be.They work so hard and are very nice people. I personally love the variety of salads (including sugar free varieties), a choice of fish and those wonderful scones. read more

My wife and I go 3-4 times a week. 5 generations of my family have gone to "Chucks" for all special occasions. We will no longer frequent this restaurant. Very sad day indeed. read more

I'm not a Utah native, and where I'm from chain buffets include the frightening Old Country Buffet. But I was really hungry after a run, the wife was out of town, so I thought I might as well try a $12 buffet instead of $12 worth of KFC. Chuck-A-Rama is a buffet, and you shouldn't expect much more. But it's a better buffet, at least compared to what I grew up with. It's light, bright, with high ceilings, particularly in the circular room that houses the buffet lines. And the staff is friendly. There's no hint of death and despair that you often find in lesser, darker, more senior-focused places. In general, the food isn't bad overall. Things get refereshed regularly (on a Sunday late afternoon when I was there), things were hot, fresh, and well presented. The good: - Pastries. Big, fresh rolls (if not baked on site, clearly recently baked) Utah "scones" (something like Native American fry bread, but made by descendants of Brigham Young. It's soft and awesome inside, with a little crispy crust), cinnamon pull-aparts, beautiful cakes. - Beverages. They're included, of course, but there has to be at least a dozen soda flavors (Pepsi and Dr. Pepper products, SoBe, Apple Beer), three kinds of tea, slushees, horchada, and filtered water. Something for everyone. - Baked chicken. It was moist with a nice, seasoned skin. - "Funeral potatoes" (like sour cream hash brown casserole with potato chips on top) - Desserts. Like other buffet places, you get soft serve with toppings, but also some really nice cakes and fruit toppings. The less good: - Veggies. Hot veggies are just peas, corn, and green beans, from a bag or can, with no seasoning, or other veggies smothered in fake cheese sauce. Also few cold vegetable options on the salad bar. Really, the salad bar at Sizzler is much higher quality. - No fish at all. Maybe they were just out, but I was surprised that Sunday dinner didn't have either shrimp, fried whitefish, or salmon. - Most of the meat. The carved roast beef was stringy and flavorless. The "turkey and dressing" was more like yesterday's turkey smashed up with bread and a little bit of premade gravy. Fried chicken was underseasoned. - The "kid food." Lots of stuff for kids, like frozen pizza, premade fries, mac and cheese from a can, etc., that I suppose picky kids will want to eat, but just take up space on the line for me. It does honor the Utah food traditions -- the aforementioned funeral potatoes, lots of jello salads (they even have a Bill Cosby-signed box of Jello on display), pudding, casseroles, and other middle american fare. And they do a pretty decent job of it. I wouldn't go with a vegetarian (I really couldn't find any entree that a vegetarian could eat -- even the spaghetti and sauce appeared to have meat in it), and don't go expecting some miraculous cuisine. As (non-Vegas) buffets go, it's considerably better than other chains (particularly for the atmosphere). Though if I want protein and a nice salad bar, I'll either go to one of the Brazilian steakhouses, or, on the cheap, head to Sizzler. read more

Ugh... I don't know why I do this to myself. Oh, wait, yeah I do. Because like any good pregnant young lady, I am hungry CONSTANTLY. I allowed myself to get so famished this evening that I let Manfriend talk me into Chuckarama. And the weird part was, in my starving stooper, he actually convinced ME that it was my idea... he's good at trickery like that. Now not that I was against the idea... come on, its a buffet. But I highly doubt it would have been my first choice. Upon entrance, I had high hopes for this place. I really did. It was clean inside, and the employees were rather friendly. However, and this is just a personal preference mind you, I could have done without the 15,000 children that were running around all crazy inside. Something I probably need to get used to, right? Ummm.. no. Not in that amount. And not with that level of ADHD. After paying, we managed to find an area of the restaurant to park that wasn't completely infested with children... and the ones that were seated there were pretty well behaved. Score. As usual, I went for the salad bar first. Pretty good selection... I've seen better, but still ok. Not Vegas buffet style, but I wasn't really expecting that. It was all pretty fresh too. Good start. I also snagged a softball-sized wheat dinner roll which was fresh and rather good as well. After my salad, nothing else really impressed me. Everything I tasted, which ranged from roast beef, to fried chicken, to cajun broiled fish... was all rather flavorless and boring. The fried chicken was pretty dry to me. The clam chowder lacked flavor as well... womp womp. I didn't try the fried fish, probably because the fried shrimp weren't very impressive. I don't really know what else to say about Chuckie. I suppose I shouldn't have expected much from a buffet that charges like 12 bucks per person. Including drink. Speaking of drinks, my iced tea was super weird looking... very cloudy and oddly colored. I don't know... the whole experience was just a blah deal. You know how that is... not complain to the management-bad, just not impressive or memorable in any way. On to the next... Im sure the next 6 months will be full of face-cramming excursions. :) Oh, a little funny note... as I was exiting, I noticed a sign on the wall that stated that no food shall be taken from the premises... and that shoplifting is a punishable offense. I love buffets. All you can eat? A very enticing idea at first blush. But there are consequences to every choice. As a result, I also hate buffets. Buffets are sort of the "siren's song" of the food world. They woo you to the table with promises of sumptuous excess, and wanton and unlimited gustatory pleasure. But in the end, your body and soul are disseminated, and you always leave feeling a lot more shameful, and a little less civilized. Buffets range in impressiveness and quality. There are the mind-blowing, over the top, gluttonous orgies like you would find at one of the big hotel/casinos in Vegas, or even up the canyon at Snowbird. There are the seemingly ubiquitous, guilty oriental pleasures with disturbing names such as Jumbo Buffet, Crazy Buffet, and Buffet City. And then there are those buffets that cater to those who crave old- fashioned comfort food, like Hometown Buffet and everyone's favorite Utah original, Chuck-A-Rama. Chuck-A-Rama is what it is and does what it does. And truth be told, the food is rarely objectionable, and mostly satisfactory. The problem is that while I generally enjoy the meal while I am consuming it, I just can't seem to regulate myself at Chuck-A-Rama, or any other buffet for that matter. Something just goes awry. Maybe it's the mediocre quality. Maybe it's the odd mixtures of food consumed (You know what I mean. A taco, some lasagna, mashed potatoes, an egg roll, and banana pudding, all on the same plate). This is mormon food at its finest. My wife secretly loves this place and convinced me to try it finally after living in Utah for several years already. I'm not sure why everyone talks crap about this buffet because it's really pretty good. They have fresh tasting food and really good fresh baked rolls and cookies. The salad bar is well-stocked. When my oldest started Kindergarten this fall we did the typical proud parent things, one of which included taking her out to the restaurant of her choice. She picked Chuck-a-rama so we put on our stretchy pants, piled into the minivan, and got our Chuck on. The Chuck has definitely got their carbs figured out. The breads, scones (Utah variety) and rolls are all really good. Beyond the breads, Nothing else is great, but not terrible either. They do theme nights (Asian night, Italian night) but if you called you could know when those are to skip those. I have also heard stories of the Utah football teaming hitting this location weekly and using trays instead of plates. I'd rather not be behind those guys. As my little girl ate her celebratory plate she stopped and looked at me and said "You know...there's really nothing wrong with this place." I hit this place up cause I was in the mood for basic American. I had been to another location in SLC, so I knew what to expect. Ugh, why did I even attempt this? So it happened to be "A Taste of Mexico" night where they served burritos, tacos, and enchiladas as well as other "Mexican" items. It should be renamed "A Shittastic Taste of Texico" cause they food was just awful! They had taco salad, burritos, tacos and enchiladas with several meats. All of it was very unauthentic and more in line with American style. It was super busy, almost no places to sit. Children everywhere, screaming! This was on a Thursday evening. I got a booth and started to get food. I picked out a few things like the pork burritos, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy. Tried the taco salad. The only redeeming thing was that the salad was romaine lettuce and not ice burg. Everything else tasted like it was prepackaged and microwaved to be ready to service. The meats from their cuts they do in house appeared to be the meats that you but in the grocery deli and have sliced for sandwiches. I couldn't even finish the mac and cheese, which was macaroni with the nacho cheese sauce used for chips, and the mashed potatoes and gravy was just awful. The deserts were slim and equally as awful. I don't think anything there is real. The staff were friendly, but so overwhelmed that you only saw them when they had to pick up your dishes. Would not recommend, avoid this place. It is a "family tradition" of ours to go to Chuck-A-Rama when we go to Salt Lake City at least once when visiting my Grandma's side of the family. They really expanded on their salad section quite a bit over the years. It must have been over seven years since I last went (that's how long the family hasn't got together out in the promised land). The fried chicken was pretty bomb as I remembered last. We went for lunch so I was sorely missing out the classic American food... ham, roast beef, whatever they usually serve. I'd hold out for dinner for the meat. It's a lot better than say Souplantation I have to say (very fresh, high turnover, always crowded), definitely better than Fresh Choice in the Bay Area, and worlds better than any Hometown Buffet I been to. First, ignore the name of the establishment; it is a bad representation of the tasteful, quality product! Second, I am not a fan of most buffets because most seem rather cheap. The service is usually crap, and the food tends to be the same. However, there are a few buffets that I would recommend, and this is one of them! The atmosphere is friendly and energetic, decor tasteful with high ceilings, lots of glass and marble, and clean quality workmanship. Food has a vast variety you would expect with a buffet, but this one has a LOT to offer! Shrimp is added certain days/times of the week too. Yes the once unthinkable has indeed happened. Although you do have to admit the name of this place is a bit scary. I can't help but think that "Chuck" is a euphemism of some sort. After many years of living in Utah I finally broke down and ate here. To my pleasant surprise it is not nearly as bad as my expectations. This restaurant is located on the Fashion Place shopping mall grounds. We went a little later and there was no queue to get in. Usually you have to stand in line to get in I'm told. You prepay for your meal, which is a little odd. The restaurant was full of families, many with young kids. There is definitely a shuffle you have to perform to get from your table to the buffet area and back again. The food was was definitely eatable but nothing approaching the gourmet end of the spectrum. They have a carving station where someone will slice you off a portion of roast beef, turkey, or prime rib. The salad bar was full of fresh items. The salad bar alone is better than the entirety of Sweet Tomatoes. There are meats and other sugary side dishes to choose from. There was a lack of healthy side dishes to choose from, but plenty of bread options. The soups did not look very good. For desert there was a wide variety of pies, brownies, custards, and other assorted treats. Overall it was a pleasant experience. It can get quite crowded during the dinner service so plan accordingly. The only thing your waiter does is clear you used plates. Not too bad at all. Good for families. read more

Pretty excellent buffet all-around: relatively cheap, tons of drink options, service is friendly and quick, and best of all the food is actually good. Some of the items that keep me coming back are: fresh baked dinner rolls, fry bread, biscuits & gravy, cinnamon buns and their chicken enchiladas. These items IMO rival or surpass those found at many full service restaurants. The dessert table is also massive, with an eye-popping (and button-busting) array of rich, moist cakes and creamy soft serve with a dazzling line-up of warm cookies and sweet toppings to trick out your dessert plate. Kids under a certain age eat free. Servers bring drinks to you but they're also self-serve if you desire. Lunch is around $10. read more

While visiting from Las Vegas we tried this buffet. Now I know Vegas is the buffet Mecca however I feel like I am being fair. This place was very clean and the staff was nice. The buffet area is a little tight to move around in but we managed. The selection is okay but, besides the salad bar there aren't really any vegetables or many healthy choices. I do believe in fried foods as I am southern but I do respect the need for ruffage. I would have liked to see more greens, and other veggies on the counters. There were a lot of starchy items and meat but it was good. I would like to recommend that they review the food pyramid again. Maybe I will get to visit again one day read more

I know that for 12/13 bucks one can hardly demand filet mignon but a beef-hungry travelor wary from the journey needs more than the aforementioned roast and an indelibly salty oats turkey breast. Bottom line, this place is a Golden Corral clone with far fewer options in the way of food but a surprisingly nice beverage section with an overwhelming choice of libations.
