10/10 again! We love having our birthday celebrations at Chungdam. We tried new dishes this time and they were all hits. We got Set B. The wagyu Galbi is not now part of the set B in lieu of the Chungdam galbi. The Chungdam Galbi had always been our favorite, but honestly even though we did not order it this time around, everything was still spectacular. The Galbi jjim, ribeye and banchan are all so tender and flavorful. Our family loved the seafood pancake, spicy raw marinated crab that's included with banchan, & seabass. We also had the yuzu cheesecake which was perfectly balanced and not too sweet. John the manager always provides an incredible experience. Ted has always been our favorite server! He's very attentive and you can tell he takes great care of all of his customers. We love to also bring friends that come from out of town to Chungdam and they are always blown away by the food since the quality & flavors are at a such a high level. Honestly I wanna gatekeep this place, but I have to give them 5 stars because of the food, service and ambiance. Came out for a celebration on a Saturday night - LOVED it! Everything was a hit. I especially liked the ribeye steak and marinated short rib! The spicy pork belly & squid was good too (loved that they put rice cakes in it to absorb all the sauce)! Also, they had spicy raw crab as part of their ban chan (not sure if seasonal though) which was impressive! It was SO flavourful and definitely comparable to other krn places that serves it as a main. Ambiance was nice - nice decor and I appreciated that it was much quieter than most KBBQ spot. Service was also really good 10/10. They grilled the meat for you (to perfection actually- just make sure you eat when they tell you to). Amazing service at Chungdam. I've been here a few times before, so I booked this for a joint birthday dinner with my sister-in-law. They seated our large party (11 people) in one of their private rooms. We ordered a bunch of plates and different BBQ meats for our table, which included seafood pancake, steamed egg, grilled squid, galbijjim, bibimbap, galbitang, and beef tofu soup. We got about ~7 plates of meat (bulgogi, pork belly, beef tongue, and brisket), which was a perfect amount for us. I love that they cooked on the grill on the other table in the private room, so that we wouldn't have the smell of KBBQ on our clothes. They also brought out lots of banchan for us - I was surprised that that included raw marinated crab. Although, I wish they had some of the staple side dishes like fish cakes, radish kimchi, etc. Everything was cooked very well, full of flavor and spices, meat was super tender. Our server was very sweet and accommodating; she definitely made sure we were taken care of. Lastly, we were celebrating two birthdays, so she brought out a little surprise (chocopies for the table) and sang happy birthday for us. Overall, great place for celebrations and group dinners. Very Disappointed Not Coming Back Chung Dam used to be our favorite spot. My family came here often, but this visit completely ruined my birthday. We paid $317 including 18% tips for Signature Set B for 3 people, and it was not worth it. The meat quality has gone downhill too fatty, barely any real meat, and no bone like before. They didn't help with grilling well, and service was terrible. We waited forever for tea, had to ask 3 times, and they forgot our soup. It came like 30 minutes later, salty and full of fat. The restaurant wasn't even busy, but the servers were more focused on chatting with friends than helping customers. What's worse? We went to down street Seorai Korean BBQ (same owner), last week and it was much better ‍great service, better food, and fair pricing. Clearly, Chung Dam is poorly managed now. The restaurant has a posh look, but I feel like their quality of meat and banchan should be higher to match the prices + ambiance. By the time we were almost done with our food, we were given the bibimbap - found a ceramic chipped piece in a soondooboo (manager/worker confirmed it was not an eggshell and looked like part of a dish). High concern from worker for safety, but no compensation (nor were we asking for any) ---- Food Galbi jjim: very soft, love the flavor! Love the fresh green onion and the pumpkin Shrimp appetizer: juicy pieces of shrimp, flavor was great, texture was on point. Would order again! Nengmyun: honestly one of the better ones I've had, but the meat tasted like a fish tank. I was told this is normal in nengmyun though. ---- It was SO loud in the restaurant. My personal favorite was the fresh wasabi. The meat was the best part but it was also quite pricy. For the sides and appetizers, I thought it was pretty average. Even though the restaurant was close to closing, Ted still welcomed us with such warmth, sat us down, and genuinely seemed happy to serve us. We're vegetarian, and he went above and beyond to take extra care of us--double-checking every item and making sure everything was prepared correctly. The chef even came out personally to confirm our order and ensure we chose the right dishes, which meant so much to us. This level of hospitality is rare. I have few business partners visiting Bay Area and i called Chungdam for a reservation. The guy on the line said they don't do reservation for dinner first come first serve. I specifically asked do I need to wait if I come over now? He said no waiting line at the moment. I didn't think much, drove there together. We arrived around 5:45 ish and restaurant basically still empty, only two or three tables. We have 5 in total all arrived. But the young Korean guy in reception (I recognized his voice he was the one answered my call) told us there's no table(excuse me???) said all remaining tables are reserved????? WTF????? I told him we can wait if they need time to prepare the table (although restaurant basically empty at that time) but he said can't guarantee the wait time. WTF???????? We ended up eating in a nearby KBBQ and had a nice dinner there. My guests were happy they didn't complain about Chungdam but I can't take this shit. For the dipping sauces, I'd go salt/3rd, wasabi, miso, and oily salt/4th. The sides are all consistent. I don't think any of them are weak but jalapeno and kimchi are my favorite. Solid KBBQ spot in the Bay with good service and a variety of different Korean dishes to fit anyone's palate. It's a bit pricey, but it's all similar in pricing for other KBBQ spots in the area. Chungdam is known for its classy vibes, compared to its sister location, Seorai, which has a more laid-back vibe with more dishes catered to drinking. My friends and I ordered short rib, Suwon galbi, and mul naengmyun since that's the perfect combo. Their Suwon galbi is lightly marinated and my friend actually recommended this over their marinated galbi because it's not as sweet. The server came by to grill our meats for us and made sure we had refills of the banchan. The soy bean paste soup that came with the meat was pretty standard and the mul naengmyun was refreshing. I saw that they had a pretty extensive menu now, with stone pot rice and other various dishes, so I'll love to come back and give them a try. read more

We ordered Dog Platter A and it was the perfect amount for 3 people. I am looking forward to returning to try other items on the menu. We've been coming to Chungdam for special occasions and casual dinners for the past four years. We are so in love with this restaurant. Not once have we been disappointed. It's a shame I'm just leaving a review (I thought I left one already given how often we come here and how much we love it). We recently came again and tried the braised beef with rice cake. It was the best galbijim I've ever had. Beats Daeho and other restaurants by several hundred miles. Super tender, lightly sweetened. I was going to share with my husband but ate the whole thing myself (1000 calories?). We also recommend the squid and pork belly. If you want meat grilled in front of you, we recommend the Galbi. The ban chan they serve isn't always the same, it's rotated depending on the chef! We got the following: - Japchae: pretty good and tasty! would order again. - Seafood pancake: really crunchy, tasted good too. - BBQ platter B: came with 4 different kinds of short ribs and ribeye steak. we enjoyed it but we did find it pricey. Food is bland. They only give you 4 side dishes which is a sin for a Korean restaurant. They charge you for the ssam (lettuce). They don't seem to believe in using salt in their dishes or any type of flavoring. I doubt the beef is prime as there was no marbling in the meat. Just such a disappointment. read more

We ordered the bbq platter A, which has galbi, NY steak, bulgogi and pork belly. It also comes with a soup and salad and of course all the side dishes. The waitresses were super efficient and polite, they would cut the meat and set it on the side for us. All the side dishes can be refilled and they served us readily. Love the interior decoration, it was minimal and modern. Lastly, we got half a mochi each as dessert. Pretty good overall experience, kind of expected to the higher price tag. 4.5/5! I've been looking forward to trying Korean BBQ in this area for a few months and this did not disappoint! Everything tasted great and I honestly can't say which dish I liked the best. First of all, the restaurant is unassuming from the outside but is very nice on the inside. It's bright, open, clean and has almost an upscale-casual aesthetic. They also have BBQ and non-BBQ tables, if you don't feel like doing the grilling (my group wanted to but we opted for the non-grill table due to the wait time). As mentioned, all the food was great. The seafood pancake was crispy and had a good amount of filling, like pretty big chunks of octopus. I'm not normally one for cold soba, but I also really enjoyed the cold noodle dish! The wait staff actually helped cut and serve the shareable bowl into a nice presentation, and the dish was very flavorful. Both the galbi and pork belly were super tender, and not excessively fatty (but enough for good taste). The only thing that was a little disappointing was that we couldn't get the meat platter or mix / match multiple meats without being at a BBQ table. The service was good and food came out fast. Only minor things - it would've been nice if some of the food was spaced out a little more, since it was overwhelming to have everything come out at once, and we didn't get any water refills! I'm so so so sad to write this updated review because I've been to Chungdam multiple times and it's always been great, until my most recent visit. I came on a Friday night with a party of two and we ordered the chungdam galbi, pork belly, and the steamed egg. Since I've been here multiple times, I know that when you order 2 bbq items, it comes with rice and a soup. However, after our first meat was already cooked, the rice and soup still hadn't come out so I asked our server if the rice was coming and she was surprised that we wanted it. It's complimentary, so why wouldn't I want it? Assuming that we wouldn't want it and not giving it to us made me feel like they were withholding it to save a few dollars, but it's literally just rice so I don't understand why our server didn't give it to us when it literally comes with the meal. Anyways, the main reason why my updated review is only 2 stars is because of the earlier incident I mentioned PLUS the fact that the chungdam galbi was SO CHEWY!! When the a la carte item is $90+, it really is unacceptable that it was so chewy. It was absolutely disappointing. I don't know if the quality has gone down or if the server overcooked it, but it was so bad... My most recent experience makes me second guess if I would ever come back here... read more
