I love everything about this place! It's quaint but elegant, with an attentive staff. While pastries aren't normally my thing, I love the house made bagels (crispy and chewy), flaky croissants, and their cakes! Carrot cake to die for! What I really love most are their savory offerings. My fave is the French frittata, but I've enjoyed the crepes, Caesar salad with incredible juicy chicken, charcuterie, and their vegan cauliflower soup. I had the rosemary ham, gorgonzola & honey smoked bacon sandwich yesterday. It was the best sandwich I've had in recent memory. I mean really delicious. Funny enough I've never been much of a croissant person. Anyways, the proteins are of the highest quality and I was impressed for the first time in my life by butter lettuce. I've had a few other things on the menu in the past, but this was my favorite. What a fun addition to the Coronado dining scene! We came for breakfast and delighted in the quiche and the frittata. Our server, Mariana, did a super job of making our visit a delightful experience. The prices were reasonable, especially since the food was so good. We sat on the patio, so we walked past stacks of tasty looking baked items. I wanted to sample each one! Great little spot. From the service to the decor and the pastries and coffee were all spot on. Had a chocolate croissant with a cappuccino and my girlfriend had coffee and an apple turnover. We originally thought this was a quick little stop - but turns out it's really popular! We thought the food was good, service really sweet but a bit slow due to how busy it was. There was a bit of a wait for the table we needed. We really liked being able to sit outside (on the sidewalk). The retro diner inside, while interesting, was really cramped, so not for those who are concerned about social distancing. My husband and I have been here countless times. I love the scones. And thank you, Andrew P. for writing me after I reviewed Clayton's the first time. But, Andrew P., I have one question. Why doesn't the owner (she has curly blond hair, right?) ever say HELLO to the customers? Or even the regulars??? We've dropped $11.80/day (two coffees and a scone) for months and we never got a HELLO or a THANK YOU from her. I know she's the owner because she was featured on "Wonderland" with Noah Tafollah. I've worked in the restaurant/bar business in NYC for over a decade and all the owners I worked for ALWAYS had a good rapport with the customers - especially the regulars. One time, she was even standing next to my husband by the register and she didn't even acknowledge him. She was too busy with something else. That's too bad because you should never be too busy to get to know the people that come in and support your business. Well, you're lucky you have a friendly staff that makes up for your BUSY owner. We accidentally ordered sweets at the bakery but then got a table next door to order savory. 4 of us shared an Oatmeal Crème cookie, 2 macaroons, 2 Nutella donuts, and a Manhattan cookie. They went great with their yummy coffees. For savory, we ordered the Breakfast Wrap - fantastic homemade Italian sausage, thin homemade tortillas and the best habanero sauce (we bought a little jar of the sauce to go). The waitstaff are great, and it's a dog friendly spot! To manage expectations, important to note that this is not a speedy place if you want to grab something to go. They make everything fresh from when you order, it's always busy, so it takes some time to get food and drinks. I don't mind, in fact I prefer taking my time and enjoying the atmosphere of the cute French cafe. We were loyal customers of Clayton's and really enjoyed the quality of the French-inspired dishes. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, the customer service and food quality have eroded this year. Ordering takes anywhere from 10-30 minutes depending on the line. Previous posters have also voiced their frustration and the management has done nothing to fix the problem. How about a second cashier? Switch to waited tables where they can handle the ordering/billing more efficiently? It's one year into COVID so you can't keep beating that dead horse. In the past, the food quality was very high. Now all of the hot breakfast dishes get to your table cold. We were recently served cold turkey sausage, cold quiche and cold coffee (when ordered extra hot). It's disgusting and unappetizing. We have also come for a late brunch (2pm) only to be told that their kitchen was closed, so they could only serve us tea, coffee and baked goods. That doesn't inspire confidence! Has the owner checked out? Why is no one fixing these obvious problems? We really enjoy supporting local restaurants but Clayton's has lost our business because they no longer care about their customers. read more

This was a hidden gem that we found while on vacation at Coronado. We ate there for 3/4 breakfasts during our stay. Everything is fresh, flavorful and beautifully plated. We ordered the Madame Croquette and it is amazing! 5/5!!! We also had Orange Juice, which was really good!. My croissant was flaky and delicious. We also had quiche Lorraine, and it was good, but a little too much onion.... it also comes with fresh fruit, bonus! On our last day we were surprised with two cookies that were out of this world! Claytons is the perfect place to wind down and enjoy your mornings! I got an amazing Oat milk vanilla latte, and a croque madame on sourdough! Everything about it was delish. My partner got a Honey Cinnamon latte which was one of the best lattes I've ever had. For brunch he got the breakfast wrap, and it was so flavorful. There is outside seating in the front to people watch and in the back to get some peace and quiet. They have parking in the back so you don't have to worry about street parking as well! In our case, our food came out faster than our drinks, but the server was very understanding at our frustration and kept our water glasses filled.
