WARNING: Eating at this establishment could cause you to become seriously ill and I don't mean just disgusted because of the lack of good food or service, I mean like Sharp Coronado ER with food poisoning sick. This place is filthy. The waitresses AND management and beyond rude and unprofessional. Saying this place is filthy is being gracious and the food is HORRIBLE. The hash browns are browned leftover mashed potatoes. Don't let the line outside the door fool you. The fact that this establishment is still open is beyond humam comprehension. The OWNER should be ASHAMED of themselves. ZERO pride of ownership. ZERO quality control or concern for the basic health of patrons. I will be contacting the health department Monday morning. It was raining this morning and I decided to keep it local and just grab some breakfast on the Island so I gave this place a try. HUGE mistake. As to not cause a spectacle I left and decided to call and speak with management in private but before I did so I documented my observations because I knew I had a duty to alert the health department come Monday. When I did call I was told I was speaking to a manager and once I began to speak I was without notice rudely dismissed and passed over to another female manager. The fact that this was going on with TWO managers on duty is mind blowing. No food should be coming out of this place period. Management should have shut down breakfast service, apologized and had place cleaned from floor to ceiling literally. Basic cleanliness has been ignored for months. This type of filth does not occur over night or even over the span of two months, 3 months. Management acknowledged ceiling fans over head are NOT cleaned. Yum. No more words wasted. Pros: - the place is really cute. It's an "authentic" American diner, with red leather booths, jukeboxes etc... - ideally located on Coronado Island. If you want to eat brunch and then go to the beach, or to visit the famous hotel. It's a charming little island. - service was good. Waitresses are nice and we did not had to wait too long for our meals. - I have tried the acaï bowl, yogurt with granola and smoothie mango. While my husband tried a panini with avocado and bacon, and a strawberry milkshake. Each meal was simple and very good ! - perfect price/quantity ratio. Cons: - too loud. It's a very small restaurant and it's usually crowded, so they can not really do something about it. read more

I had a couple of hours to kill in Coronado and my stomach was all growly, so I decided to hit up Clayton's. I'd been there for lunch a few years back and remembered it as a nice spot. Last week I got the "breakfast special #3: fruit bowl w/bread" It's not a signature dish, more of a healthy choice, so I didn't expect a lot. The bowl of fruit was a good size and all of the fruit was excellent, nothing under or overripe. I chose the pumpkin bread, which was pretty tasty, but learned later that the banana bread is actually made on-site, so i probably woulda chosen that had i asked beforehand :P They also make their apple pies on-site and they look homemade, but I've heard they are very yummy. The coffee was good, not awesome, but the service was exceptional...my coffee was refilled several times!! i came outta there with a definite bounce to my step!! The last time i went, a few yrs ago, what really stood out in my mind was the chili cheese fries. My daughter ordered it. it was around $6 and HUGE!!! we ended up sharing (3 of us). The chili tasted homemade and was nice and fresh--with tomatoes and stuff, not just a blob of canned meat. I noticed a lot of people ordering pancake plates. I visit Southern Cali about once a year and always make sure I stop at Clayton's on my way home from Coronado Beach. I am hooked on the grilled cheese on challah bread...my mouth is watering thinking about it! Best part? It's big enough to take home half for snacking later. The atmosphere of the place is retro and service is so nice! I love the aprons the wait staff wears (they are for sale in the shop, too!). Pairing food with one of their famous shakes is a must :) Prices are very reasonable (of course, this may be due to the fact that I'm comparing it to what I spend in NYC...) I spend about $12-15 when I'm there. Looking forward to my next visit! read more

Huge menu selection. This is the place to go, if you don't know what you want to eat or if you're with a few people and all want different things. Looking at your standard American fare (salads, burgers, pasta, etc). I had the roast beef sandwich. The meat was very good, but was swallowed up by the sourdough bread that it was on. Their shakes looked really good, but I was trying to stick to a slightly healthier option, so I opted out of that. Very friendly service, but it took a while to get our orders. There's not much seating inside and it's a bit tight... we were lucky to be seated right away, but we didn't go during the rush. I do like this place for the nostalgia and atmosphere more than anything but the food really is decent as well. Place: Your on Coronado Island that should count for something all by itself, right? An original diner that started I believe back in the 1940's. Love the history of places like this, I hope these kind of places stick around for another 65 years. Homemade corn beef hash was very good. My eggs were cooked perfectly. often times i ask for over medium and the yolk is over cooked. i took one star away because of the h ash browns. Hash browns were ok, i tend to like my potatoes grated not chunky, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a nice butter flavor. Love the 50's style atmosphere. Ate at the counter which has old fashion juke boxes. Get there early, there is always a line of customers waiting to be seated. Excellent customer service. Worst diner experience we've had. Dined here while vacationing with the family and recommended by others. Staff were not friendly or attentive. They even seemed like they didn't want to be there. Flies all over the place and very cramped. Kept hearing glasses or plates getting broken inside the kitchen. Ordered the pork chop dinner and had no taste at all. I had to pour Tabasco just to get some flavoring. We also tried the Chicken fried steak which had hair in the gravy. Yuck! Never coming back. Best breakfast in Coronado and an easy walk from the Del. Yesterday I had Banana ricotta pancakes with pecans. Today I had a omelet. Pancakes were my favorite. My daughter fell in love with the chocolate chip pancakes and ordered them both days. Diner style restaurant with countertop seating plus table top jukeboxes that work with songs of yesterday. Waitress almost bit my head off when I walked in door at 2:30pm because I didn't wait for a hostess! Only four people at the counter.

Aside from the cool/old school diner layout, I had an underwhelming experience. The food was mediocre (at best slightly above average). But the service was horrible. We were "waited on" by Cheryl, but really, we did all the waiting. She consistently ignored my fiancee and I for our entire meal. It took us almost two hours to complete our breakfast. She was constantly in the back and even when she returned to the dining area, continued to ignore us. One of the worst servers I've ever had. read more

Odd counter service, they talk cheerily to each other but somehow don't communicate with each other when it comes to orders or requests for the bill. Really enjoyed Clayton's Coffee Shop. Order right and know how to enjoy your surroundings? Then you'll love Clayton's too. We started with Strawberry-Banana-Blueberry smoothies, with almond milk and flaxseeds. Then coffee, chicken and waffles and a bagel sandwich with bacon instead of ham and extra crispy hash browns. The smoothies were large and tasty and the coffee was strong. The super crispy, well seasoned fried chicken and a fluffy, sweet waffle were even even better than expected. I love a bagel sandwich and this one was not a let down. Toasty bagel and a ton of eggs and bacon. The hash browns were crispy, as requested. All of our food came out in a flash and piping hot. Love the working jukebox and breakfast all day. Didn't love the belgian waffle - had some flavor I couldn't identify but didn't like. The rest of my family liked their food - chic chip pancakes (just chocolatey enough), banana pancakes and a turkey, bacon and avocado sandwich, which was quite large as far as sandwiches go. You really go here for the atmosphere - the breakfast food is standard. I ordered the french toast stack - french toast, ham, eggs, cheese, and hash browns - was not prepared that they would dump syrup on everything before delivering. Omelet was as good as any of 100 other omelets - nothing special. Carry out window is convenient. Again, go for the atmosphere and sit at the counter, nosier than your standard place as a result. read more

Delicious stick to your ribs comfort food in a restaurant reminiscent of a 50's diner! Although we only had breakfast there my family loved it so much we went 3 days in a row. Recommend the hash browns well done as they taste more like little potato chips vs. the usual potato cubes. Really good. Yogurt bowl was big and satisfying with granola, honey & banana and the the omelets also big & fluffy. Also make some of the best pies in Southern Cali. Not sure about the hype on this place. The service is definitely great. Can't say about the food. I ordered basic breakfast combo, eggs, french toast, & sausage. My sausages were gross, over cooked & chewy. The waitress was sweet to noticed and brought me a new plate but the new sausages were then under cooked :-(. I like the variety of milkshakes, other than that it's just any other diner out there & nothing specific about this place screams "wow". Giving it a 3 star would consider being generous. read more

Katie and Jaoa made the beginning of our day much better almost made mistake of eating breakfast with hotel Coronado. Luckily my wife and I followed our instincts and decided to park and find a local flourishing quaint establishment. This paid off when we landed at Clayton's Coffee Shop staff was so friendly and you can tell Katie enjoys what she does and loves people. Jaoa is a fine young man and while he poured our coffee shared with us some valuable information regarding imperial beach. I am a navy veteran and my wife is a nurse and we will always make it a point to stop by and enjoy a good coffee and breakfast here. Customer service was excellent and food was superb. read more

We walked into Clayton's today on 02/02/2020 at 1:15. We sat down and were looking at the menu. We brought our service dog in with us. The waitress ask us what we wanted to drink. She saw our dog and said sorry we don't allow dogs in here. I responded my dog is a service dog. She was like what kind of service dog. I said a service dog for PTSD. She then responded and said sorry our facility doesn't allow that kind of service dog. Your dog can only be serviced for diabetes. I kept my mouth shut and we walked out of the building. My dog went through training and got serviced to be with my boyfriend all the time. My boyfriend was in the military and suffers from PTSD. So you're telling me that your dog can only be in a restaurant if you have diabetes. No! I looked on my dogs paperwork. He's allowed into any building, unless he's causing ruckus. He was completely silent and on my lap. My boyfriend and I will never go back to Claytons. I'm so upset by the way we were treated. Sad that other Coronado business have no problem with our dog, but Clayton's is special. So since they refuse my service dog. I refuse to ever go there again. read more

Fantastic little diner in Coronado. They have all the classics here (burgers, sandwiches, salads, open faced roast beef sandwiches covered in gravy...yum). The place is small and it can get packed with a lot of tourists especially at breakfast but it's worth stopping by. They also have a to-go window around the corner if you're looking to grab a coffee and a snack. read more

I work close to this place and always walk by it when I go to get food for lunch. Yesterday I went here for lunch and I have to say its a pretty good place. Sat around the counter area which is interesting cause it covers most of the place, giving it that 1950's diner appeal The menu has a lot of options to choose from, so I ordered the Tuna Melt which was pretty good too. Didn't have to wait too long for the food. They had shakes too but didn't order it cause I was full, maybe next time. Overall it was a nice place to sit and relax during my lunch break, would definitely come back again to try their other food. read more

This is really a step back in time, took my family here while visiting my sailor, The London Broil Sandwich was awesome, rest of the family went for a late breakfast and everyone thought it was great.
