This is a hidden gem of Coronado. I can no longer come to the crown island without stopping for a burrito. My absolute favorite is the Coronado burrito while the California burrito has my husband's heart. The burritos are the perfect amount of massive wrapped in the tastiest, softest tortillas I've ever had in my life made by Santa Fe Tortillas (you can find the same tortillas at Sprout's in East Lake! DELICIOUS.) Their burritos come with hot sauce and the green one is my go-to. Burritos range from about $8-14 but for the size, taste, amount of filling - they don't skimp on the meat and guac - it's worth it. I'm a penny pincher and I promise you these burritos are worth the dimes. In the last few years they added a soda fountain where you can mix flavors. Decided to give this place a try on a whim. I was tired of leaving the island to find a decent burrito and hesitant to give this place a try due to its low rating. Cons- Small location with 2 picnic tables and a bench for seating. Parking can be a nightmare! I literally drove around 4 times and still ended up parking a block away. Make sure you go after 6pm if you want to avoid paying for street parking. Customer service isn't the best. First cashier did not speak English. Second cashier although efficient lacked personality and was far from friendly. Pros- After a horrendous experience with parking and customer service I expected the worst. I ordered 3 original California burritos ($7.95). They were ready in under 15 minutes absolutely AMAZING! Best California burrito I have had in San Diego. The seasoned meat alone is incredible. The homemade tortilla and generous filling is pure bliss. Highly recommend the original (steak) California burrito and green salsa. You will not be disappointed. Only wish they would add shrimp to their original California burrito options. Currently they list steak, chicken, pork, and vegetable. The closest they have is a shrimp burrito ($9.50) which comes with rice instead of fries. When I requested to swap the rice for fries I was told it was an additional $2. Stopped by to give Clayton's another shot. It turns out that we wasted our time and money. Two breakfast burritos with carne asada set us back $24.00. I know prices are going up, but that seems extreme. On top of that, the burritos were flavorless and sad. This was the final straw. Showed up an hour before closing and they were closed. Asked them about it and they said it had to do with staffing issues but hooked it up with probably the best chicken burrito and fish taco I've had in my life. Update regarding the business response: as I stated, it's close to my home, so that's why I have returned hoping that it might exceed my expectations. The Clayton's restaurant is yummy! It's only the Mexican takeout I am referring to. For this particular occasion my boyfriend was gracious enough to grab me some food without my asking, which is why I gave it another go. My review was honest and not meant to slander, I am sorry that the business disliked my critique and became defensive. The portion sizes are good, and service is quick. Couple days ago on June 07, 2020, I ordered a veggie burrito. My server was MTO M at 12:31 PM. Meal came out fast but when I opened it up for eating, it all smelled like carnage. I checked inside the wrap and it looked vegetarian, but the tortilla wrap itself was not prepared as vegetarian. It had a strong smell of meat. I still do not know how they did it and since I already drove away, did not go back to find it out. Just a warning here to all other vegetarian lovers, do not go here for food. Is the second time around better than the first experience? Unfortunately, Cayton's still not up to par. It was pretty gross and saw major health violations this time, eek! As I was waiting for my order, I noticed the Cashier wiped his nose on his shirt a few times while managing the cash register and packing the food without washing his hands. All I was thinking of was to wash my hands when he handed my money. If only the Health Inspector sees this. As for food, I had ordered the nacho and 3 tacos. I would stay away from the nacho unless you really love a whole lot of grease. They didn't even bother draining since it melted the to-go box. I would Never return to Clayton's Mexican takeout. There was a big ass cockroach in my chicken quesadilla, grossed me out and I had taken eaten two bites. I was sick as a dog, throwing up all day and had to go to the hospital. The cashier was preparing the small salsa cups with no gloves touching the inside of every cup before adding the salsa after bringing it to her attention she kept working and this was after I brought the roach quesadilla back. I had high hopes this would be exactly like it was when I lived on the island. It wasn't. Apparently everyone and their brothers found out this little take out window (now room) was here. The wait was crazy long, the line inside streaked outside but folks inside had no idea who was in what line. Overall just chaotic. The menu is very large compared to what it was 15 years ago, so the growth is wonderful for Clayton's, but awful for patrons! LOL Got to the front and was glad to see a pen and paper order go in, but then we had to wait for it to be entered into the cash register. The guy then started bagging up orders for others while I stood with my card out to pay. We went in around 12:45 and it was FULL of sailors/pilots. Everyone wanted food ASAP and it just wasn't happening. After placing our order, we stood over to the left side against the back wall, a man came from the attached diner holding a plate of food, went in the back causing the line to have to move, put some guac on the side and then carried the same plate back thru the lobby and into the kitchen of the front diner. I'm telling myself that this plate was for him tho in my gut I know that someone's order just trekked all that way and thru a bunch of sweaty people. NOT COOL. There seemed to be a few disgruntled people who placed orders online who were there presumably on a time crunch who were very irate about standing in the same line as orders, kinda defeats the purpose of preordering! The food was good, tho skimpier portions than I remember. Our burritos were fairly flat but the taste was just as wonderful! The asada was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. But for $25 for 3 burritos I wanted to be full. (all 3 of us went in search of a snack down Orange after eating at the tables across the street in the courtyard infront of the laundry mat. A few notes: There is VERY VERY VERY minimal seating. Eat here at a time other than lunch if you can, plan for waiting around. They only give tiny frozen containers of green salsa, so as for other options maybe? I wish we knew this before trekking across the street. No bathrooms. I've gotten the California burrito from here a couple times and it's always so good. The steak is seasoned good and there's a good amount of cheese, fries, and sour cream in there too. The place itself is a little hole in the wall place with only like 2 tables outside so you can't really eat there but the beach is super close by. This place was recommended by a co-worker who is a local and works on the island on the air base. At first I thought the first window for Clayton's was what she was talking about but she had told me it was a local's favorite with authentic Mexican foods and I only saw one burrito on the menu.... Also, don't get it twisted - Clayton's has a take-out window which is more like the diner foods... donuts, coffee, sandwiches and other items. This is specifically for the Mexican only take out window which is standing room only, fresh and authentic Mexican take out located just to the right of the Clayton's take-out walk-up window. Confused? I get it. I was too and almost missed this gem. After looking around I saw a bunch of airmen in their flight suits walking in a nondescript doorway and peeked inside here - this is it! A friendly lady behind the counter took the order for three fish tacos and we waited at the picnic tables outside for about 5 minutes until she called our number. Tiny little place with street parking only. There is minimal seating that could greatly benefit from umbrellas or some other form of shade. The star of their menu is the burritos where they have some creative combinations that although are not really "Mexican" are surprisingly good. The horchata is also quite good. However the shrimp tacos were underwhelming - overly doused in sour cream. Bring your appetite! I wanted to try the red chilaquiles as well as the chorizo breakfast burrito. I've got some capacity to put away a serious amount of food and I couldn't even finish the beans and hash browns that came with the chilaquiles! Burrito is gonna have to wait until tomorrow. Would have been nice if the chips were a little bit thicker and still had some crunch to them, and the option to have the eggs over easy would be good, but really I'm splitting hairs. The flavor of the dish was really darn good. Maybe next time I'll ask if they can go over easy on the eggs, but overall I'd order again as is. It's a little on the spicy side so if you're averse to some heat, don't get the red version. I like a moderate amount of spice and this was pretty much the perfect ratio of heat to flavor for me. read more

We stopped here on vacation for some to-go Mexican food. We tried the Carne Asada street tacos (delish), Beef rolled tacos, California burrito and a Carne Asada Breakfast burrito. All were tasty and would order again. Both the red and green salsa had very good flavor. It would have been 5 stars. However, the chips we ordered were over done. They tasted bland and burnt. So let me start off with saying this is one of the best burritos I've had in a very long time. Got a California burrito which is loaded with fries, sour cream and cheese. They definitely don't skimp on the portions, this thing was STUFFED!!!! I was a happy camper at the end of my meal.
