This is literally the worst Italian food I have ever had in my life. It was so bad the dog wouldn't even eat it. I spend $38 on something called Malfati. Literally tasted like dog food. And the had to audacity to charge $5 for a .50 cent foil pan. When she sold me the platter she said that bread came with it, but it never did. When we went back in for the bread the little caught an attitude and said that "your friend never paid for the bread". Well wtf did I pay $38 for, exactly? A tray full of slip and dumplings. Smfh. I've been eating the Malfatti since I was a kid and Clemente was at the Depot, then I continued with Val's, and last year I went to his 'new' location in the Food Mill. Each time I was helped by his daughter, who can be very pushy and abrasive. As other commenters have said, she makes you feel guilty or ashamed for different things. Last year, I called to order my usual 10 dozen malfatti for Christmas. She started whispering on the phone about 'things' that were going on in their new business, and requested I bring cash to pay. On the day I came to pay and pick up, she came up to the register and rang me up for 7 dozen malfatti (not 10), then insisted on walking me out to the car, at which time she collected the balance of the money for the malfatti in cash, and complained that the owner of the Food Mill was charging them too much for using the kitchen, saying that they would be moving soon, and to watch their Facebook. At the time, I paid $8 a dozen. I didn't mind paying that, but I left with a very bad feeling, first for her not ringing up the full 10 dozen, then here collecting for the balance in cash out by my car. The whole deal felt really dirty. I discussed with other family who used to go there, and they all said go to Lawler's! Cheaper and just as good. So this year, that's what I'm doing. Be careful when ordering. Stick to your guns and don't get pressured y o order more, or given something you didn't ask for. Before today, I had been to clementes once and been happy. However I just stopped in while in town, came inside to order and the woman working there basically told me we needed to get 4 pastas and a meatball instead of the 2 pastas I wanted. Okay, fine we'll have lots of leftovers. When I went to pick it up, they'd slopped everything into one disposable lasagna pan and told me the other containers I would have had to request specially when ordering (wtf I'm ordering by the pint and I expect it to come in pints, the same way you're serving everyone else). This in spite of the fact that I paid a $5 "special container" fee at the register. I just feel pushed around and really disappointed. We wanted 2 pints we could takeaway and eat in the car, and instead ended up with a plastic wrapped lasagna pan full of mixed pasta that we won't be able to open until we get home in two hours. Cannot stop smiling while thinking about this literal hole in the wall- inside a liquor store. We were searching for a nice, unique dinner in Napa- but our budget was busted. Clemente's ended up being the perfect solution. Probably looking super leery and unsure the woman at the front stole our hearts as she very sweetly and gregariously offered us suggestions. She happened to be Val's daughter and seems to have been in the business all her life. She wove in really sweet family stories as she guided us through the menu. Of course we wanted to try Napa's own "malfatti" - which were really delicious and flavorful cheesy spinach morsels. She also recommended we try the gnocci- "You can get get ravioli other places, you can get gnocci other places too- but you're NEVER going to find gnocci like this anywhere else" I think she was absolutely right- the gnocci melted in our mouths- so light and creamy. You have got to try it! Both our malfatti and gnocci were thrown together in 1 large container with their incredible rich red sauce. Seriously home grown, hearty comfort food. Finally, she seemed to sense my husband would be up for something a little different and recommended the sweetbreads. Only recognizing this term from Hannibal Lector- I was a little concerned--- thinking they were brains.... Turns out they are actually organ "meat" from the neck. Thymus. Sweetbreads can be other organs, but Val's were thymus. Or so that's what we were told-ha. She said they only had one pint left, so of course that pushed us over the edge and we agreed to add it to our order. I'm not usually or ever an organ meat eater- but they were really good. You could tell a lot of time had gone into their preparation. Soaked, seared, and cooked in a really pleasant white wine sauce with mushrooms and onions. So tender, and not irony tasting at all. We were also lucky enough to be there when they had a free sample extra treat on the counter. I have no idea what she called it- but it was ravioli scraps fried and dusted in cinnamon sugar. ahhh so good-try it if you happen to see it on the counter! We also ordered a loaf of French bread to share- she even sliced it for us, sensing we were going to be eating in a hotel room. We didn't have our own containers, not a big deal at all. We were coming back from Napa wine tasting on a Thursday and didn't really have the time, $$'s or inclination to eat in at another restaurant. Looked like a hidden gem. There are only 2 spots in the parking lot, we got one of them. Went inside ordered a veal sandwich - Good, but very messy and not enough meat. Every time I go to Napa California I have to go to Clemente's authentic eyetalian take out restaurant. I have been eating Malfatti from the Depot since I was a little kid. Although the depot is no longer a restaurant Clemente's is still making the Malfatti. You bring your own pan and then order however much you want. I remember as a kid sitting in the kitchen at the depot waiting for my order to be filled and they often gave me a salad while I waited. On food taste/quality alone, I would rate Clemente's at 3/3.5 stars. It's filling, and I don't have any significant issues with the quality of ingredients or the overall taste of the dishes. My overall rating centers around a couple factors: 1) the food is over-rated. Again, I think the entrees are fine in and of itself and if your expectation is takeout-quality Italian food, then you'll likely be satisfied. But that shouldn't equate to an almost five-star overall community rating; I can't help but think that much of Clemente's overall community rating is due to local bias. 2) there are some oddities with this joint that I have experienced, and you'll also notice these issues crop up in other Yelp reviews of Clemente's. The main oddity is the container charge, which is clearly marked on their menu, but when you go to pay for your takeout, is often up-charged or double-charge on your receipt, without your knowledge. The other oddity is the $5 "cash-tip" payment for the bread. There is no reason why one should have to pay cash for the bread when you're allowed to pay for the rest of your meal on a credit card. It all feels very under-the-table, and contributes to the distrust patrons might feel toward Clemente's, a distrust that Clemente's really and easily should avoid by just being up-front with its patrons. read more

I read about Clemente's a couple of months ago on an NPR article, of all places. I was curious, and asked my girlfriend who lives in Napa if she's been. Since she had, and it sounded like a regular spot for her, I knew I needed to check it out the next time I was in town. I also asked another person, who I met at Paraduxx, and she recommended it as well. Located inside Val's liquor, Clemente's has a full kitchen, serving quite a spread. Since I had gone in looking specifically for Malfatti, that's what I had to get. My friend's husband said that the Meatball Subs looked delicious, so I decided to pickup an order of Meatballs, as well. 1 dozen Malfatti $4.50 1 pint Meatballs $9.99 You order at the counter, then pay at the liquor store counter. Everything is take out. Since everything I ordered was in the same meat sauce, they put them all together in same pan, which travelled well, all the way home, 90 miles! Holy wow this place is AMAZING. I love hole in the wall mom and pop places to eat and this definitely fits into that category! Honestly, I found this place by searching restaurants nearby. We had just got into Napa after driving from downtown San Francisco and I really didn't want to go anywhere hip or fancy. I needed something comforting that wouldn't break the bank. The reviews were great and there was only one "$" so naturally we had to try it....and all the talk in the reviews about the malfatti had me very curious! This take out restaurant is IN a liquor store. You go in and the window is right there....it's where you order and where you can see the owners working together. Joanne was SO helpful with taking my order and explaining everything. After you order, you pay at the liquor counter (unless you buy bread...it needs to be paid in cash and put in a container on the order window. A little odd but whatevs....it's how they roll! We didn't have to wait very long. Joanne packed everything up for us and made sure we had utensils and we were off to the hotel room! OH MY GOSH. We ordered the gnocchi and malfatti with meat sauce, side salad, and a quarter loaf of bread. Everything was just under $20 and was just enough for my husband and I. Mind you we hadn't really eaten much earlier in the day and we were starving! It was the perfect portion for us to share. Omg the gnocchi? THEY'RE LIKE EATING FLUFFY CLOUDS OF AWESOMENESS. The malfatti? Omg. Soooo tasty! It's basically their ravioli filling without actual pasta around it...only rolled in flour then boiled. The food was good. The shenanigans were awful. I wouldn't recommend this place despite the stellar reviews which is how we came to find it. Picture this: you enter a liquor store to find a cute little Italian to-go business and a slick talking older Italian lady tells you she's spotted you as intimidated (we were not, but definitely tourists / first timers). Then proceeds to tell you that there are two types of people who walk through - 1) locals who know it's good and 2) people who want to try a bit of everything since they haven't been here before (suckers). But she quickly convinces you that's not the move, she'll set you up like she does every newby -- the works, it's a great deal and you're paying less than if you would anywhere else for dinner (you get the feeling she's this Italian grandma taking care if you) so you don't questions quantity or prices, even though you told her you just wanted enough food for 2 people and to tell us if we're going overboard at any point. We think this nice lady is taking care of us - we agree to go with her order: Malfatti Ravioli Gnocchi Pint of meatballs (3 meatballs, about 1.5 inch diameter, hardly a pint) Bread (loaf) Risotto, quart (which you don't even really know if you like, but she tells you it's can't miss) Pot Roast, quart You go to checkout.. Then the surcharge on surcharge begins (fine print on menu we didn't notice since we haven't seen this anywhere else, ever) - $.55, $.55, 55, $.45 processing fee and what we thought was a $5.00 charge for a loaf of bread. Total comes out around $75.00. You pay way more than you expected but you're hopeful that this food is the stuff of legends that you'll be recommending to friends on future Napa trips like the 4.5 on Yelp and 4.7 rating on google that it's achieved. Then while you're waiting for food, you hear the same lady argue with a local who had just paid $150 and the lady says the customer didn't pay for an item or two. Already taken aback at the total price, the customer refuses to pay anything more and just says give her what she paid for and she'll leave whatever else she didn't since she had just suffered through a debit card fee to pull cash out and didn't want to do it again. Then our turn...we're asked to pay $5.00 cash for the bread (but wait, there was a $5 charge on the receipt which she requested we hand over for her to keep), turns out that was for the ALUMINUM CONTAINER! $6.65 total for takeout containers! I would have been fine if they just added this into the cost of food, but this seems to be some sort of racket to charge for containers while pocketing the cost of bread paid in cash. Between the runaround, feeling like we got suckered, all the surcharges (we were "accidentally" charged for an extra container even) -- the meal couldn't make up for such a terrible ordeal. Holy shit, guys. This is a REAL Italian deli. Take from an Italian east coast girl. So flavorful. Such fresh ingredients. Such great prices! I had the spinach dumplings in marinara sauce (freaking delicious), and my partner had the pork roast sandwich. We absolutely loved both. The malfatti, ravioli, spaghetti, and minestrone soup were all good and I do recommend trying malfatti if you've never had it. The meatballs were okay. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the risotto. The issue was really the cost. We paid $95. This was a lot of food, so there is that, but even after trying it, $95 seems steep. Ordered here one night and got here a bit late so the selection was limited. However, still got to try their ravioli, meatballs, muffalati, gnocchi and minestrone soup. Overall, I liked the flavor but it was a tad too salty and everything was in the same sauce so the meal was very one note. On the plus side, the sauce was quite yummy on pasta the next day, so that was nice. They had also run out of garlic bread and the bread would have helped dilute some of the saltiness. I appreciated that the meatballs were not full of fillers and our friend compared them to his Italian grandmother's recipe. We loved the ravioli and the malfatti here (first time trying that particular dish!). The meat sauce is an "old school" gravy style sauce that's a deep, brick red that's thick and hearty, almost a soup on its own. The malfatti are just so light on the outside and tasty on the inside - this is also a good description for the ravioli. We fed or family of 3 for under $13 with a dozen ravioli, a dozen malfatti and a quarter of a loaf of bread. 2 downsides - and they are minor: 1. No nearby seating (we went to a nearby park to eat); and 2. You pay at the liquor store, so if you care about things like this, your crsit card company thinks you spent the money on booze as opposed to delicious Italian-American food. read more

This is a small establishment inside a liquor store. I had high expectations from this mom & pop place given its high praise on yelp. I ordered a dozen malfatti, ravioli and gnocchi. The woman taking my order recommended I use the large container for the 3 dozen so I took her words of advice. Upon looking closer at the menu, I noticed that they charge $2.25 for a large container, which essentially was a tin container from the dollar store. I could have used 3 pint containers for $0.45 each, which would have saved me close to a dollar. As for the food itself, I would have liked all 3 of the pastas to be firmer. The gnocchi was extremely mushy but the sauce was the lone savior for the meal. My gf and I agreed the sauce tasted great with bread but the pasta was mediocre. This is just an okay place to go to but not anything worth driving to Napa for. read more

If it had not been for Yelp and all the positive reviews for Clemente's I may never have tried the place. They must see people all day, but Clemente and his daughter still gave our group such a warm welcome today. They even came out to take a photo with us. They seem like a hard working family. Tour guide says Clemente makes sauce with fresh ingredients even on the day they are closed. We came to try the malfatti as part of Napa Segway tour. The malfatti was fresh and flavorful. The dumplings were soft with slight chewiness that gave it a nice texture. You can taste the herbs as you chew. The bolognese sauce was a nice contrast to the starchiness of the dumpling. You're telling me some of the best Italian food I've had in forever is in the back of a freaking liquor store. Are you kidding me? I wouldn't have believed it myself. And the pictures of the malfatti in takeout styrofoam cups isn't all that appetizing. But this is one of those times you're just gonna have to have faith in your fellow yelpers. I walked up to the counter and asked what was most popular. I was surprised by the friendliness... We are in the back of a liquor store after all. The worker gave me a complete rundown of the menu and cooking techniques, and I learned most all of the regulars get a half order of Malfatti (basically vegetarian ravioli) mixed with a half order of Ravioli. I opted for the quart size because of an irrational fear I had of walking away hungry. A quarter loaf of bread was just a dollar more so I added that on too. We drove over to a local park and sat at a picnic table enjoying our fresh to go order. Long story short... It's amazing. The malfatti and ravioli are pillow soft and soak up all that delicious meat sauce beautifully. I quickly learned the bread is an absolute must, because dipping it into your soup of marinara/malfatti/ravioli is the stuff dreams are made of. The bread is also necessary to balance out the soupy texture. The quart ended up being too much to finish in one sitting, mostly because the "quarter loaf" of bread was probably big enough to be a full loaf where I'm from. But if the quart means I was able to fit even one extra bite of that delicious malfatti into my stomach, then I'm still confident I made the right call. Overall, amazing meal.
