We ended our weekend Napa trip with a stop at Hog Island Oyster Co. in Oxbow Public Market, and it was such a perfect way to wrap up the trip. One thing to note: they do not take reservations, and lines can start forming as early as 20-30 minutes before opening on weekends. I know because I was absolutely one of the early line-uppers. The bar at Hog Island is definitely a vibe, especially if you enjoy watching the oysters being shucked right in front of you. That said, we decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and grabbed a seat on the patio instead. They also have heat lamps overhead, which was a nice touch in case it got a little chilly. We basically ordered as much as we could. The oyster bar mix was a great choice for sampling a variety of oysters, and the Sweetwaters ended up being my favorite. Honestly, I'd probably just order those next time. The grilled oysters were also amazing. We got the miso nori butter, and if we hadn't already ordered so much food, I definitely would have gotten another round. The rustic seafood stew was one of the biggest highlights of the meal. I genuinely don't know what they put in that stew, but it was so rich, cozy, and addicting. We also got the grilled cheese sandwich, which I tragically forgot to photograph, but it was perfect for dipping into the stew. Lastly, the mussels were wildly delicious. Make sure to scoop as much of that broth into the shell as possible before taking a bite, because that's where the full flavor effect really hits. Overall, Hog Island was such a memorable Napa experience. Between the oysters, the patio, and all that incredible seafood, I'd definitely come back the next time we visit. read more

We ordered 6 grilled oysters, oyster sandwich, and fries. First came the old bay fries and it was good! Then came the grilled oysters. These grilled oysters were the reason why I was coming back the 3rd time. The oysters were overcooked, each bite had so many oyster shell shards in it that my teeth felt like it was gonna crack! The best thing I had today was the fries. Everything else was just bad and no flavor. The waiter did not even check on us 1 time. It took some time to order, but the service was so amazing despite it being takeout. The Chelsea Gems had a beautiful balance of ocean salinity with a slightly sweet finish that kept us going back for the next one. I also had one of the most unbelievable Bloody Marys I've had in a long time. It was topped with Hog Island's famous Hog Wash -- that bright, vinegary mignonette with shallots and cilantro -- which added an amazing punch of flavor to the drink. We went for Happy Hour and sat at the bar. It's fun to watch them shuck the oysters. They make it look so easy. The clam chowder is so legit! There's no shortage of clams in it and it's delicious. My family and I stopped by Hog Island Oyster Co. after already grabbing a bite at Oxbow Marketplace, but we still needed to satisfy our oyster and clam chowder cravings--and this was the perfect place to do it. We were sat outdoors, but the heaters kept us toasty. We also didn't have to wait long before we were seated. I ordered the mixed raw oysters, which included Sweetwater, Highwater, and West Passage oysters. I love raw seafood, and these absolutely hit the spot. Trying all three helped me realize that Sweetwater oysters are my personal favorite, which made the experience even more fun. Everything was fresh and delicious, and I always appreciate learning more about my own taste preferences along the way. Our server was wonderful. Since I'm not always sure what I like, I asked which oysters were the biggest. He explained that sizes vary but suggested the mixed option and even said he'd make a note to try to select some of the larger oysters. I'm not sure if that actually happened, but I appreciated the effort--and I'm glad I went with the mix. We also shared a couple bowls of clam chowder and an order of Old Bay fries. The chowder is thinner than the super-thick, bread-bowl-style versions you might get at Fisherman's Wharf, in case that matters to you. I enjoy both styles, and this one was really tasty with great seafood flavor and very fresh clams. I've been to the Hog Island location at the Ferry Building in San Francisco, and the quality here was just as good. I also visited during the time of a salmonella outbreak linked to oysters in multiple states--and I'm happy to report I didn't get sick. Thankfully parking wasn't too terrible, we were able to park in the electric vehicle parking spot to charge the car. But overall, the entire parking lot was very packed when we drive in. I checked in at the restaurant and the hostess said it would be a 15 minute wait. I gave them my phone number since they said we would get a text when our table would be ready. We got a text actually after 2 minutes of waiting. The food and initial service were genuinely excellent, which makes the rest of this harder to write. I have 20+ years in restaurants and I don't leave critical reviews lightly. We had just started our second glasses of wine when I didn't set my glass down right (distracted by drag bingo) and it shattered, spilling everywhere including onto the oyster display case. I was mortified and started apologizing immediately, but the staff was not having it. The shucker looked furious and was angrily resetting the ice. The server wouldn't say a word or make eye contact, even while I was still apologizing. I felt so uncomfortable I stepped away to collect myself. While I was gone, the manager came over ostensibly to "see if everything was OK" and proceeded to lecture my friend about the safety issue of broken glass. My friend, also a restaurant professional, noted how icy and frankly hostile the service had become after a pretty common accident. The manager got defensive. When she suggested a courtesy splash would be appropriate, he said "we'll see when she gets back." When I returned, nothing had changed. No one checked in. There was still wine on the metal rim of the display case, which pretty much undercuts the safety and sanitation concern they kept citing. We decided to leave. The manager comped my unfinished glass with great fanfare, as though he were doing us an enormous favor, then launched into another safety lecture. Additionally, there is a 5% upcharge to assist with their employees' health insurance... welp, that helped me reduce the tip by 5% - I pay taxes to help with the health insurance safety net and did not think it is appropriate to push this requirement on the customer after they waited and sat down. This was my first time trying West Coast oysters, and I have to admit--they may have officially surpassed Gulf and East Coast oysters for me. Growing up in the South, chargrilled oysters typically meant lots of butter and cheese, which can sometimes overpower the oyster itself. At Hog Island, the chargrilled oysters were incredibly flavorful without being heavy, allowing the natural sweetness and brininess of the oysters to still shine through. The miso and BBQ flavored chargrilled oysters were so delicious, each offering bold, umami flavors that complemented rather than masked the oysters. The raw oysters were equally impressive. I can't remember the name of the smallest variety we tried, but don't let the size fool you--they were by far the sweetest of the four options. All of the raw oyster varieties were still very fresh and sweet. If you like low brininess, West Coast oysters are the way to go. The only underwhelming dish of the meal was the octopus salad. There was very little octopus in the dish, and the seasoning leaned overly salty for our taste, making it the one item we wouldn't order again. Everything paired beautifully with the summer sangria, which was refreshing and delicious. Overall, this was a fantastic experience, and I'd absolutely recommend stopping by if you're exploring Oxbow Market and looking for exceptional oysters in Napa. read more

Stopped by Hog Island at the Oxbow last week after a dog-costume Howl-o-ween event down the street, and it was everything I needed. I've been riding on their oyster train for a while now. This place is my go-to when I want someone scared of oysters to take the leap. And yep, they still deliver. Happy hour was on and oysters were $2.50 each, which is a pretty good steal in Napa. (Yes, I'm still wistfully hoping for the $1 oyster days .) You don't get to pick which oysters you get during happy hour, but the ones we got were fresh with just the right amount of brine. The Sweetwaters are my personal favorite, they always hit. The clam chowder? Top tier. Big clams in the shell, creamy yet light; perfectly done. (Side note: I found a rock in mine but it reminds me how fresh they are!) We also got the steamed clams in white wine broth with fennel sausage, kale and chili butter. And then we went for 4 of the grilled oysters with chipotle-bourbon sauce. Fire. The atmosphere is still so good. Open, lively, right in the heartbeat of Oxbow. Service was friendly and fast, everything felt seamless. If you're in Napa and haven't been here yet, you're missing out. As I had missed my opportunity when I was in SF. This location is at the very back of the market. The entire patio is dedicated to Hog Island and is covered/shaded for the most part. Our party of 10 waited about 30 minutes on a Saturday. The great part is, we did not have to wait in line, we just signed in and waited to be called. This allowed us to walk around the market and enjoy and snack at other venues. Since we nibbled around at the other spots. This was a light lunch or a heavy snack for us. We placed double orders of the following: Grilled oysters - One person in our group does not eat raw, so we go grilled oysters. The blood mary was the table favorite Clam steamers - once finished dip your fries in the leftover clam juice Garlic fries Littleneck clams - we ordered 18 claims and then they sold out for the day Mussells Abalone aguachile - I'm not a huge fan of abalone due to the chewy texture but I heard the flavor was good. Picked veggies (I did not expect much, but it was surprisingly well done and complemented all the seafood with a slight vinegary taste) Everything was very fresh. I would have tried the clam chowder had it not been so hot that day in Napa. We originally came for restaurant month which includes 6 sweet water oysters, market salad, and half grilled cheese for $35 but they were out of the sandwiches. They didn't have anything to substitute so we just went for the acme bread and butter, clam chowder, steamed mussels and clams and added pasta, and grilled oyster mix which came with 2 each of the flavored grill oysters. I was impressed with the clam chowder and the amount of clams in there that you have to work for but were really good! Paired well with a Pinot Gris. Hog Island Oyster Co. in Oxbow Market was a known quantity for us from our last visit to Napa almost 9 years prior. Hog Island is a straight forward oyster bar with a concise beverage list that leans heavily toward local/California selections with an eye to go well with their fresh seafood. I ordered a glass of white wine, the ARNYCA Albariño from St. Helena, which I thoroughly enjoyed with our food. We shared a dozen raw Hog Island Pacific oysters, cold Dungeness crab, Shishito Peppers, and bread & butter. The oysters and crab didn't disappoint in their deliciousness. Their freshness and memory-evoking smell of the ocean hit perfectly with my crisp, medium dry wine with nice acidity. The shishitos were winners and the bread...well, who doesn't love fresh, rustic bread? Hog Island Oyster Co. has remained remarkably unchanged, other than its prices, from what I remember from our previous visit. I felt that we got our money's worth in terms of what we received. While I certainly wasn't expecting white glove, fine dining level of service, the service we received was friendly and attentive. I came back to Hog Island Oyster CO for happy hour with friend, and shared two dozen oysters and the shishito peppers between the two of us. We were seated at the end of the bar, behind the heavy curtain that usually surrounds the space when it's closed, but still had plenty of space. The happy hour oysters were the highwaters, which were a brinier oyster, and as it was last time they were cleanly shucked and delicious. The shishitos were perfectly blistered, and we especially liked the aioli that it comes with, though be warned a good amount of these were surprisingly very spicy! There was a small mixup with our bill and another parties, and I ended up getting confused and writing the wrong total due to the conflicting numbers on the receipts, but the staff worked out the correct amounts to fix it quickly, which is greatly appreciated.
