Had my 30th birthday party there because I love all things tiki, and with a classy twist. Pacific Seas delivered in decorum. Completely immersive, there is no nook or cranny that does not display an amazing historical artifact, a hand-carved sculpture, or a piece of beauty as simple as a flower. The entrance room sets the bar with a painted map that will make any Instagram, tweet, or Facebook post glamorous without the filter. My guests were in awe of their surroundings, and so was I. They placed my group at the "pirate table" which also is its own intimate alcove in the bar, giving my guests a more private corner to enjoy. My only critique comes from their inability to handle high-volume. I had about 25 guests, and it took a while for our first round of cocktails to be handed out. The Painkiller was the crowd favorite of the night, while the Mai Tai was good, but not great. I wished they would have offered my large group a tiki punch bowl that we could have enjoyed while we waited for individual cocktails because I know a lot of crafted TLC goes into a good tiki drink. I do not expect such drinks to be made in a couple of seconds, in fact, if a tiki cocktail came so quickly I would question the quality and taste. I want Pacific Seas to succeed. They have all the mystic, wondrous feelings that make me love tiki culture so much, and why I wanted my new decade in life to be welcomed by such magic. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they will figure out their drink program, and more so how to handle the traffic of a large group ordering numerous drinks at once. Again, Clifton's if you're reading this, I reiterate my suggestion to offer a bowl of some sort that could serve 8-10 guests, place it a beautiful punch bowl and ladle, or clamshell, whatever floats your boat (pun intended)! This place was really more just for the "fun" experience rather than the food. Yes the place is huge and there are many rooms or displays to explore...3 floors if you ask. The decor is awesome. There is also a humongous tree inside the middle of the restaurant. We got to check the hidden lounge/bar area that was still under renovation and it was lovely! Apparently it will be open until 2 AM once it opens. Now the food: it was average cafeteria food that they tweaked a little bit. There are many choices though. The Carvery (meat station) took forever.. I think just because there was such high demand. You enter the restaurant and fall in line for quite a bit to get your food. By the time you finish at the cashier, your food will be cold. Also, people jump from one food station to another so it felt a little bit disorganized. Im sure the place can do better. This has got to be my favorite bar in LA. This place is amazing! It is so spacious and huge with very very nice entertaining decor. There's multiple floors with different theme. I also love that they have an area for live band and swing dance. You definitely feel like you're in a different world. I was sad when they closed Clifton's. It was a cool Kitschy place and a throwback in time during 1930's DTLA. I was so ecstatic when they resurrected it. I loved that the new owner blended new with the old, keeping some of the original decor and ambience while and some newer elements in the back area. The food is inexpensive, but quality is just average. We had dessert a cupcake and mousse cake, each under $4. You really come here for the environment. The LO got a free toy from the treasure chest. Once inside, I was mesmerized by the size of it (5 stories) and the elegance and beauty of the entire building. I probably spent over 1 hour exploring the place (you're allowed to walk around up to the 3rd floor) but didn't get to try the food. I had spoken to an employee for 5-7 minutes about it a few months ago. Today I went there because my schedule finally allowed it. There was a doorman who opened the front door for my friend and I. The place was almost completely empty. We went to the 2nd floor bar area. We waited 15 minutes for the bar tender to talk to us. He was incredibly slow. When he finally asked for our orders he said the 35 cent mixed drink special was only for people who were buying another drink. He told us the doorman should have told us. I said that person didn't talk to us and an employee I quizzed for over 5 minutes a few months ago never mentioned that. The special for the day was an Old Fashioned. This place is amazing! From the moment I walked in the door I felt like I was in a different time. So much attention was paid to the smaller decorative details in this restaurant. Visually, I loved loved loved it. Everything looks very high end! That being said, the food was a bit of a let down. I got the roast beef with stuffing and mac & cheese. It was all barely above room temperature, I wish I could have just microwaved it for 30 seconds. The stuffing was freshly opened from a serving tray and so it was warm... but mushy unrecognizable. I visited Clifton's for the first time since reopening on 12/24/2015 at about 7pm with a group of about 8 people. The reason this place gets two stars is for decor and the friendly people; however, that is pretty much where it ends. i mean the decor is awesome. Different levels, different themes, different rooms and so much to look at. It was great. We also found the staff service to be at or above par. However, honestly, we came to have dinner and eat. We were incredibly underwhelmed by the food. It is cafeteria style. We decided to plan our meal around the carvery line tonight. The folks behind the carvery line were very slow. When we got in line we were 7th in line and the first of us did not get served for 9 minutes. However, the food was honestly just not good! Everything tasted very bland. I had a mix of the roast beef and ham, along with the stuffing and mac & cheese. I tasted the mashed potatoes from someone else. I thought the ham was pretty good; however, nothing else beyond that. Clifton's been a staple of LA for some time so when it reopened I checked it out and I believe it suffers from something that is overtaking a lot of places in LA which is we don't really need to try if we a) get hipsters to frequent it and 2) it already as a reputation. It wasn't terribly expensive so there's that but when you spend as much time as the owners did playing up how great it's going to be and then don't deliver it makes the experience that much more disappointing. I can't imagine I'm the only one that feels that way so without repeat business I can't see Clifton's lasting which is sad considering it's history. So my partner in crime and I went on a Saturday night. Probably not the best time to go but hey we were hungry and wanted to give the new Cliftons a try. The interior has vastly improved and the food selection has modernized. So much for the positives... 1. I came in around 6PM, saw the turkey pot pies (Wow!) and asked if I came back in later would they still be there. I was told YES but not close to the kitchen closing. I got there at 8PM. Long gone. 2. I was a good sport and instead went to the carving station. All carving stations throughout Vegas have at least two different items to serve. Not Clifties. Just turkey. Worse -- 3. -- it was turkey product. These sleazeballs put a big real turkey out front but from secret places pull out a loaf of turkey meat product which they slice and serve. The pieces are impossibly uniform -- the big tip off. Don't worry -- it seems to be actual turkey but it is absolutely not cooked on premises. What a scam. Then -- 4. -- they allow you a 'turkey meal' but get tight on sides. Only two sides but four available. Tsk tsk. A little of each please -- essentially since you're not serving home made turkey. Sigh. Were it not for the gravy I would rejected the meal and asked for a refund. It was that lame. I've had the same but better at Cocos. Yes -- Cocos. 5. My partner in crime got in long slow moving line for Quinoa Cakes. Sensing this place was not managed properly I asked ahead to the cooks if they at least still had these cakes. (This was the line that ran out of the pot pies.) Sure, they said. Twenty minutes later they refused to serve it to her because they didn't have a clean pan. (Clean from meat.) I wasn't standing there when she was told this. If I had been I would have asked to see the dirty pan and cracked him on the head with it. 6. Partner in crime settles for a salad. They had next to nothing to put in it despite being a 'whatever you like' salad bar. Pathetic. 7. We sat on the main floor. It was so quiet you could have heard a nuclear bomb drop. 8. Think of this establishment as the most awesome cafeteria run by a frat house ever. If that sounds like a good idea to you -- you deserve this jokeateria. 9. The person working there hands them a pre-wrapped sandwich. They just kind of look at each other and I know what they are thinking, so much for the "handmade ..." Since the girls are devout shoppers, I am able to salvage the night because they are looking at the desserts and some old fashion candy. We walk up a flight and sit down at a big round table with our group. Everyone seemed to be happy with their food but no one is blown away. Still the atmosphere and the music add to the night. I still say that the turkey [even though it was mostly dark meat] was delicious. I ordered the mac n cheese and stuffing sides and they were pretty good too. Not like mom's but pretty good. We order drinks and the wife and I get our usual Vodka Tonics although we get Vodka soda. I am used to it but the wife is clearly not happy. For the second drink, we order a Vodka cranberry. The drinks are pretty strong so "EVERYONE" [you guys know who i mean] are happy and enjoying the odd person doing a dance in the middle of the floor. This is part of tonight's show. The girl serving our drinks was very nice and helpful but at one point, I don't know if we are supposed to bust our own table. We have been done for more than 20 minutes and the plates are all on the table still. This place was super fun! My friends and I got there after 9pm. Second floor had the DJ. The super big tree trunk with fire place was very cool. Lots of taxidermy animals around. Third floor had a jazz band playing. Fourth floor is the tiki bar. We stayed and listened to the band play as well, and all of a sudden there was Hawaiian dance performance! It was very cool! When we headed back to 2nd floor, the dancers came down and did another performance! People got rowdy as the time went by (more alcohol of course). But over all i had a lot of fun there. Clifton's Republic is the bar equivalent of that hot, talented, funny, perfectly well rounded guy that Taylor Swift always sings about. When you walk around you won't know if it is the 1920s or 2018, but you'll be okay with it. It's the perfect clash of old and new - you can go dance like college freshman at a frat party near the giant fake tree or you can get classy with some swing dancing just a room over. Even if you have no swing dancing experience and look like an idiot, some guy will probably ask you to dance anyways and you'll have a lot of fun even though he keeps spinning himself around instead of you (talking from experience). The tiki bar feels like a Tommy Bahama commercial and the downstairs lobby has actually good healthy snacks. 10/10 recommend read more

When I go to downtown LA Clifton's is always a must stop. The drinks and atmosphere is always wonderful.

My expectations coming in here were quite low. Having read the reviews, I expected the food and service of this place to be closer to a higher school cafeteria than a revival of a dining institution. Now, I can with good conscience state that the food was good here, but for what they are serving, it wasn't as bad as I thought. My suggestion and/or recommendation is to stick with the tried and true. Don't come here for sushi, but the carvers wasn't totally hideous. In fact, my meal while not entirely healthy or wanted wasn't bad. The turkey was juicy. The dressings were seasoned although with a heavy hand and the gravy was tasty albeit a little heavy. The dessert however was a complete miss. The cupcake was overly dry and not edible. Essentially what they did here was freshened up the aged feel of this place while adding a few sides to make it feel like they changed the menu. The kombucha was a nice touch. The atmosphere is still kitschy retro. The service unfortunately was very uneven. Overall, this is still a tourist attraction. I visited Clifton's twice in February and I had two great experiences. First visit was on Mardi Gras. They were not busy that day and had an event with live music and a burlesque dancer that evening. Second time, was the following weekend. It was WAY busier that day and I believe it was a Sunday. They made us wait like 15-20 minutes in line to get into the cafeteria but once inside you could get out fairly quickly. The pizza was good, pretty standard stuff. The mac and cheese is super tasty. I really liked that veggie salad, with the purple onions and cucumbers with some sort of Italian dressing. That was literally my favorite thing. The steak was also good, but too bloody for my taste. The people working here are polite and good people. Then again, I'm the kind of person who strikes up conversations with bussers and other employees. I was speaking with a busser and he began to tell me all about the remodel and the Mardi Gras event that night. That's why I ended up going back for some drinks. The band could have been better but the dancer was great, It seems like a great place to entertain. They have multiple floors with a gigantic tree going up the entire building. The tree is fake (duh) and has been reinforced to support acrobats and such. So rad!! While you're there, make a trip to the rest rooms downstairs. If you're in LA you should definitely go. My mother and I used to frequent Clifton's when shopping downtown in the 70s. As an immigrant from Hong Kong, she was rather selective with which non-Chinese restaurants she would try back then. She always felt a warm welcome at Clifton's, and we frequented the LA spot often. I remember how much I loved coming here, since my mom would let me pick out any jello dessert I wanted. Kids will never forget places where they get to pick out their own desserts. Four decades later, my tastes have changed, and definitely for the better. I had heard about the hype over Clifton's hip bar scene, and the excitement surrounding Pacific Seas, the latest Tiki bar; however, I was interested in the food, since that's all I remember from back then. So here I was this past Sunday for Christmas Eve lunch / brunch with my parents. My father ordered the kale salad with a dressing recommended by the chef, along with a slice of deep dish pizza on the side. My mother opted for the brussel sprouts with bacon and mashed potatoes (1/2 garlic mash and 1/2 regular, both with gravy), while I was "all over" the mini side salads. I grabbed one of each: egg, curry, chicken, tuna, quinoa, and pasta. As a person who does a lot of entertaining and party planning, I totally appreciate the egg salad served in a plastic egg, the tuna salad served in a mini tuna can with an orchid garnish, and the quinoa salad served in a can. At four for $6, and each additional for $1.75, they're a steal. My mother and I also shared a serving of prime rib to round out the meal. Everything we selected was great. The prime rib rivaled Lawry's, both in cut and wellness. The carver was generous with the au jus and horseradish, and it couldn't have been better! Each little salad was great (not mind-blowing, but definitely fresh and tasty). I also had to try a little of my parent's meals, too, just 'cause I'm THAT type that likes to try EVERYTHING. Dad's salad was fabulous! Tossed fresh to order. Mom's brussels could have been crispier, but the big chunks of bacon made up for it. Mashed potatoes were great, with a healthy serving of gravy all over. The wait staff and servers were incredibly accommodating. Everyone was beyond nice, like they had all been through Nordstrom's customer service training. The restaurant was immaculately clean, and the atmosphere was lovely. I couldn't help but comment to my parents about how I felt like I was eating lunch in Fantasyland at Disneyland, because of all the trees, "woodsy" architecture, and festive decor. Coincidentally, the next day, ABC7 featured a news piece about Walt Disney's favorite spots in LA. Clifton's was mentioned in the article, since one of Walt Disney's favorite meals used to be Clifton's Salisbury steak and red jello. I read that Walt himself was so inspired by the tree decor and characters adorning the restaurant when he ate here, that he recreated them for certain Disneyland attractions. So basically, it wasn't Disneyland that inspired Clifton's; rather, Clifton's inspired Disneyland! As a dedicated Disneyland patron, I was amazed. So the bottom line? Being a foodie, I'd give Clifton's a 4 to 4.5 stars on food. Food is classic and good, but don't expect anything with truffles, caviar, or foie gras. The service is probably some of the best I've had, and the historic significance and ambiance bring it to a 5 quite easily. It's also a really cool place to bring kids. Although I don't eat jello anymore, I picked out one for old time's sake. The red and green stained glass jello with whipped cream is a winner! Everyone should give Clifton's a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

I love this spot. The drinks are great and inexpensive. What makes Clifton's so special is the multiple levels of roomy seating. Whether you want more privacy at the higher floors or you want to be on the main floor with the crowd and the bar, it's completely up to you. We went at a later time so the kitchen was closed but the overall ambiance is great. The seats are big and there's plenty of couches for more comfortable seats. There's a paid parking structure across the street(I believe around $7) Will definitely return!! read more

I went here with my friend on their opening night. It was pretty crowded that day. The lines were pretty disorganized and they ran out of a lot of items (hopefully they are more prepared now). I ended up getting their roast beef (did not have choice). Check out took awhile because the cashier could not figure out where some items were on their POS system (I hope they are better trained now compared to their opening night). I thought the food was okay. I wish I got a bigger piece of meat, but since they were running low on items, they cut small pieces for everyone. Food was okay. I thought the place was beautiful though. They have done a great job with restorations. Will I be back? Probably. I will give this place another chance even though I am a little worried since everyone (chef, beverage director, etc) seems to be leaving Clifton's Cafeteria. read more

I wanted so badly to like Clifton's given it's amazing story, longevity, and investment made by its new owner. Unfortunately the food is really pretty average and the service - as other Yelpers have written - is really lacking. Very limited entree options. The owners need to copy the training that Chik-fil-a puts their employees through. They should read Truett Cathy's autobiography too! I had baked ham with Mashed potatoes and Mac n Cheese. It was fine, but very average. I had hoped for better, what can I say. Cool decor - it is a fun, tourist destination. If you are in the neighborhood, go in there for a bottle of water or dessert.
