Men, let's be honest, one of the initial challenges in the first quarter is pretending you know anything about wine. You know red versus white and that's pretty much it. That's okay! The selections here are limited enough to not be overwhelming but diverse enough that you can pretend you have a preference / know the difference between Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. Reasonable prices, brief beer list, and quick service give this place a solid alcohol selection. The menu is fairly straightforward, with some interesting Italian meats and cheeses you may have to google while your date is in the bathroom - sopressata sounds more like a harry potter spell than a pizza topping imo - but there is enough variety to allow for some safe experimentation. My date and I shared a jalapeno/pineapple margherita, which came in with a decent presentation (I'm always a sucker for coffee can pizza pan holders) and the thin crust had a buttery, crispy texture with a light herbal aftertaste. Not the pizza I would get when I'm craving flavor and/or gluttony (see: Pequods), but a good meal for a date that allows room for dessert or drinks after. Overall, Coalfire is a safe spot for a first or second date. Fairly MBE - Medium Buck Energy - but it will get the job done for a young stag who just needs a casual pasture to flash his antlers and make a good impression. Beyond that, you probably want to try some of the more unique pizza spots in the city, or explore one of the gradually reopening rooftop bars. If you're into very traditional, "American" style pizza and not one to venture out of your food comfort zone I would not recommend coming here. I say this because if you're at Coalfire, you absolutely must get one of their signature pizzas (I recommend the Pistachio Pesto). I love how thin the crust is and the hint of charred flavor that comes with it. You can always tell how fresh the ingredients and toppings are. I will say that I enjoy the ambience of the Lakeview location best as it's bigger and brighter, but West Town gets a pass, being that it's the original. I remember my first time coming to Coalfire was part of one of the Chicago pizza tours. It was our last stop after visiting Pizano's , Pequod's and Flo & Santos. The crust was thin, I felt it could have been more crisp. I think when I reheat it in a pan, I will achieve what I was looking for in the pizza. My wife had a glass of wine, she enjoyed. Service was top notch, we were seated right away, and the food came in a reasonable amount of time. A bit on the pricey side, but I expected no less. Coalfire was our last stop while on the Chicago Pizza Tour, and it was one of my favorites! Foodies will love this place. There's a huge difference between coal-fired pizza and your typical oven baked pizza. Coalfired gives thin crust a crispy, crunchy, airy crust handle, with bits of char on each bite. The char gives the pizza an extra layer of flavor that other pizza doesn't have. I'm sort of in love with the dollops of ricotta cheese that is squeezed onto each slice. I spread that dollop over my entire slice so I get a taste of it in each bite. The crust is super thin, and so you don't feel like you're eating a ton. It helps if you fold the slice in half (like NY pizza) so that it doesn't flop over and you lose all of your ricotta! We had the white pizza and the pepperoni. Both were equally delicious. I prefer the white. Garlic, cheese, olive oil and fresh basil pair so well together - no red sauce is needed. I was stuffed to the gills, but wanted so badly to cram more slices into my mouth! I so wish they were located in the suburbs so that I could eat more of this heavenly grub. Check them out if you want quality! read more

This is one of the best pizza places I have been too! We dined in (well, outside, it is COVID times and all) and even though it was pretty brisk out, we had a great time. The tent could have been a little warmer, but not going to knock them on that when the food was soooo good. We got a half and half pizza, which you can do if the base sauces are the same, so we did the margherita and ricotta and pepperoni, which were both absolutely amazing. We also got one of the meatball dip sandwiches and oh my gosh it was so good. The dip on the side keeps it from getting soggy and the giardinaira (?) was so yummy and not too spicy. The food was all piping hot and so amazing. I love exploring new spots, so I try not to go back to places, but this one is going to have to be a favorite that we keep going back too. 10 out of 10 would recommend!! read more

On this particular Thursday night, the restaurant was pretty empty and the service was super quick. Lucky us! We ordered right away and had our pizza and beers within minutes. It was difficult to choose one, but for two of us we shared the Sausage and Stracciatella pizza. This was delicious and had a nice spicy kick to it. Stracciatella is a kind of white cheese, which we didn't know prior to ordering. We had leftovers, so one pizza is definitely a more than good enough portion for two. Honestly there are not enough stomachs err.. words to express how greatly I love Coalfire. I was taken here by my brother who lives in Chicago after we told him we were interested in thin crust this visit. Our first visit we came here after watching a Wisconsin basketball game at the bar, so I don't think I was able to fully appreciate the greatness of this pizza. But my husband and I returned the next visit and truly took it all in. We were worried about it being busy for a Friday, as we know the location isn't huge but our worries were unfounded as we walked in and were seated as soon as they wiped the table off. Our server was pint sized and fun. A true joy to be around, she kept our drinks refilled and made sure to check in and give us updates. We got two pizzas, one was Sausage Vodka (our server recommended it for us) and the Margherita and both were EVERYTHING to me. I can now die happy. I was one of those people mm'ing and sighing with every bite. In hindsight, maybe annoying for our table neighbors as you are tightly packed in there. My only regret is my stomach not being able to hold more. Between the two of us, we left two pieces on the table and we showed up ready to eat. But seriously. I would come back here again and again. This was more of a 4.2 or so, but I'll do 4 stars since they were charging a corkage for byob. This was the only place in Chicago that I visited that charged a corkage charge. On to the pizza, it was big and tasty and the whipped ricotta was a nice new twist that I have not had before. Granted it looks a little strange, but it is yum. The cesar salad was also tasty, but a little steep in my opinion. I was on vacation and on a quest to try some highly rated pizza places, so I didn't concern myself too much with the details. I am mainly writing this review because I am missing this legendary pizza; they stopped delivering to my area in Logan Square. Fuck!!! After being so unexpectedly broken up with, I had no choice to online stalk them and see who else they are dating... Anyway, this is probably the best Neopolitan style pizza in Chicago at the moment and the best pizza I've had outside Italy. Sauce? Amazing. Cheese? Gooey. Crust? Perfection. Ingredients? Always freshly prepared. I recommend adding bacon to any option, they use Neuske's, which is simply the best, in huge, crisp, flavorful lardons. The sausage is also great, they use Berkshire's, which is again, the top choice. You can't really go wrong with the toppings, since every ingredient is fresh & upscale and the pizza is always oozy, hot and amazing. The price may seem a bit high but part of that is if you use delivery, Caviar has outrageous pricing (the only delivery vendor they use currently). I miss you, Coalfire. Best pizza I've had in Chicago. Most are very over rated and don't ever end up even being decent. This was my first time being here. The service was great, and the pizza was top notch. This is a thinner style coal fired pizza that is PERFECTLY cooked and packs a ton of flavor. I took the jalapeño pepperoni pizza and swapped out the pepperoni for sausage. I also love giardinerra and got a side of that as they make it from scratch. May very well be the best I've had as well, and I ended up buying a 1/2 pint from them. I somewhat enjoyed the pepperoni, cheese, and ricotta pizza despite the fact that the edge of the crust was a bit on the burned side. As I ordered delivery they put the ricotta on the side to scoop on yourself so the flavors did not really blend as I imagined they would when cooked together. The only problem is pick minimal toppings as the middle starts to get too thin and soggy, or maybe it just needed to be cooked longer. My husband and I had been wanting to try out this neighborhood pizza spot and I'm glad we finally did! We split whatever the house special was, some kind of pepperoni pizza and we ate the entire thing! It was so good and crunchy and the flavors were on point. I was a little bothered by the fact that for the wine glass I ordered, when the server brought it over he told me it took so long because the cork fell in the bottle and they had to get the cork out of the glass. My only complaint is that there was a bunch of oil on the table under the condiments. blech. I wish they had apps on their menu (I only saw salad, which IMO just doesn't qualify). We went straight for the pizza: the White, which was my favorite in NYC. It was pretty good: I loved the fresh basil leaves. There were HUGE dollops of ricotta.. maybe too huge? You really have to eat the white while it's piping hot, or else the taste and texture are kind of "meh." I don't think we'd get the White again in the future, but am glad we tried it anyway. When notified about the poor service and excessive wait time, no attempt was made to try and make up for the poor dining experience. Multiple tables came and went during over the course our meal. Toward the end of the meal, the excessive wait continued as a handful of neighboring tables were attended to as we were waiting to close out and continue our night.
