Coal Fire on Grand is a must. The pepperoni and whipped ricotta pizza is honestly one of the best in Chicago -- the ricotta adds the perfect creamy balance to the crispy, slightly charred crust and flavorful pepperoni. The vibe here is great too, lively but still comfortable. Pizzas come out fast and the service is consistently good. Always a solid choice.
Solid pizza shop! We were over by Buckingham fountain so we stopped by for a late lunch. We shared 2 apps: Foccacia with garlic butter and then another with burrata and kale. Soo good. Fabulous bread. It looks large but it's light and kind of airy. The butter was amazing! Somewhat of a whipped quality with fresh seasoning in it. And we shared 3 pizzas: stracciatella and sausage, nduja, and honey and salami. Everything was good. Ingredients are fresh. Really nice slightly charred flavor on the crust. They're thin slices but you can get full fast! Among 5 of us, we still had leftovers. It wasn't busy when we came in, but shortly after, it seemed folks from a pizza tour stopped in for a bit to try some slices. You do see the oven at the back. Nice touch. You can watch them cook the pizza. Parking around here is parallel. It seemed bumper to bumper but my cousin got a spot just a few steps away from the entrance.
Stopped in on a Sunday right at open since there was about 10 of us. We were seated right away and our server was fantastic! She was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. I had the pepperoni jalapeño, which was delicious. The crusts were crispy, pizza thin and not oily. It was perfect! I also tried the meatball pizza, which was very flavorful and the bacon jam, which was absolutely amazing. Cannot wait to go back and have that again. The caprese salad was delicious as well, but the tomato's could've been more fresh. Overall, the experience was great but the pricing is a little high, especially for the apps. The server was also nice enough to let us go behind the counter and check out the oven. I'll definitely be back to try some of the other pizzas.
This was the perfect spot for comfort food and an extended catchup with a friend. Very casual vibe, lighting is dim. Upon the server's recommendation we ordered the funghi as well as the stracciatella & sausage pizzas. They came out quickly and were full of flavor (read: garlic). I would have taken off one star because the price to size ratio seemed a little high (we were able to each finish one ourselves, though we were hungry). That said, the server was attentive and let us sit for a long time after eating, so for that I give kudos!
Food: Caesar and house salad. Vegan pizza (vegan pesto with all vegan toppings) & jalapeno pepperoni #2. Both salads were amazing - the Caesar was one of the best I've had. the pizza was delicious as well - Nice thin crust with great flavor sauce & toppings. Our waitress, Doreena, was super helpful in sharing the vegan options that were off menu. She was patient and made sure the kitchen knew the vegan request for our ask. The restaurant was a classic pizza spot setup and had low lighting and chill vibes. Would recommend for a quick, good meal if you're walking by!
If you're a fan of ultra-thin crust, Coalfire nails that crispiness--light and not greasy at all, which I appreciated. That said, the bottom was a little too charred for my taste. A touch more sauce would really round out the flavor without losing that signature crunch. Sodas were overly sweet--would love to see hot tea or a less sugary option on the menu to help cut through the richness of the pizza. Service was friendly and attentive, which made the visit enjoyable overall.
Yum! Meeting with friends in the area and discovered this adorable pizza place that serves thin crust pizza on empty tomato sauce tins. Unique variety of toppings like meatballs, beef pepperoni, ricotta and others. We had three pizzas for the five of us, just the right amount. Service was great and ambiance was perfect, not loud for a Thursday night.
Pizza was a 3.75/5 would visit again. The style is a Neapolitan and New Haven hybrid. Crispy crunch crust edge with the slice having some flop. Had the jalepeno pepperoni which had berkshire pork pepperoni, house pickled jalapeño, mozzarella, garlic cream, stracciatella, and chives. Would return very good pizza
In town for the weekend and found this lovely gem so we decided to stop in - we were not disappointed! Service was fast and friendly! We did have a hard time deciding which pizza to get as they all sounded fantastic, but decided on the Bacon Jam pizza. It was excellent! Place is small but inviting and we would definitely come back again!

I've been waiting and waiting to try Coalfire. It was worth the wait!!! In the thin crust...flavor packed...crunchy...and just plain good pizza category....this is IT!! The coal fire oven really makes the crust stand out. The place is intimate and serves up the food quickly. The menu's focal point....JUST PIZZA! I wanna try some of the other combo pizzas. Love it love it love it!!! This is not a deep dish pizza place. We got stracciatella & sausage and it was freaking delicious. What made everything even more pleasant was our waitress. She was so sweet, nice, funny, went above and beyond. Anyway, back to the pizza - thin crust, juicy, flavorful, delicious. Just divine. My husband and I shared one pie but a pie and half would've been a better size for us. 10 Gryffindor points out of 10!!! read more

Finally got to visit this pizza joint after having it on our list of must visit places! First, I just wanna say the service is amazing. My husband and I walked long ways to get here and so we were so thirsty. Knowing this, our server constantly filled our water. She also fast and efficient with getting our order and our food. Now the pizza was AMAZING. We got a simple half cheese half sausage pizza. It was a very thin pizza and didn't feel heavy at all. The sauce had good flavor and wasn't overbearing and the cheese was fresh. The sausage was also very flavorful. Because it was a coal fire cooked pizza, it had nice burned parts and that was so good, kind of like the burnt part of a fire roasted marshmallow. Overall, Coalfire exceeded my expectations and I highly highly recommend this place, especially if you're a fan of pizza! read more

This was our first time getting pizza from Coalfire...and we LOVEDDD IT!!!!! We got half of pepperoni and whipped ricotta and other half with lasagna....both were amazinggg...the crust was soo good and flavorful as well..we got the whipped ricotta on the side..it went so well with the pizza! FIRE ME UP This place is the best! The pizza here is on fire. The coal fired oven creates such an amazing crust on the pizza. When you arrive at the restaurant all you will smell is wonderful pizza baking. My nose wants to move in here for all of the free smells. This place is so consistent. The food is hot and perfect every time. Their carry out game is on point. When I put my order in over the phone, they will tell me 15 minutes and they aren't lying. I always set a timer and they have never been late. I'm walking in the door at 14 minutes and I can see them pulling my pizza from the hot coal fired oven. It's so fast. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of the pizza's here. Our favorite pizza that we always order is the pepperoni with fresh house made whipped ricotta. We just love this pizza. It's so tasty and fresh every single time. It's our go to pizza but honestly you can't go wrong with any of their selections. So if you're looking for a pizza that's fired to perfection then look no further. The owners and staff at Coalfire are super nice and will treat you like family. Coalfire Pizza has become one of our go-to dinners in the city of Chicago. When it comes to woodfire thin crust pizza with delicious sauces and fabulous toppings, you can't beat Coalfire. The staff are always friendly and attentive at Coalfire, providing a wonderful customer experience! The pizzas are to die for! The best thin crust in the city! Are go to pizzas are the ricotta cheese and pepperoni pizza and the stracciatella and sausage pizza! We have actually gotten into a bit of a rut because these pizzas are so scrumptious and satisfying! They also have a very nice selection of beer, wine, and cocktails! Everyone KNEADS to know about this Coalfire's fantastic pizza! I went with a group of adventurous eaters and I loved trying things that were out of my comfort zone. I absolutely did not regret it. Jalapeno pepperoni #2: 4.5/5 - similar to an ordinary pepperoni pizza but spicier! The whipped ricotta is a great addition to the top, which balances out spiciness Pistachio pesto: 5/5 - WOW. I have never thought to add honey to a pizza and this perfect mixture of savory, salty and sweet. The pistachio pesto is also not as overwhelming as a regular pesto can be. You can get honey on the side so you can control how sweet you want it to be. Njuda: 5/5 - don't let the name scare you off! It's the last item on the menu but in my opinion is a must try. Njuda is a spreadable type of spicy pork and is placed on the pizza in small dollops. It added such a rich flavor to the pizza without being too much I would HIGHLY recommend the pistachio pesto and njuda! Both provided unique flavors that I have never tried anywhere else! read more

Chicago has a wide array of pizza selections and it's not always about the deep dish. One of my favorites is the local Coalfire Pizza who serves thin crust pizza with crispiness and a slight airiness in its crust. We have tried several flavors: 1) Pistachio pesto - pistachio pesto, mozzarella, berkshire sausage, stracciatella, honey. Honey on pizza was not weird at all and I liked how this arrived last because the sweetness made it a borderline dessert pizza. This is now one of my favorites. 2) Vodka meatball - mozzarella, vodka sauce, meatball, basil, stracciatella, pecorino romano 3) Lasagna - mozzarella, sauce, berkshire sausage, sweet red pepper, whipped ricotta, basil, garlic. The whipped ricotta was excellent! 4) Bacon jam - sauce, mozzarella, sopressata, bacon jam, stracciatella, chives 5) Heirloom tomatoes - This was the special of the evening because tomatoes were in season. Came here for the first time on our visit to Chicago. Let me start off by saying that if you're looking for pizza that is NOT deep dish then this is the spot!! The oven brick thin-crust pizza here is delicious and the crust taste speaks for itself. We ordered the Pepperoni with Whipped Ricotta and Jalapeños (picture shown) and it was absolutely tasty. 5/5 Will come back again if I'm in the area! Price for 2: around $30 read more

The pizza is SO good. We got the pistachio pesto, lasagna, and the white pizza as delivery. The pistachio pesto was all our favorite of the 3. My second favorite was the white pizza, and then I probably wouldn't get the lasagna pizza again. We didn't notice that they gave us ricotta on the side until we had finished eating the pizza. That would have probably made the lasagna and white pizza taste better. We got 3 pizzas for 4 people and that was the perfect amount. I would definitely order again! They did take over 2 hours to deliver our pizza, so beware if you want it to come immediately. read more

5 stars on everything but the crust/ value. We got a pizza margharita with broccolini and it was fantastic, first rate pizza like you'd get in Italy or italian Switzerland. Blazing fast and great staff! Crust of actual pie was sweet, super thin, and yet firm. So good. The basil had some stems i removed but otherwise delicious and the broccolini we added was wonderful! We've never come by here before but i was looking forward to the crust, and wow it was mostly like eating charcoal. I had to tear it off to enjoy the rest. Weird thing is i'm into good crusts and i dunno if we got a burnt pie or if thats their product. At 20+ for a 14" i'm hesitant to buy in again. Such a great group and such a minor near miss for others, so if u don't care about carbon crusts you'll love it. We really did! read more

We ordered 2 pizzas from Coalfire last week, and I thought this was a solid 4.5/5 experience. Pizzas: - Stracciatella & sausage: 4.5/5 - Bacon jam: 4/5 The pizzas overall were a breath of fresh air from deep dish (I'm a Chicagoan who doesn't like deep dish, please don't hate me). They were, however, almost a bit too thin (or just soggy?) where you can't pick up the slice, fold it in half, and put it in your mouth without the end of the pizza dropping down and all the toppings falling off. Obviously the two hand assist isn't the end of the world, it just would be nicer to be able to have all your toppings stay on the za without so much effort. Anyway, both pizzas we got were tasty, but the stracciatella & sausage pizza was fantastic. I honestly could've eaten that whole pizza by myself in one sitting if you let me. Service: - Ordering: 4.5/5 - Delivery: 5/5 I ordered by phone, and the lady on the phone was very nice. The only reason I'm docking half a star is because I asked for no onions on the stracciatella pizza, and she repeated it back to me multiple times, and the za still arrived with onions. Could've been a mix up in the kitchen and not her fault at all, but I just really didn't want onions on my za, and they weren't the easiest onions to pick off either. Delivery was super timely, and the delivery driver had set the receipt and pen on the bench 6ft away from him for me to sign, which was very nice, but then I wasn't sure if I was supposed to attach the pen to the receipt and throw it back at him after I'd signed or walk it up to him? I felt weird throwing it so I handed it to him, but then I felt weird getting that close to him too. Idk this is a weird time y'all. read more

Best tasting pizza! My husband and I just had brunch 2 hours before coming here. My husband wanted pizza one last time before heading out to the airport. I wasn't going to eat because I'm super full but I am so glad because it's the best pizza I've had. He likes John's pizza better in NYC but I completely disagree. We are coming back in 4 weeks. NYC first then Chicago. We are going to ask our children to do a test taste. We shall see who will reign the best pizza. read more

We ordered a pizza for delivery and they initially left it at the wrong address. The delivery driver just gave us an "oh well" response when I reached out to him. Luckily after I called the restaurant they offered to send a new pizza, but when we got it it was very greasy. The grease had soaked through the box and the pizza was just a soggy mess. The crust looked cooked, but underneath was very doughy. Needed to be cooked way longer. Very disappointed. read more

Coal fire is one of the most slept on pizza places! They are my go to for any coal fire pizza and always taste great. They also do delivery in reasonable time. The pizzas are only one size, and the average person can eat anywhere from 3/4 to a whole pizza if they are hungry. I highly recommend the vodka meatball pizza if you are only going to get one type of pizza. If you want a bit of variety, get the pesto one or honey/ham. read more

I went on a Thursday and they had very good deals for happy hour. They had a live music performance (he performs every thursday) and he was fabulous. He played very laid back music on his guitar. I got the Burrata appetizer. It was good, but could use some more sweet flavors to balance the savory flavors of the broccolini and lemon. For the dinner I got the 14" Lasagna pizza (a part of their happy hour- $14 compared to the usual $20). I HIGHLY recommend this pizza is was delicious. The ricotta is to die for. Coalfire is a hidden treasure that deserves your attention. The pizza is wonderful with just the right amount of char on the bottom. The servers are both beautiful and attentive. Rare these days. You must try their meatballs in a pork sauce that you'll want to dip your bread into until the bread is gone then order more bread to get every delicious bit of the sauce. WHEN I get back there and I will it will be my first and last stop. read more

Solid pizza but overrated (I am admittedly a tough critic when it comes to pizza) but I recommend giving this place a try. Dining in - the pizza is solid, for carryout it gets cold and soggy fast. The best pizza is pistaccio pesto, the meatballs are good as well. Major downside is no alcohol served and no bar. read more
