We visited Coastal Flats (Gaithersburg)for a "Mommy & Me" birthday lunch. Even with a reservation, we waited about 30 minutes to be seated. My mother has diabetes, so the delay and the very sweet dessert weren't ideal. Her Filet Mignon looked incomplete -- just a small piece of steak with mushrooms (see photo). They later brought fries, but by then the moment was gone. The food itself was fine, but the service lacked warmth. It wasn't overpriced, but it felt under delivered. After being seated, it took forever for bread to be brought over to the table. The waiter didn't check on our table with any degree of regularity as we waited on bread to arrive while we decided on an order. The manager came over, took our order and placed it. The order was very late being completed and everything was much better after the manager got involved. This must have been an "Off-Night" for the staff and the kitchen. I got jambalaya pasta which had great components, but I prefer jambalaya without the pasta, since the dish is rich and heavy. The smoked salmon filet is not to be missed. The outside is seared while the interior is moist. The hickory smoking is intense and delicious. It comes with a Creole mustard sauce for a nice twist. One of us had the hanger steak, liking the flavor but finding it chewy. We also had the goat cheese and spiced pecan salad. Another success. Desert was a key lime pie that gives a tart not too sweet finish. Service was attentive. The restaurant features a festive decor. They are a solid dinner option. read more

I had a very good experience at Coastal Flats. I passed by this restaurant so many times on my way to dine at the Rio and I'm glad I finally stopped in to give them a try. I love that virtually all of the seating inside is full booth seating. I appreciate this because booth seating is so beneficial to large families with kids. Without a doubt this restaurant is family-friendly in setting and menu. The inside is large and I can't image there can ever be a waiting line to sit down because of this. The kid's $6 cheeseburger and fries meal gives chain fast food restaurant a run for their money considering it is as large if not larger than premium fast food burgers and has the traditional barbecue charred flavor. This will be my go-to in the area for burgers over fast food any day. The following menu items I tried were absolutely delicious: - Blue Crab & Shrimp Fritters - Lobster Bisque - Community Bread Basket - Ozzie Rolls - Tex Mex Eggrolls - Bacon Cheeseburger - Kid's Cheeseburger - Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Sandwich - Sweet Tea (slightly on the too sweet side) - Key Lime Pie To be honest I was a bit skeptical about some of the menu items however the waiter made some really good recommendations and I'm glad he did. Thursday 2/29/2024 On previous visits I never found the food to be all that impressive or good to me besides the Ozzie rolls & the delicious white chocolate bread pudding. The service on every visit has been top tier and amazing. I got 2 free desserts for my birthday on last years and on this visit they forgot my moms salad order but made up for it by making it complimentary. On this visit, I got the Ozzie rolls ($1 per serving), low country bbq beef ribs ($32), jambalaya pasta ($26), and of course the amazing white chocolate bread pudding ($8). The white chocolate bread pudding is still great. The Ozzie rolls are pretty good but I wish they would bring more servings faster. Although a bit pricey, The jambalaya pasta was good and my mom LOVED it. The bbq beef ribs were decent but overpriced for me. Also the shoe strings fries SUCK, easily the worst type of fries in the game. After 3 different visits I kinda still feel the same about coastal flats: incredible service, great bread pudding, good Ozzie rolls, and decent but overpriced food like the jambalaya pasta and low country bbq beef rib. read more

We stopped in here for lunch while walking around town and was honestly impressed! The food was simple but delicious! Though not pictured, i had the cajun pasta with chicken. The chicken in the dosh was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy! And the sauce and flavor also spot on. The drinks here are great and so is the service! My husband and I stopped in and tried Coastal Flats on a whim! This cute place is decorated with fun ocean art all over the place! The kitchen is open and you get a full view of it from your seat. From our view it looked extremely clean and well running! Which was pleasant to see. Also, shoutout to their bathrooms for being so pretty and clean! We were sat immediately and the staff were very pleasant and efficient! Our waitress checked on us frequently and had a great attitude! We started with the calamari, which was fantastic! The fry was perfect and there was a sweet and spicy sauce drizzled on top that was great! We both ordered the lobster roll..who wouldn't?! This came with fries & fire roasted corn alongside it. I am a huge shoe string fry fan & these were yummy! The corn was also semi the star of the show!! The lobster roll was stuffed to the brim and of course the lobster was delicious. Not an issue, but more of an our preference was that the lobster roll came with celery and shredded romaine on it. Overall just didn't think that was necessary, the lobster itself is enough for us. I worked a few years in downtown crown so Coastal Flats became a weekly occurrence for years! Since switching jobs I haven't been in a few years but it still feels just as good - The jambalaya pasta was my all time favorite - a solid amount of chicken and the sauce is always creamy. This evening I ordered the chicken on top of angel hair pasta. Also, always a great options if you're looking to meet your protein goal and get some veggies in. As someone who's not a fan of mushrooms I always end up eating the ones on this dish because of the delicious sauce they're dropped in. I will say, the Ozzie balls (the world best bread) used to be free - now there's a charge, very odd. Our waitress was extremely friendly, she checked in on us a few times and was patient with us through ordering. She was very accommodating with splitting the bill as well. Overall, Coastal Flats is just as I remember it - a tasteful dinner option that welcomes all really (families, dates, friends) and the environment remains well kept! I came back to Coastal Flats recently for my nephew's birthday. We did not have reservations, but were still seated immediately when we arrived.... it all went downhill from there. We had four adults, one child and a toddler who needed a high chair in our party and yet we were all squeezed into a tiny half circle of a table. My son was hungry so I made sure to put his food order in immediately when our server took our drink orders. I was severely disappointed when my child's food order came out with everyone else's food.... almost 15-20 minutes later. We made a point to immediately put in my son's meal order. The food wasn't amazing and it wasn't terrible. I had the Fried Chicken Fingers that comes with fries and coleslaw. Our server barely checked on us and my son was in a terrible mood from the food taking so long. Overall, this is NOT a family friendly restaurant. I do not plan on coming back here and would much rather visit another location where we aren't squeezed into a tiny table and my child can have his food reasonably quickly. read more

What a truly regrettable experience. My in-laws were in town for Mother's Day and so I made a reservation at Coastal Flats for 4:45pm (we have a 9 month old with an early bed time), we got to the restaurant around 4:55pm and were seated fairly quickly. 5:00pm: seated and greeted by our waiter 5:10pm: we place our orders 5:45pm: still waiting for food; we see our waiter speaking with what looked to be a manager 6:00pm: the manager comes around and explains that the kitchen is behind and we should have our food soon. Mind you the tables next to us had been seated 40 minutes after us and they had already gotten their food so I'm skeptical 6:05pm: our waiter comes around and says that they lost our ticket and they had to resubmit our orders (I wish the manager had been upfront about this rather than giving us the generic run-around) 6:35pm: **A Whole 30 Minutes Later** we are told that our food will be out in 10 minutes, despite being told our ticket was placed in priority at the top of the list 6:45pm: Finally after whole 1 hour and 40 minutes after being seated, we finally have our food. I wish I could say our food came out perfect and we enjoyed our meal; however, all of our food was either undercooked or overcooked. If we wanted raw salmon, I would've gone to a sushi restaurant. We ordered steak cooked medium and got it well done. The spinach and artichoke dip tasted like it had been frozen for so long that all the veggies had lost their flavor. We were so over it that we didn't even say anything, we just wanted to leave and get out, because after nearly two hours, our 9 month old was near bedtime and ready to revolt. My biggest issue was that the manager did not seem apologetic at all and offered absolutely no resolution. We ended up being at the restaurant for two and a half hours. The only saving grace was that our server was great and was very sincerely sorry even though it was not his fault. He offered us free dinner rolls and a dessert. We ended up with a bill of over $200 on very undercooked or overcooked, underseasoned food. We ordered jumbo crab cakes, salmon filet, lobster roll, and hanger steak. I had heard mixed reviews about Coastal Flats, but wanted to give it a try, but boy did we regret that. Our second disappointment in a Great American brand restaurant. I still can't believe the manager didn't offer any compensation for making us wait nearly two hours for food, but safe to say we will never be going back. This is a beautiful restaurant, aesthetically. I am a frequent visitor to this location, in an upscale town center with ample free parking. The service from the attendants are always amazing! This week, my servers Lanaya and Teraney were exceptional, always greeting with a smile and very attentive. My favorite selections are: deviled egg appetizer, crab and corn soup, all of the salads, and the salmon entree. The fried codfish fish and chips is tasty, however, can be a little too salty sometimes. The best dessert option is the key lime pie. The bread pudding is much too heavy and thick, not like it is served in popular places like New Orleans, Louisiana or Charleston, S.C., where bread pudding is king. They have a lively happy hour every day at the sportswear area, which can get a little noisy. They have a tasty brunch menu on weekends. Just passing thru town and drove by Coastal Flats, I scored a parking spot very close so it seems like a win win. The patio was open and the tables were set for outside dining. I walked in and was greeted by the hostess. Its a nice day and requested to sit outside. It wasn't too busy so I was seated at a patio table. The drink menu looks fun, I started with a Pineapple Mojito. My drink wasn't too strong, it did have a nice flavor. The Crispy 2 Noodle Shrimp Salad was a hit! Salt and pepper fried shrimp tossed with mixed greens, mango and toasted almonds. The dressing was ginger vinaigrette along with a spicy peanut sauce. Total fan! I stopped here while in the area to watch some of the USA vs France Olympic championship game. There were quite a few other patrons sitting in the bar area and seemed to be there to watch the game as well. The bar waitress was young, funny and really seemed to be on top of things. I only ordered the baby cake sliders and they were pretty good. I liked the nice crunch from the slaw and the creamy sauce on the buttery brioche buns. The shrimp and crab mixture tasted nice. I couldn't decide between the trout or the salmon and she suggested the salmon. Her suggestion was spot on. The salmon was delicious and a good portion for lunch. My sis got the same thing. Had an amazing dinner at Coastal Flats a few weeks ago. Service and food were both outstanding. We tried the coastal lobster roll, jambalaya pasta, and market fish special. Everything was great. The lobster roll was yummy, and they do specialize in seafood. I was hesitant to spend $33 on it, and I do think it's a little overpriced. We also enjoyed the jambalaya pasta. I prefer less creamy, and it wasn't as creamy or heavy as I thought. Our server Lapriya and the other gentleman server completed the experience. Service was excellent. I always go to the one near my home at crowns and a many Times at the Tysons corner location. It is very consistent on the food and service. It is always go to place when I need to have a family get together or just stop in at the bar. It's a little bit pricey for a franchise restaurant. But around here. Wow. I hadn't been here in a few years and I am so glad I went. My friend and I got a reservation at 6:00pm and were seated right away but not long after, there was a wait for tables and it filled up quickly. Our waitress, Faith, was awesome. She recommended the fresh catch of the day which was Hickory Smoked Grilled Mahi Mahi and it sounded so good so we got that and the Pecan Crusted Trout with Mashed Cauliflower and a side of Crispy Brussel Sprouts with Bacon and Spiced Pecans. Everything was absolutely delicious. Very well seasoned and very hot and fresh. I was very impressed with the Mashed Cauliflower because it was so creamy and smooth. We also shared a bottle of white wine and the White Chocolate Bread Pudding which was the perfect ending to the meal. They let me do the ice cream on the side so it didn't melt all over the hot pudding. It was hopping with a lot of patrons with everything from families to couples enjoying a night out. They had a lot of staff so you never had plates sitting on your table waiting to be bussed. Everyone was very nice and it didn't get too loud in the restaurant with the amount of people dining. This is a true family favorite. We love all of the Great American restaurants, but my kids definitely prefer the Gaithersburg Coastal Flats location. We sometimes visit the location in Tysons Corner as well, however, they don't serve chicken tenders as this location does. This restaurant is a great mid scale option for a casual meal out. The service is great, the prices are very reasonable, and the atmosphere is nice. Definitely a nice step up from the large national chain restaurants that we try to avoid. Apparently they meter the people coming in (unless they were trying to discourage us for dining-while-black in a tony neighborhood). Once we ordered, food came quickly as described. Food was very flavorful, although the broccolini was a couple shoots with tough, fibrous stems.
