In honor of National Barbecue Month and the new ownership of the restaurant, 100 free barbecue sampler platters were given away today. A friend and I lined up outside about half an hour before the 11 am opening. By the time we were allowed inside, there were maybe 20 people behind us. The sampler platter consisted of the following: * Brisket - The cuts were tender, but I would have liked them to be juicier. * Pulled pork - This was my favorite meat as they mixed in a BBQ sauce. * Baby back ribs - The ribs were a little dry, but they were seasoned well. * Baked beans - Not bad as I used the pulled pork to dip into the beans. * Mac and cheese - Gooey with toasted bread crumbs sprinkled on top. * Pickles - These were sweet and not dill slices which surprised me. * White bread - I didn't care for the bread. If it was Texas toast, well then... The new executive chef, Tim, did a nice job of revamping the menu with the addition of many barbecue items. The wait staff today was polite and efficient in getting the free food to all the customers. Coaster Saloon's prime location right across from the north end of Belmont Park should allow continued success when the summer crowds arrive in Mission Beach. read more

I'll start by saying that going out to eat with young kids is hard, and I was prepared for a stressful experience but was completely surprised when it was everything but. We walked into Coaster Saloon randomly to take a break from Belmont Park and was immediately greeted by Steven. He asked where our preferred seating was, but suggested we eat outside because there were games our kids could play. It was a slow time for them and no one else was outside Steven promptly got out drinks and took our order. We asked for Mac and cheese for our kids and he informed us that it was kind of fancy with toppings and asked if we had picky eaters that would be bothered by it. How thoughtful! He noticed when flies were bothering us and brought out a table fan to try to keep them away. Our waters were never empty. He was just so extremely attentive and kind. I have NEVER received that kind of service with my kids. The food itself was really good. The brisket just melted in your mouth and the house sauce is just divine. I hope someone sees this and gives Steven a well-deserved RAISE. Thank you, Steven! read more

We stumbled upon this place the other night and it was so delicious, we were talking about it the next day. I had the chicken tenders and these aren't your regular old CT's. You can tell they were fresh, lightly breaded, well seasoned, and still juicy inside chicken tenders. My family enjoyed their food just as much and look forward to coming to eat here again. read more

Just finished dinner...Bartender was welcoming and offered good choices for our dinner. Wine pour was perfect. We sat at the bar... TV's provided great options between baseball and football. Service was attentive at the bar. The food was a 10! Ribs, pulled pork and Brisket. A great combo. More than enough for 2 ppl! The short of it: NOT A FAMILY FRIENDLY RESTAURANT. MANAGEMENT IS UNQUALIFIED AND RUDE. Lost our patronage for good after the first few words spoken. Dear business owner, you need a new restaurant manager. The male manager today is better suited as a security guard at CVS pharmacy tasked to kick out homeless people, if that. The long of it: My husband and I have been here every weekend for the past couple months with our 4 year old daughter and have really had a great food and service experience with a waitress originally from Pennsylvania (forgot her name). And even though there wasn't anything on the menu our daughter could eat, except for their fries, we still said it was our new favorite weekend outing. Until today. We brought in a pizza pretzel for our daughter because she didn't want fries today for lunch and were immediately met by a gentlemen who could not have been more discourteous. He seemed pained to even crack a smile and displayed an inability to speak in anything other than a discriminatory tone; like we were criminals. "No outside food allowed," he said. My husband tried to explain that we were going to be ordering a lot off the menu for ourselves, it's just that our daughter is a picky eater and won't sit through the meal if we make her eat anything on the menu today. The gentleman had a stone faced response. After the first few seconds of hearing the tone he took with my husband, I started packing up to leave. Who wants to go to a restaurant and be treated like scum? When my husband asked to speak to a manager and the gentleman's response was "I am the manager", I felt the need to post this review for the business owner's sake. We are business owner ourselves. We understand business policy and we also encounter patrons who are unaware or unwilling to follow them. We certainly do decline services in special circumstances but always with grace and courtesy. The result? Our patrons follow policy, choose to remain loyal, and continue to refer friends to our establishment. With that said, we went a couple doors down to the Sandbar and were also told we could not bring in outside food for our daughter. But their staff could not have been nicer about it. "We're so sorry for this... we know it's such an inconvenience... it's just a policy we have to enforce but please give us another chance on another day... we have a kid's menu." And with that, we will be happily back to the Sandbar every weekend from here on. By the looks of how many kids were at the Sandar, I think it's going to be a more welcoming place for young families like ours. read more

Was out celebrating a wonderful job offer and was out at Mission Beach... I was walking down the boardwalk and smelled the most amazingly delicious smell. Obviously I had to check it out... From the moment you step foot at the front door, you feel welcomed. Joe greeted us and because we live here, we hesitated it would be too touristy, but wow what amazing hospitality he provided. Once he sat us down, Maddy took over and took our orders flawlessly. I have never experienced such impeccable service from a waitress. Some work friends and I came in here for happy hour last night and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food we received here. We thought we were going to a dive beach bar with typical mediocre bar food and boy were we wrong! Drink and food specials were decent and again the food was the bomb. We ordered Texas nachos, frito pie, chicken tenders, Mac n cheese with brisket! Al if it was delicious. The brisket wasn't dry at all and had a good flavor. Really enjoyed my recent Labor Day weekend in San Diego. Los Angeles does not have any decent bbq and was so stoked to see so much bbq restaurant. Me and my family stopped here one late night after leaving Belmont park. The food was so good we came back two days later before heading home lol. We were just looking for a spot to grab a bite to eat near Belmont Park and found this BBQ gem. I got the 2 meat combo with Pulled Pork, Brisket, bacon potato salad, and a side salad. It was delicious! The brisket just fell apart on your fork. Their sauce is more of a Kansas City sweet than tangy. They have a MASSIVE 28oz Bloody Mary with a rib, chicken, bacon, Texas toast, loaded in it, that looked so mouthwatering. I tried their small normal sized Bloody Mary so I could see if I liked their mix and it's delicious!! This place has seating at the bar and some on the patio. There was no wait to get in. The vibe: This is a fun indoor/outdoor beach BBQ spot. Very easy to find being right across the street from the rollercoaster. There is a nice assortment of TVs and great music to boot. The food: A solid selection of BBQ items. I tried the classic pulled pork Sammie. It was good, but definitely needs BBQ sauce. Luckily they have plenty. And they overload your plate with fries, so no need to order extra. I also hear that the drink selection is extensive, but I didn't order anything. The service: Great. I don't know how they did it, but the waiters graciously handled our rambunctious party of 9 with ease. That right there definitely bumped them up to 5 stars. I'll definitely be back! read more

This place is phenomenal, especially during the football season! Emily M was our server a few times before we decided to start sitting at the bar our last few times (closer to the taps lol) and every time she served us was she not only welcoming, a great listener and great served to us but loved on our furry friends (dogs) as if they were her own. The food and drinks were just what we needed on football Sundays and couldn't ask for anything better! For ambiance, they say they are a Cardinals bar but anyone who is rocking a jersey that day, no matter what sport it is, is greeted with open arms, laughs and smiles.
