My wife and I walked into this place at around 11am on a Saturday. We sat down and ordered breakfast. While we were waiting for our food, I got a hankering for an espresso drink, and they don't sell them, so I walked a few doors down and got one. When I walked back in, some guy physically grabbed me. He didn't identify himself as the owner, but I think he was. He began screaming at me about bringing in outside drinks. I asked him to let me go, and I tried to explain that I only brought on in because they did not sell them, and my wife and I had already been seated and ordered. He just screamed at me. His breath reeked of alcohol. (Remember, this was 11am.) He wouldn't listen to anything I said, and called a bouncer (!) over to remove me. My wife and I left. If he, or anyone, had simply said, "sorry, we don't allow outside drinks here," I would have politely complied. I never even saw a sign that said no outside drinks. The owner (?) of this establishment is an angry, abusive jerk. Don't give him your money. read more

We ventured to this place right after I got cited for smoking a damn cigarette in the parking lot at South Mission. Smokers beware: the Nazis of SDPD will get you for smoking on the boardwalk, cliffs, park area, parking lots and of course the sand if you are chilling down there. Super lame, I get to do 6 hours of community service for it or pay 300 dollars..ANYWAZE..... We went to this place so I could get a much needed alcoholic beverage and amigo could consume some calories after body surfing for a good 3 hours straight. We sat down in the back patio where they were bumping loud ass rock 105.3 type music. It was super loud and angry sounding which was fitting for the moment but annoying after five minutes. I considered the amount of cops and decided I didn't want to risk getting a DUI along with my stupid smoking ticket so I vetoed the margarita and went for a corona which cost me 5 bucks. Amigo ordered the 2.50 PBR draft and a burger. The flustered waitress brought out a blue moon by accident which he enjoyed. I ended up ordering a BLT to go along with beer number two. It was interesting with some spicy mayo on it. The onion rings looked good but tasted blah. Amigo's burger looked alright but even the topping of jalapeno poppers didn't make it Delicious. We finished foods and beers and waited 20 minutes for some sort of check bearer. She finally came and and had overcharged us so we had to get that all straightened out. I was blown assay with service and food. PB can be hit or miss most of the time missing so it was nice to find Coaster Saloon. Drinks were good and met my wife's stiff standards my kids ate all the food without me asking huge plus. The Texas Nacho's with brisket were very tasty. Brisket was melt in your mouth. I love Coasters with all my heart. It is such a good time especially on nights when they have Reaganomics (an awesome 80s cover band). I think I'm a little biased though because the love of my life lives right down the street and nights at the Coaster often turn into awesome after parties. It's also a major cock fest which my girlfriends and I like --boys and beer -- it doesn't get much better than that. Plus, like Kinsee said, the beach is a few feet away so it is almost inevitable that my friends and I end up on sitting in the sand stuffing our faces with a big greasy burrito from that corner stand. I think I also love the Coasters so much because it was the first place where the bartenders and bouncers recognized me and hooked it up -- and to a barfly like me that's like the ultimate compliment. read more

But after thinking through the very limited options in the neighborhood, my fianceé and I came up with the Coaster Saloon. We'd never been. So we stopped in on a beautiful Mission Beach Sunday afternoon for a good burger. And I'm happy to say we were not disappointed. At least not with the burger. The place was fairly crowded but we had no problem seating ourselves in a booth. The Coaster Saloon features big flat screens in every direction you look. Lakers playoffs, MLB Sunday game, poker, car racing, and a NHL game were all on. There was classic rock playing on the sound system. An odd mix but a decent vibe. The waitress was way low energy (tired, maybe?) and didn't smile once but she got us menus and drinks in a fair amount of time. My biggest complaint is that the Diet Cokes were served in tiny plastic party cups. Seriously. No bueno. I went with the heartiest, most unique looking burger on the menu - one called the 3X. Three patties, lots and lots of cheese, and grilled onions. And it was tasty. Messy in good way. The burger patties were perfectly cooked. The huge amount of cheese was exactly what I was looking for when I read the menu description. And I took it down! Not a bite left. I thought it was a pretty decent value ($9.95 with fries) and in Mission Beach, there aren't many burgers to be had. All in all, an "A" tasting burger joint with adequate "B" level service in the heart of Mission Beach. Roberto, Santana, and Sara better watch out! I hate to give only 2 stars to this venerable MB institution, but it's simply not what she used to be. A six dollar pint of draft beer is hard enough to justify, but when it's only 2/3 of a glass after foam dies down, it's downright obnoxious. Food is still tasty, and there are some good deals on the menu, but the days of unbelievably good food specials are long gone. Weekend crowd seems to be made up of a mix of older bikers, older hippies, older blue collar and a few tourists. Inescapable jukebox is dominated by loud death metal and other non-melodic, fast percussive, and obstreperous noise, well-capable of inducing spontaneous headache after a short while. Service was slow, and there was a mistake with the bill (although it was ultimately fixed). All in all, my latest Coaster experience was a bit of a let-down. read more

As a hardcore foodie, I have driven across this country literally from coast to coast sampling different bbq... hands down in the top 5 baby back ribs I have ever eaten! This includes the last 15 years attempting to perfect my own culinary recipes and smoking styles. Tremendous dry rub, perfect infusion amount of natural wood smoke, and last but not least perfect tenderness and moisture from the slow smoking process. The house made bbq sauce was excellent also. Enjoyed our last dinner on Mission Beach with some BBQ. The Mac-N-Cheese was the best. My son ordered it with brisket and he was shocked by how much brisket he got. The ribs were fall off the bone, just how I like them. Coleslaw was a yummy side but the beans were not our favorite. Once we added a little bbq sauce we liked them better. Our group has been here at least 3 (maybe 4) times this year alone on weekend visits to San Diego and every time we come we comment that the exterior look of this bar and grill betray how good the food is on the inside. From the outside it just looks it would be like your typical bar grub, but the food here is genuinely good. My last visit I had a salad with a seared tuna steak that made my whole table jealous. (Not that their dishes weren't delicious too, but mine was just the clear 'winner' at that dinner.) Other dinners here have involved chicken sandwiches, fish tacos, and other salads, all very tasty, perfctly cooked and fresh. This is quickly becoming one of our preferred places in Mission Beach. Our only complaint is the smell of cigarette smoke from patrons smoking around us, but I guess it is what it is since it's technically in indoor/outdoor facility. (Still...gross.) read more

Sigh... the TNT wings were supposed to be spicy...instead, it seemed they were brined in sea water. Salty wouldn't describe these wings. The fries however were not salted at all. I think someone noticed the error and tried to compensate by not salting the fries. The collard greens were sweet! Yes! Sweet! Really disappointed to write this review, seeing as how the food looked amazing and they had a GREAT beer selection on tap. My boyfriend and I came here to have lunch. While the indoor seating was a little busy, we decided to sit outside (it's a seat yourself type of bar). We were next to this party of 8, who all had drinks and had already ordered. Awesome, that means someone will see us. We sat at the table for about 10 minutes, with not even a menu or acknowledgement. My boyfriend had to go get menus from the host table. Anyways, after reading over the menu and deciding what we wanted the party of 8 next to us had their food brought to them, and had their servers (there were two) come to their table at least 3 or 4 times delivering entrees or anything else they needed and yet we were ignored. We sat for another 10 minutes waiting for service. We are really patient people and don't like to bother those who are trying to do their jobs but I had to go get some help. Went up to a server and asked if we could get some service, she said, "Yeah, where are you seated?" pointed to our table, and then I sat back down. Five more minutes go by and STILL no service. We are thoroughly disappointed with this experience and probably will not return. We went to Kronos next door and had delicious gyros instead. read more

I want to give this place 5 stars because I love playing pool on the deck and listening to great tunes.This bar is at an awesome location, the vibe is fun and the patio is great! Unfortunately I have had some bad experience with the employees. Not the owner John, he's great! One time when my boyfriend and I wanted to come to mission beach to ride the coaster and do some day drinking, but he had to use the restroom real quick and decided to run into the Coaster. The bartender barked at him that he couldn't use it unless he was a customer. So he bought a shot of rumpy and she still gave him attitude, so we obviously did not come back for a drink after the roller coaster. This time I tried to run in real quick to use the restroom, and granted it was a busy saturday and I'm sure they are sick of tourist running in to use their facilities, but the way I was yelled at was unnecessary. I heard a girl yelling and turned around to see an employee running at me so I gave her my ID, and at that point she told me if I wasn't sitting down to eat than I can't use the restroom. I tried to explain that I am a regular at this bar but she told me she didn't care. I too have worked at a busy bar right on the boardwalk and everyday people would stroll in use our bathroom and we always let them. And you know what, they usually came back for drinks after they were done at the beach. After these couple of experiences it is highly doubtful I will return here. read more

The evening was an absolutely beautiful June evening. The kind of evening folks from Phoenix, like ourselves, come to San Diego for. It's face-melting hot in the desert this time of year, and the promise of a cool ocean breeze, at first, seems like the series of mirages encountered on the drive over. Until you arrive and the California chill brushes your skin. On this trip we stayed at a hotel on Mission Bay, a short walk from Belmont Park. With two little ones, 6 & 2, the sounds and smells of the roller coaster & funnel cake could not be ignored. By the end of our day of beach & mild sunburns, we sought refuge and found it at The Coaster. Aptly named, being it is directly across the street from Belmont Park's coaster, it is an unassuming restaurant/bar with plain white lettering on the plexiglass overlooking the sidewalk. Inside is equally humble. A good sized space with a bar with TV's in the center. The patio just past the bar turned out to be exactly what we needed. Shaded with that wonderful breeze somehow making its way to us, the thought of curling up right there was tempting, but it's a restaurant and that'd be weird. At first glance, the menu seemed typical; burgers, tacos, pizza, sandwiches with a respectable array of beers, set us up for a what appeared to be a run of the mill, pub grub meal. Further examination of the menu offered hope with impressive descriptions of the meals. But on laminated paper, everything looks good. The friendly waitress was patient with us as we only ordered water. Then the kids split a half order of chicken nachos, which were slightly above average and more than enough for them both. My wife had the California burger and commented, with a hint of surprise, how good it was. I had the Hawaiian burger and was also very pleased with the execution. The pineapple was cooked just about right and had just enough teriyaki. My onion rings were sweet and crispy and the french fries had a little crisp to them, but not over cooked. With a total bill of $33, and with the quality of the food, it was worth the price. We will be returning to The Coaster. You should go. Eat. Enjoy. read more

I give this a three-star with no disrespect to the business. Some call them dive bars; I consider it more of a chill, cheaper alternative to Sandbar. One-half of the bar is an enclosed non-smoking section while the other half is a topless structure catering to the carcinogen-community. I've never experienced an interference when sitting in the non-section, but I've read others have. drinks: If you come during happy hour (weekdays) or during NFL games, domestic drafts (Bud/BL/PBR/Coors) are $2.50. Happy hour Appetizers are half-off and Game Day wings are half as well. They also have a variety of craft beer and top-shelf liquor. Up until recently I'd only had drinks here, surprise surprise, but stopped in with a friend early once for a bite to eat and I haven't been let down once. Try the Mahi-mahi sandwich wrap and onion rings. You'll forget you're eating at a bar. There's a magical cheesecake I had the luxury of trying and now I can't get it out of my head. If I recall it had a mango and some sort of berry sauce. I don't know, I wasn't thinking clearly because I was trying to figure out why I'd never tried it before. Feeling blue? My old college roommate and her boyfriend work here, which is how I was introduced to this place. My friend and I went to visit her during the day while she was working and it was pretty cool. It's right by the beach so I imagine this place is awesome during the summer. Tasty strawberry margarita. They have one rinky-dink pool table that this 70-year old woman was tearing up. Cheesy rock music playing in the back. Overall, laid back beach bar, with its share of regulars and old drunks. We returned that night to say hi to her boyfriend who was working and have a shot. Apparently they just hired a DJ to play on Friday and Saturday nights and apparently this "DJ" only has records up to 2002. Which is fine, we found some nice drunk boys to dance with us (we literally had the "dancefloor" to ourselves). Cool place. I'd like to come back on a summer night. read more
