Brisket was tender with good flavor. Ribs were dry rubbed and tender as well. Pulled pork was my favorite, moist and very flavorful. We both liked the Killer beans. Onion rings were hot & crispy but a little too much bread for my taste. Mac n cheese was basic. The homemade pickles & onions were a tasty complement to the BBQ. Can you say DEE-LI-SHUSH? Don't let the fact that this place is close to the beach fool you into thinking that the food is mediocre. Went here today with some co-workers and omgee...we loved everything we had. We had a variety of items like Mac/Cheese, Chicken Cesar Salad, Fish and Chips, Brisket, Pork Ribs, BBQ Chicken, Collard Greens, Beans, Hamburgers. We all shared and EVERYTHING was sooo good. I'm not much of a Chicken Cesar Salad gal but wow! I will definitely be back to try the other stuff on their menu but considering that fact that today's meal did not disappoint I'm sure whatever I get when I come back will be fabulous. Stopped through here last night with two buddies after our basketball game (was dropping one off a few blocks down in Mission). Was about the only thing open at 9:30 p.m. in the area, and the place was hopping! Caught the end of the OKC/Clippers series, but more importantly enjoyed a great meal and a quite impressive draft beer list. I sprung for the blackened salmon wrap, which was delicious, albeit saucy (I think everything has too much sauce. America.). My buddies both had steaks and commented numerous times how good they were. The craft beer list beats just about any spot in Mission. In terms of the vibe... you really have to like this sort of thing and I happen to. The people are far less beautiful than the usual SoCal beach scene - and it has more of a townie feel - but goddamn, they are fun. I recently went to the Coaster Saloon for the first time after seeing it for many years. On the outside there isn't much to see. It looks like your typical beach side dive bar. And that is exactly what it is; the decor isn't that impressive although the surfboards are cool...as is the life size Marilyn Monroe poster near the bathrooms. The staff is friendly and the drinks are stiff. This is not a place you need to dress up to go to. You don't have to worry about impressing people here, because they don't care. It's in an awesome location. Literally 20 steps from the beach. If you're brave enough, hit up the Big Dipper roller coaster across the street. The only downside is that they don't have food since their kitchen burned. They will, though, send a server to one of the nearby eateries to get you food. Where do you find service like this nowadays? Also, if you go into the bathrooms, they are VERY small...Everything in that bathroom is small. Even the sink. I had to hold my hands and rub them together to wash them. Not much room for movement in those small sinks. read more

Came back to update my past review, since this is a completely different place now! They JUST changed the menu, and are under new ownership/management. Instead of the old standard bar food menu, the "Coaster" now serves up some amazing BBQ and delicious brunch items at great prices. The patio no longer allows smoking. There is fresh paint and some new tables and decor. We came on Sunday to watch football last weekend and tried the giant cinnamon roll. So good!! I ate the whole thing myself... whoops. My husband had biscuits and gravy w/3 eggs for $6!!!!! Delicious and cheap. The whole menu is competitively priced, especially for the beach! We bring our kids and the staff is always friendly and accommodating. We came back to try the BBQ and let me say, we already went back for a second try. I swear we DO cook at home too The brisket and half chicken.... yum! The bbq plates come with 2 sides (we've tried them all except for the potato mac salad), cornbread with sweet butter, and the most delicious pickled onions and sweet pickles. My husband actually said the chicken was the best he's ever had, and he didn't even use the yummy bbq sauce. We are local and liked this place before, but are loving the new changes! This place was ABSOLUTELY amazing!!! I got the beef brisket with onion rings, garlic toast and a Cesar salad! Even the salad was BOMB! Meat was juicy melt in ur mouth, onion rings perfectly crisp and not stringy with a good flavor and garlic bread just delicious... definitely recommend as a go to if ur down the boardwalk at Mission beach. Came here on Father's Day for breakfast. Service was terrible. We waited 30 minutes for someone to take our order. 10 minutes after we arrived, a host brought us waters so at least we were acknowledged. The breakfast was pretty decent, but they need to do something about the service. When we finally got a waitress, she was nice and apologized for the long wait! If you love all American Bbq this is the spot to be! My boyfriend and I really enjoyed it. Me and my family are staying at the Bahia resort and decided to try this place while looking for a place to eat. At first it looks like a bar that would be on bar rescue but once we say down we thought differently! Their beer selection is awesome and I like how they underline the local breweries! Their food was awesome with big portions. I was able to share their basket of onion rings with one other person and be perfectly content. The only complaint would be the flies. Other than that, awesome place and I definitely recommend it if you're in the area!! We enjoyed the food so much we went back for happy hour the same day and again they did not disappoint once again. The Coaster has new owners who have kept the casual beach vibe, but have cleaned up the restaurant and changed the menu. TV's with music videos, sports, and entertaining video clips, along with historic Mission Beach photo's and other fun items decorate the walls. Our friendly and efficient server, Shawn, did a really good job of serving a dozen of us. We liked our food and enjoyed the addition of BBQ to the new menu. The nachos are delicious, and have a smoky flavor. I had the Big O Brisket sandwich, which is very tasty. We also liked the sides and the cocktails. We weren't loving the music playing when we arrived, but they kindly changed the music for our demographic. We live in the neighborhood and appreciate the positive changes with the new Coaster. I've lived in the area for 4 years and I always thought this place was a tourist trap. I'm a BBQ junkie and noticed one day that they had many BBQ options including brisket. We went to the Coaster Saloon for the first time since the Cohen's bought it today. The food was beyond spectacular! They have a very intricate process of bar-B-que that has amazing results. We had the Big O sand which was Beef Brisket. It was huge and delicious. Our waiter Shawn was fabulous. He was quick and perceptive and paid attention. I live nearby and have stopped in 3 times before. The beer selection is their biggest plus and I've seen them play Monday night football on the projector screen before which should be fun someday. My two biggest problems are the raider flag hanging near front and center above the bar and the table service. As a San Diegan i know that no local bar should ever have a raiders flag hanging inside. Unless it's a prison themed bar. This really needs to go, and as a local I've been suggesting taking down the flag on each receipt I leave. The service was unusually slow. Now I don't normally expect bar table service to be great, but when we ve all finished our beers and food and are waiting for 15 minutes, that is too long. Then when you mix up all the orders and take another 15 to fix it. It's too long. It's the closest I've ever come to walking out on a check. I've found better service at other bars nearby.
