Do NOT go here if you're vegan! They intentionally misled members of the community and even a local vegan restaurant owner into believing many of their donuts were vegan. They only showed partial ingredients lists when asked. Turns out, the donuts contain milk products. Unfortunately I ate donuts from Colonial - THINKING they were vegan - several times before I found out. They even sold dozens of donuts to local vegan events. I'm just thankful I am vegan for ethical reasons and not someone with a severe food allergy. Shady business practices, do not want. read more

So I accidentally erased my original review of Colonial Bakery. Yikes! That's a rookie yelper for you. (and I lost my "first to review" status! booo) Bottom line is, I truly enjoy this place not only because it was voted best donuts in all of long beach http://www.presstelegram.com/ci_13256036 (it's been here for like 83 years or more), but because of the varied clientele. They include the few locals do dare venture in like me (with 2 small children in tow) and the "residents" of nearby Lincoln Park, home to many without a descent roof over their heads. Plus, the regular old navy/shipyard guys who spend most of their waking moments there. Can't beat the doughnuts and the $2.99 breakfast complete with toast, eggs (any style), sausage and bacon. I am partial to the croissants myself (specially the ham and cheese-filled kind). The owners are gracious and pretty much know every face that walk in through their doors. If you're looking for fancy, this place ain't for you. If you're looking not to be around people society would rather not see, this place ain't for you. Best place to get a donut in downtown. The service is friendly, the donuts are tasty and cheap. It's a little run down and you've got the occasional dubious character who might be hanging around, but hey it's all better for the local flavor. I'm not a big coffee guy but most people I've talked to about it say it's only decent, so if that's a big deal to you this may be a tipping point. Also of note, I noticed while watching Season 3 of Dexter that they filmed a scene in this little place. Of course they blasted white light in from the outside to prevent seeing the dirty ass Burger King across the way. GREATEST DONUTS IN TOWN SINCE I WAS VERY YOUNG. I grew up around this donut shop,i've never had trouble and lets face it, this donuts are the fucking greatest, never had any that taste any better. I live about two blocks away from Colonial. The reason why I give them 5 stars is because they truly have great doughnuts. There sandwiches are also excellent for the price. This place is NOT vegan, yes it serves unhealthy foods and since it's located in downtown, the people are not your yuppie type. I realize that we are free to express our thoughts, but try to understand that this is an OLD cafe in downtown... yes it needs paint and it can use a lot of upgrades, but with upgrades come higher prices. I used to patronize them almost everyday for a Cinnamon roll and coffee... sometimes there egg sandwich that was always awesome. Now that I'm Vegan for almost two years I've not been there since May of 2012. I no longer eat meat of any kind or dairy and I may have a doughnut once a year, but it won't be because I bought it. In conclusion, some of the best cafes and restaurants are hole in the walls. They may not be the best looking and the clientele may not ever be your type to become your best friends, but they are a piece of history. I have been coming here for years. I live in the neighborhood and this is a great place to stop on your way to work. They serve fresh donuts made that morning, and great breakfast's at a cheap price. Their breakfast sandwiches are fat and tasty. The owners are husband and wife, and have owned this donut shop more then 35 years. We stopped by on a Sunday morning for a quick donut and coffee. Service was quick and priced right ($2.50 for 2 donuts and a coffee). The interior is aged and seating is limited so it's probably better suited for grab and go. Both donuts were fresh and tasty and the coffee was straightforward. I've been coming to this little donut shop for about 3 years now... I work just a few block away. Their donuts never disappoint. They're always fresh and really soft, which I love. Today, I had one of their breakfast sandwiches for the first time... just a regular bacon and egg sandwich, and I have to say it was very good. The bacon had the perfect crisp to it and they weren't stingy with the bacon, the portion was perfect. Besides their yummy treats, I have to add that their customer service is always great. I've been anxious to check this place out since it's so close to my house, but I'll admit I had to work up some courage. Pleasant-ish surprise. It's very retro inside, but not in a cute way. Lots of faded pictures of superman cakes and whatnot that they can supposedly make line the walls. The display cases of donuts and pastries are kind of phoning it in- they're mostly empty, BUT the glazed donuts are pretty awesome- all soft and melt in your mouth. And I know they actually bake them there because I can smell it at night, although you wouldn't guess from looking at the place- there's no identifiable kitchen. In fact, if you order a sandwich, the lady peeps her head inside what looks like a closet to tell the cook. Speaking of sandwiches, I tried a breakfast sandwich, and it was pretty good. It's a filthy place. The first time I went I got food poisoning. Hoping it was from something else, I went back and got sick a second time. Because I'm a glutton for punishment, I went a third and final time, greeted by multiple flies in the donut case. I walked in, saw the flies, spun around and walked out. Chain donuts don't have anything on Colonial Bakery. These guys know their way around baked goods. These are definitely home/handmade and there's generally a good variety. Get up too late and the pickings can be slim, however. This is definitely a hole-in-the-wall type of place with clientele to match. I adore their croissants - buttery, flakey.... * drool * . They also have a variety of breakfast foods and drinks and such. I think the lady who runs it is Vietnamese which makes sense since Vietnam was once a French colony. Runs about a dollar per item, which is very reasonable. Seeing the prior review, I'll need to try out the sandwiches and potatoes. read more
