Doesn't look like much from the exterior as it is tucked into a corner in a strip mall. Interior is alright. Nothing special. Definitely more cleaner and modern than it used to be in the past. But man oh man is it a fantastic place for the Vietnamese dish called com tam. It's their specialty. Can't speak for the other dishes but for com tam, it hits the spot. My family actually goes here and it's been so long that I've forgotten about it until recently when one of my friends wanted to go here. Nearly everyone in my group enjoyed the dish. I typically get the #27 as it has a bit of everything on the plate. All the works you could say. But some of the other varieties are good as well. My go-to com tam spot! Located in the inner corner of the plaza, Thanh restaurant provides quality Vietnamese dishes super quick at a decent price! Came on a Thursday night at 7pm. Sat immediately, ordered within 5min, and the com tam dishes came out in less than 3min and vegetarian dish came out within 8min. Each dish is around $10-11 with decent portions (none of us took to-go). Best dish has to be 33. Com Tam Thit Nuong Cha Tau Hu Ky! The meat is juicy, the shrimp is thick (rather soggy though), and the cha finishes off the dish with a different style egg in which eggs make every dish better! The pickled veggies were too soggy and sour for me, but my friends enjoyed it! Don't forget to add fish sauce all over your dish! read more

They were about half full at 10am on a Saturday morning. #31: rice plate with julienne pork, pork cake, bbq shrimp, and choice of meat (I did bbq pork). Add an egg! Rice texture was good, and the pork was well seasoned with it too much gristle. The egg was sunny side up with a proper runny yolk. This is the legendary com tam on Bolsa area and my family go to spot. I love the bi here because it's not just all pork skin, it's a good mix with skin and pork. I think the thit nuong is the best here better than the Suong nuong. The shrimp paste is not as great here, I think too much flour than shrimp. Fish sauce is good not overly fishy. My family stop by this restaurant every time we visit the area. We only ever order the broken rice plates, but quality has gone down over the years. This visit we ordered grilled beef and grilled pork dishes. Not only are the cuts of meat not great quality (the grilled beef is basically thin cuts of shabu beef thrown on a grill), but the rice to meat ratio is higher. Way too much rice and less meat! The shrimp cake was mostly flour as well, barely any shrimp. Also no pickled leeks, which is it even com tam if there's no pickled leeks? I also decided to order wonton noodle soup to switch things up, and the noodles were a bit mushy. The broth for the noodles was the same broth that you get on the side when you order rice plates! There also was absolutely no social distancing enforced, every table was filled to capacity. Signs are posted in the restaurant saying to keep your mask on at all times except for when you are eating, but people were taking off their masks as soon as they sit down and even when walking to and from the bathroom. Overall, my family and I were extremely disappointed with the food we received today and I'm not sure if we will continue to come for the sake of tradition or try newer restaurants instead. read more

This is my go to broken rice spot in OC! It's especially crowded during lunch time but the wait is never that long. My fave dish is the com tam thit nuong with tau hu ky (broken rice with grilled pork and fried shrimp patty). Their portions are slightly smaller than other spots in the area though. The rice dish was a little smaller than I expected. The best thing on the plate was surprisingly the tofu. It had such a nice crunch and soft interior texture. Everything else was standard. I have been coming here since it first opened probably around 15 years ago. The food has always been consistent and there is some thing that's new I noticed this time. The plating seems more abundant and we got more rice and more meat and the fish sauce still taste good. The service was prompt and the same employees that were that here. 15 years ago are still here. Prior to COVID, service was always fast and effective. To me, the beauty of this restaurant lies in the consistency and authenticity of the flavors. You know exactly what you are going to get each time. Unfortunately, there are not any "fresh" veggies that you can get in most other Com Tam restaurants (but are you REALLY all sad about that?). I cannot speak for the other dishes as I ALWAYS get some variation of Com Tam Thit Nuong / Suong Nuong with the other dishes. I have friends and family members who come from out of state/country & always ask to come to this place. This would be a great place to introduce your non-Vietnamese friends to broken rice (as I have done many times). Can't speak Vietnamese? That's totally fine, my Vietnamese isn't that great either! The staff is kind and always trying to figure out what I want/need. Thus, take-out is also quick and easy. They currently have socially distance markers outside for a line. This has been my go to place for broken rice plates and I ordered two BBQ pork with julienne pork and steamed eggs for takeout! Wait was about 10 mins so not bad at all. Food has always been amazing here and I really like the texture of their BBQ pork. -1 star for decreased amount of bbq meat over the years, especially noticeable over the past year or so. This is hands down the best Cơm tấm in OC - The pork chop was super flavourful and juicy. The shrimp mousseline in tofu sheets was nice and crispy And the steamed pork cake was super moist and let me tell you, a good nước mắm makes all the difference. This is a pretty popular local restaurant and for good reason. We came in for an early dinner on a weekend and it was already half full. As we were eating, it started to fill up pretty quickly and there were people waiting at the front. Definitely get here early or expect to wait! Our food came so quickly within five minutes. I ordered a broken rice dish with pork shops and fried shrimp paste. My boyfriend got the bun thit nuong. Both were huge portions and very flavorful. My pork chop was seasoned well and was very juicy. For such a big piece, I was impressed that it wasn't dry. Similarly, I've had some bun thit nuongs where the meat was overcooked. This was the case here as the meat was tender yet flavorful. They also gave generous portions of meat compared to the noodles/ veggies. This is a great place to get some authentic Vietnamese comfort food and I'm definitely be back soon. There is a large parking lot but as it is shared with many businesses I can see how it may get packed around dinner time.
