Never really thought about looking up this place. I just knew it was the com tam place in the corner I've been going to since I was a kid. I recently went back a few days ago and it's STILL bussin. I get the usual which is: #34. Com tam (broken rice) with shrimp cake wrapped in crispy fried tofu skin (it tastes much better than it sounds), BBQ pork, a Chinese sausage, and a steamed egg cake. And there's little bits of crispy fried pork which adds a nice texture to each bite. They offer different combinations of "ingredients/toppings" based on your preference (pork chop instead of BBQ pork or egg roll instead of Chinese sausage) so read each one carefully. But the most popular is the #34, as denoted with a little logo next to it. My wife gets the #57 banh canh, which she finds to be the best anywhere and she's tried banh canh at MANY different places. It's a slightly thick red/orange broth, with crab, shrimp, and pork feet/hock which we omit as we're not really fans of it. Their #57 is their most popular banh canh dish. The only minor gripe I have about it is their portions. There have been times in the past where I order two plates. The portions for the rice could be a biiiit bigger and it would be perfect. Good to see that this place is doing well. When we went during lunch it was almost a full house. Service was speedy and the staff was nice. read more

The fried soy sheet shrimp paste was bland and had no shrimp taste whatsoever. I'm not sure I would return. My controversial option is that I've had better com tam in the SGV. read more

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES. This was THE PLACE my family always brought me and my brother too whenever we were dragged to Little Saigon against our wills. Whenever my dad has to work in the area, he always brings back the com tam (broken rice) dishes back home. Nothing slaps more than this place's com tam. The green onion oil, the pieces of fried fat...my mouth's watering reminiscing this meal. First and foremost, as of MANY plazas in this area, it is a human nightmare getting parking here. All it took was one buffoon to park crooked to make an entire row of cars completely diagonal and off the lines. Come here expecting the worst and you hopefully will get a better result. This restaurant gets pretty dang busy too. We came here on a Saturday and EVERY table was taken. Despite this, we got our orders in really quickly when everyone had decided, gotten our food quickly, and the servers were extremely attentive and accommodating. We got the: 1) Rau Ma: -This is an iced pennywort drink. Nostalgic and I remember when we used to have our grandpa's pennywort garden in the background. Instant flashback. -Sweet and very refreshing. -A must every time I see it on a menu. 2) Xi Muoi: -Salted plum drink. -There's a carbonated version with soda water and a lemonade like version and we got the latter. -It's slightly salty with some sweetness to it (like a lemonade, but with the plum flavor). There are also bits of plum in it too. 3) Com Tam (Broken Rice): -If it's in the name of the restaurant, it's THE thing to order! - I don't think I've ever ordered something else, in all the 20+ years that I have eaten food from here. It's just THAT good. -Each rice dish comes with fish sauce and chili paste to mix in the sauce to drizzle and mix into the rice. There's also a small bowl of broth soup to help palate cleanse as well. -LOVE the little pieces of crispy fat that come with the rice and the scallion oil. -Since everyone at the table ordered broken rice, we all just kinda shared the toppings that we got. 4) Broken Rice Toppings: -Egg roll: -Although it's a small piece, it is definitely different from most egg rolls since Vietnamese style egg rolls have meat inside and even then this one stands out for the super crispy exterior! -Lap Xuong (sausage): -Small pieces of sweet sausage covered in scallion oil. -Bi (julienne pork): -Stringy pieces of pork. Another must for this dish that I enjoy. -It adds a bit of "dryness" to the dish but in a good way. -Cha (steamed pork): -This is like an egg and meat quiche. Moist and slightly peppery. -Pretty good too. -Tau Hu Ky (Shrimp Mousseline in Tofu paper): -BIG MUST if you choose to eat here. -The shrimp mousseline is just like a shrimp fish ball? but in a different shape and it is SO GOOD with the crispy tofu paper. -I don't usually see this at other broke rice places, so this is a topping that sets Thanh apart from the others. -BBQ Pork: -Nicely seasoned. Slightly sweet bbq taste with pork. Meat wasn't dry at all. -Doi (pork sausage): -This comes in a sausage patty, but has a great lemon grass flavor. We had friends who aren't big fans of rice and who have never had this dish before just inhale everything until their places are clean. The dish itself is so colorful and each bite is a different textural experience from the broken rice, crispy tofu skin and egg rolls, soft, tender meat, etc, as well as incredibly varied in flavor profile. Saturday lunch the place was packed. Cash Only. There is a clipboard on the left door right when you walk in to sign up. The wait was 10 mins with a few parties ahead of us. This place is straight up Vietnam inside so you know the food is amazing and authentic. Ordered the broken rice with pork chops, and broken rice with grilled pork. The food comes out in 5 minutes which was a little concerning at first but the food is delicious. All the various elements from the meat to the veggies to the shrimp is all tasty. Pricing is about 10-12 bucks each which is reasonable for todays standards. Recommended if you are looking for something besides pho. read more

The first impression is this place is always crowded. People come here in groups, so it might be overwhelmed if you go there just by yourself. They have a good selection of choices for a plate of Com Tam (Vietnamese broken rice). I ordered a Suon, Bi, Tau Hu Ky, and it came out so fast even though they were with full house seats at that time. In my opinion, the fish sauce and soup on the side did not go well with the main Com Tam dish. The fish sauce needs to be adjusted to have more sauce than chilis floating on top while the soup needs more flavors to it. Overall: 8/10 for the Com Tam. We ordered a broken rice dish and a vermicelli noodle dish. The broken rice dish was the com Tâm- got the pork with it, along with pork floss and the quiche-like side. I liked how fluffy and buttery the rice and the pork floss was. The pork was good too - sometimes other places would have too much fat on the pork, that it's not enjoyable to eat - but it was amazing here. The egg/quiche was ok- great complement to the dish but something was missing. We really liked how the egg roll in the vermicelli dish was cooked. The beef in this bowl was flavorful. Both dishes were pretty generous in size. Reasonable pricing as well during these times too It's a simple restaurant with little decor. The staff welcomed us right away when we entered. My go-to com tam spot! Located in the inner corner of the plaza, Thanh restaurant provides quality Vietnamese dishes super quick at a decent price! Came on a Thursday night at 7pm. Sat immediately, ordered within 5min, and the com tam dishes came out in less than 3min and vegetarian dish came out within 8min. Doesn't look like much from the exterior as it is tucked into a corner in a strip mall. Interior is alright. Nothing special. Definitely more cleaner and modern than it used to be in the past. But man oh man is it a fantastic place for the Vietnamese dish called com tam. It's their specialty. Can't speak for the other dishes but for com tam, it hits the spot. My family actually goes here and it's been so long that I've forgotten about it until recently when one of my friends wanted to go here. Nearly everyone in my group enjoyed the dish. My family stop by this restaurant every time we visit the area. We only ever order the broken rice plates, but quality has gone down over the years. This visit we ordered grilled beef and grilled pork dishes. Not only are the cuts of meat not great quality (the grilled beef is basically thin cuts of shabu beef thrown on a grill), but the rice to meat ratio is higher. Way too much rice and less meat! The shrimp cake was mostly flour as well, barely any shrimp. Also no pickled leeks, which is it even com tam if there's no pickled leeks? I also decided to order wonton noodle soup to switch things up, and the noodles were a bit mushy. The broth for the noodles was the same broth that you get on the side when you order rice plates! There also was absolutely no social distancing enforced, every table was filled to capacity. Signs are posted in the restaurant saying to keep your mask on at all times except for when you are eating, but people were taking off their masks as soon as they sit down and even when walking to and from the bathroom. Overall, my family and I were extremely disappointed with the food we received today and I'm not sure if we will continue to come for the sake of tradition or try newer restaurants instead. read more

We got recs from one of the waiter to grab the com Tam bi cha suon tau hu ky and that it could easily feed 2. So we ordered it. We got complimentary soup which was nice. The rice dish was a little smaller than I expected. The best thing on the plate was surprisingly the tofu. It had such a nice crunch and soft interior texture. Everything else was standard. This is the legendary com tam on Bolsa area and my family go to spot. I love the bi here because it's not just all pork skin, it's a good mix with skin and pork. Prior to COVID, service was always fast and effective. To me, the beauty of this restaurant lies in the consistency and authenticity of the flavors. You know exactly what you are going to get each time. Unfortunately, there are not any "fresh" veggies that you can get in most other Com Tam restaurants (but are you REALLY all sad about that?). I cannot speak for the other dishes as I ALWAYS get some variation of Com Tam Thit Nuong / Suong Nuong with the other dishes. I have friends and family members who come from out of state/country & always ask to come to this place. This would be a great place to introduce your non-Vietnamese friends to broken rice (as I have done many times). Can't speak Vietnamese? That's totally fine, my Vietnamese isn't that great either!
