I finally got to dine here after anticipating it for so long, and it didn't disappoint! The vibes were immaculate, from the staff to the music. It was everything I needed. Absolutely loved the service from host, to bartenders, to waiters. Everything was amazing. The drinks we ordered: Purplish drank- sweet and floral. Very refreshing. Kinfolk- strong and smooth Cherie amour- smokey and dry with a nice light sweetness. Hey auntie- tasted like a vodka margarita. Nearest green apple- tart and refreshing. Though I liked them all. Cherie amour was my top but ordered purplish drank twice. Now for the food. Akara- could not get enough of this, wish I ordered 2. Slow burn- had the right kick and a perfect hands on dish. Those onions are so sweet and Smokey. Hella filthy rice vegan- came from crispy fried mushrooms on top. Had a slow perfect burn/heat. Wasn't overpowering and the fresh green onion gave a great balance. My husband got the bbq shrimp and Mac n cheese. He was in heaven. Seattle needs more cooking like this. Definitely will be back. I cannot stop singing praises for this restaurant!! I've been twice now for dinner and both times were fantastic. Excellent and attentive service. The hood sushi is so tasty as an appetizer. I've had the pork chop and the barbere chicken for mains. Both were so rich and flavorful and came in generous portions. Their mac and cheese is dense and thick and artery clogging in the best way haha. I also loved their collard greens and their cornbread, which was super buttery. The first time I came before opening for a standby table. The second time I made a reservation for my birthday at their opening time again. I suggest making a reservation to save any trouble. I'm not sure how busy they get during peak dinner hours. I think about their food all the time, and I can't wait to keep coming back. read more

Great ambiance and vibe. We went on a busy night and had to wait a while but that gave us a chance to check out the surrounding area and shops. There weren't a lot but we did get some gooey cookies at a cookie shop up the street! Once inside, I loved the unique menu and food options not readily available in Tucson, AZ (where I'm from) restaurants. Unfortunately I wasn't hungry this night but I HAD to get to this restaurant before we left town. I got the catfish sushi and loved it. Both entrees were great. My only regret is that I couldn't order more! Only complaint is the parking ! We did find street parking in the neighborhood next to the restaurant but it was super tight . Service at the restaurant is 5/5, the staff is super friendly and easy going. I arrived earlier than the original scheduled time and the host was able to get us seated fairly quick without waiting. The waiters were wonderful and attentive to our needs. We ordered hood sushi, PTL wings, neckbone stew, catfish and grits, mac & cheese, buttery cornbread, daily greens, peach cobbla, and banana pudding. I saw so many pictures and was excited to try the hood sushi. It was a bit disappointing as the sushi lacks taste and too much rice that mask over the catfish and sauce wrapped within. The neckbone meat was delicious and falls right off the bone. The stew itself was salty; not sure if it's over seasoned on our dish or it's usually heavy in flavor. Everything else was wonderful and no complaint. The sauce on the PTL wings were delicious and wish there were more. The catfish was fried to perfection and excellent texture. We went here for dinner as a party of five. We had to wait a few minutes to be seated but the hostess was super nice and we had a fun chat with her about her love for watermelons while we waited. We sat outside and it was pretty and comfortable. Once we were seated, our waitress came over very quickly with menus and water and let us know she'd be back to give us the spiel. We had a few dietary restrictions and she was able to tell us off the top of her head which dishes were okay to eat based on this information -- I've literally never seen someone do this before; it was very impressive. She was also very kind and attentive throughout the evening. We all started off with some yummy drinks which got thumbs up all around. Onto the food. For small plates - the hummus was delicious, everything you want hummus to be, with nice crispy bread. The shrimp toast was a fan favorite with delicious sauce -- highly, highly recommend. The hood sushi was really unique and full of wonderful flavor. The fritters had a nice Indian spice and were a great addition to the table; voted best by one of the party. For large plates we got the chicken in a bed of lentils. This was my favorite, and chicken isn't even usually a go-to food for me. It was just seasoned and cooked so unbelievably well and the lentils were really nice with it. For sides, the mac and cheese was nice and cheesy and we loved the scallions on top. We also got collard greens which were a great way to round out the meal with some well-cooked greens. For dessert we got a lovely little key lime pie to share, with a great custard texture and perfectly cooked Graham cracker crust. Wow what a place! First, the service is absolutely amazing. And the vibes of the entire restaurant are so lively, being here just makes you happy and everyone from the servers and hostess's have such a warm and welcoming attitude! I heard from my sister that they are saving some tables for walk-ins, as they are booked out all summer. Showed up at 5PM as a walk in and me and my bf were seated pretty quick! The restaurant was busy and every table was full, so we got reallyyy lucky. The hostess and waitress were so so nice, we had small talk, but not in the bad way. It was good small talk haha. Now for the food. We ordered a few dishes to share and my favorite dish was the clams/mussels appetizer. It was amazing. So flavorful with coconuts and the Laotian sausage was soooooo bomb. With just the right amount of spice. The relish sides were also a perfect little dish to have while we talked and drank. The grilled okra was delicious. Of course the catfish and grits and greens were phenomenal. Everything just, tasted fantastic. We could catch all the notes of all the flavor profiles without things getting muddled together. Communion left nothing for the imagination and left it all on the table. We were walk ups and waited about 30 minutes. Co-Owners we're busy making sure everyone was enjoying their timely meal. Once seated at the bar (great spots btw). I ordered my drink and Mac for an appetizer. I'd personally add a little garlic salt and pepper, but they were both great. To the main entree, the pork chop was so freaking tender I look forward to eating again, the cabbage underneath was the perfect side. My friend had the Stew, which we both couldn't get enough of. I always dislike when restaurants get rid of the flavor to accommodate tastes, this one doesn't. EVERYTHING was what it needed to be and if you don't like it, go find something bland to eat. The seasoning was unique southern twist but wished it was less oily and cheese was better incorporated ($12) Stuffed trout was really good it had a nice cornmeal coating, my favorite thing on my menu but for $52 you think they could de bone the fish. Wasn't pleasant having to remove bones every bite and took away from the fish ($52) The bbq shrimp was also great, nice app and well cooked, spice level was perfect for me $18 Gumbo had lots of seafood and a nice kick, not my favorite but appreciated that it came with crab ($25?) Salad was forgettable and not pictured. We had been trying to get into Communion for so long and at long last we were able to. Our reservation was scheduled a day or two after the NYT wrote about it and you better believe it was BUSY, easily the busiest restaurant I've been in since the start of the pandemic. The service was great here but I will say things take a long time. That is not a knock on the servers or chefs in any way but just helpful info to know as since it is so hard to get into, you want to be hungry when you arrive but don't be too hungry as the food, including the appetizers, does not come out fast. For my drink I had my eyes set on the nearest green apple but sadly they were out of an ingredient in it so I got the Kinfolk which was very good, not too sweet but still I was a little bummed that I was unable to get the apple mint julep. We ordered the sautéed clams and mussels to start and honestly, this was my favorite dish of the whole meal. It was sensational. The lemongrass overtones came through, the clams and mussels were cooked to perfection and not too chewy and we literally consumed every last drop of the delicious coconut milk sauce. We ordered way too much food and this included the neckbone stew, the creole catfish and grits, the mac & cheese and the fried cabbage. Of these 4 the 2 that stood out to be were the catfish and the cabbage. The stew was good but not my favorite dish of the evening and I'm not sure exactly what cheese was in the mac but for me it was just okay. The Catfish however was phenomenal. The grits were cooked to perfection and I loved what the parmesan added and the crispness of the catfish was such a nice contrast with the rest of the dish, I strongly recommend ordering this. We were torn between getting the cabbage or the greens for our veggie side but I have no regrets about choosing the cabbage as it was some of the best cabbage I've ever had, at $6 there is no reason not to try it. For dessert we got the peach cobbla, we were full at this point but I love peaches and didn't wanna miss a chance on getting them one last time before summer leaves us for the year. It was bomb and the sage ice cream that complimented it was a nice touch. If you can get a reservation here I strongly recommend doing it as some of the food is really great. read more

What a refreshing place to go! In a sea of ethnic eats is COMMUNION, and it's located on Union! Haha Everything about this restaurant speaks to the cultural offerings of Southern food with a twist! If there's anything my husband and I love going to experience, it's places like these - authentic, creative, and experiential. We lucked out and snagged a reservation on a Wednesday a week before, and sat at their outdoor patio. There are separate reservation options for indoor and outdoor so look carefully when you book. The outdoor patio is nicely covered and also has heated lamps, so there is no issue with cooler temperatures if you're sensitive to that. On our journey, we tried their smoked brisket pho, smoked Berbere chicken, shrimp toast, and Creole green beans. They all complemented each other well flavor wise, and our favorites were the chicken and green beans. We were surprised how good they were, and expected to gravitate towards the pho and shrimp toast. The pho would have been a stronger dish if there was more broth. It's fun that they bring the bowl and broth out and pour from a tea pot. The noodles were also overcooked and the spare ribs needed to be cooked longer so it was tender. However, the flavor of the broth was deep and flavorful - just wish we could have tasted more of it. Shrimp toast was good, just not enough value for the price. On the flip side, the chicken and green beans were off the charts good. Portions and quality were on point. Those lentils under the chicken were the perfect canvas to absorb the flavors and provide a nice plant-based protein to the dish. We never thought green beans would shine so well, but they did here. It's definitely worth getting. A table of ladies not far from us recommended it to us, and we're so glad that we ordered it! Service was jovial, attentive, and accommodating. Prices were pretty good overall considering the quality and the unique cuisine. It's definitely not a cheap place, rather one you come every few months. With such a great evening and experience, we'll be back to try their brunch menu. This part of Central District in Seattle is a beacon of light, so recommend you try this place out! read more

We visited Communion for dinner with a reservation, and I was definitely excited after hearing a lot of hype! Everything we ordered was delicious, and the ambiance was lively. Despite it being packed at 5pm, the food came out surprisingly quickly. Shrimp Toast: loved this twist using foccacia! Though pricey, I think this is a pretty unique item, so would recommend! Unc's Wings: well-executed wings and flavorful enough that hot sauce isn't necessary! Mac & Cheese: your classic casserole-style mac, delicious and filling but not mindblowing Jambalaya: not short on spice, I loved this! Pork Chop: really tender and flavorful for a bone-in pork chop Peach Cobbler: also a classic, and a nice way to top off this huge meal, but could be skipped I was really interested in the Bayou Teche, but they unfortunately ran out right after we ordered. Regardless, their menu rotates a lot so I'm sure there's always something new to try! We were unluckily seated outside right next to the front door, so despite there being heaters, it was still pretty chilly on a rainy, windy day. We had a party of six and order just about everything on the menu-- taste wise, I'd give them a 3.5. Like I said though, not bad food weee just used to our flavors. What I loved the most was that the staff gave us a run down on what their soul food consisted of. The interior was quaint, and we absolutely loved it! I'd recommend getting there like right as they open as they seem to be pretty popular. The sweet was not good.. haha. Again, I'm used to my sweet tea being 40% tea and 60% sugar. There's is not as sweet as expected. For a party of six, our total was a little short of $400. However, we did order two orders of wings Togo because those weee good!! They have a little bit of spice to them too. There's a reason Conde Nast has listed them as one of the top 21 new restaurants in the world!! Service = 5+ stars. Ambiance/decor = 5 stars. Food = 5+ stars. They have proven that community oriented dinners outside and using compostable dishware/flatware can be an ideal dining experience. One does not require cloth napkins and a bougie setup to experience an outstanding meal. There's a QR code on each table where you can place your order when you're ready, and you put your card on file with the ability to checkout immediately or to leave your tab open to add to - a completely paperless/contactless experience that makes for a streamlined payment process. I have to give a shout-out to their entire staff for being the most genuinely nice and helpful people I think I've seen as a whole in any restaurant in Seattle. These are the kinds of folks who I want to be friends with - no Seattle freeze here. The food was seasoned and presented beautifully - every dish, every time. I think everyone at our table agreed the okra was next level - probably best ever. The beet fritters were not what I expected at all - they completely took me by surprise and were a memorable standout dish. The kale caesar was hearty and healthy, with homemade cornbread croutons (a nice touch to give this salad some nice juxtaposition). The corn soup was a must try - even on a 70+ degree sunny day! I loved the sweet potato chips on top for some crunch instead of saltines or oyster crackers - this was inventive and complementary to the flavors and textures in this soup. The BBQ shrimp and grits are a staple of any good Southern cuisine and this generous helping was good - albeit not my favorite dish of the night. Mine was slightly bitter and could have used some brown sugar/or honey to take that down a notch. I didn't try the roast chicken but it was another generous helping and the others at the table seemed to enjoy. Lastly the mac n cheese was probably the best restaurant mac n cheese I've ever had. I loved that they threw down some green onions over the top to give this side a little something extra - I love green onions on everything! The restrooms are a little bit far away and cumbersome to get to but it gives you an excuse to see the beautiful decor inside the restaurant (as all seating is outdoors, currently). I can't wait until I can return and dine inside. This building has such good bones and I'm so excited for Communion's future here. We enjoyed the wonderful experience all around. My husband and I drove from Tacoma to order. The order was placed online. They were prompt, and we drove back home since we'd been in the Seattle area most of the day before the restaurant opened. The food kept well on the drive home; nothing was soggy or leaking. We ordered a variety of things since we don't live close to the restaurant. The prices are great. We got 7 items for less than $100. I LOVE the grilled okra and banana pudding. The catfish tasted fresh (I'm from the South where catfish was in abundance and always fresh for breakfast at my great grandma's house), and the wings had good flavor. The shrimp and grits was a bit "gourmet" (read bland) for my liking, but the flavors we're well-mixed and not over powering. I'd go back if only for the banana pudding. And I want to try more things. While at Nordstrom's Creed consultant Anthony highly recommended we have dinner at Communion. He was born and raised in the area and gave us the back story of his community, and how Communion Restaurant encompasses the past, and present story of the community. Everything Anthony said about Communion was spot on, my husband and I ordered take out because of the limiting outdoor seating (call ahead to make a reservation.) While we waited we were able to sit, enjoy the sunshine, and get a sense of the community. I greatly appreciated the time the Communion servers took time to talk about the menu and restaurant to all of the guests. The menu is also very unique as each selection has a story of why the owner added to the menu; I felt like I had a glimpse of her family. Each item we ordered was delicious and had unique seasoning combinations. My husband can't stop talking about how perfectly the wings were with watermelon hot sauce; he plans to order again today! If you enjoy and can do so safely definitely order one of the signature cocktails (I can't but my husband said the Kinfolk & Papi Chulo were great!!) The food was amazing. Soul food with a southeast Asian twist. We started with the deviled eggs. Tasty but not my favorite but an egg lover delight. Greens were seasoned perfectly, Mac and cheese made with Gruyère cheese totally on point. Wish the sweet potato cornbread was larger it was simply delicious. The butter basted cabbage was out of this world. That could have an entree on its own. The cat fish and gumbo, nice potions for a table of four the gumbo had a nice kick, crab, shrimp, sausage and Asian shrimp with Chinese donuts to dip into the delectable broth. The chicken stew was amazing. Chicken moist and flavorful the sauce flavorful. Hey cocktail vodka and ginger beer was smooth served in a cute bottle to pour as needed. Service was awesome. Let me just say this, the food that we ordered was good but I was a little disappointed that they ran out of chicken when the bartender told me they had 1 more left. I settled for an appetizer of chicken wings; Mac and cheese and a couple of drinks. While I was eating my macaroni I noticed there was some hair in my food! I informed the bartended and she took it off the bill but a replacement was not offered as such. I probably wouldn't go back again though. I've been wanting to try Communion for months and we finally made it for our anniversary. I was so excited! Sadly, the food ranged from good to ok. Most of the dishes just didn't hit. Food came out slow and was either bland or unbalanced. The interiors are gorgeous and the music was great. Cocktails were delicious. The true deal breaker was the service. Service was cold and unwelcoming - they did not seem to want to be there or to want us there. It felt like food was unceremoniously dropped on the table by our server. Drinks arrived well after appetizers. We were not able to get a reservation until the end of the night so maybe the server was tired? In any event, we will not be back. Fried chicken: 5/5. Perfectly salty, in my opinion. I was expecting something slightly crispier. Purple-ish drank: 5/5. This pre-made drink contains a lot of volume for the price. It's not too sweet. Seafood gumbo: 4.5/5. Well spiced. I love the addition of the greens and Chinese doughnut to give the dish an unexpected attitude. This was a little saltier than I would have liked. My weekends plans changed, and for the better! My cousin couldn't make her reservation, which She passed onto me. I've been trying to book a reservation for as long as I can remmeber, but never found a good time or date. This is a great Saturday date night! I do want to preface, that if you're looking to grab dinner here in between other events, I don't recommend. This is definitely a place that you sit and enjoy your company, enjoy the delicious foods, and a nice night out. I did my due diligence of checking the menu earlier that day, so that I would not sit there and have our server come back, which was in my favor! They were so busy, our server came by a handful of times as he was also the bartender. So to make sure you're not waiting on your server, and you're indecisive like me, check the menu before, so when your server comes, they can take your order. We got the fried chicken appetizer, which had a black pepper seasoning. Crispy skin and juicy on the inside! We also got the jambalaya, Mac n cheese, and ginger chicken. They were all so delicious!! Tbh I also wanted catfish, but that may have been on the brunch menu. The jambalaya was a smaller portion than the ginger chicken if you're looking at portion size. But damn the jambalaya was literally so flavorful and when I stole a couple pieces of ginger chicken, it tasted amazing together. Now the Mac n cheese, my boyfriend is from the south and says yes, definitely something his family would cook, minus the garnishes. There were folks next to us that were fucking up some pork chops that looked delicious. The portion size were bigger than the jambalaya, FYI. Also the cornbread was big! So if you could for real eat and you like cornbread, I suggest you get as well. I wanted the full experience and as a true foodie, I had to get a dessert. **4 Star Upgrade due to excellent service** Hate to say it, but our experience didn't live up to the hype. I do plan to try again, and will order differently next time to give Communion a fair chance. Service was fantastic, so I can't dock them for that-- but what we ordered was a bit of a miss overall. Maybe brunch is the move? At this point it doesn't seem too difficult to get a reservation if you're diligent when reservations open up, or if you monitor their openings regularly as there seem to be cancellations or spots that open up. They also allow walk-ins which we saw get seated after a bit of a wait. Grabbed street parking just down the street and checked in with the host a little early for our reservation and got seated after a short wait. We got a very small table near the kitchen which wasn't ideal for a hot August evening. Our server was exceptionally friendly and helpful when ordering drinks/food and was really diligent about checking on us. The restaurant was packed and had really great energy and vibes overall- everyone having a great time. I'll run through our order as follows: -Hood Sushi: Soggy sushi rice with dry catfish, flavors were decent but the mouthfeel was mushy and didn't come together well. -Unc's Fried Chicken Wings: These were good, but tasted a lot better as a leftover reheated in the toaster at home. -Gumbo Pho: Not worth the price. The okra was delicious, the broth and presentation was great, but didn't really make sense as a homage to pho or gumbo. Another one that was oddly better as a leftover.. the flavors came together with some time? -Buttery Cornbread: Dry and not buttery. Reheated and sliced this up at home and enjoyed with homemade hot honey butter. I think i'll have to come back for brunch, because that menu is calling to me. Our experience didn't start off on the right foot. I tried to call after ordering a few times to find out if there was curbside pick up (there is) but despite three calls no one picked up the phone. We arrived at the restaurant fifteen minutes before our order was due ($150 worth of items) and they mentioned it would be only five minutes. After 20 minutes they realized they had given our order to the wrong person and remade it (they were kind to give complementary chocolates and a black bean hummus spread) but my husband was in a grouchy mood leaving 40 minutes after our original order should have been completed. When we got home, we realized why the takeout queue was so long. The food was amazing. It was a wee bit too spicy at times for our youngest child but our favorite dish by far was the catfish po me--not overly greasy and delightfully seasoned. We also loved the grilled okra, the salmon croquettes (with the pickled cabbage), and shrimp and grits (messy to eat but so good). My husband loved the chicken pho but I didn't enjoy it as much. 4.5 stars! Excellent food in the CD! They just opened up And i wanted to see what all the buzz was about! Stuff tried: Root vegetable fritters: in this case beets. I am normally not a huge fan of beets but these were delicious! The garlicky aioli dipping sauce was perfect! Assorted jojos: these were fingerling potatoes and sweet potatoes! So good and great for dipping into things Oh geez dip: who knew you could make garlicky hummus from black eyed peas? So good for dipping jojos into! Roasted corn chowder: wow this was delicious! So rich with lots of sweet corn! Its hard to believe there is no cream in here. Greens: in this case i think mustard or collard greens with lots of onions as well. Slow cooked but not mushy at all. Fried oyster mushroom po'mi: love the play on 'bahn mi' and 'po boy'. Two great kinds of sandwiches! The fried oyster mushroom are great flavor in a sandwich! Get this! Food was more 3.5 stars while service was 4 stars. I'll give it 4 stars to be generous. I was excited to hear so much about this place and a unique soul food concept in Seattle. However I think expectations have to be reasonable when you dine here. This place has gotten so much hype nationwide which is great. But I honestly think if you go in with normal expectations then you'll have a more enjoyable experience. I finally got a reservation here that worked for us. Before dinner started I got a text literally 5 minutes before our reservation at 4Pm that they were short staffed and had to push our reservation back 30 min. That's fine but why are you telling me this 5 minutes before?! My husband works in the restaurant industry. There's no way suddenly 5 minutes before restaurant opening they realized they didn't have enough staff...given that I had my toddler with me I was SUPER annoyed to have to sit outside with my toddler for 30 min. As I was waiting outside I realized they didn't even text other ppl with reservations at 4:15 so a bunch of ppl were showing up, trying to open the door and getting confused when it was locked. I was the one that had to tell them "they're opening 30 min late today" please notify your guests earlier about this. I could have stayed at home and spent the extra 30 min chilling in the comfort of my living room vs sitting on a chair on the sidewalk. Alright so we finally got in and sat down to eat. Ordered the hood sushi, fried chicken, shrimp toast, jimbalaya, mac and cheese, and cornbread. And the bread pudding to go. Standouts- shrimp toast (my favorite of the meal) and fried chicken Good- Mac and cheese. Bread pudding. Meh- jimbalaya (kinda dry and weird texture) and hood sushi (this was also dry and bland- literally just catfish in a sushi roll) Downright avoid- cornbread (my god- one of the driest cornbread I've tasted in my life. So crumbly. So disappointing for a soul food restaurant) Overall my impression is this a good spot. It's unique and above average for seattles dining scene. Is it really one of the top new restaurants in the country? No. Is it overhyped? Yes a bit. I did enjoy the service (besides the 5 minute warning fiasco). The restaurant is definitely not child friendly- no high chairs. We still brought our toddler along with our own booster seat bc I'm a diehard foodie and my toddler thankfully is pretty well behaved at restaurants. Everyone at the restaurant was so nice and kind to my child. Playing with her. Interacting with her. It was awesome. The environment is super friendly and warm. Overall it's definitely a must try at least once if you live in Seattle but I'm not sure if it's a place I'd visit over and over again. read more

Really cute venue and interesting menu but overall I don't think the food was worth the price for me. I appreciate they have rotating items, but nothing that I ordered stood out in terms of flavor or uniqueness. Listen! I am all about Family owned small businesses. And this is also a black owned business. When the opportunity arises, I support! Visiting Seattle was no exception, it was recommended by a friend and local. So off we went on Sunday morning. We arrived in the area at about 10:15, it took us another 15 minutes of driving around to fund parking. Beware! Once the debacle with parking was done, we had to stand in line and yes there was a line. So be mindful of that as well. My friend had said there were no reservations hence the line, but we quickly discovered there was indeed reservations as they was a large party being seated ahead of those of us in the line. I was getting a bit concerned for the wait as we were still waiting by 11 and had to be at the airportby 1:30pm. I do think they opened at 11am, I never confirmed. Once we were seated, things moved pretty seamlessly. The owner came over to day hello. I think her son waited on us. The food was extremely flavorful, pleasing to the eyes and perfect portions to share. It was worth the long wait in the cold. I got to enjoy really good food over amazing conversations with my best friends! So I would recommend for a girls brunch, good for any group of friends, date brunch, family brunch.
