Having lived just a few blocks away from the Congee Noodle House and drooled over the yummy looking hanging meat everytime I waited for the bus out front. It was only when I met my boyfriend (husband now) did I actually go in. Since that day years ago, I crave wonton soup and soya sauce chicken on a regular basis. Since my first few visits, I have expanded my Congee Noodle items to include congee, various rice and noodle dishes and have tried all of the delectable meats that continue to hang in the front window for all the people waiting for the bus to look at. I would say that is pretty safe to try just about anything at the Noodle house. Solid 4 stars for Chinese food. My brother and I were in the are, so I treated him out for lunch here. I don't like eating Congee at home, but damn their Congee is good. My brother ordered the pork liver Congee. The liver was cooked right and wasn't too chewie. Lots of large slices of liver. Their honey moon fried rice was okay nothing to rave about. Went here on a whim with family. Parking here is a bit annoying. There's parking in the back but it's a small lot and usually very packed. Street parking is paid and I believe there may be some sort of time restriction in the front. Service is meh. They just took the order, dropped off the orders and that was that but I guess that's just expected. The congee here is decent, the rice rolls aren't bad. I got the sliced beef and scrambled egg dish with fried rice. It was pretty gooooddd. This place is decent. Def better than Congee Noodle King. Pricing is average. Had a poop of day? (You know, one of those days where you really feel like you wanna kick someone in the balls.) Then come eat at the Congee Noodle House and feel like a brand new woman! Well, at least I always do after I gorge myself on all the goodies here. It aint' fancy pancy, but it sure hits the spot. Their Wontons are the real deal, full wholesome shrimp balls wrapped in the thinnest, softest silky wrap. Get the Wontons with the Egg Noodles - you wont regret it, their noodles are the fresh quality, chewy kind. They aren't called a "Noodle House" for nothing. As for the Congee, they live up to that part of the name too. They serve a fantastic Seabass and Cilantro Congee, which isn't the most Ocean Wise friendly, but since it's already there, I think it would be worse to waste it and not eat it at all. All that being said, for the more environmentally friendly and vegetarian folks around here, the simple, Plain Congee is absolutely devine. I'll get a Plain Congee with a Chinese Donut on any given day, and I swear you could finally shut me the heck up for at least 15 minutes of silent bliss while I savour the sheer comfort. Their BBQ Meat options are the NOMS, everything else is also just darn good. From morning to late night delights, these guys got simply good everyday Chinese food covered. Their blaring flaw is bad service. I know Chinese restaurants are not known to have a good service system but I can't remember the last time I was at a place as rude as this. Example: we called a server to place another order and she put up her hand in a "stop" gesture, said "wait" and never came back. The food is better than their service however. The chicken wings are a must try! They're not your classic salt and pepper chicken wings. I heard they were coated in egg yolk - weird but very yum! This was not the most authentic Chinese food I've had but they do serve a good combo deal where you can pick your own 2-3 dishes + rice. It's great for big parties, quite spacious with lots of large tables. There's also free parking at the back of the restaurant so you don't have to do pay parking on the street. read more

Stopped into The Congee Noodle House for a little late night nosh with my sweetheart. I am a sucker for BBQ anything, and so is he so we opted for BBQ Pork on White Rice. Pretty standard unadventurous fare, and it was exactly that. Not amazing, not awful. Just somewhere in between. The pork was somewhat dry, not as juicy and delicious as the amazing pork they serve at my favorite spot in Steveston - Danny's Wonton House. This is the sister company of Congee Noodle King. The area feels sketchy. There have been shootings at this location in the past so I'm leery about this location. I think the food at congee noodle king is much better. The menu items are very similar but the food isn't as good here. A perfect example is the simple wonton noodle. This place is good! I keep expecting that its not and it always keeps surprising me. I've been here a couple times for sit in meals and for take out. Take out is fast and efficient. I call about 10 minutes before I want my food and they'll have it ready and bagged up by the time I get there. I've been there for their afternoon tea served very HK style. You order some food and get a drink as well all for the delicious price of $7 - $8 dollars. I tried their stir fried beef with vermicelli. Its normally made with ho fun, but I liked vermicelli better. I was surprised that the vermicelli was very tender as the noodle itself requires some soaking in water before its cooked. I was really impressed. The portions are huge as well. For my drink I got the HK style milk tea and it was decent. I've also tried their congee which is quite good. This is saying a lot considering I really don't like congee - only when I'm sick and usually only my grandma's congee. I just wish it had a bit more flavour, but a little salt helped. With it I got some chinese doughnuts wrapped in rice paper. It came with some hoi sin sauce and soy sauce. This was delicious! All in all, I've been consistently happy with the food and service here. Congee House (aka jook gnook) is pretty close to being a staple in my life...it would not be an exaggeration that I've had my bum in one of their seats at every time of day, from the morning breakfast menu of congee and small dishes right through the lunch/dinner rushes then to late night snacks. From picking up plain congee for an ill sweetheart to family dinners to numerous meals with friends who all love it, I can count on this place! Expectations of the level of service have to be dialed down to minimal. I agree that once you've ordered your food, you are largely on your own. That said, all it takes is a wave and someone will tend to your request. It's pretty no-frills and if you are alright with that and prepared, it won't bother you. I've noticed that there isn't a lot of turnover in the serving staff and host/ess so management must not be too horrendous. If I'm not in the mood for the challenges of the service, I get takeout. Please note that it is cash only. On to the real reason I come here, the comforting, tasty food.... My most frequently ordered items are: -sliced beef or sliced fish congee (topped with ginger, green onions and peanuts) -a Chinese donut for dipping in the congee -sliced beef and vegetable rice noodle ("sup chow" or wet fry with bok choy) -egg white and dried scallop fried rice -shrimp rice roll Other great selections (not less tasty than items in previous list...I'm just slightly less addicted to them): -pea tips with garlic -deep fried tofu -house special chow mein -roast duck -wonton soup (super "snappy" shrimp, nice fresh egg noodles) -steamed rice roll with Chinese donut -sweet Chinese donut -BBQ duck with rice noodles in soup -blanched beef tripe with rice noodles in soup -soy chicken I've also noticed groups of 4+ ordering from the chef's special menu, which includes soup, rice and dessert for the group. This is a great restaurant for bang for your buck. They consistently offer the lowest prices in town! (and no, I'm not trying to sell you a bed)... Their staple is congee or wonton noodle, and it's what i order 90% of the time I go here. I've been here around 30 times and the ingredients they use have been good and fresh EXCEPT for this one time when I ordered congee chicken and the chicken tasted noticably stale. Their congee has never failed me. I usually go for the fish congee or the regular pork and century egg congee. I've had their other dishes before (wonton, bbq items, fried rice, noodles etc.) but I've never really been wowed by it. It wasn't horrible or anything but I think it's because I live in Richmond and with easy access to good bbq pork (BBQ Master under Superstore) and noodle/rice dishes that it just...tasted like regular Chinese food. I suppose that's a good thing. (I'm currently going back and forth deciding if I should give 3 or 4 stars.) Having said that, it's nice to see a place like Congee Noodle House in such a central location in Vancouver. Parking here is always a drag. They do have a back lot but its super tiny. Siu Op Jok! Siu Op Jok! So, they have really excellent roast duck congee. I just had it this morning and I'm still feeling fine from it. Congee Noodle House's name advertises exactly what they are. Their congee (jok) is always perfectly done. Not watery, not lumpy, just perfect. Coming from Seattle where I often settle for pretty-good jok, it's always a treat to sit down to perfect jok here. Word to the wise, trying to finish an entire bowl of rice soup on your own can be tricksy business, as the Boy found out, especially if you ate a hamburger less than 2 hours prior. In addition, if you order a chinese donut to go with it, those babies expand with all the water you're pouring into your stomach. Came here because I was on what felt like Day 193843 of my mostly-liquid diet (not willingly). The Boy wanted the most adventurous looking congee on the menu, so he got the "assorted meats": heart, liver, kidney, stomach, and meatballs. I had the sliced fish (gotta keep it light, y'know?) The congee was pretty good, pretty smooth, maybe not as thick as I'd like but not too bad. There was a decent amount of fish in mine. The Boy seemed to be fishing out lots of random cow organs to eat so I guess he had a lot of fillings in his, too. We probably could have gone without the donut, it tasted a little overfried to me, and then we could have gotten our bill to squeak under $15 for two people. read more

Comfort food is best way to describe this place. Their speciality is congee, for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or late night snack. Piping hot, and flavourful . Be sure to order the Chinese donuts , the salty crispy texture and taste is perfect accompaniment to the smooth congee. Only put a couple in at time into the congee, otherwise they get really soggy. . I love to add some soy sauce and hot sauce I also. My favourite is the ostrich, fish or 100 year old egg (acquired taste ) I like to order the gailan (Chinese brocoli ) with oyster sauce to make a full meal. The service is excellent in Chinese restaurant standards. They give you your tea, ready to take your order, keep topping up your tea ,clear your plates and give your bill. My first time visiting and I will be back! Loved the congee - thick and creamy, full of flavor ... yum. Came on a Friday night around 6pm just as it was becoming busy. The restaurant is much larger than I expected, with most tables being round and seating 6 people each. Only a very small number of two or four person tables. One Yelper noted a perceived preference for seating asians before non-asians, and I have to comment on this as I think it may be a misunderstanding. The restaurant gets very busy and we (1 asian, 1 caucasian) waited in line. There were asian couples/groups seated before us who actually arrived after us. HOWEVER, it's because the asian groups were asked (in Cantonese) if they would be ok sitting at a table with other people. Since the tables are so large, they often sit multiple groups together to maximize space. I think it's more common in asian custom to share tables, while for stodgy white guys like me who wish to wait longer for their own table ;-) They likely have learned to avoid asking non-asian couples their preference and just assume they want their own table. Regardless, the restaurant is large, clean and brightly lit. The service is also quick. Typical to many Chinese restaurants, you'll want to raise a hand to get a service person's attention to place your order or get the bill. My mouth watered as I watched beautiful dishes of roast meat, spicy fried pork chops, and steaming bowls of congee pass our table. I can hardly wait to return and try more. read more

I've been going here for years and I will continue to go for many more years. Their Congee is by far the best in the city. I base this on texture. Congee otherwise doesn't have much flavor and it's not supposed to. It's made in it's purest form then complimented with meats or vegetables and seasoned as you like it. What happened to one of our fave Congee restaurants? It has gone downhill big time. We used to frequent it at least once/month because we lived in the 'hood. Now that we live downtown, today was a one off & it was AWFUL. We had the sliced fish congee which was 'ok' - quite watery & no umami when it came to the flavour. We made the mistake of ordering the salty fried donuts - please DO NOT BOTHER. They were the worst I have ever tasted in my life, I ate one & my partner ate the rest because they don't like to waste money. Tasted like they were deep fried yesterday & then microwave heated to serve lukewarm. We also had the deep fried spicy tofu, which was a strange dark brown colour. It also seemed like it had been pre deep fried & then deep fried again. The worst deep fried spicy tofu I have ever had the displeasure of eating. Service is awful, ambience - well, I don't go there for ambience. Food was a -10 for me. Will not be back, which is sad as it used to be one of my fave restaurants in that neighbourhood. read more

When we arrived we were asked if we want to share a table with another family. They had plenty of tables that were free but I suspected they wanted to ensure that there was space for others. One seated, a server will never come to you unless you make them. Finally what we ordered was not what arrived, and it will take longer than expected to get food to your table. This place is a true greasy spoon/hole in the wall Chinese late night Chinese food spot. Very Authentic, CASH ONLY. You also pay for what you get when it comes to service and ambience. We were a party of 4 and only 3/4 ordered showed up to the table. I asked 3 times about my order and tit just never showed up, and when we asked for the check the server asked if we still wanted the food we said no so they took it off the bill. I mean we orders off the late night special menu (X. O. With pork jowl and string beans) I mean the late night menu sounded good but it was never meant to be mine. The level of mistreatment that this restaurant gives to non Chinese patrons is unbelievable. I have frequented this restaurant over the last couple of weeks because the weather has been good and it gives me a chance to walk during my lunch break. I went to the restaurant today around 11 am. The place only had 4-5 tables occupied. Not busy. I walked over to the counter and waited for one of the staff to direct me to a seat. Several of them looked at me and continued to collect dishes from the table or some other thing, aka completely ignore me. I just waited. Then a Chinese patron comes up behind me. Not only does the staff members begin talking to them in Chinese, they begin to: -sit him down -pour him tea -give him a menu -take his order When all this was done. I finally say to her "table for one". It was then that I was finally seated. I really should have walked away there and then, but I felt that it would have been too dramatic and I had already waited so long. I am never going back to this place. My family will never be visiting this place. To the staff at the restaurant who ignored me : You guys are assholes and should show more respect and consideration to customers who are also PEOPLE with feelings. To the patron that was behind me who was served first AND didn't say anything to the staff that I was ahead of him: You're a piece of shit too. The food is mediocre 75% of the time. This is the place to go to for some excellent wonton noodles and congee. Portions are large and prices are quite reasonable. Even better, it's open late! There's plenty of seating here. The service can be hit or miss. I suggest paying at the counter to speed the process along. Word of advice though - be careful with your belongings. While doing some field work in that area, my manager for that particular assignment decided to drive us all (there were four of us) to this place for lunch. As I was allowed to re-introduce chicken into my diet, I ordered the Chicken in Black Bean Sauce, which was part of the $6.95 lunch menu (served with typically gluten-free vermicelli noodles). My dish arrived fresh and hot. The presentation was beautiful too with the different-colored pepper chunks. Great balance of flavors and I ate the whole dish up (I hate taking home doggie bags so I rather eat the whole thing up than deal with leftovers). Service was relatively quick and efficient. Their congee is fantastic and I always come grab some when I'm feeling under the weather. They are generous with their ingredients and I always feel soo much better after having a bowl. Their noodles and fried rices are yummy, I love the bbq pork on rice, the rice rolls and their pork blood dish. After 9:30 pm you can order even cheaper small dishes to go with plain congee. We had the sweet and sour soup, guy-lan (green vegetables) honey garlic pork, seafood fried rice which was really moist and tasty along with seafood chow mein which was better here than most restaurants. One of the best congee places in Vancouver, no doubt. Service is fast and efficient. You don't go to these kinds of Chinese restaurants for good service though, so don't expect it. Other fave dishes include slippery beef with egg "hor fun" and any greens with stir-fried garlic - delish! Can't go wrong with noodle soups like the good ol' wonton. I'm really looking forward to coming here again. Its best to come slightly before lunch or after to avoid lineups. I've had the congee here and it really is quite decent. Its the real thing and comparable to a respectable bowl of congee in hong kong. I noticed some guys eating crabs and it looked good but expensive, but could be worthwhile. On my last visit, I had the sei-boh-fan, basically four types of bbq meat on rice with a salted egg. It was good. The salted egg is just like I remembered it from hong kong and the roast pork (siu yuk) and bbq pork (char siu) were both delicious, particularly the roast pork which had extremely crispy. My only complaint is that the ginger sauce for the chicken, which I normally spread on my rice, was a little bland. Gai Lan was decent, it came a little cold. I liked it. We had chow mein, dumplings and something that resembled a gelatinous roll with a scant filling of ground something with green onion and tons of oil. I could live without seeing this let alone eating it again. There was really nothing there flavour wise unless you like rice paste or super overcooked pasta swimming in cheap oil and soft green onion. We also had roasted pork and duck which hit the right spot. I loved the Congee and I believe its a great lunch option and a complete and healthy meal. Congee lover visiting Vancouver, rejoice! This dated-looking joint in working-class East Broadway delivers arguably the best Hong Kong style congee I have had outside the former British colony. Specifically, the Lai Wan Sampan congee is a beautiful thing. Loaded with true-to-its-origin ingredients (squid, minced beef, pork stomach, pork skin, peanuts) in a perfectly seasoned (Not MSG-heavy) & textured rice porridge, it is the ultimate Cantonese comfort food on a wintry morning. Sadly, the steamed rice noodles wrapped with doughnut stick that I also ordered arrived in room temperature and tasted a day late. No, it is only the congee that is praiseworthy here. This place is not bad, but neither it is good. I come here sometimes with my mom for a bowl of congee, and flat noodles. This place is expensive, and so over hyped for no reason. This place is ALWAYS packed during lunch, and the parking in the area is ridiculous. The congee here is mediocre. I do say that there are ALWAYS tons of ingredients in the bowl though. Each bowl I always get large pieces of meat, and a lot too. Maybe that is why people come here? But the congee itself is so thin and light. I don't like it. I always say that the basic has to be good to have great results. Their soup/congee is not up to par. Their flat noodles are always drenched in sauces, you can barely taste the rice flavour in the flat noodles, and the amount of sodium used for each dish is just UGH. I can't give this place a bad mark, because their service is fast though. Every time I come they are always fast in getting you a seat, and fast in getting orders and tea and leaving.
