Brake / Rotor replacement, a one hour job

Quoted 1000 dollars for a brake job. Tried to scare my wife during an oil change - said that it was unsafe to drive home. Curious - are you replacing all 4 corners on an Outback with Baer brake calipers (not). Because that's the only thing that justifies a cool grand for 200 dollars worth of parts and an hour of labor. I'll do it myself instead. Pads and rotors are under 200 bucks. I dare you (lurking continental manager) to come back on here and tell me that calipers must be replaced too. What a joke. Stop using fear and outrageous labor to create profits. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

The "new" parts they magically installed in my car before they actually received said parts.

In 2019, I bought a brand new outback from this dealership with 9 miles on it. Currently, it is still under warranty. (I even gave them a 5 star review for the sale) Around June, I noticed a strong shaking when I started the engine. After a 6 hour diagnostic, Continental Subaru's service dept told me that I needed a new air compressor, new cabin air filter and oil change. They politely asked me to wait another 2 hours to "get it all taken care of together". When I went to pay, they told me they only did the oil change and ordered the parts for the air compressor. Basically, I waited 6 hours for an oil change and overpriced cabin filter that day. I came back the following week and waited another 6 hours to install my new air compressor. 5 mins after driving off the lot (at the Tudor intersection), there is a loud banging under the hood. The A/C belt had frayed and snapped apart into 3 pieces. Refrigerant had completely leaked out of the car and now the car is shaking and hissing. I drove it back and the service manager was extremely rude trying to convince me that somehow this was my fault and the belt was just a little loose and "it happens all the time". Umm...I may not know a lot about cars, but there is a 5 inch broken section of belt sticking to the underside of the hood. I would not consider that "loose". It is broken. Hours later, I'm informed they need to talk to the mechanic who originally diagnosed the problem but he was on vacation and I would have to come back in another week. I had to leave my car there for another week because now "it is no longer safe to drive". A week later, they call to say "Your A/C is running super cold and we put in brand new parts. Everything is covered under warranty. You're good to go! " he even apologized for the hassle. I was not convinced , but eager to get the hell out of there. 30 mins after driving off the lot, the car starts to shake again. Nope. Not going back. Terrified of going back and having them break something else, I drove home and decided to find another mechanic. Yesterday, a lady from Continental Subaru called to tell me "your parts just arrived". Me: "...you mean the same parts that were already installed 2 weeks ago?"

DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR HERE! In the fall of 2019 I took my 2009 Subaru Forester into Continental Subaru for basic maintenance and they told me that I needed to have my head gaskets replaced. They quoted me approximately $2,300.00 for the head gaskets, timing belt and water pump. A few weeks after I dropped it off they call me and tell me that one of the heads is cracked??? and that it needs to be re surfaced and now my bill is approximately $3,800.00. I have no problem paying a shop to do the work I requested! My issue started approximately 4,000 miles after it left their shop, the engine seized. So I had to have it towed over 300 miles(so expensive) to a different Subaru dealer and the service manager there told me that the work that Continental Subaru did on my car was negligent and that I ought to file a lawsuit against them to recover my losses. My attempts to contact~ANYONE~here about the blown engine were basically pointless and I was told to stop trying to contact them. I got multiple opinions from numerous Subaru dealer shops and Subaru corporate told me that they weren't able to help. I ultimately decided that I couldn't afford a lawyer to fight them, and I'm young I work as a wildland firefighter in the summer and a backcountry river guide in the winter so I don't even have the kind of lifestyle that affords me the free time to use my cell phone regularly let alone deal with something like this and no one should have to. So even if Continental Subaru never does what is right and warranties the work they did or pays for an engine to replace the one they ruined, maybe this review will help someone else steer very clear of them.

Unfortunately, the warranty I was sold there can only be used through their service department, and dealing with them has been an absolute nightmare for even minor repairs. Bonnie stepped in and walked me through everything with patience and professionalism. Because of her, I'm now in the process of canceling that warranty and switching to one that allows me to use Big O exclusively. That peace of mind means everything to me. I've trusted shops like Big O Auto Repair before--my last truck lasted 20 years because I had honest, reliable mechanics who did the job right the first time, never cut corners, and stood behind their work. That kind of trust is hard to find. The team at Big O is exactly that--honest, knowledgeable, and genuinely committed to taking care of both you and your vehicle. I have full confidence that with their help, my current truck will go just as far. If you're looking for a place you can trust with your vehicle, this is it.

Because Volvos, while nice, are one of the most unreliable brands of car you can buy. They are consistently in the bottom quarter for reliability whether you're looking at JD Power or Consumer reports. If you're a Volvo owner that doesn't believe me, either A) you got lucky or B) you value anecdotes over data. I was "subscribed" to a Volvo for 2 years and, fell in love. At the end of the subscription, all my payments counted towards the principle and...it just felt stupid to NOT buy it. Now, Volvo is steadily making its money back through maintenance and part costs. This is a 2019 car (XC40) and, already, the driver's side seat heater stopped working. Tarn and his team looked into it, ordered another heating coil and...it still wasn't working. They said I would have to go to the Volvo dealership. You could tell that he said this with sadness in his voice. I have an appointment at Volvo for October 17th, they are charging me $200+ just to DIAGNOSE the seat heater issue. My previous car, a 2006 Acura TL, had 170,000 miles on it over 11 years and never had an issue with any of its seat heaters. Tarn was able to help with my 60,000 mile brake job. The brakes were grinding and his team replaced them for an eye-watering $1,570. After doing lots of research...that seems to be the going rate, not a hideous mark-up. Insane. It took a while for Independent to get the parts. I left my car with them while I was in Fairbanks for work for a week and came back and...they still didn't have the parts. They were kind throughout the whole process and explained to me the issues. And, when they finally attempted the seat heater (that they ultimately couldn't fix, sadly.) they gave me a Volvo loaner car to use, and they didn't charge me to diagnose the issue...as the dealership already has committed to.
