Cope's Knotty Pine Cafe is all that is advertised and more! It's a no-frills, cozy restaurant with very friendly service and very generous portions of tasty homestyle cooking. My friend and I stopped by here on our way up to the Sequoias based on the reviews. We wanted something that would satisfy our craving for authentic comfort food that you couldn't really get anywhere else so we found our way here. It's a little out of the way, but there was enough parking. Stepping into the restaurant, it was bustling but we were sat relatively quickly (maybe 15 min, there was people out the door). Our server for lunch was Hailey and she was ON IT. It was like she could read our mind. For example, she preemptively asked if I wanted my tomatoes and onions on my salad on the side and would check up on us often enough where it wasn't intrusive, but helpful. I ordered the chicken fried chicken because it sounded like a dish I couldn't get anywhere else and wasn't as intimidating as the chicken fried steak which--these reviews weren't exaggerating, it literally does fill an entire dinner plate. My food came out relatively speedily based on how crowded the restaurant was for brunch and was delicious. The chicken wasn't too dry and the gravy you could tell was homemade. It wasn't too hard like some chicken-fried items can get, just the right amount of crunchy. My friend got the waffle and appreciated the fact that there is a "small appetites" part to the menu since she is a light eater. She thought the waffle was very good. Hailey then finished her excellent and friendly service by accommodating our slightly unusual packing requests. Overall, I would definitely come back to Cope's. Very disappointed when the sat us right next to the serving door and soda machine. The servers kept bumping into my chair, pouring ice from a large bucket into the soda area - there was so much noise I couldn't hear my husband sitting right next to me. I mentioned it to our waitress and she said she was sorry, the staff has requested to remove the table with no luck. Celebrating our granddaughters Cal State University Bakersfield. My husband and I had eaten here before, and they graciously accommodated a party of 16. Everybody got a little something -- mostly breakfast, but my daughter-in-law got the fish and chips. She said it was tasty. Hubby said the hot link was just like he likes it. The avocado on the California omelette was perfect. And it was just a little too crazy to go around the table but everybody had a good time. Finally decided to make the drive to try their food and let me tell you! You will not be disappointed at all! Their food is amazing the portions are pretty big. I tried their special of the day which was a hot link and shrimp Alfredo omelette and I know it sounds weird but it was sooo good!! The service was good and nice our waitress was patient with us while we looked over the menu trying to take in all the different foods. Their cobbler is amazing as well I got the blackberry one it was fresh out of the oven! Also tried the pastrami burger and it did not disappoint it had thick pieces of pastrami, however some of the veggies they gave to put it on the burger had an old fridge taste as well as the potato salad but those issues are nothing compared to how everything else tasted! This has been ago to place for a great breakfast and lunch spot if you hit it just right and it's not overflowing with diners. This time we timed it right got a seat right away. Took awhile for someone to acknowledge that we were there but once that happened we were all good. There menu is all comfort food with enormous portions. *sigh* so I opted for a grilled cheese on sourdough with fries and a dr. Pepper. My husband chose the French burger with a salad with ranch. Hi salad was brought out first and it was a nice size with dressing on the side. He said it was fine but didn't finish it. Our meals followed in a decent amount of time. Our drinks were in these I think 42oz cups so no refills needed here. My husband said the French burger head too much bread so he opted to eat it with a knife and fork. Said it tasted ok just too much bread. My grilled cheese looked like they used plastic cheese and it was dry as a bone.
