Don't get me wrong, I really like their food. However, last time I was there, I was waiting at the front. I saw one of the waitresses fondling peoples food with her bare hands. She lifted up a blueberry pancake with her bare hand, then grabbed a second pancake with her bare hand and added it to the plate. Then she was picking up pieces of watermelon from the side of fruit, again, with her bare fingers. Then she wiped her hand on her apron. This food then got served to a customer. They have good food. Generous portions, my only gripe was it was busy. Only had to wait 10 minutes to get seated. But waited 25 minutes before someone took our drink order and 45 minutes to get our food order taken. After that it was reasonable time before our food came. It was on a Sunday after church so maybe it was just too busy. I have been there before at a different time and the experience was great. I won't go there on a Sunday again. read more

We went here last week for a work lunch. I got the half sandwich with a cup of soup. It happened to be Albondigas for the soup of the day and oh em gee! That soup was FULL of flavor. Some of the best Albondigas I've ever had and I make a mean meatball soup myself! Our server was lovely and helpful. My co-worker who wasn't there had wanted an old menu item that was no longer available...she made the necessary modifications and got him something by very similar to what he was craving. The Sugar Mill is kern county staple it's been around for years and I finally got myself to break away from my usual go to breakfast spots and try some place different. I have to say it was okay not great I was kinda disappointed that the Gravy wasn't homemade it was a typical food service bag gravy although the biscuits seemed to be made in house the gravy was the bummer. The pancakes were pretty good and my wife's Chicken fried steak was pan fried but seemed to be lacking a bit of seasoning. The country potatoes were pretty delicious. In my honest opinion I'd give the food a 3.5 I decided to give it 4 stars on Yelp because the service was great the staff was friendly and attentive. Wifey and I shared two entrees. The Grilled Pork Chop entree and the Chile Verde Skillet. The pork chop tasted too dry. Would try the breaded pork chop next time. The Chile Verde was a nicer option in my opinion. Tasted pretty darn good, and the portion size was generous. The Sugar Mill has plenty of other items to try on their menu. They are Fluffy Buttery Moist Yummy Is the plate aesthetically pleasing? No. That's why they get 4 out of 5. The eggs and sausage taste decent. Staff is friendly. Clean environment. The Sugar Mill is usually busy it's one of the better sit down restaurants in Oildale. There are a number of homeless people around. The front door locks like it's been broken into a number of times. The furniture tables carpets are well worn almost trashed. The food is good the prices are reasonable and you get large portions. Most people leave with doggie bags. The fried steak looks like it is made on site and the gravy to. Im not a big gravy fan but this was good. It was a decent size and along with the sides, it was filling. My wife who is a picky eater, got the French Toast Combo and she really liked the French toast. I was surprised to see her finish off her plate! The service was good, coffee was hot and the food was good. Bill was about $30 bucks before tip. Overall, I enjoyed everything and I will be returning in the near future. I recommend trying it out. I highly recommend this restaurant. We went to Sugar Mill after a funeral and we were treated with the upmost respect. Our server Delia was a gem. She took care of our party of 30 without any issues. We were accommodated in the back to suit our needs. She knew exactly what we had ordered even when we forgot what some of us did order. Lol! Delia was attentive and caring with our elderly mother, which we appreciated very much. Now to the food...I ordered the fish and chips. I am very picky with fish because most restaurants make it really oily, however, the fish was perfect. Family members really enjoyed the avocado bacon burger, patty melt, pork chops and meatloaf just to name a few. When I return to Bakersfield I will be returning to eat there.
