This review is based solely on the chicken salad sandwich. I have been here before for a burger, and this place gets two stars for a burger. But, the chicken salad sandwich is bush-league. The chicken salad sandwich consists of deli meat sliced into thin strips mixed with some sort of mayonnaise-based dressing. This is like calling beans, ketchup, and deli-sliced roast beef chili. This type of chicken salad sandwich would be acceptable only if we just survived the big one, services are down, and we're throwing together whatever we have to make a square meal to nourish us until help arrives. After parking on the street (each quarter is 30 min) as I didn't see any lots I was so hungry my stomach was yelling at me. I saw this breakfast special for $4.20 (I forget the change amount). Why not. Cozy little place with friend waitress. The specials are on the board. I order the pancakes, 2 eggs over easy and bacon. For that price and the quality I got it was good. They even changed my $1 so I'd have quarters for the meter. No complaints here. read more

Hands down one of the best restaurants in the Bay. I will only pay to eat out here, which I drive about once a week from Orinda to do, and Benihana. I always get the two egg order over medium, with hashbrowns, bacon(ham or sausage) and toast for under $7. Sometimes I get the Western Burger, when I told the waitress no onion rings(I usually don't eat onions) she said they make the whole burger and man was she right! Delicious. Pomegranate Mimosas are a must try!! Also a man one time inappropriately touched the waitress and the owner kicked him out and asked him not to come back, just made me happy to see him sticking up for his employees as oppose to bigger places worried about losing a customer. One of my more favorite breakfast establishments, it "suffers from success" in my book... Case in point: on a Saturday morning, it is near-impossible to get a table, my coffee mug gets neglected, and the food standards suffer. Now, the service is more than friendly, the decor (a woodsy "Tahoe" styling) is outstanding, and the food - when prepared with a little less of a rush - is way above par compared to some of the other local breakfast joints. So I've been here two times in total and I have to say both times were disappointing. The most recent makes me never want to go back. First I get to the restaurant and stand at the door for over 20 mins, during that time not one employee came up to me to let me know about the wait time. Adding to the fact that I felt like my business didn't matter; the waitresses had a very sour look on they're face. We finally had to hunted down an empty booth and ordered, the food took way to long for a couple sandwiches. It was decent but at the end when it came time to pay the waitress snatched the money out of everyone's hand and went to the register. It would have been a better experience if the employees were actually nice and didn't completely hate they're job there. And finally, "Don't have lunch at a restaurant everyone tells you has great breakfast." Copper Skillet Courtyard took BF and I back to school when we popped in for a Sunday lunch. It's initially a good sign when you walk in a tiny restaurant that is PACKED - at first I thought we were out of luck for a table and would have to dine elsewhere, but lo and behold there is a hidden dining area, snarkily labeled as the 'Jury Box', up a flight of stairs that perches a handful of diners above the main action. There are 4 COZY tables up there - be prepared to get your chair bumped into and overhear conversations while waiting for the food to arrive. It can't be stated enough that the menu prices are an absolute steal, Copper Skillet is probably a contender for the most affordable restaurant in Contra Costa County! 2 sodas, an appetizer and two entrees for lunch cost $28 before tax & tip, that is pretty darn awesome! It's a shame that the food isn't on par with that level of customer pleasing, but again - I do firmly believe we screwed up big time by deciding to do lunch, even though well past noon we walked past tables of people diving into gorgeous omelets n' such. I was feeling meaty and ordered their French Dip sandwich. The menu states all sandwiches come with fries, but there are many other side options that unfortunately carry a $1 upcharge. It will forever irk me to pay more money to eat a smidge healthier, when I prefer a green salad instead of French fries. I ordered my usual blue cheese dressing, BF went for the Martinez burger, and we decided to share an app of mozzarella sticks, after our server asked if we preferred ranch or marina and we said Both please! Mozzarella stick portions were crazy generous, an order comes with 10 sticks and soup bowls full of marinara and ranch. They were pretty good, cooked well and seemed to be freshly made instead of frying from frozen. The batter was quite lacking in seasoning, but the dips of course help with that. My enormous side salad arrived with the appetizer while entrees followed 10 minutes later, which I don't love. I also appreciated that dressing automatically comes on the side and is generously provided, but they really are over-serving. They could charge dinner salad prices for the portion they laid out, good lord. My sandwich arrived and was fine, nothing special. The au jus dip was tasty and definitely provided the sandwich with the flavor punch it needed. I also sampled BF's burger and fries, and my opinion was consistent throughout - everything just really could have benefitted from seasoning. Large portions of bland food aren't a happy thing, no matter how affordable the price. And because of the massive portions and underwhelming flavor, we left fairly full plates behind when we departed. I 100% pledge to return for breakfast to sample one of their tantalizing-looking omelets before I lay down final judgment on this place. In the meantime, I praise them for offering generous portions at unbelievably low prices, just don't be afraid to use those salt & pepper shakers a little bit more. read more

I usually come here on Sundays so I'm not speaking for other days of the week, when I say that the service is not bad but it feels very understaffed. Whatever I come here the waitresses do tend to my needs (eventually) and bring me my food (eventually), and it does taste good. But they take forever to do their job! No one can possibly know I was diagnosed search but me. I would think that if I'm paying for service manager should be refilled or kept an eye on at least. Because I have no kids I eat out a lot and it's rare that my water ever runs out when I go out to restaurants to eat. ... all I have 2 say Is this place is no oasis. I'd rather eat at Sal's down the street. It's a family kitchen but at least they keep your water full, and the coffee coming. I really really really really enjoy the biscuits and gravy here. My boyfriend is from the south and he said this compares to home. So that's saying something! South kitchens biscuits and gravy do not compares to the biscuits and gravy served here. I will come back to this restaurant but I will be aware that it's going to take a long while to get my food and that this isn't the type of restaurant to have a relationship with your waitress. It doesn't create an experience. It's more to fill the need of hunger (eventually). read more

I think this place is what I miss the most about living in Martinez. My boyfriend & I make excuses to go here as often as possible. On New Year's Day, we met up with a group of 6 hungover friends and stumbled in about an hour before closing. I had never been in their back room before, but it was pleasantly private and comfortable for our group of 8. We all got our comfort foods, which ranged from pasta to eggs benedict to avocado-turkey clubs and everything in between. Iced teas to coffees to sodas that looked like water, yet the food and service were flawless. These guys continue to impress me and make me smile more and more every time I eat here. read more

Went to this place on 2 separate occasions for breakfast. The first time my boyfriend and I went here, we were seated in a nice corner booth by the window. Our waitress was very nice and attentive and we had a great experience here. That is until we came again for the second time. Came in for breakfast again and when the lady went to seat us I asked if we could sit at the corner booth again. She looked at me and said "for only 2 people?" And I said yes (which is where we sat last time, just us two). She said uh no, how about this booth over here. So me biting my tongue and not trying to argue I didn't say anything and we sat where she wanted us too. A few moments later, she came by our table and asked if we wanted to sit upstairs at a booth, I said no we're fine (we wanted to sit by the window at the corner booth). About 5-10 minuets later I look over and see that they seated TWO ladies at the corner booth! Yes I said TWO! And I mind you there were still tables open for them to sit at, or maybe she could of sent them upstairs, like she tried to with us. This was very frustrating and poor customer service! Almost felt a little like we were Stero typed cause we are Hispanics and it's funny that the two ladies that she seated there after us were Caucasians. Went here for Mother's Day breakfast. We had a reservation for four at 9:30 a.m. and we were seated a little bit after 9:30. I love how this restaurant is set up. It is all exposed knotty pine construction that gives it a real "cabin" sort of feel. The restaurant has some pretty cool and different seating areas; there is the main seating area, plus other less obvious areas, like second floor seating (named The Jury Box) and a separate, smaller room (The Judge's Quarters). Even though the place was packed, each booth was closed off enough that you could hear the person across the table without yelling. The wall art is ridiculously cheesy with no apparent theme. Might as well just take it down, you are covering up the pine... On to the food.... I ordered Eggs Benedict, not the best, but not the worst that I have had. The hollandaise sauce was what brought it down- it was pretty goopy. Goopy Hollandaise Sauce = No Bueno. Big sized plates, with plenty of food. Hash Browns were really good as they weren't too salty. Everyone was very happy with their orders. The waffles were really good as well. The food came out pretty fast, and our coffee cups never got empty. If I lived or worked in Martinez, I could definitely see setting up a weekly ritual of eating breakfast/lunch here. I've never been to this part of Martinez. Looked like a Ghost Town when my folks and I got there. We came here on a Sunday at 11am, my mom suggested it cause she works at the bank down the street. We parked in the parking lot next to it and followed a sign that lead us to the back entrance, YIKES! I'll go in through the front next time. The inside of the restaurant is nice inside, don't let the outside fool you. The inside reminds me of a cabin in Tahoe. It's a "small restaurant", probably 50-60 people at most. We were seated upstairs in the "Jury box", kinda cramped but it worked. Now for the food, one word, "awesome." Ok maybe artery clogging as well. But nonetheless, I had a excellent breakfast/brunch. I ordered the Courtyard special (with waffle, sausage, and eggs), less than $9. When i got my plate my jaw hit the floor, the waffle was huge and delicious. It came with 6 sausages, and two eggs. The waffle was scrumptious and and the sausages was good. The other plates that was ordered was another courtyard special with pancakes and bacon, and there was a lot of it. 4 pancakes and a ton of bacon. The Steak and eggs plate was good too. I got to try a piece of the steak and it was good. The hash browns was good as well, my mom complained that it was too dry. Good overall experience, food was good and priced real well compared to iHop and Denny's. Also, this place has them beat on food quality and value. read more

We have eaten at this downtown location many times. The food is your normal breakfast/brunch/lunch fare and offers fairly large portions. The food is always fresh and tasty. We have also found that prices are very reasonable. They offer good burgers, sandwiches & salads, good tasty omelets, and lots of standard egg/hash brown/sausage or bacon/pancakes etc. choices. All of which are solid well made menu items with large portions (we usually always leave with a doggie bag). So far we have no complaints about any of the food here, and plan to keep it on our rotation of breakfast choices when dining out. The place is located in a cute, converted old building in downtown Martinez. It has a couple of levels and there are lots of tables throughout. The décor is almost borderline "dated" but the wood design (the walls and ceiling) is beautiful CSC does get busy and there is usually a wait on the weekends but given the sit-down restaurant choices for breakfast in the vicinity, it's worth the wait. During the warmer months they also offer outside seating. There is street parking available and a back lot with a convenient back entrance. However we must point out that there are a couple things that prevented a 5 star rating; 1) The unfortunate part about this place is their limited hours. They're only open for breakfast and lunch, which is okay if that's what ya' want! Martinez could use another "basic-American-style-food" place in the downtown area for late afternoon and dinnertime hours. 2) While the Hostess is great, the waitresses seem to be hit/miss at times. They provide fair service (meals hot, silverware clean etc.) but. none seem to provide an extra-smile or conversation or take any type of "love" for their job or the place they work. It's odd, I get the same impression from the owner. BUT it's not prevented us from eating there, as no one is mean or rude, it's just an oddity as I said. Yelpers can eat here with confidence as CSC provides good solid food at a reasonable price. :-) read more

French Toast tastes like scrambled eggs. Corned beef hash has an odd taste and texture. Chili: The waitress offered my bf onions and cheese on top - what he got was a whole raw onion chopped on top of an incredibly salty chili (and he loves salty food). He said eating it was like biting into an onion and then eating a spoon of salt. Mozzerella sticks: Came with a good amount of ranch and marinara, but the cheese was cold (not stringy and melted like it should be). "Crispy" hashbrowns: Soggy and too thick.
