I was in the area this week and my husband had this on our list of places to visit, due to some write-up he read somewhere. The first red flag was that we wanted to call with a question and found that the voicemail response and website were both borderline hostile and disdainful of customers. The location was clean and the female cashier was very nice, which is why my review is two stars and not one. The food was odd. I can't understand why anyone is rating this highly except that people are happy when they're on vacation and food tastes better that way. We shared a platter and were completely underwhelmed by all of the meat. The rolls and mac and cheese were okay and that's what I ended up filling up on because the meat was depressing. The two spicy BBQ sauces both had a weird metallic flavor. There was a TV showing a slideshow of dogs at the restaurant eating BBQ from someone wearing black latex gloves which was kind of cute until I started wondering if they change their gloves after feeding all these dogs from them. But more importantly, I saw a sign complaining about inflation and fuel prices being the reason for an increase in costs, along with Trump merchandise for sale by the drinks. A tiny bit of online digging confirmed that this business was fully MAGA in the past with flags and signs but got a bit quieter about it in 2024. I believe it's important to know if and when we're spending our money to support people who actively vote for the destruction of the planet, human rights, and the fabric of our country. I absolutely would not have spent any money here if I had known. **Update** Before I wrote my review, I had already seen that the business owner appears very sensitive to any critique. He seems compelled to respond to anyone he views as "attacking his business," or in my case, being "hurtful," on a website built for customers to review businesses, which is what I did. This business owner has chosen to suggest that I must be wrong for not liking the food, because other people give it five stars. He then says the Trump hot sauce he's selling is just "for the kick of it," I suppose just like some folks sell items with Confederate flags or swastikas because it's such a fun little joke. Hilarious! My concerns about hygiene with food prep staff hand-feeding barbecue to customers' dogs were not addressed in his response. Finally, rather than denouncing any suggestions of political allegiance to Trump or specifically addressing the claim that this business was apparently displaying Trump signs prior to 2024, he calls me "immature" and that people like me are why Trump won and that I'm going to be targeted and I should "be careful." He has said all of this on a publicly viewable website that many potential customers will check before coming to his restaurant. That sure sounds like something to consider before eating food from this place!
Copper Top BBQ on Highway 395 is a must try! It was a rustic, clean, and welcoming spot, and the restrooms are immaculate! We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and there was live music playing, which made the atmosphere even more charming. We ordered the Big Pine Mega Platter (says for 2), and it was just perfect for my husband, teenage son, and I to share without any leftovers. All the meats were juicy and tender! Potato salad was good and mac was nice and creamy! We love the spicy bbq sauce as well! Overall everything was delicious and food came out fast. Really glad we stopped in, and we're already looking forward to coming back again soon.
You can immediately spot this BBQ joint on the rode with the all smoke from the grilling out in front. You order at the window, then wait at the inside window for your order to be called. The BBQ already comes in reusable to-go containers so you can grab a table or take it home to enjoy! * Big Pine Mega Platter (2 person) - 9.2/10 (i love how this plate includes four different types of bbq so you get to taste test a little bit of everything! the tri tip is cooked to the perfect amount of pinkness, but the cut itself was a bit tough to my liking. the pulled pork was tender, & the flavor was sweet & smokey. the ribs had a beautiful glaze & was quite tender & juicy. the chicken sausage was huge & had a very nice bite to it. it was also super juicy, not too salty, & addictive. the Hawaiian bread is just your average Hawaiian bread. the mac & cheese was creamy, & the noodles are cooked just right. the green chili is light & hearty. overall, this plate is worth the try for bbq lovers!)
Great BBQ! Clearly a popular place as it opened at 11 and there was a line when we pulled up at 10:57. Super fast service with very helpful staff and great quality BBQ. They have indoor tables and outdoor depending on the weather conditions. I got the pulled pork sandwhich with a pickle add on that was so flavorful and hearty. The mac and cheese is a MUST- it's so creamy and decadent. Great as a pit stop going to or from Mammoth, definitely adding this spot to my road trip list.
Decent experience as a whole at Copper Top. This was on our way to Mammoth, and we had heard this was a spot to stop at. The ribs were really excellent, perfectly smoky and just the right texture. I liked the pulled pork as well. The tri tip and mac and cheese didn't quite do it for me, but that may just be personal preference. I loved all the dog imagery everywhere too!
My friends and I along with our wives stopped by this restaurant to eat on our way back to Los Angeles from Mammoth Lake. We arrived around 10:30 am and were told by employees they don't open until 11 am. Which is perfectly fine. Employee even recommended a coffee shop which we tried. However, the employee never said about the line and wait time when they open. If he had mentioned anything we, would've just wait at the restaurant. We ordered nine well done hamburgers and the food was just amazing. I really recommend folks to stop and try the food. The wait is worth it! Female cashier was very wonderful and helpful. Super patient with our large order. However, after waiting for almost 25 minutes, I asked the gentleman serving the ready food about our order and he was clearly bothered by my question and rudely said, it's going to take a long time since you order nine well done burgers. If you show up shortly before 11 am sitting will be fine. However, I really wish this restaurant had some rules and regulations about dogs in the restaurant. Multiple people with their dogs just walking around the place with no care for other customers. With my situation my wife was attacked by a dog when she was a child and has bad trauma. While our group sat at a table to eat, my wife was crying inside the car and I was standing by the car in the street eating my food. The restaurant should designate an area outside for dog owners to sit, making it easier for others to sit inside. Restaurant overall is very clean. However, I think this will be my last time here due to our experience. I hated seeing my wife in stress and will not repeat it again. *** To the business owner. Thank you for responding to my review. However, your reply is not accurate. If you want to reply and talk down to customers make sure it's appropriate. Traffic heading down was actually very little, at no time did we bother or interruption your workers. Yes, the female cashier did tell us it could take a little time. I only asked your rude employee once!!! Thank you again for your reply and it clearly shows who you are as a business owner. If there was any chance of me giving your establishment a chance again, that is completely out of the question. I don't support business owners who can't take criticism well.
Wow! Have been driving past here for years and years on the way to Tahoe and can't believe I haven't stopped until this year. Truly this BBQ is so good, on the way up we got the mega platter to eat for dinner and then on the way home we picked up vacuum sealed bags to take home with us for a later date. No wonder it is always packed here! Everyone at Copper Top was so nice and chatted with us about their sauces and the process. The ribs and tri-tip were my personal favorites, and the Mac n cheese and the coleslaw sides are also delicious. There's plenty of tables to eat at over there at the restaurant, and it's so nice to smell the smoke coming off the grills while everything is cooking too! I definitely recommend making a stop here if you're on your way up to Mammoth or Tahoe.
Great food experience here! In the middle of nowhere is the copper top bbq. It doesn't look like much on the outside but food is something to look forward to here. The seating is essentially all outdoors and food is basic ready the second you order it. I wish the food overall was a little hotter but that's my only ask. This places really does have great tasting food.
Every time I drove by, I always saw smoke and would think that they are barbecuing around the clock... However, I found out that they just burn wood all the time to create the thought that they're always cooking. After you park in the small lot, if you find one, you come to the front left side to wait in the line to go up to a window to tell the cashier what you want. We tried a variety of stuff, but nothing was great. Nothing was good. Some of it was ok. Sorry, actually, the Mac N' Cheese was the only thing that was ok. Everything else was below par, but considering it's out there in BFE, it's probably good because that's all they really have. There is another place down the street, but I haven't tried that yet. Ambiance is good, lots of seating that is covered from the sun. Try it if you must, but don't have high expectations if you are already reading this. The best thing was the chili.
I remember this being amazing years ago. This time, it was just OK - the ribs and pulled pork were alright I suppose, but I have had better. Beans were pretty darn good but not super amazing like before. Also, it seemed more built-out and commercialized than I remember, which I suppose comes with some level of success and notoriety. I'm afraid I have to downgrade this from a must-stop on the way to Mammoth, to a reasonable choice if you have a hankering for BBQ but otherwise missable.
I have driven through Big Pine multiple times a year my whole life and we have regularly commented on how nice it would be to stop here sometime. I am so glad we finally did! They have a very nice and comfortable indoor/outdoor seating area and everyone is very friendly and helpful. On top of that, the food was just absolutely spectacular! I had the Tri Tip Mac and Cheese which was perfectly cheesy and the meat was tender. All of their sauces were also fantastic! My whole family just loved their dinner and it was perfectly located on the roadside for us to continue on our way! Will be back soon !
Don't forget to stop here if your driving thru. This is a bbq spot you don't want to miss they even have a vending machine with vacuum sealed meats to take on the go . The ribs are to die for flavored you so t even need bbq sauce sweet and tasty. The side o really liked the coleslaw. Outdoor seating or indoor. read more

Fourth time stopping here this year on our way to Bridgeport. This time we got the tri-tip meal and there was definitely enough for the two of us for lunch. The tri-tip and bbq sauce taste even better than the lovely aroma lofting from the grills. The macaroni and cheese is so cheesy and yummy. We got an extra side of potatoe salad which has that homemade taste made with red potatoes and is savory and satisfying. The meal comes with two hawaiian style rolls and a beverage. The service is exceptional as they have been working all morning getting the food ready so when you place you order it is only minutes until it is ready to eat. This is one of the best road trip stops available onthe 395 through Big Pine. They open at 11 am and a line starts forming by 11:05. read more

The food was good. I love their Spicy BarBQ sauce, although it said it was spicy it wasn't but the flavor is so good. We ordered the Big Pine Platter which has all of the meats and the coleslaw hits. I also tried the tri tip burger and it was pretty decent, the thing that kinda sucked was they offer a packet of thousand island sauce and it's not a good one. If they made a special sauce for their burger dang it would be really good. Josh was very helpful and gave good suggestions, as it was our first time trying the place out. There's a walk up window where you order, plenty of outside seating. Some inside seating in a barn type of setting which is neat. It's a causal type of place. I also appreciate the Smoky BarBQ pits out front, love the experience. read more
This is a great little spot to stop by for a filling meal along HWY 395. I was actually super hiped about this place after watching lots of food videos. When we sat down, the service was quick, meat platter was good but not as amazing as I thought. I could have been biased after a trip to Austin earlier and tasted one of the best BBQs there. The quality and variety cannot simply compare. If you compare to a 7/11 or a fast food restaurant, yeah it is much better, but it cannot compare to a legit BBQ place in metropolitan areas. read more
I got here with my family at 11am right when it opened, the line moved very fast and plenty of seating outside and inside where they have AC! The bbq ribs is the best I've had this year, better than my trip to Austin. Also, the shave ice is so smooth like I'm in North Shore Oahu. Trust me you got to stop here! read more

AMAZING!!!!! Flavor is amazing and the customer service is top notch! The young lady taking orders is awesome, the folks busting their hump in the back putting orders together, and I can't forget the smoke master making the most delicious BBQ I have ever had!!! The tri-tip was perfect, pulled pork was deliciously moist and flavorful, and the pork ribs, they stole the show!! I can't wait to come back! read more

Only had a rack of ribs and a pound of tri-tip and some mac & cheese everything was great!!!!!I just don't understand why there was no brisket option there is pulled pork, pork ribs tri-tip and I believe two different sausages no chicken no brisket. The bread absolutely horrible. Drove 300 miles the rack of ribs and a pound of tri-tip just about the same price I suggest just getting ribs doubled up on them. They're good. A tri-tip is good too. It is a tricky piece of beef. Shout out to the pit master. Keep it going all the flavors there on the meat. Spot on bomb !!!!!!! Ppl it's not expensive I paid it. I got 110 bucks for everything got a soda and 16 oz Mac juicy juicy juicy ribs ... can't wait to be back thx u pit master I believe selling slices of bimbo white bread for $.50 apiece maybe a couple cents more would be better than those Hawaiian buns but that's just my opinion read more
Yas yas yas what a find in the seemingly middle-of-nowhere (nowhere here being eastern sierras, in Big Pines). We got the 2p platter ($38) that comes wit: 2 drinks - yay fancy touchscreen coke machine! 2 sides - we chose Mac n cheese and their sleeper hit green chili Tri tip, Pulled pork, Chicken sausage, Ribs - all were sooo good - just perfectly seasoned and tender. I was reallll tempted to drive back the next day too. They have a great location right off the main road, ready to refuel you after a long day adventuring. Super friendly staff, no frills seating at picnic tables (with some sheltered space) and seems like they try to recycle the plastic containers which is great. Will be back for sure next time we drive thru! read more

Passing through and this spot was highly recommended by my bro in law. Some of the best tasting bbq I've had. Even bought a few vacuum sealed bbq for the 5 hour drive home and they still survived and tasted good. read more

Last time I was here was prob 4 years ago - so to say I was super looking forward to stopping here on my way home - while on a hwy 395 road trip - is a massive understatement. I was absolutely looking forward to it! I ordered the tritip burger - per the recommendation of the staff. On the menu, I read you have to pay extra for sides - lettuce, tomato, pickle, etc (see menu). So I asked to pay extra for these. However, when my burger came out - it was stuffed in a black plastic box only with lettuce and onion. What happened to this place? Really disappointed. Would I go back? Not sure. Prob not. The guy at the cash register was also rude and impatient even tho there was no one in line behind me. It's like they don't care about service here anymore. Driving up to Mammoth and saw a sign advertising BBQ miles ahead. Something about road trips makes me more receptive to signs like that but with all that time I also looked up the reviews and saw it wasn't just clever marketing. By the time I drove up I was eager to try out their food but wasn't so hungry to get a platter, but I didn't come all this way to NOT try their BBQ, especially after seeing their smokers out front. There was a small line to order from the window out front and then walk in to get utensils and get alcohol; a bit of a weird set up. The beer part was interesting, that was listed as a reverse tap, a term I had never heard of. I wish Yelp would let me upload video but basically there's a valve that lets the beer come from the bottom up, which means there's no head which the beertender said was a benefit. Since I wasn't that hungry I decided to get the tri-tip sandwich and they asked my level of doneness, rare and I got a side of potato salad as well, thinking it would be one of those little styrofoam tubs. What I got were two plastic containers, both filled. One with potato salad and the other held my sandwich with some pickles. The sandwich was huge with the cuts of beef overflowing out of the bread and into the container. When I said 'rare' they really meant it and I loved that. The potato salad though was a little disappointing-little underseasoned. Seating wise-it's all outdoors, the photos make it look nice but it was hot even with fans and I got a seat near their garbage cans which just made it a magnet for flies. read more
We purposely didn't get food in bishop because we always smell this gorgeous smoke coming from the highway when passing by. We decided on our way home from SoCal to try it out. The line was long but the smells coming from the pit were not to miss. If only Bath and Body works could make a candle of this place. We ordered the tri tip sandwich, pulled pork, Mac and cheese and the potato salad. The sides were standard and had a few different seasonings that made them unique. Personally the cost was a little high for dressed up pasta and potatoes. Worth trying. The pulled pork was very soft and melted in your mouth, I like mine with more seasoning but once we added their bbq sauce it was delicious on the brioche bun. (Or Hawaiian roll, I can't remember). The best item was the Tri tip sandwich, this was super tender and has a great bark on it. Highly recommend trying this place if you are traveling the 395, a great local place to support. read more

Delicious! Fast, hot, and friendly service. Tri tip was well seasoned and delicious, pulled pork was oh SO good, super tender and amazing on their rolls. Mac and cheese was not what I expected but it goes well with the meat and is a great creamy side (and addition to sandwiches). We've always wanted to stop at Copper Top, thankfully we had a little extra time on our drive and decided to go for it. 5 stars all around, the staff was incredible, very friendly, good atmosphere, and terrific food. It was quite busy our entire visit but they were working hard filling orders quickly! I got the rib combo with potato salad. The ribs are perfectly cooked, literally fell off the bone. I used the ironical bbq sauce which had a tangy sweet flavor. The potato salad was a creamy, crunchy treat. read more

This is a great place to stop for dinner en route to Mammoth! We certainly protein loaded for our ski trip here. The views were incredible, we were greeted with the delicious scent of fresh barbecue, and the food was a 10/10. The prices were not as cheap as I had heard, but still very reasonable considering how much meat you get. The potato salad was tasty, but a bit celery heavy for me. I really enjoyed the tri tip - it was cooked perfectly and had a nice smoky taste. The sweet rolls that are served with your meal are actually just Hawaiian rolls so don't waste your side on that. Overall, I was super impressed by the food here and the QUICK service!! I'll definitely be back next time I'm heading up the mountain :) read more
OK- when I heard this place was good, I was thinking to myself, just how good can bbq be; what would make it so special? Um, even with high expectations, Copper Top did not disappoint. They smoke the meats outside by the patio. Finger-lickin good meats, especially the ribs. Rolls were so soft and tasty, too. Plenty of patio seating. Nice and organized with sanitizing wipes and recycle bins. Order at the counter and then pick up and bring to your table. They package everything in microwavable/recyclable plastic containers. They even have a vending machine where you can purchase everything from Copper Top hats to their dry rub, to juice containers with figurine tops (be forewarned. These were pricey at $3.50, and when your kid wants that Mercat from Gabby's Dollhouse, which is behind the Chase Paw Patrol pup, somehow you might end up getting two.) Clean restrooms, and a parking lot. We will always stop on the way back from Mammoth! read more

I see BBQ Beef Ribs in the pictures, but don't see them on the menu...are beef ribs served on certain days only?
Which pictures are you referring to? All pictures that I have taken are of our pork ribs, as far as I can recall. I did experiment with beef ribs once but it's not an item we offer, even for specials, at this time.
We're on a road trip and will be passing by, how long does it take for pick up? I plan to call ahead and trying not to wait there too long.
My order took between five and ten minutes. It was pretty quick. And very satisfying.
Are there any non-spicy meats? My toddler cannot handle any spicy foods and I'd like to know if there would be something for her to eat.
I have only had the ribs and the tri-tip sandwich. Neither were spicy to me, but I would say that the tri-tip was not spicy at all, while the ribs did have a rub on it which could be spicy to a toddler.
Is the BBQ sauce gluten free or are there any gluten free options?
The BBQ sauce isn't gluten free, but everything else besides the bread is gluten free. The sides and the meats are, except the pulled pork which has BBQ sauce in it.
