I used to be a regular customer, frequently coming in to buy half a dozen to a dozen donuts, breakfast sandwiches, and hot chocolate. I usually paid in cash and never had an issue. However, recently paying with my Visa debit card via Apple Pay revealed a deeply dishonest and crooked side to how they run their business. This establishment is actively taking advantage of its customers by illegally charging a $0.50 fee on all debit card transactions. The Facts: Why This is a Scam It is important for consumers to know their rights. While merchants are legally permitted to pass along credit card processing fees under specific conditions, they are strictly prohibited from doing so with debit cards. * Debit Cards (Illegal to Surcharge): Under federal regulations and major card network rules (Visa and Mastercard), businesses cannot charge a convenience fee or surcharge for using a debit card. This applies whether you enter a PIN or run it as credit. * Credit Cards (Legal to Surcharge): Merchants are allowed to add a surcharge to credit card transactions in most states (capped around 3% to 4%), provided it is clearly disclosed to the customer. By blanketing a $0.50 fee across all cards, including debit, this business is directly violating federal guidelines and breaching their merchant agreement with their payment processors. Untrustworthy and Appalling Customer Service What makes this situation horrendous is their blatant disregard for doing the right thing. When I directly confronted the staff about why they were illegally surcharging a debit card, they had the audacity to smile and simply say, "That's how we do it here."
