It's a clean and simple set up with a small bar. The walls are pretty bare, intentionally- trying to make it like a modern farm to table kind of look. The servers and bartenders are all fitted in their best hipster outfits. Pro-tip get a combo of sides as an appetizer. We went with the collards- well cooked not over done or mushy. The fingerling potato's - crunchy and salty on the outside with a soft inside. The cauliflower- simply yum. The fried chicken is amazing! It's so extra crispy and juicy without being greasy. It's a fancy fried chicken. The Mac & cheese was alright- not creamy or cheesy enough for my tastebuds. The craft cocktails are well balanced but on the more expensive side. On our first night visiting Savannah we wanted to walk to dinner after being in the car all day driving and we were lucky Cotton & Rye was just up the road! Despite it being a Tuesday, this place was busy! We ended up sitting in the bar area since we didn't have a reservation, so I highly recommend making one. The bar area is fine, but I would've loved to sit out on the enclosed patio. For drinks, I had the Little Bit Alexis cocktail which I had to order just for the name so thankfully it tasted great as well. My husband got the non-alcoholic Fall Brew (chai with fig and lemon) which was so good I was a little jealous I didn't order it. As a vegetarian, I'm always a little nervous when most of the veg options are sides, but Cotton & Rye blew me away! We got the mushroom gumbo entree (delicious) and did 3 sides for $20: mac & cheese (tasty), dill & basil cauliflower (unique *and* tasty) and the fingerling potatoes (perfectly crispy!). We had high expectations for Cotton & Rye due to reading many good reviews, but were slightly disappointed with our visit. The restaurant isn't centrally located and there was not much around it. We ordered the tossed salad and the fried chicken thighs with hot honey and spicy ranch. We were disappointed and didn't feel like any of the food was particularly flavorful. We started the night with cocktails. Luckily, the restaurant offers non-whiskey cocktails since I am not much of a fan of whiskey or scotch. My Thyme Lemonade vodka based cocktail was light and refreshing, but it could have used a little more vodka. For an appetizer we selected the award winning wings with spicy honey, sumac, and chipotle morita because how can you pass up on an award winning dish? Perhaps there were participation ribbons being passed out at this competition because these were hardly the mind blowing wings we were expecting. I didn't detect any spice from the honey and the wings were a bit bland. Our pb&j wings at the Treylor Park were better, cheaper, and came in a larger portion! My fried chicken thighs and macaroni and cheese were delicious, but I can get this same dish for much cheaper in most of the restaurants in Savannah. My husband's pork chop looked so promising. You could tell it was a really nice cut. Unfortunately, the pork chop was under seasoned and my husband said he prefers my recipe. (I make this mustard sauce that is to die for!) This was the meal I was most looking forward to on our Savannah trip, and maybe because I'd built it up so much in my mind, I felt slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, this is still a great restaurant to visit, I think I was just expecting something a little different in a way I can't explain. There was a torrential downpour just after we'd arrived and we were very well-protected from the elements. Surprisingly, the item that we loved the most was the tomato salad. It was so fresh, with an amazing dressing. I think it must have been a special because I don't see it on their regular menu. We also had the award-winning chicken wings which we both found to be too sauced and too sweet for our taste. For mains, I had the fried chicken and my bf had some sort of pork/Calabrian chili/pasta dish. Of all the things on our plates, the mac and cheese was the star. I'm willing to say this was the best meal I had on my trip to the South. Several of the seemingly-simple dishes were really stunning, and most things weren't overwhelmingly butter-and-sugar-y despite being such classic Southern food. Dumplings in the chicken and dumplings were fresh-made and superb. Shrimp and grits was not Carolina-style (no sauce), but was excellent for the dish it was. The pork shank had really rich flavor, and the market fish was cooked perfectly and the sauces fit it nicely. I'm not a mac and cheese enthusiast but it got good reviews from my companions; the cabbage had a nice bite to complement the richer dishes, and the cornbread managed to be grainy and yet not too mealy. We showed up @ 6:45 on a Saturday and only had to wait 10 minutes for a table . My wife ordered some wine as well as the pork belly & I ordered the swordfish mine was seriously incredible and my wife said hers was really hood as well. The dish itself had a beautiful presentation and the sauce was the bomb but it was very, very dry. All of the other dishes we had were the bomb. The shrimp & grits are always a good choice. The kale and mushroom side was delicious with an interesting seasoning on it. The Oysters Rockafeller (or similar name) was a special that was done with a southern flare. It was GF and it was delic!
