Just thought I'd show this place some love. The food is delicious, and the portions are huge, I got the Country Skillet, and it fed me for the entire day, ate half and had the rest for dinner. I was honestly surprised to see that it has a three star rating haha, it is more affordable than many of the other diners in town and the food in my opinion was better than places like Old River Grill, which has better ratings. Decided to try this place out for the first time and let me tell you i will no return back to this place, we walked in and wasnt sure if we sat ourself or they would seat us so we stood by the door for about 5 minutes being completely ignored. Went to lunch this afternoon ordered the chicken club sandwich . sandwich tasted great service was slow but can be understood was told 10 min wait 40mins later still not sat down .I don't want to be waiting for 40 mins on my only day off of work .after eating there I got the worst stomach ach I ever had .don't know if the chicken was tainted but never will I take myself or my children there to eat again .maybe that's why the prices are fair the good is past the date to pass inspection .may be city inspectors so check the kitchen and the food they are serving the public .so before you take your children there beware!!!!!!! read more

I've been coming to Country Kitchen for years now and never had a bad experience. The portion size is good and the prices are reasonable. I come for the Chile Verde skillet because it's amazing! Trash service, VERY unclean from the doors to floors. Yuck! I don't know why we even stayed. The seats in the booth we sat at were full of food, the floors were gross. We then see the busier pick up, hopefully unopened, packages of jelly then add them back to the caddy on the table; he could have at least wiped them off. Our orders were taken, and as we waited for our meal we were sat next to a large very loud party. Being that we were in such close proximity, like just about leg to leg, due to only one side of the restaurant being open the waitress should have moved the the other party's table over as far as possible. which she didn't. The steak wasn't seasoned and over cooked, eggs and toast were cold and my daughter's waffles were dry and tough. First time coming to "country kitchen" first thing I noticed was how dirty this place was. There was trash all of the ground. The ketchup bottle, syrup bottle, Tabasco sauce, and the sugar bottle all had gravy sauce all over it. When using the restroom it looked like they've never cleaned it. Breakfast and coffee for two and under $15.00! My second time here and first time since they remodeled. You seat yourself anywhere you like and our waitress immediately handed us menu's. She came back with two cups of joe and took our order. I had your basic eggs, sausage, and hash browns. Huge portion of browns and my sausage had to be cut with a knife. I give them 2 stars since the food is good but the service is horrible... I am what you would call somewhat a regular customer. I sat at the counter and watched the waitresses walk past me 6 times without once acknowledging me. No one asked if I needed anything to drink or even offer me a menu. After 10 minutes I asked if they had forgotten me. My order was then taken and my food was delivered promptly. I am now sitting here as I type this review and have been finished for 15 minutes, the dishes have been removed and I still haven't received my check. This place needs better staff. read more

Waitress got the wrong order then when told she got the order wrong she snatched the menu out of our hands and slammed it on the counter loudly whilst walking away. Also, the food took about half an hour to arrive. You know, before getting it wrong. I have been to this cute hole in the wall place twice and both times were great experiences. Food is tasty and prices are great plus the staff are friendly and efficient. Both times I got the chile verde burritos (you get two big ones) with potatoes on the side for only $6.75 which oz a great price. The chile verde is homemade and delicious. The eggs in the burrito are cooked to perfection and the potatoes or crisp with onions and peppers mixed in. I highly recommend this place. read more

I'm reminded of this diner when I think of Bakersfield. My colleague and I were driving around looking for a place to eat after our meeting with a company out here. He wanted McDonald and I wanted something I couldn't eat down in LA area. I figured hey, there is a country kitchen. It might be something really similar to what we have in Atlanta, GA. So we tried this place out. I've ordered the country fried steak with gravy, 2 sunny side eggs and country style potato. My food was okay, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Fried food will always be. You really can't mess up on eggs.. I mean, can you? My colleague on the other hand.. Lol. He ordered a chicken sandwich and he kept complaining to me. When the waitress came around he asked her word for word, "Excuse me, is this chicken sandwich actually cooked or microwaved?" Her response was, "Oh, it was actually microwaved BUT it was cooked afterwards." He was like yuck! Then I was stuck listening to him complain about that chicken sandwich on our way to the next meeting. That is only because I told the waitress our food had been sitting up there. She gives our food and our food is cold. The babies were crying so we just ate it. "On the road again", while heading up to Porterfield, CA to attend my friends dear Mother, Antonia and help celebrate her 100th birthday we decided to stop to eat. As we rolled off the "99" at White lane we observed a Denny's, Micky D's, Carl's, Del Taco and hiding in back of all this was what appeared to be a old Denny's style building now called the Country Kitchen. Hmmm. Being a Triple D fan we opted for the greasy spoon ambiance, as opposed to to the stereo- typical blandness of the others. We entered the typical scene where everybody stops talking to look you over but being a Yelper "pro" I nodded and said good morning to everyone and they went about their business. Our waitress was cordial with the typical what'll ya have, hon? and being almost lunch I opted for the "Philly-melt" with a salad ( you have to cut corners somewhere) and my bride chose the "Ortega omelet" which was very good. My salad was diner style swimming in Italian dressing and my sandie was great, but as Linda M. said almost knife and fork. We enjoyed this place for all it's dumpiness. We really were planning on eating at Denney's but all three of them were overflowing with people waiting for a table. Later I saw the depth of my oncoming senility as it turned out we have been retired long enough to both forget it was Sunday and not the Monday we thought it was. Oops is all I can say. So my husband said we would check out the Country Kitchen, formerly a Farmer John's when we were a lot younger than now. Yes it is a little shabby on the exterior but in a down home dive sort of way. Of course they were busy too and we copped the last two chairs at the counter next to a very talkative "T" who considered himself to be their biggest fan. We both enjoyed our counter neighbor as he explained that he came from the Fairfax area of town every day to eat there. Thanks "T" for all the good advice. OK, now on to the food. We both got the Senior Ham and Eggs. My husband had his with hash browns and toast. I had mine with country potatoes and biscuit which came with gravy enough for both of us. The food was good although I would not say it was great. The ham was good. My country potatoes were flavorful and actually warm. My husband said his hash browns were good but not great. The eggs were properly cooked and to our liking. Toast is toast, what else can I say. The biscuit was huge and of the type I am not crazy about. But many people like their biscuits like the ones they serve here. The gravy could have used some sausage such as they put in theirs at Denney's. The bonus is that all senior menu breakfasts come with free coffee. The coffee alone is worth $1.99 at Denney's. I ended up taking half of my ham home to my always hungry dogs, and just over half of my biscuit to the wild birds I feed in my back yard "bird sancuary". I have to admit that I had a good view of food going out of the kitchen and everything looked good. After being stuffed beyond full I paid our tab of $13.13 and left contented. Service wasn't perfect but they were extremely busy and I can't fault our waitress for that. It seems that in our area of town everyone goes out for Sunday brunch.
