What delightful bar keep and selections on what otherwise would have been a dull Monday evening. Loved the vibe and interior! I kept being reminded by the witty interior design of the title of the Christopher Isherwood book "I Am A Camera" . Too literate? I know, but wit is such a delicious thing to find lost among the drinking set. Delightful selection of Alsatian sparkling wines! Wines that are rarely seen in American, but so fresh and delightful on a Summer evening. How fun was that to see? They also offer a modest but well chosen selection of other regional wines and a very strong offering of small batch beers. Food: A very solid charcuterie plate, yummy flat breads and a Croc Provencal with salad that is generous enough for two. I was told these were tasting plates, but between my friends we had eaten enough to for go supper elsewhere. We found the staff warm and offered perfect service. Checking in and refilling water glasses. Will be back for future thirst-quenching sessions. I was feeling a "low-key" kind of evening. I wanted to make the most of a Saturday night but didn't want to go out with a bang, so I thought a wine bar sounded just right. This place was not packed, unlike what I expected. Seating was plentiful. I had room to breathe and was able to enjoy conversation. Three of us sat at the bar, but there are also table tops inside, and lounge seating right outside the doorway. Though I gravitate towards beer which they have about 6+ on tap, I opted for wine because I'm trying to expand my pallet. As stated by everyone else, there is no wine list. You inform the bartender of your taste preference and he/she chooses a few bottles for you to sample, and then you make your final selection. I enjoyed a glass of "Straight Kickin' It Syrah" which both my husband (a cabernet fan) and I enjoyed. We also had a charcuterie plate and for $15 (3 options) we were underwhelmed. I came to Covell after a meal in Silver Lake last weekend. After luckily finding parking just around the corner, my friend and I came in to a very busy Covell. We had to stand around the bar near the order here sign for a while before it was finally our turn to order. I loved that there were so many options to drink. For a wine bar, they definitely weren't just limited to wine. There was also beer, cider, and some mixed cocktails too, from what I recall. I appreciated the variety - and even among wines, there was a lot to pick from. I ended up not feeling like drinking wine and opted for a glass of cider instead. My friend got a mixed cocktail. The drinks were fine and pretty reasonably priced. What I liked more was the atmosphere. There were lots of different kinds of people at Covell, which made it a great place to simply people watch. It was pretty busy, so my friend and I scoured the place until we found an empty bench near the entrance and took a seat there. Service: People were nice. There were only two or three people working the bar, but they weren't too slow and seemed able to manage things despite being seemingly understaffed. 'It's going fucking awesome, how are you? The first words out of the bartender's mouth -- not your mom's wine bar. Out for a walk, I hit that stretch of Los Feliz I still find a little strange for the types of establishments it houses--gas station! fancy burger joint! tax prep! wine bar! and decided that last one sounded good. Wine, as you know, is scientifically shown to make walks better. It's not as dark as the photos let on. It appears we're all shooting with the same shitty cell phone cameras. Or applying too many filters. It ultimately has that look to it. Earthy, twin-blade fans and Edison bulbs. But it pulls it off. It's nice. It's not stuffy or trying too hard. It works. It's nice and casual, and not gimmicky. Busy on a Wednesday night. Everyone was paired up. Awkward first dates, long time couples, girls' night out, the the dudes speaking entirely in old-when-they-said-it lines from Entourage. And my functioning alcoholic ass out for a walk. They'll ask you all sorts of questions. White or red? Fruity or earthy? "I have some ideas for you," they'll say and they'll bring out a disproportionate number of bottles and glasses to how many hands you have or how many people are in your party. The couple next to me had no fewer than 8 glasses between the two of them at any given time, was this a game? Like a Japanese restaurant where every little side or topping or piece of something comes in it's own dish or jar you'll revel in all the dishes you don't have to wash. And all the wine you're drinking. And you'll try this and that, little half glasses just to sample and who knows, you might end up with a 2010 Chono Carmenere trucked in from Chile ($10.09) or a Van Zellers Douro (Also $10.09...) if you answered with red and earthy and seemingly foreign. You, now who knows how much wine in will ponder how much all of this is costing you because as of yet you haven't seen a menu (or even the most of the bottles they have) and even when you do learn will ponder the decimals. Ah! you'll say, with tax that's a nice even $11. This it turns out is a pretty good median for prices at Covell. Sure the charcuterie runs a little more ($18) but presumably you'll share and deserts a little less, say a brownie ($7), sharing--not as likely. But flatbreads and little snacks here and there are about 10 bucks. And they have 8 beers on some very flashy taps as well in the $9-11 dollar range They'll talk your face off with wine. As far as I gathered, the couple next to me MADE wine Talks about each wine's journey and how it got here. "I want to know how long it's been planted, I bet it's young," someone said and then readily had knowledge regarding what percentage of the wine is made up of each grape. AND - those geniuses are charming, intelligent, witty and nice. Not kidding. I was lucky enough to have GM, Matthew Kaner, pour me a brilliant bubbly in a vintage champagne glass. And do NOT get me started on the cheeses with fresh, organic, local honey delivered on a tray/slab of tree. This place is fucking superb. I've been going here almost since they opened. The owner Dustin is a humble hard working dude with killer taste in wine. The vibe here is dark and sexy, like myself, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. This is that rare wine bar that never seems to have a weak wine. The limited food offerings of cheese and charcuterie plates pair perfectly with the wines. I always feel fairly sophisticated when I park myself at the bar here. This place was great. Low lighting. Check. Great food. Okay, I had the mac n'cheese with soppresata. (Did I spell that right?) I'd recommend it. Bartenders. Helpful. Friendly. Hipsters. Oh, the horror. Parking was kind of a bitch, but after 8pm, you can park by the children's hospital in the metered spots for free. (It's 1 hour parking from 8am-8pm over there Monday - Saturday.) It was a tiny walk, but not bad at all. I'm parking there more often. One weird thing, the bartender accidentally charged us an extra beer, then when my BF disputed it, the bartender said, "Oh, I just put that on there for you." Did he do that on purpose? I love this place. If you're willing to spend a minimum of $10 on a glass of wine, you should try this place out. If that's not for you (or if wine isn't your thing), they've got some beers on tap also that are pretty average priced. It can get pretty filled up in here considering it is kind of a small space, so I wouldn't try coming here with a group. If you're looking for a nice little date spot or to catch up with some friends, I'd recommend this place. Talk to the bartender and have him recommend something for you. At 8pm on a Monday night, this mellow wine bar was just what I needed. My dinner companion had the Mac N' Cheese that came w/ a side salad & was fantastic. I started w/ the Croque Monsieur, whose ancestor we find in Proust's "Remembrance of Things Past" & the fast food equivalent of our grilled cheese sandwich. These two plates were comfort food done right. It was here, that I was encouraged to stray from a Pinot Noir when the bartender/wine expert (both were charming by the way), upon my declaration of wanting a glass of P.N., poured me a little of this fabulous Chinon wine from Loire Valley whilst explaining the method of its creation( in contrast to the other wines they carried). The rest is history. Conversation flowed, fueled by great wine & good food. I wish I could give you the breakdown of the prices of each item, along w/ my dinner companion's white wine & Mac N' Cheese, but alas, I do not know & bask in the ignorance of how much the magical night actually cost. On a recent trip to LA to visit a friend, I was brought here. Relaxed, unpretentious, dark and moody. Loved it. Our bartender was very knowledgeable with wine and suggested an outstanding Malbec. Served with a charcuterie board that had the BEST black truffle salami. Truffled salami? Yes, it's true. Got to Covell, a trendy looking venue, sat down at the bar, and immediately was greeted by the guy behind the bar, who let me taste about 3 wines before I chose a Syrah, pinot, cab medley. $12. The menu is small, but don't let that scare you away. because each item on the menu is spectacular. I asked our server for an opinion on the menu. He answered 'If it weren't awesome, we wouldn't have it on the menu'. We ordered a cheese and charcuterie plate to start off, it was perfect. about $22, 3 heavenly, very unique cheeses, and 3 meats: chorizo, amazing salami, and prosciutto. We ordered the tortilla de papa, I was unaware that it comes with a spicy chili sauce smothered all over it, so make sure to order it on the side if you're picky. The vegetable salad is to die for, nothing ordinary. Ohhh and the mac and cheese with mortadella, a necessity. After all that wine, I needed to wake up. Theres no espresso, bummer. Valet is $3. Bar Covell! What can I say, so much to say about you. I love this place, I have recruited every one to come here, it is fabulous. First off- I love the vintage-like decor, the ambiance, the lighting and the seating. I wish there was MORE seating but I understand why there is not and it's still worth it to come even if I have to stand the whole time with a fantastic glass of wine in my hand. Secondly- came here the first time with my friend for his birthday. It was a Thursday night and the vibe was quiet. My favorite part was how the ordering went, now I don't know if it is like this for every one but it was my favorite way to order wine. I walked up to the bar and told the bar tender what I like and don't like when it comes to wine I drink, he then proceeded to give me 3 tastes of 3 different wines and I was able to choose which I liked and took two glasses of my favorite back for me and my friend. LOVED IT! I had wines from all over the world and all different flavors, but all flavors that suited my hoping-to-learn-more-wannabe-wine-connosieur- palate. I believe we had three glasses each of three entirely different styles of wine. It was great, and the perfect way to wine-down (yes I am so clever) the night of celebrating his birthday. I have been back several times since my first with all different people. I tell everyone I know who likes wine, about it and spread the word far. As a girl who can only say, "I like red wines with malbecs, but I don't know why," my server was extremely helpful in finding something I liked. Tried a couple and let him know I was hoping for something thicker or heavier, followed by an apology that I had no idea how to better describe wine because I know nothing. He told me it's fine it was all fancy wine talk to sound snooty. (I know he knew all the fancy talk but REALLY appreciated how he didn't make me feel bad about being a peasant.) He found the perfect wine in one more try, we ordered a lovely cheese and meat plate with duck, black truffle, and Gouda. The black truffle was 1 0 0 % D I V I N E. The server was also kind enough to bring out more jam and bread when we were running low, which we thought generous. I'm not sure how I felt about the duck salami, as I personally prefer pork with my cheeses and it was a little drier than pork. The duck was a friend choice, but it was good for what it was! Lovely, intimate atmosphere. The perfect way to end our Griffith Observatory trip where the three of us singles bemoaned what a perfect date we all just had together. Staff is very friendly and is knowledgeable about their wines. No menu, they just go off of what you like. They will give you a small tasting and if you don't like it, you can move on to another tasting. For those winos out there, they have a decent Petit Verdot and Cab Franc that my friends and I truly enjoyed. It went perfect for our cheese and meat plate we ordered. I've seen bigger meat and cheese boards from other places, but the flavor was great and decently priced at $25 or a selection of 5 mix and match. They have a small outside patio in the front, which is also dog friendly! We went fairly early on Saturday (around 6pm) and by 8pm the place was starting to get pretty crowded. I was here earlier this week with some friends. I really like the concept of this bar...there are no menus available, you tell the bartenders (or wine experts) what kind of wine you like and they bring samples for you until you find a wine that you want to order a glass of. When you come inside Covell, there's a sign in the middle of the bar that says "Order Here". However, in spite of this big sign I walked all the way around the bar and approached a woman and asked her where to order. She graciously directed me to the middle of the bar. Once I got to the right place to order, I began to pester the wine expert. I'm not a big wine drinker. There are only three types of wine that I'm familiar with: moscato, pinot grigio and riesling. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and try to find a wine other than the three I always get. The poor man brought me numerous different types of wine before I finally gave up and just ordered moscato. After I finished my moscato, I went back to the bar again. This time I tried 2 different types of wines before I again settled on a wine I was familiar with (riesling). Alas. The wine expert who was bringing me samples was great though. He was good-humored, friendly and helpful. Covell is pretty laidback. There are tables and places to sit at the bar inside and there's also a small amount of seating outside in front. It was pretty crowded the night I was there so we were standing in the outside area. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try any of the food but I'll probably try some when I come back. Very disappointed in the service . So a friend found a comedy show at this bar . Honestly, we were all excited. The location was a little difficult to find because it's subtle. But when you enter , the bar looks great, you get a Harry Potter tavern meets prohibition era vibe. Since I couldn't find the comedy show, I asked the bartender if I could ask him a question. He was not approachable and he said he was really busy right now.Making the situation awkward. It wasn't until a comedy host approached us and let us know there was a comedy and pointed the way. Very nice and welcoming of him. Now here's where it gets worse. Two of our friends went to go buy drinks at the bar. There were 7 other people at the bar and they were ignored the entire time. I think the space is too small for the crowd it attracts and the prices are a little steep, but it is a wine bar so if you're a wannabe sommelier, then I'm sure you can appreciate their vast selection of wines. I however, enjoy a good dive so the prices kind of annoy me. I've tried many of their bar nibbles, like the spicy mac n' cheese which is excellent. Their mozerella salad is also a favorite. Think light plates to compliment the drinks. I find that service is so-so, but that probably has more to do with it being crowded all the time. Do you like wine? Do you prefer someone to serve you who is really knowledgable about wine over just pointing to something on a menu which may or may not be to your liking? Well, good. You should, because this place does not have a wine menu. Knowing this going in (thanks, trusty fellow Yelp-ers!), my friend and I each coincidentally told our sommelier/bartender that we both like malbecs. He brought out two different bottles, one a malbec, and one more of a petite syrah. Even though both were tasty, as it turns out, we both preferred the malbec. On to the cheese plate. Now, I have to tell you, despite growing up in the midwest, I was not a fan of cheese for most of my life. As such, I am still pretty choosy about the kinds of cheese that cross my lips. I inquired about the cheeses, upon which the bartender was fairly educated, and he assured me were all soft to mid-hardness. No cheddar here -- whew! The plate arrived with honey, pistachios, a long, thin slice of apricot (which I only wished was more spreadable), and some thin apple slices. It was easily the best cheese plate I have ever had in my life. Seriously, delicious. Overall: + Upscale creative/hipster ambience (not annoying, just people with good taste) + Amazing small plates (can't wait to try other menu items) + Impressive craft beer list (mostly west coast) + Delicious wine (Try as many samples as you like! Or so I've heard...) - A hair of a point off because it was really hot in the there when we came in (due to small space, packed crowd, and plenty of heat from candles). It was just busy enough that most tables and stools were filled, but not so busy that we weren't able to find seating soon after arriving. I definitely liked the vibe of this place, but not sure how I feel about the lack of a wine list. On the one hand, I can appreciate their confidence in helping to guide someone towards what they are looking for, on the other, part of me finds looking at a list helps narrow down exactly what I'm in the mood for. Unfortunately I wasn't able to judge their expertise for myself because they had TAPS on draft (I believe the Biere de Luxe, but forget by now) so there was no need for wine. While I've been here a couple times now, it's only been for drinks, so I believe another return is in order to sample their food and give a more thorough and updated review. read more

We just went here for a nightcap. Okay, the good parts first. The atmosphere is wonderful. It's a grownup crowd enjoying good wine and a handful of tasty beer offerings. They pour beer properly into proper glasses. The staff is friendly. Does not have TVs. Monday nights have a chill vibe. The bad: THE PRICES ARE ABUSIVE. We had a cheese and "meat" tray that cost us $15. Here's what was on the plate: eight paper thin pieces of salami (each about the size of a silver dollar). Three ONE INCH wedges of cheese, a pat of butter, a few pistachios and four teeny weeny gerkins. Oh, and there was about six inches of cheap store bought white baguette. However there didn't seem to be a wine menu so I asked the bartender for a suggestion for a robust red. It was really crowded and loud - kind of hard to hear. The wine was great but had I known it was going to be $15 a glass, I might have ordered something else. I returned for a second glass to try another red and got to taste two new wines. I had a really great experience at Covell! I drank exactly what I wanted for the first and left the next glass up to the bartender. I just wanted to try something different and he nailed it! I noticed in other reviews people feel weird about the fact that they have no menu but this is the ultimate freedom! You can drink what ever you want and they don't give off the wine snob vibe in there at all! I'm sure if you said you wanted to drink something that tastes like cigarettes they would abide. They have some suggestion chalked up on the board if you're feeling super indecisive. The staff is super friendly. They filled my water glass multiple times and actually gave me the water before I even asked. As soon as I finished my last sip of wine someone was there to help me out. Went here after work with a few coworkers super early, and the entire place was ours. Place is uber chic with low lighting. We sat in the corner, where we had a full view of the entire place. Because it was our first time there, we didn't know the ordering system. Apparently, there isn't a "wait staff". You sidle up to the bar, tell them what you like and then they give you a few small pours, enough to whet the palate and to make a decision. Told the bartender, Drago, we were in a celebratory mood, so he broke out a few sparkling wines. We all agreed on one, and the bottle was brought to our table in a lovely wine bucket. It was a lovely start to the evening, and we finished that bottle relatively quick! Went back to order another bottle, but something different. Drago's suggestion? A sparkling red! Me and the girls loved it! Also ordered some food to go with the new bottle: spicy mac 'n cheese, meat and cheese plate, and the veggie pizzette. For a wine and beer bar, food can be a secondary focus. However, the MNC was creamy and had great kick; the meat and cheese plates were generous. The weak point was the veggie pizzette which to me was just bland. As the evening went on, the place got really hopping and LOUD. At some point, we were all yelling at each other! However, it was not a place for young hipsters, but for working professionals and Los Feliz locals. A pretty upscale place... This place isn't cheap. A glass of wine is about $12/glass...YOWZA. Pretty pricey, and that's why we decided to to do the bottles. Food price points were much more reasonable. My coworkers and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening...cool place with a great selection of wine and beers and surprisingly decent food.
