Wow. I'm stunned. I stopped in to meet a friend at the bar for a drink around 8:45 Saturday night so he could grab dinner and go we could catch up at this local establishment I hadn't been to for years but have a history with going back close to 40 years. At one point my friend got up and asked a very (very) loud table behind us if they could lower their volume just a bit just because we had a hard time hearing each other. Respectful request and not obnoxious about it. The bartender admonished us! He said we had no right to talk to other patrons and that if we didn't like the volume we could move elsewhere and nothing should interfere with the table. I saw nothing wrong with the simple request and someone from their (very drunk) table even offered to pick up our tab, seemingly acknowledging they were being obnoxious. Things weird with the bartender and he was mad at us for merely asking them to tone it down. As we left we Said how shocked we were at our treatment and yes, I did say f-u. Bartender followed us out of the bar and told me I should never again return. I'm 60 years old and not used to being 86'd from bars. Absolutely shocking and I will never return. I will think fondly of the old days of crogans where I used to drink beers with vida blue and other local celebrities post A's games. read more

We had a large group graduation dinner for my 8th grader for 13 people. Finding a spot that can cater to that isn't always easy and I'm new to the area. Their menu options made it easy for everyone to like for our group. I made a reservation and Crogans accommodated flawlessly. The table was even ready early as I wasn't sure exactly when the ceremony would be over before dinner. And the server did great serving young ones in our party that wanted to order food early when we were doing our drink orders. Being I organized the dinner they made me look good to the family. Decided to give this place another shot. At least it's consistent. It's still bad. Who has a Friday special of prime rib on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and mess it up Friday? The plate came out looking beautiful. The prime rib was warm, the au jus was like warm tap water, green beans lukewarm and who messes up a baked potato? It was under cooked and hard. Not only my plate, my husband's plate was equally bad. I felt bad for our waitress. We ended up paying for a single glass of wine and leaving for another restaurant. Ok, and we had the last two prime rib slices at 7pm.? M... ok. You may want to let customers know... get it early or you may get the sad, cold, last two slices. Sad. If you're not a dog friendly person, I suggest you not come here as the patio area by the bar is pet friendly and there were quite a few dogs. Ordered sweet potato fries and the calamari. Sadly I was disappointed in this place. I was referred here many people, so I deceived to take and one of kids with me. The place is super cute and had a bar area. Our waitress was extremely nice but soft spoken. It took her 15-20 minutes to bring 1 sprite & when we ordered she failed to mention that the Rocky Mountain chicken i ordered would take 40 minutes to cook. It was frustrating seeing people come in after us ordering and eating before us. However the fried zucchini was fresh and good. Finally our food came and it looks beautiful, but the spinach was was to garlicly and the "scalloped" potatoes were dry and not very good. But the chicken was cooked perfectly. But the service was extremely slow and my little guy couldn't get a refill or his extra ketchup. Over all I won't be coming back, But hey it's worth a try, a lot of people love it here. Such a fun neighborhood bar & grill! I don't spend too much time in Montclair, but I would happily return to this area to hit up Crogan's again. I stopped in on Friday night after work to feed my belly and to blow off some steam, and the place was hoppin'! When you enter, the dining area is to your left and the bar is to your right. It's so amazing how much the two sides can contrast each other! The dining area is beautifully set with hunter green table cloths and wine glasses, while the bar is a bit more divey and casual. I hung out at the bar and the scene was definitely a lively one! If you're looking to catch a game or to have a drink with friends, Crogan's is a great spot to do so! They have a nice looking happy hour from 4-6 that I'm looking forward to trying at some point. I arrived after 6:30, so unfortunately I missed it this time around. I'm not really big on salads but for some reason, I had a hankering for one. I decided to order their bay shrimp avocado salad and it turned out to be really tasty. First off, that sucker was HUGE! If you're looking for something on the "lighter" side, don't assume that the salads here aren't filling because they are. And to me, that's actually a great thing because one of the main reasons why I don't usually eat salads is because more often than not, I'm left feeling still hungry after them. This salad was topped with a bay shrimp and remoulade mixture which was different but still very enjoyable. I guess you could compare it that of a shrimp louie salad but with less fixings. The avocado was fresh and served over a bed of mixed greens and salad veggies. I couldn't even finish it, so I took that bad boy to-go and had it the next day for lunch. Leftovers for the win! I can't forget to mention the complimentary bread and butter. It wasn't the best bread in the world, but it was a hefty portion and it was free! That was good enough for me. Now, about those drinks; STRONG AF! If you can't handle that, I would stick to beer or wine. But to be honest, the bartender filled my wine glass up to the brim! It was like having two glasses of wine instead of one. Their wine list is decent, but nothing to really rave about. They had some nice beers on drafts though. I probably would have gotten a beer but I just wasn't in a "beery" mood. I also had their Cucumber Breeze cocktail which consisted of Tangueray gin, soda, muddled cucumber and lemon served on the rock. Wooo baby! I rarely ever drink gin and this had me hot! It was still tasty nonetheless. The muddled cucumber paired with lemon gave it a very refreshing taste. Generally speaking, the atmosphere in the bar was really fun. A few loud drunkards, but nothing too extreme. The bartender was awesome! Really friendly and totally on it despite how busy it was. The hostess was really sweet as well. I cannot believe how bad this place has gotten. I keep telling myself, "it's just bar food, it's pretty ok, service is good..." yet every time I am disappointed, more so than the last! I tried twice in one week. Only bc of the sporting events. The burger was just ok, with way too much soggy bread. Second time I thought I would go for the chicken breast sandwich, it was unbelievably disgusting with a small chicken breast, rubbery and dry on a large sourdough bun with everything else trying to hide the fact that the chicken was non-existent, WRONG! I usually don't eat bacon but thought I'd indulge and what a mistake. Dry, fat, trying yet again to cover up the crappy chicken, or lack of., Never again. Classy Irish pub fare that is thriving in the heart of the Oakland Hill's tony neighborhood of Montclair, Crogan's Montclair Restaurant & Bar is a local watering hole that needs to be discovered and enjoyed by more locals. I was hanging out with friends after attending an Oakland A's game and they asked me if I wanted to hang out afterwards for an early dinner and they suggested we drive up to Crogan's, not knowing what to expect, I was game. They suggested Crogan's not only because they serve affordable meals at all times of the day, but they are the rare sports bar meets family dining destination thanks to the two areas of their restaurant one with a full working bar and another with a large yet somehow quite dining room. Since we were with a small yet very well behaved child, we actually requested to sit in the bar area and they acquiesced reasonably well mainly because we knew our little tike was going to make a mess and that was better reserved for the bar area. Plus, it was rather early in the evening and not many live sports events were playing on the television sets that dot the bar and and so the place wasn't too packed with people. After perusing the menu, there was one thing that I instantly noticed right off the bat, how affordable everything was, from their Seafood dishes to other dishes from their Beef, Poultry and Pork sections of their menu, the average price was roughly 21 dollars and most prices for dishes were under 20 dollars. So that was an unexpected plus when I considered what to eat for dinner this evening. After looking everything over I decided to go with their Reuben Sandwich, which had all the fixings of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing that was in addition to a side of sweet potato fries. All of this for less than 15 dollars and I was sold. Others in my party decided to order their Fish Tacos with the choice of beer-battered wild Pacific cod in two flour tortillas and all the fixings, in addition to the Shepherd's Pie, which was the traditional beef steak stew with onions, carrots, celery, and peas topped with a heaping of mashed potatoes. In fact when that dish was brought out, I instantly got envious and wished I had order that dish as it was the same price and again provided for a huge amount of food. Crogan's Montclair Restaurant & Bar feels like an old time tavern or that classic Irish pub that fees like celebrating St. Patrick's Day every day that just happens to be located in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods and toniest shopping areas in the entire city of Oakland. And this is very much a good thing as it seems like they have been hosting local patrons and big family gatherings for generations. I had so much food left over that it served as my lunch for the very next day and place like this which give you two meals for the price of one need to be celebrated in this time and location, so you better believe that Crogran's will be a neighborhood gem that I plan on visiting time and again! read more

Crogan's was my favorite local restaurant. The food is clean and always very good quality. It was my go-to place for all celebrations. They don't put a lot of sugar in their food, which accommodates my sugar allergy. However, when they started charging about $15 for wedge of iceberg lettuce and then $9.86 for sweet potato fries - it was simply too much. I know food prices have gone up but nearly $10 for sweet potato fries - that is just insane. I may slip up and go back once or twice a year - but I'm not going in there a few days a week anymore. And when friends want to get together, Crogan's is no longer on our list of possibilities. This is really sad. The people that work here are nice, everything is clean, and the food is decent. How I miss the good old days of going by Crogan's. It is not user friendly with my social security budget. read more

This review is seriously overdue. I've been going to Crogan's since I moved to California in 2009. It hasn't changed much and, within the context of what it is, that's a high compliment. When my kids were little, it was such an easy restaurant to take them to for dinner, especially when single-dadding. The staff is welcoming and helpful and do their jobs well. Now that my kids are pre-teen/teen, they still ask to go to Crogan's from time to time. The staff has seen them grow up (and I guess seen me grow up too!), and we're always recognized and welcomed when we visit. The onion soup has been a staple and is consistently good. I enjoy the wedge salad. Sometimes topped with steak. My son is big on the golden bear burger. My daughter alternates between the baby back ribs and various pasta dishes. The martinis are quite solid and a large selection of wines. But, for me, it all comes down to the people operating the restaurant. Mike has been a constant (at least, when not in Oregon) and several long time staff members continue to provide friendly service. Went here twice, here was my experience: Food: Chicken sandwich was super dry, difficult to eat without a glass of water to wash it down. Calamari was chewy and overcooked. Clam chowder arrived to the table with very less pieces of clam and looked like it had been sitting out with that skin forming on the top. Fish and chips: fish was fried well, however for the prices they charge, it should be fresh french fries, these were obviously frozen that weren't very good. You get better fries at a drive-through. Service: genuinely service is ok, however when the server brought the clamari, one piece fell on the table and he picked it up and put it back on the plate with his bare hands!!! I couldn't believe it! I hate complaining at restaurants and was convinced not to, but that was unbelievable. Really wanted to give this place a chance and I know they can do better, but probably won't be coming back. Very disappointed. read more

It seems like this restaurant deserves a bump in ratings. We came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and sat outside in their covered patio. The host and servers were awesome, one guy that looked like he might be in high school and two young women that were super attentive. They brought out an ice water in a paper container for our dog and continuously refilled it which was great on a hot day. They also made sure to check on us several times without being overbearing and were fast to deliver drinks and food. The cocktail I ordered wasn't the strongest, but it was a spritz and it was refreshing. We ordered the French dip, Reuben sandwich, and club sandwich, and they were all pretty good. Really tender beef in the French dip, the corned beef a bit salty in the Reuben sandwich but still very good, and a good standard club sandwich. My order at Crogin's is pretty consistent and their food is consistently good. I like the iceberg wedge ... crisp fresh lettuce with bacon, tomato, and blue cheese dressing (it could use some crumbled blue cheese) followed by the ribs or the burger cooked to order. On occasion I'll have the french onion soup which is very filling and a big salad, either the cobb or the steak. My friends start with martinis followed by the baby back ribs or the pulled bbq pork sandwich, both very succulent. The service is 5 stars and the bartenders are terrific and the food is consistently served hot. So why 3 stars, well last night my burger plate had more "stuff" on the plate than burger... three ramekins with condiments ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, and one larger ramekin for coleslaw and and lettuce onion and pickle and then the burger. The crowded plate was not appetizing at all, looked more like stacked dishes being cleared from table. Anyway, the burger was like a "kid size meal" very small. I'd suggest serving the burger on a smaller plate and making it the "star" with just pickles, lettuce and tomato. For the record I will be back and I would easily pay a few more bucks for a decent sized burger. And if you want a signature dish, add a fried egg on top for another 2 bucks! Thx read more

We got takeout delivered from Crogan's and found it pleasant. We tend to order a lot at once and reheat in subsequent day or so, which was not kind to some of these dishes, and that's not their fault! Probably better to eat them all right away. In a sweet gesture, our order included two free chocolate chip cookies, nothing exciting but what a nice surprise. The cardboard takeout containers were really not up to the food, so we ended up with a very messy spill, be warned. Beet salad: nice mix of beets, tomatoes and greens, I would have enjoyed more cheese. The dressing had a smoky and I didn't enjoy that, overall wouldn't order again. Same smoky dressing also on the Greek salad which was otherwise enjoyable. Pan fried barramundi fish was overcooked but still good, the Brussels sprouts that came with it were delicious, also came with rice. However, the side of Brussels sprouts we ordered as a separate dish was too spicy even for my adventurous spouse. French dip sandwich was fun and tasty, might be a slightly too scant dinner for a really hungry day. Iceberg wedge salad was delicious, tomatoes were a bit mushy but would definitely order again. Apple walnut salad was perfectly fine. Chicken with mashed potatoes and spinach was fine, reheating in microwave didn't do it any favors, but it was all a touch underseasoned to me. Short rib was tender and hearty, we would eat again, my spouse liked the bacon spinach salad also although the spinach didn't hold up very well in the fridge for a couple of days. Chicken piccata was my favorite, well seasoned and with zingy lemon and caper flavor, and I liked the broccoli side. Neighborhood Bar & Grill in the Monclair Village of Oakland! Being that I work in the Village, I've had lunch here quit a few times, but i had not been here in about a year! So, my co-worker and i decided to come here yesterday when we were craving a "larger" lunch than usual, plus someone was treating us :) Walked in and everything looked pretty much the same. The establishment is separated into 2 spaces - the bar and the dining area. The place always looks nice & clean and the staff is always friendly. I decided to order the 12 oz. Rib-Eye steak with scalloped potatoes and spicy string beans ... I know what you're thinking, 12 oz. steak for lunch? YES don't judge me!!... and my co-worker ordered the pan fried Barramundi with brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. Both dishes were good. My steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked medium-rare, the way a steak should ALWAYS be cooked! (that could be a debate, i know, don't get me started). My only complaint is that my potatoes were under cooked, they were still pretty hard. Good visit, i left satisfied, but I do think they are a bit over-priced- their bar prices are pretty steep too. Had some difficulty with Grubhub and my credit card number being used for other, nonrestaurant venues. Spoke to the manager, Mike Williams, and discovered that orders through that service never include the restaurant getting the credit card number. I guess somebody in Grubhub managed to use it for their own criminal activity. All's removed from my card. I am so relieved! What I want to say here is that Mike Williams was perfect when I called to warn him. He was pleasant, explained the process and well, what a guy! Just right for a manager... It was my first time back to Crogan's since before March 2020. I am still incredibly cautious about where I'll go, but really wanted to go to lunch with a friend. Thank you, Crogan's, we were so pleased. We were offered a choice of eating in our outisde, we chose inside. The tables are very well spaced, the table cloths are gone, which was fine, but the cloth napkins remain, which I appreciated. The food was up to it's usually standard. I was delighted especially to see that the New England Clam Chowder was as delicious as ever; real pieces of clam, perfectly seasoned with no need of extra salt. We split the roast beef au jus. It was delivered a bit soon, as we'd not yet finished our soup, and could have been a bit hotter so that the cheese was melted, but the au jus was very good. We had the coleslaw; very good. I liked that it wasn't overdressed, but could have been dressed just a touch more. For dessert, we split the warm apple tart a la mode. It was delicious and just the right temperature. We each had an Arnold Palmer which was perfectly made, the waiter remembering one of us only wanting a little ice, and asked whether we wanted refills without our needing to bring it to the waiter's attention. So let me talk about the waitstaff. It is their staff that brings me back over and over. Their staff is polite, attentive, friendly, not intrusive but there when you need something. There are willing to make suggestions or offer opinions and have never steered me wrong. I truly commend the management of Crogan's for their excellent staff and hope they are being paid very well. Bravo and please thank them for me. While my rating is actually a 4.5 because of the roast beef, I rounded up to 5 stars because of the staff. I shall be back soon. read more

Has really gone down hill...in the last couple of months I've been twice (the second time because I wanted to give it another chance) but found them to be lacking. Both times I had the fish tacos...first time the fish was burnt and tasted like it...awful. But I said hey could be a bad night, so I tried again...second time although fish was not burnt, one taco just had shredded lettuce and nothing else (very dry) and the second taco had everything it was supposed to, like the guacamole, pico de gallo, etc...unfortunately I didn't notice the first one was lacking until I had the second one...I had even asked for more sauce as the first one was so dry...anyway, never again...the service is excellent but unfortunately the value is just not there. read more

closest thing to an Irish bar you could find in Oakland..... fun ambiance and great beer kind-of loud but it's OK staff are pretty friendly and good work in the kitchen serving appetizers and dinners to satisfy anyones appetite! definitely a fun experience. 3 years in Montclair and our first trip to Crogan's to meet some friends who live on Park. The dining room was pretty full and the dining crowd seemed on the older side when we got there ~7PM on a Wednesday. We were able to grab a table in the bar and decided to eat there rather than wait for a table in the dining room. We split some Fried Calamari ($8.95) and then for mains I got the Golden Bear Burger (1/2 lb Niman Ranch Angus Chuck with Cheddar, Grilled Onions, and Bacon, $13.95) with Sweet Potato Fries (choice of SPF, regular fries or cole slaw), the g/f ordered a bowl of Clam Chowder ($7.95. Cup is $5.95), one friend got the Reuben ($9.95) with cole slaw and his wife ordered French Onion Soup ($7.95). What's up with bowls of soup for dinner?!? The Calamari were pretty good. Very tender "meat" and a cocktail sauce with a good horseradish kick. A couple seemed a little undercooked. My burger was not so good. The waitress asked and I specified Medium-Rare. This was a well done hockey puck. The lettuce was pale and the tomato hard. I didn't use either. I slathered on some ketchup and dijon and concentrated on the tasty sweet potato fries. The other items were more successful. Both soups were tasty with the chowder thick and creamy with a good amount of clams and the French onion savory with the mix of Swiss & parm cheeses. The Reuben was also deemed "good"; I didn't try it, but it was polished off at warp speed. Our server was very friendly. First of all, please know that I love Crogan's. It has been a staple in the community for years. That said, it pains me to write this. This evening, two of the three people in our party ordered the short rib. What arrived was not short rib, but pot roast. I know the difference. Our guest also noticed that the meat we were served was not short rib. In the past, their short rib offering was tender, unctuous, slightly fatty, and melt in your mouth delicious. This meat was not that. It was a huge chunk of stringy, dry, well seasoned meat. I could not eat it, and simply opted to take it home. When I inquired about it, the waitress asked the kitchen and told me that the recipe changed. (What does that mean? Does that account for the diced carrots in the au jus?) I was still curious as this cut of meat was so obviously NOT a short rib. I asked her if she could please ask the kitchen for me what had changed, as I was wondering. I was told that the previous cook had cut the meat differently, and that the portion was smaller before. That's all. Ultimately, I was disappointed, as was our guest. We came in expecting to order a delicious dish that we had eaten previously but felt that this was so off the mark, it seemed like a bait and switch. Maybe this is due to supply line issues? Maybe they couldn't get the short rib meat they always had before? M. It would have been OK (if not preferable) to simply say that they were out of short rib this evening. We would have ordered something else. The rest of the dish was wonderful. The spinach was cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes were delightful. The staff are always warm and friendly. We want to love this place, but inconsistency like this will kill a business. Please, Crogan's don't go walking down this path. It is a slippery slope. Met up with a friend about a month ago over here. I ordered fish and chips and fried calamari. Both were good. Also ordered 2 drinks (Jameson and Ginger and a Moscow Mule). They were both strong. They had plenty of outdoor seating. There were TVs showing the news too. read more
