If you are near this shop, go in and get yourself a sweet treat. Even if you aren't craving one at the moment, the donuts are good the next day as well. It's a cute and cozy little space, we didn't stay in though. We bought a few items and left. The woman behind the counter was friendly and helpful, she even tossed a couple of donut holes for use to try. I'm glad she did because they were fantastic. The food is so good. They make fillable donuts, but they don't prefill them! So my husband wanted a custard cream donut so she asked him if he wanted a plain glaze, a chocolate covered, or a maple covered one. He picked a plain glaze and she pulled a plain glazed long one from the tray and took it to the back to fill it. You can get it with a variety of other fillings like raspberry jam. This place is right next door to my vet's office. They have morning hours like most donut places, so they're usually closed when I bring my dogs next door. Saturday morning was a treat. They were open, so I stopped in. What a fantastic selection. I wish I had remembered to take pics. My fav coconut donuts, old fashioned, cinnamon rolls were my special treats. Was craving some Sunday morning donuts and kolaches and saw a review that the kolaches were good here so we had to stop by! We got the Boudin kolache, a spinach and cheese danish, and a regular sausage kolache for comparison. All were good! Was also very excited to try a mochinut here for the first time (so nice and crispy + slightly chewy QQ). Best mochi (rice) donuts in town, hands down. Crispy, chewy but still light, icing is a nice compliment but not too much or too sweet. The flavors are subtle so don't be afraid to pick up a couple you might not normally gravitate towards if they're out of what you initially wanted. (Only downside is that they do tend to run out and they aren't always ready right at opening time- 7 AM is when I was told) I like the Milk Tea but the sugar, taro, coffee, and mango ones are also good. The other stuff is also good- I like the kolaches and donuts and sometimes get some of those, but the gems here are the mochi donuts for sure. We first discovered this spot when our toddler was taking lessons at the original Emler Swim place around the corner. His reward for dealing with swim lessons he didn't particularly enjoy at the time was a sweet treat afterward. The toddler is now an almost 5th grader who loves to swim, and Emler has moved to new digs down the road, but Crown Donuts is still here and is now my go to pastry stop when I'm headed over to visit my daddy at his assisted living place nearby. My most recent visit was around 8:30a on a weekday. The morning rush had gone and I was the lone customer, but the case still had plenty of super fresh, round & filled donuts of all types, though the fritters were just about gone. Besides donuts, holes, twists, eclairs and the like, they also had a nice selection of meat-filled "kolaches" (or "klobásníky" as those in the know would call any savory Czech pastry) of several sizes. I asked the sweet proprietor if everything was freshly made that morning, and she responded with, "Of course! Of course!" I felt kinda bad for asking, but I had to do it, as I've been burned too many times by fly-by-night shops attempting to pass off their day-olds as fresh.... My order was a dozen assorted donuts, both glazed and "fancy", 2 bags of holes (a set of glazed, a set of blueberry cake), and a small jalapeño & cheese sausage kolache. Despite my irritating question, the madame threw in a gigantic footlong twist for free and offered to heat up my savory item for me. When I said I'd heat it when I got to the office, she offered advice on timing (15 seconds in the microwave, no more). Dad and his friends were very pleased to receive their dozen, especially Dad for his fancy coconut-topped number. The office-mates also had plenty of favorable comments on the holes & twists, both for texture & flavor. Not to be outdone, the kolache was fan-freaking-tastic, with a spicy zing, a nice snap to the sausage, and a heavenly soft yeast roll surround. If you're in the area in the morning, Crown Donut is definitely worth the stop. read more

First, the donuts aren't gonna impress you, but they are super solid. Tastes like a lot of other donut places and lack any original flavors, but you'd won't be disappointed (but you won't be particularly delighted). BUT WHAT'S AWESOME is the Boudain kolache! This is one I haven't seen at any other kolache place. As someone who loves novelty, I was absolutely delighted. Then I was supremely pleased to bite into it, and it's super tasty with a satisfying texture! So yummy, I now have a reason to stop by here again in the future. read more

When I moved to north Austin, I really missed being near Ken's Donuts for my weekend sugary pastry fix. Surrounded by Krispy Kreme and Dunkin, I thought great donuts were always going to be a long drive for me. Then I discovered the tiny strip mall gem of Crown Donuts. The small, bright store has a great selection of fresh donuts in all the classic icing/topping/filling combinations. The glazed cake donuts are so tender and sweet that they'll change your life. Only two disappointments: 1) the cream cheese kolache, which was filled with straight up unsweetened cream cheese. I prefer my cream cheese filling to be very sweet inside a sweet pastry. 2) The chocolate eclair, which isn't an eclair at all... there's no filling inside. It's basically a chocolate covered donut shaped like a log instead of a donut. Other than those two items, everything we got was fantastic, including cinnamon twists, chocolate-covered sour cream cake, plain glazed, and chocolate-covered with peanut topping. read more

I picked up some donuts and kolaches yesterday morning for my birthday. They have lots of types of donuts to choose from with various toppings and fillings. They also have several types of kolaches with sausage or ham, wrapped in your typical dough or a croissant, or with jalapenos added. I was able to get a jelly filled donut, strawberry-topped cake donut, one regular sausage/cheese kolache, one croissant sausage/cheese kolache, and one regular jalapeno/sausage/cheese kolache plus a chocolate milk for $7 and some change. Not too bad, but the kolaches are pretty small for being $1.09-$1.19 each. They still taste better than Shipley's, so they've got that going for 'em. I like that the filled donuts aren't filled yet. They had some cute decorations on the tops of the donuts (see photo) and I was able to pick whichever decorated one I wanted and have them fill it with one of three jelly flavors (raspberry, lemon, and something else). This place scored 3 F's in my book... Fast, Friendly, and Frugal. The service was excellent - smiling faces and quick to help, but didn't rush me as I gazed over the sugary delights. Prices were better than most shops I've been in, and the donuts were fresh and delicious. Light and fluffy and tasty. I am glad to see this place hopping on a Saturday morning, despite one of the large chains moving in across the street not long ago. Crown Donuts is a hot name around the Austin area... perhaps they are all part of the same entity. Nonetheless, I always think donut shops vary a little in variety and execution, though I assume the recipe is almost always the exact same. The flavor profile never changes. With this regularity being so...regular in donut shops alike, I always want to shoot for anything small, anything boasting an abundance of chocolate, and anything with the likes of fritter in the name. Beyond that, I don't have an exact order or formula by which to judge the fried dough joints in Austin. This establishment offers chocolate cake and blueberry cake holes, and that is definitely a nice touch. At $0.25 a piece, they are certainly a touch more costly than most, but the fact that you can get cake style little guys is quite good. They were about what you expect... caky and fluffy. The apple fritter was poorly glazed. And by glazed, I mean dunked. Dunked in a bath of syrup. Not sticky, tasty syrup. Grossly liquidy syrup. Far too soaked was the fritter in this case. For anyone dropping his or her children off at any of the elementary schools in this land north of Austin (which I often just call "Southwest Round Rock", CD is a fine stop, but it definitely doesn't come up to superb standards. read more

I got a plain cake and a eclair with chocolate frosting and custard filling. Those two cost me $1.99. So check for good prices! The eclair was really good. Probably one of the best I've tried. Not too much filling, and the icing was just right. The donut itself seemed like it'd been cooked a little longer than normal, so there were a few crunchy bits which was fine with me! The plain cake wasn't my favorite, but my sister liked it. I thought it lacked flavor-- like they probably didn't put as much nutmeg in the dough. It was also cooked longer than others I've had.
