Service started off well, but we eventually had to follow up on our food when we noticed that every other table had already been served before us. We were also surprised to see a 20% service charge added to the bill for just three people. As for the food, it was just okay overall, though at the price point, I expected more. The garlic noodles were tasty, but the so-called "signature" crab puffs were disappointing. We couldn't taste any crab at all--it was essentially a cream cheese wonton dressed up with a fancy name and priced at $18 for four pieces. The truffle chicken dumplings were another letdown. There was no truffle flavor, and the crispy top wasn't actually crispy as it looked. It almost seemed like the topping was added on afterward rather than cooked together. The shaking beef was decent, but the portion was tiny for $45. The salad was what I liked the most. We had a fantastic dinner at the new Crustacean in the Financial District. The food was super tasty - our favorites were the tuna cigars (fun presentation!), the langoustine appetizer with caviar, the wagyu beef dumplings, the crab (served with the crab meat removed from the shell!) and of course the famed garlic noodles. Our favorite dessert was the chocolate cake with ice cream -- super decadent! The decor in the restaurant was extremely beautiful and we loved the high ceilings and big windows that let in the evening light. Our server was also a sweetheart. Can't wait to come back! read more

Honestly not sure where people are going for all the "amazing" food they keep describing in San Francisco but we didn't think much of this spot. Considering the lunch was around $160 and we tried around 4 plates and 2 cocktails each I'd say we got a good variety of things. The "crab puffs" and just cream cheese wontons that maybe have real crab. Nothing else notable really, drinks like the Elote one just taste like mezcal which I love but for $20 and the sell of an elote type drink it didn't come through. We've tried so many well reviewed restaurants at this point I think this is probably up to most places standards and flavors but I think it really lacked any complexity. Also service was just OK. Barely attentive, drinks took around 10-15 minutes each time and they were not busy. I don't like to rag on restaurants but do want to give an honest opinion. read more

After many years at their old location Crustaceans has moved into their new location in the Financial District. The new location is sophisticated, well appointed with stylish new decor and mood lighting and they have new and expanded food and drink options. They still have their secret menu options of Garlic Roasted and Garlic Noodles and other traditional items While offering a variety of new appetizers and new entrees. The new location also offers ample street parking and near by parking garages. They also have reinstated their old dress code, but are being understanding for customers who are unaware of the change. I spent several days attempting to coordinate a birthday celebration for a party of 10-12 people scheduled for the day before Valentine's Day. From the beginning, communication was disorganized and misleading. I was repeatedly told that someone--specifically a manager or the large-party point of contact--would call me back to confirm availability and finalize the reservation. That call never came. Not once. Each time I called, I spoke with the same gentleman who answers the phone between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. He consistently assured me that my information had been passed along and that I would receive a return call shortly. I was patient, understanding that restaurants are busy, but after the fourth and fifth calls, it became clear that these assurances were not truthful. Promising a call back with no intention of following through is not a communication issue--it's dishonesty. The final call was the most frustrating. After days of being given the runaround, I was abruptly told, "It's Valentine's weekend--we're not talking large party reservations." This policy was never mentioned during any of the prior conversations. Had this been communicated honestly and upfront, I could have made alternative plans. Instead, my time was wasted, and a birthday celebration was nearly derailed due to poor internal communication and a complete lack of accountability. What makes this situation especially disappointing is that this was entirely preventable. A simple, transparent response from the start would have been sufficient. Instead, I was met with evasiveness, false promises, and an unprofessional tone that reflects poorly on management. Customer service here is beyond unacceptable. There is no excuse for misleading guests, failing to return calls, or dismissing legitimate inquiries with last-minute policy explanations. If this is how they handle reservations and communication, it raises serious concerns about how guests are valued overall. An uneventful dinner at the overly rated new location of Crustacean on Pine Street with very average food and a seabass (although it looked great and very appetising) which had to be sent back to the kitchen because it literally tasted like dishwashing soap! As an apology for the bad seabass, they offered a plate of cauliflower which was more of an insult than anything. The waiter was very kind and we were surprised that no one from management came to apologise - the waiter was the only one who spoke to us and we appreciated his attentiveness. There was no explanation for the bad seabass even though we asked, we were told that the kitchen made no comments on the dish indicating that they didn't seem to care. This restaurant continues to ride on its successes and reputation of the past which have been long lost! I came here with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday. Immediately upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by to well dressed hosts who led us to the bar for a cocktail while we waited on the other guests to arrive. My first impression of the restaurant was "wow this is gorgeous ". Dim lighting, beautiful artworks & a glamorous bar. Their cocktails were different & delicious. I tried the strawberry fields which was the right amount of sweetness. We tried a variety of appetizers but my favorite were the spicy butter chicken dumplings- they came with this delicious tamarind sauce that I would love so put on everything & the shrimp & lobster dumplings. We tried the Caesar salad which was a different take on it as it didn't have kale or lettuce but instead had shaved Kohlrabi, I enjoyed it but my friend was hoping for some greens. We also tried multiple entrees. The tumeric lemongrass branzino was perfectly crisp on the skin and moist and flaky on the inside, also the sauce went perfectly with it. The shaken beef was so flavorful, the mix of the sweet and salty sauce with the pepper and onions was great. & lastly the garlic noodles were perfectly garlicky. For dessert we tried the fried bananas with ice cream which was the perfect combo of salty and sweet. I've been going here for years. The food and service are good. The garlic crab is my favorite. Unfortunately, after a recent dinner visit, I do have a few negative things to share. One, automatically adding 20% to the bill for a party of 2 is ridiculous. Tipping needs to be left with the customer, not the restaurant. Second, their "dress code" is a joke. Based on their website, it sounded like they strictly enforced their stated dress code. Based on that, we dressed up for the occasion even though we were walking around Pier 39 a few hours before dinner. When we arrived, many customers were wearing jeans, shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes. When I asked our server about it, he said they don't enforce their dress code anymore after receiving lots of complaints. I have no problem with allowing customers to be comfortable and to wear casual clothes. But hey Crustacean, update your website! Don't continue to try to represent that you are some high end restaurant that demands its customers adhere to a certain dress code. You owe it to your customers to be honest about what they should expect when they arrive. read more

Crustacean seems to have forgotten its roots from the old days on Polk Street. The new dining room is lovely, but the food, service and definitely the value was lacking. The butter chicken dumplings were dry, tough and totally devoid of flavor. Thankfully, they were taken off our bill, but the server didn't even apologize! She said, "I have no power, I will get my manager". Any decent server would say "I am sorry that it was not to your liking. Please let me ask my manager to speak with you about how to improve your experience." It's simple training, and for a place that charges $48 for a 4 oz piece of cod, you would expect that of the waitstaff. Overall it is underwhelming and overpriced - more for the bridge and tunnel crowd looking for an SF dining experience, and not a local with high standards! Go to PPQ Dungeness instead! read more

It's been over 2 years since I last ate at Crustacean. Since then they have moved to a new location in the Financial district. The new place is very swanky and more upscale than the old place. Service is excellent. I went for dinner in the middle of the week without a reservation and was able to be seated right away. I'd recommend getting a reservation to be sure to get a table. The staff check on you often which I appreciated. Very friendly. The food was as good as I remember it. I got the Tiger Prawns with AN's Famous Garlic Noodles, Creme Brulee, and Wild Yunnan Red Tea. The couple seated at the table next to me were there for the first time. They ordered the Tuna Cigars, Bo Kho Dumplings, Garlic Noodles, and the Dungeness Crab and they loved all of it. I tried the "Vietnamese" Negroni, which was presented as having a heavy lemongrass flavor to it. Although it was a very very delicious Negroni, I did not pick up on lemongrass at all. I ordered a second nonetheless as it was an excellent concoction. I was initially trying to order their Christmas drink special , featured and highlighted at the top of the drink menu. But was told they were no longer serving it because it was only a Christmas special. I ate here tonight on January 1st, why is it still on the menu then? Then I requested their wifi info and was told they did not have it. Seemingly little things but for the price point, these are fairly basic things. Steak was ok, I asked for medium rare and it tasted more like medium to medium well. The place is certainly beautiful with elegant decor and lighting. All in all, it was good enough. Nothing bad but nothing incredibly mind blowing. With the brand, I suppose my expectations were a little higher. Would I return? Only if I was with someone who wanted to check it out. Both my partner and I remembered the price on an entree being $10 less on our menus than we were charged, and we told the waiter. A few minutes later, he brought a laser-printed menu with the higher price on it. When we got home, we looked on the website and sure enough, it was the lower price. We came here on a Saturday night, no reservations and was seated at the bar, which was the best, as the bartenders were very friendly and welcoming. We order the garlic crab and garlic noddles with the prawns. This was the best crab and garlic noodles we have had in a long time. We have had a lot of seafood and this place is now one of our favorites. The food came out quick and the drinks were delicious as well! This is one of my favorite restaurants in SF. I used to go to their old Polk Street location all the time, and I was excited to check out the newly opened spot. The interior and atmosphere have completely changed it's way more upscale now, and I absolutely loved it. The garlic noodles were, as usual, well done, as were the crabs and the seafood fried rice. The mussel appetizer (on garlic bread) was outstanding. I thought service was only ok. Came here Saturday night and the new space is absolutely beautiful--modern, upscale, and a whole vibe. The ambiance alone makes you feel like you're about to have a top-tier dining experience. The crab, garlic noodles, and crab fried rice never miss. I also tried the Brussels sprouts/cauliflower mix--more cauliflower than Brussels, but still good. Disappointed to see the crab cakes are no longer on the menu. They have a crab puff on the menu now, tried it won't try it again, they can hold that! The service at the bar was mediocre at best. I asked for my leftovers to be boxed up and also ordered garlic noodles to go. They don't package food in front of you, so I didn't check the bag. After getting home (about 200 miles away), I realized the garlic noodles I paid for were missing. It's not about the $20--it's about the principle. This is an elevated dining experience with elevated pricing and automatic gratuity (mine was about $80), so accuracy and attention to detail should match that level. Paying for something you didn't receive, with no way to resolve it, is frustrating and ultimately what made this my worst experience here. Overall: Beautiful restaurant and consistently good food, but service and follow-through need to match the price point. I am writing to bring to your attention an experience I recently had while attempting to make a reservation at Crustacean. I have been trying for over three weeks to secure a reservation for a party of ten to celebrate my birthday. Following the instructions on your website, which advise guests with larger parties to contact the restaurant directly, I have called the restaurant multiple times in an effort to arrange this reservation. During one of my most recent calls, I was advised to call after 4:30 p.m. and ask for a manager. When I did so, a staff member named Kai answered the phone. I politely asked if I could speak with a manager regarding a reservation for a large party. Kai informed me that the managers were busy and could not come to the phone, and that I should call back later. When I attempted to ask a few clarifying questions so I could better understand the process and determine the best time to call back, Kai began laughing and stated, "I'm hanging up, I have to go back to work," before ending the call. Concerned by this interaction, I called back and respectfully asked Kai to please have the manager on duty come to the phone, explaining that I had been trying for weeks to make a reservation and needed assistance. Eventually, Tom came to the phone. I shared my concerns with him regarding the interaction and asked if he could provide the general manager's contact information so I could follow up directly. I also expressed that Kai's behavior was dismissive and unprofessional. Unfortunately, the situation was somewhat brushed aside, and when I asked for the employee's name, Tom initially stated he was unsure who had answered the phone. After I questioned how that could be possible, he then confirmed the employee's name as Kai. As someone who has always heard wonderful things about Crustacean and was truly looking forward to celebrating my birthday there, this experience was very disappointing. I understand that restaurants can become busy, especially during peak hours, but the manner in which my call was handled felt dismissive and unprofessional. Guests should feel welcomed and assisted when reaching out, particularly when making arrangements for a special occasion. I still hope to celebrate my birthday at Crustacean if possible, but this experience has given me some hesitation. I would greatly appreciate some clarification on the proper protocol for making reservations for parties of eight or more so that I can ensure I am following the correct process. This restaurant is absolutely amazing. We ordered quite the food selection beginning with tuna cigars followed by crab, fried rice and the signature garlic noodles. The food was delicious. We shared the 3 dishes amongst 3 people and that was plenty. Our server was very knowledgeable on the menu and was great at suggesting certain dishes based on our preferences which included giving us the best aesthetic drinks and appetizers. The restaurant is stunning with great spots for pictures. The only hard part was finding parking on a late weekend night, but I called the restaurant and the host was able to share that any street parking was free for parking. read more

Trader Joe's frozen dinners are better, which isn't surprising given that they premade their meals and thawed them in an oven and/or microwave just like I would with Trader Joe's foods. The pasta was flavorless, the crab tasted almost like faux-meat, and the dumplings were almost Walmart-tier frozen. The server was rude, and shocked when I said the meal was bad. 20% gratuity forced, which is funny because paying for this food at all is charity (unfortunately without a worthy cause). I wish I could negative tip. The only saving grace was the environment, but the food-ambiance contrast made the quality of the entrees even more noticeably poor. We were seated a booth which was very comfortable. The food was amazing, I highly recommend the tuna cigars, calamari and Caesar salad (their version). Of course we had the crab and the garlic noodles, they were simply amazing. Garlic crab is a very poplar dish in the bay area, I have had it at many places. I have to say this is the best. Amazing Service, when you walk in you're greeting right away. I had a reservation for 5:30PM, but arrived at 5:45PM due to traffic and finding parking. I called them to let them know about traffic and asked about where to park. Upon seating, the ambiance was very nice and loved the decor. I'm always curious to see how Vietnamese Modern restaurants perform in terms of food quality and service. This place I can say has amazing and attentive service. Food was amazing as well. Highly recommend the crab, prime rib, and sea bass. The garlic noodles were okay. I had better else where but everything else was amazing. We were celebrating my girlfriend's birthday and they brought out a fried banana dessert with a candle. The fried banana was AMAZING. The manager is horrible, my reservation was at 8:30pm I called because we knew we would be running late the manager gave the phone to a girl and that person said we had to be there by 8:40pm she told me there was parks available in the yellow when I got there no parks where available, I arrived in the door at 8:38pm I told the girl my reservation name she runs to the back and walks back out with the manager and he says he sat the last person at 8:30pm then walks away, I looked at the girl and asked her where you the one I was on the phone with and told me to get there by 8:40pm she smiled and said yes, I wanted to crash out but I didn't I sat there for a min at the bar because I just drove a very long distance for my boyfriends birthday dinner, the bartender gave me a menu asking if I would like to order anything and the manager came up to the bartender to whisper in his ear not to serve me after that the manger kept walking back and forth from the front to the back , the last time he walked up I let him know what the girl on the phone said he said I know but I sat the last person down at 8:36 , I thought he said 8:30 the last time horrible management, they should of just said no and I would had canceled it's not that serious for that dry ass food read more
