I'm an avid Culture fan and truly believe they serve a superior cookie! Their chocolate chip is one of the best, if not the best, that I've tried in NYC. That said, this was my first visit to Culture 36. Spacious layout with beach, counter, table and communal seating options. I tangled with the strawberry white chocolate and peanut butter varieties this visit: Strawberry white chocolate: Strawberry desserts are uncommon (and a personal fave), so I had to get the cookie. It was excellent and semi-reminiscent of Betty Crocker's strawberry cake mix with its smooth flavor and light pink hue. Peanut Butter: A dense, heavily peanut butter rich flavor with no nuts. It's almost like eating baked peanut butter. Thumbs up on both, if you like those flavors. The oatmeal cranberry and chocolate chip are still my never fail picks every time. read more

They are probably one of the most solid cookies in the area and while there are some varieties I would honestly recommend their classic chocolate chip. It's warm and has a gooey center and has some crisp to the far edges. The cafe itself was small and has some seating and music playing. Seems like a standard working cafe though not my cup of tea. Culture 36 serves really great coffee. I got an iced latte and it was just perfect. No notes. Also tried their Black + White cookie which is like a gooey s'mores flavor..it's to die for!! They're friendly and quick with the orders. The branding is also cool and memorable. Love that their cookie bag has the art fully covering it. The "Americano" wasn't an Americano at all -- it was instant coffee, made by pouring hot water into a cup and adding a dollop of coffee powder. When I added oat milk, it immediately separated and curdled, making the drink undrinkable. The blueberry muffin was okay but nothing memorable. It tasted like the kind you'd pick up in a supermarket six‑pack rather than something freshly baked. Overall, the visit felt overpriced and underwhelming. This might be one of the best chocolate chip cookies I've ever had. It was so warm and chock full of gooey chocolate. Also tried the peanut butter cookie, good and a little salty, but I wish it was warmed as well. And if you're not in the mood for coffee I ordered the iced blood orange tea sweetened with simple syrup and it was so refreshing! What a great spot! I was in the city and looking for a place to hang with my friend for a bit and she suggested this place. It's really casual - good for coffee and a little treat. There's a bit of seating, but it's a smaller space, so not a ton. The service was quick, so no issues on that end. We ended up trying the chocolate chip cookie, which was absolutely bomb. We were seeking snacks and thanks to Yelp, I was reminded of the location closer to Penn Station where we just happened to be. The sole employee was incredibly nice and polite. He even gave us our choice of gooey (warm) or less gooey (room temp) chocolate chip cookies. While more challenging to consume, gooey is the answer! I was surprised that Culture 36 wasn't as busy as Bryant Park but that made it easy to nab a seat, and it was quieter and more laid-back. All of the seating options involved stools. Had to make a stop here to try the "best cookies in NYC"! By the time we went (noon on Sunday), a lot of the cookies and pastries were sold out - luckily we got our hands on a Corn Cookie and freshly baked/out of the oven Black and White Cookie. The Black and White Cookie definitely caters to a more sweet tooth cookie lover - it was perfectly moist and soft. The Corn Cookie had a lot more harder exterior and the texture resembled cornmeal or cornbread still with that just right amount of sweetness. I wanted to like this place. I have mixed feelings. Perhaps I was given high expectations about their cookie being way better than that of Levain's. I can't say it was the best cookie in NYC. The cookie was good and better when it was slightly warmed. When I tried it again 30 minutes, it didn't taste the same. I can't say that I enjoyed their coffee either. I stopped by recently to grab a cookie and a cortado. One thing that confused me that I immediately realized stepping in was that they're a sister shop of Culture Espresso. It's a lot larger than Culture Espresso, so plenty of seating to grab a coffee and chill. The cortado was solid, nice full-bodied flavor, a bit on the darker side. My friend and I stopped by Culture 36 after seeing positive Google and Yelp reviews. Also, we needed our afternoon coffee. My friend got a drip coffee which was disgustingly acidic and bitter all at once, which was thoroughly unpleasant. She threw it out before she consumed half of it. I got a double espresso shot for $4 and it was a much, much, stronger version of my friend's drip coffee, which means it's 10x the acidity and bitterness. I took a couple sips before my taste buds gave out. Quite rancid and not worth the money. I can go to Starbucks for this quality of espresso for a cheaper price. Maybe Culture 36 is known for their lattes or baked goods, but it most certainly does not specialize in black coffee drinks. read more

COOKIE REVIEW: I had heard that Culture supposedly has one of the best chocolate chip cookies in NYC-fact or fiction? I had to see for myself....but since I was there I had to try more than one cookie: Oatmeal Cookie: definitely a really good oatmeal cookie that is nice and chewy and not overly sweet. Chocolate Chip: the verdict? I really enjoyed it. My preferred cookie is usually a bit more gooey and thick, but these are crunchy on the outside with melty chips on the inside-not super gooey but definitely chocolatey and tasty, but nothing super special The verdict? Good cookies. I'm not sure if I'd put the chocolate chip on the "best" list but I'd still recommend for a solid cookie. Be sure to microwave them for 10-15 seconds for optimal gooey-ness! read more

Came by for coffee and a pastry the other day and it was a decent experience. The coffee shop is tucked away, and is more of a locals spot. Staff wore one glove and was friendly. The original (I believe) Culture on 38th st. was my absolute go-to for coffee and the occasional cookie or muffin practically every workday for many years. My company moved to Hudson Yards in Feb. 2020, so obviously I hadn't had much time at all in that office before moving to remote work, but that was enough time to discover that Culture 36 would not be an uncomfortable Bizzaro Culture experience for me, but rather featured the same incredible coffee, perfectly-made cortados and best chocolate chip cookies in the world, all with that excellent Culture service. I soon found myself once again going out of my way and passing other, closer coffee shops to come here. They are that good. In a nutshell: Transparent, yet easy-to-miss coffee shop, that somehow does not utilize the good space it has. THE BAD 36th street between 6th avenue all the way to 9th is packed with homeless people and junkies. It is not so much that you feel threatened except perhaps being asked for money, but more about seeing junkies "using" and that is something no one wants to see let alone if you're with kids. Although this social situation affects NYC at large, and there are many who are already unfazed by people in pain it is nonetheless a choice of the owner/s to select that particular location. I do get the neighborhood is highly touristy but even tourists I've seen avoid 36th street, once they notice the scene. Unless you're looking for that place, it is very easy to miss, as the matter of fact, I walked past it a thousand times until I saw someone coming out of there with coffee in hand. THE GOOD The quality of the coffee is better than the one found at other coffee shop chains but by no means remarkable either. The space is beautifully lit and their baked goods options are their forté. Apparently, their infamous chocolate chip cookie won a prize or award and I can tell why it is decadent chocolate ambrosia wrapped in a semi-soft shell... nothing better fresh out of the over. I have seen some people work from there, the times I've visited but without electrical sockets, your time there will be dictated by your laptop's battery or ability to hold liquids, as they do not have a bathroom. I would say that Culture, as a brand has potential because there is still an indie vibe to it that typically fades as a company becomes too large. The space is conducive to having more chairs, perhaps the music can be conducive for people to hang there... otherwise is a place to grab your stuff and leave immediately. Aside from the chocolate chip cookie and better-than-average but still not excellent cappuccinos, there is still work to be done -considering moving the location- in order for Culture to reach its full potential. read more

This afternoon, I went out to get an iced coffee. I stood in front of the counter waiting to order, but no one came to help me for a while--even though they clearly saw me. The iced coffee itself had a kind of burnt taste. The café is popular because it has a nice atmosphere, but honestly, the food and drinks aren't anything special. The staff wasn't friendly either. This was really cute place to visit. It wasn't far from my hotel so I decided to stop in on my last day and I am so happy that I did. Unfortunately because of COVID there were absolutely no seating. This was mainly a order and leave kinda cafe due to the situation. HOWEVER, the service was outstanding! The cashier/barista was so nice and he was great company! I had no idea what to order because of all of the options but he made it so easy and even talked me into getting a cookie too. I got a flat white latte and a normal coffee with a chocolate chip cookie. The coffee was great and perfect! I didn't even need more cream or sugar! Not going to lie.. the cookie was not my favorite. The barista said they were known for their cookies but I hope that isn't the truth because it was not for me... Definitely will go back to Culture 36 when I'm back in town read more

It's good to be back in NYC enjoying the hustle and bustle in another amazing coffee shop :) This is a branch of the amazing Culture Espresso, and is located along midtown-West side. Pretty close to Penn station if you're looking for a good pick-me-up in the area. This shop is a small space, but decent size for NYC. Depending on the time of day it can be busy or slow. When I arrived there was a small line and seats were filled inside. But after a few minutes of waiting I was able to get seated with a friend. There's a large glass window with booth seating to people watch or have a good convo, and there is a large table space in the center for people to do work. There are a few 2 people seating tables along the side as well for those who want a bit more privacy. The coffee is AMAZING here. The baristas are fantastic. They make amazing espressos in a quick amount of time in the business of the lines of people. And they get their beans from Heart Coffee Roasters out in Portland, Oregon. For those of you who are still new to the coffee world - let's just sat Heart Coffee is one of the best out west, if not in the states :P I ordered a macchiato and was made to perfection :) They are also known for their amazing Chocolate Chip cookies and Oatmeal Cranberry cookies. My friend ordered the chocolate chip cookie, and I had a few bites of it :P It was delicious! It was nice and warm on the outside, and warm and gooey on the inside with a ton of chocolate chips. Macchiato and cookie - my cup of tea. The barista also told me they won the Cookie Competition this past year..apparently it's the new cookie and better than Levain Bakery's cookie now! I have tried both and going to be honest - hard to judge which is the better cookie. All that to say, please do yourself a favor and get a cookie with your espresso drink..you won't regret it. They also have amazing baked goods around the City from places like Ceci Cela, Blue Sky Bakery, Ovenly, Dough Doughnuts, Corner Café, and Magpies. There are also two more locations in midtown-west area. I haven't checked out the other places, but imagine it's just as amazing. I'm a pretty hardcore Stumptown fan, but this might be my new fav in NYC.
