"Amazing", "The best cupcake ever!" These were the responses when everyone I've known has tasted cupcakes from this shop. I've been to this location twice and I visited the Berkeley location today, and I'm told they also sell at Berkeley Bowl. My first visit was a little rough, although the cupcakes were still GREAT. The owner Lila is very open to hearing feedback and really values her customers and that made me feel really good about returning. I've tried almost every flavor and EVERY SINGLE ONE IS AMAZING Definitely a go to spot if your looking for cupcakes! I need to see if they do the key lime pie in cake form because I can't get enough of that! read more

Came into the swan market to eat some curry with my husband when I noticed this little cupcake shop. Since my curry was going to take a while, I hopped into the cupcake lane, thinking it'd take but a minute to purchase a sweet treat. The shop is cute with a wonderful display of colorful cupcakes. I waited behind everyone when the lady at the counter asked us to move. We moved to theory designated area which was narrow and blocking the hall. I'm basically squished between the shop and their marked line. The people in front of me move again because they are uncomfortable, and I follow so I can keep my spot in line. But then, we're told to move back to the narrow space yet again, so everyone does so, but they are all cramped, and I can hear the folks complaining in front of me. Despite it being a small shop, it did take a while before it was my turn. And come to find out they don't take cash. I really wish they had a big sign that said no cash. It would have been helpful. A kind lady offered to pay for my cupcake. However, I felt too bad to accept and just ran to get my credit card. The whole experience just turned more into a hassle than anything. Finally, I got a single $4.50 lemon blackberry cupcake. But sadly, it just wasn't for me. Cupcake felt more wet than what I'm used to. Just WHAT?? These cupcakes are so freaking delicious!! I discovered this place while walking by and ordered the lemon blueberry cupcake (seasonal) and it was probably the most delicious cupcake I've ever eaten. The tartness, sweetness, custard goodness were perfectly blended and the cupcake itself was so spongy and moist (sorry for those of you who hate that word but there's no other perfect description). First time stopping here! Cute lil stop in the old Oakland Swan Market. Got here right before closing (6pm) and they were almost sold out so very limited flavors to choose from but still tasty! Variety of flavors, minis and regular sizes, and gluten free options. Staff is super nice and the area is very clean and well set up. Hope to be back! read more

I'm officially hooked. I hate that my boss discovered this place and told me about it, but I also love her for it! I went to the Berkeley location two days ago and ended up getting more from the Oakland location today. My coworker heard me raving about these so much that she decided to surprise us all with cupcakes. And being the sweetheart she is, she gave me two....the double chocolate because I had mentioned it was one of my favorites, and a red velvet because I said I still needed to try it. The cupcakes here were just as amazing and beautiful as the Berkeley location. They were very sweet and took her order over the phone at 1:30pm for a 2:00pm pick up. I have been talking about these cupcakes constantly and i've gotten 5 people to go there and try them. My friends know if I'm truly obsessed about anything, it must be good...food wise! Came here a few times because their cupcakes are delicious. I've ordered for big events from here as well. Located at the heart of Swan's Market in downtown Oakland. The service is usually on point but why the 2 star review? I came in today at around 1:30 pm to grab some cupcakes for the kiddos. It wasn't busy, we only had 1 customer in front of us. I ordered half a dozen mini cupcakes assorted. She put them in a box and sealed it with their sticker. When I got home and opened them up, the cupcakes were a mess. There was no insert that usually holds the cupcakes in place. Did they run out? If so why didn't she tell me? Did she forget? All the cupcakes were upside down, frosting all smeared and stuck together. Glad I wasn't grabbing these for anyone else, it would've been an embarrassing ordeal. A bit disappointing since one of my sons doesn't like salted caramel and he wouldn't eat it since it was on every cupcake now. I've attached a photo for reference. read more

I am a fan of Cupcakin' Bake Shop in Berkeley but yesterday I was at the Oakland store. It's not my first time there either. I feel like I was cheated on and inappropriately treated. I got 12 cupcakes for my friend's birthday. Surprisingly there is no loyalty program at this store? The little iPad screen for entering a phone number wasn't there but I just saw it earlier when I was entering the line. It seems like the staff suddenly just took it off the table and the store wasn't nearly at the closing time. I am not sure what's going on here. I sent a direct message to their social media page but no answer. So be sure to ask about the loyalty program if case they still have it or hide it again. read more

Came here for the first time a few weeks ago to get some treats for my boyfriend's birthday. We recently moved across the street so figured I would get him a few mini cupcakes which sounded good! I ended up with 3 chocolate, one vanilla, one red velvet and one chocolate salted caramel. We ate them on his birthday night and really enjoyed all the flavors- the icing in particular was amazing, and the little cakes themselves were really moist. Pricing was also decent, especially for the quality. Went back to Swan's a few weeks later and split a pumpkin spice cupcake for dessert- again, the cream cheese icing knocked it out of the park and the cake itself was so tender and delicious. I reviewed the other shop by mistake and complained about the pricing and the fact they solicit tips when you pay by card. However, after trying a few more cupcake places, I have since reevaluated what I said earlier. First, it seems that most of the artisanal cupcake shops charge around $3-$4 per cupcake. While that seems a bit steep, it is the going rate if you want really good cupcake. Also, compared to what other shops charge for pastries, it's not really overpriced relative to what's out there. Second, the places I've been to also have the tipping screen on their payment system. So, it's not only this place that does that and I can't fault them for what is probably inherent in their billing software. Aside from the foregoing, the cupcakes here are superior. The key lime and vegan coconuts are standouts. I thought the cupcakes at Angel were pretty good, but I have to say that the Cupcakin cupcakes are better, if not slightly more expensive. If you want to indulge, I'd do it here. read more

Holy sweet baby Jesus, these cupcakes were sooooo goood! I came here during AfroTech and while waiting for my Japense food i decided to hop in line to try a few cupcakes. I ordered the salted caramel and the key lime cupcakes. I honestly don't remember the price but they were worth it, i've even pay more to have these cupcakes again! The salted caramel has the perfect balance of salty and sweet (this can easily be messed up) and the vanilla sponge cake was perfect. Now the key lime cupcake blew my head off -- the frosting and the surprise of key lime curd in the middle this cupcake was phenomenal and a flavor i have not had before so I appreciated that very much. The next time I make it over the bridge to Oakland I will definitely go out of my way to come back to try new flavors! read more

We've only been here twice but it's already one of my top 3 cupcake spots around! I love their key lime and red velvet cupcakes, which are their most popular flavors. If we're in the area, I always look forward to bringing home a cupcake or two (or three) home to the city. The key lime is slightly tangy, not overly sweet, and comes with a graham cracker crust on the bottom. We even ate one the day after buying it and it wasn't dry at all, much to our surprise.
