passing through and staying the night before heading back home after a long drive. This is the last stop. As we drove into town we saw the restaurant sign but didn't give it more thought. After check-in to hotel we were searching through Google and yelp and this place e came up as Malaysian food. Some of the dishes were hard to find even in the diversed dining scene in SF bay area. The place was hard to get by if you are coming for the north because of the traffc lights. First impression that this is a Thai restaurant more than Malaysian as Yelp described it. Oncw we were seated, we noticed the food brought out were good portions and from a distance they all looked good. Since the restaurant claims to be a Malaysian fusion, we ordered the malaysian dishes, beef satay,nashi lemak (that's how it was spelled out on the menu, local Malay would have spelled it as 'Nasi"), Penang chow kueh teow, and Singapore fried mee hoon (the only non Malaysian dish). The beef satay was tender, with a slight hint of lemon grass and just amount of spice not to overwhelm the beef. Nicely done. But the peanut sauce was a slight disappointment. It was just too watery. The local version, even the Thai version would have been thicker so that the sauce can cling to the satay. As a result, we can't taste the sauce. The satay was only came with 3 skewers fewer than the other satay order I have experienced. For the meat, I give it 4 but the whole dish, with the watery sauce, I have to give it only 2.5 . The Nasi lemak...the rice was good. It had the right amoubt of coconut, serve don banana leaf! A rare touch in a small town where banana leaf must be hard to find. Unfortunately the sambal ikan bilis, I realized it must be some dish that is made and kept in the fridge but alas a few days too long. The curry chicken on the side was more Thai curry, it was cooked with tomato, an ingredient that is rarely used. For this I give it 2.5. . The Penang chow kueh teow, it smelled great, and it was stirrd fried with lots of squid and prawn. The waiter did say it was done with fat rice noodles...but the disappointed dish was fine ino pad Thai style thin rice noodles. Had it been stirred fried with a bit of belachan, it should have made it really authentic! For this I give it a 3.5 The Singapore mee hoon...I have to preface that I have not had a good authentic Singapore meen hoon outside of the region. But I also thought Singapore fried mee hoon is only known outside of Singapore and I have never find a version that I like. Most places would simply use the yellow curry powder to stir fry the rice noodle with some meat and veggies. Curry Leaf's version is not that. It is similar to the taste of the Penang chow kueh teow but this is a vegetarian version (as we chose not to add any meat). I give this a 3 The service was good. The waiter was friendly and the place is clean and had a nice ambiance.for that I give it 4 Overall, I give it 3 If you are hungry for some south east Asian food in a seaside town, I would say go for it...I would ask the waiter how long the sambal ikan has been in the fridge? read more

First time visit at Curry Leaf and I was very excited to find Asian Noodles that hit the spot. We are in a bit of a dry area for Asian food and I've been unhappy with all the noodles in our area. No more! I'll be hitting Curry leaf for my noodle cravings from now on. The rest of the menu was very appetizer focused which is fun if you're looking for a small plate meal. Worst food, if you can call it that, ever. Went first day they were open, terrible. Went against instinct and tried again. Calamari was wet and fully cooked. Served us sh!t that didn't even remeble chicken and threw up in the restaurant. Spoiled meat. I can go on but save yourself time, money and even your curiosity. Absolutley Disgusting. We were very disappointed in every dish we had gotten.. the soup dumplings were cold and the dough was raw, so it was filled with a gelatinous cold soup, we told the waitress and she told the kitchen, they said we were wrong. So saying you have seasonal DimSum on the menu is a complete lie. The only good thing was the Sake. I'd rather drive 4+ hours in a bomb cyclone for authentic DimSum then eat here every again. read more

I was so excited for this place to open up. I'm sad to say it fell a bit short of expectations. I think this is an example of just trying to do too much on a menu instead of putting out really good food with fewer options. We ordered tons of stuff and the take away was.... Pad Thai not bad. Very underwhelmed by dim sum across the board with a few big flops ( the cabbage wraps). All of the chicken in the curry, pad Thai and rice dish was breaded and very gloopy. Beautiful decor and great service can't make up for the cooking. In a place called "curry leaf" you'd expect to see some serious curry dishes on offer. Here, there's one on the menu - in a kind of brown gravy that didn't look or taste anything like curry. I was hungry and left half of it on my plate. Bland with very little spice. A noodle dish I tried last time was a B- at best. I don't like leaving negative reviews, but this place needs a real Indian chef with some serious dedication to actual curry. read more

My husband and I had dinner here this evening after our patient told us about this place. We were very pleased to find a nice, clean, cozy atmosphere. We weren't sure what to order, all the dish descriptions sound amazing. The owner Joe Tan, recommended the steam soup dumpling, it's not in a "soup" but rather the dumpling itself is soupy. It was absolutely delicious so we ordered an extra! The dumpling came with a tasty tangy ginger sauce, so amazing! We also ordered Salt & Pepper Calamari (it's diced bell peppers and not spicy or heavy black peppers). We ate it all up before we remembered to take a photo. It was very crispy, not oily and very flavorful with slight sweet/light salty flavor. For main course we had pineapple fried rice without the added extra protein along with Sweet and Sour chicken. The Sweet and Sour chicken was very authentic in flavor . We had Sake with our dinner, the 'Tears of Dawn", you can't miss this if you are a sake lover! The presentation on wooden box to appreciate the aroma of this sake just takes you to another level, it was truly an enjoyable experience! Idk why all the hate. This place is one of my favorites. The ramen is the best in town, the portions are huge and everything tasted great. The service was also friendly and accommodating for my toddler. They brought her egg quickly because they could see that she was hungry. It's also well decorated and I like the music. Food was absolutely delicious! Went in during lunch and food came out very fast. So excited to have a restaurant serving Dim Sum!! We got the curry noodle, Tokyo style ramen, calamari and each type of dim sum. Every single dish I tried was better than the last. If you are looking for flavorful, authentic food give this place a try! Also try and be understanding of a brand new restaurant that is short staffed, enjoy some of the delicious sake they offer while you wait! Will be going back again and again until we have the opportunity to try everything on the menu! I also recommend going to the Facebook page " Humboldt Foodies" for actual food reviews. It's okay, I'm Malaysian-Chinese and had actually just gotten back from KL when Curry Leaf opened so I went to go give it a try. I wasn't expecting it to be perfectly authentic- it's still Humboldt county- but it's hardly even Malaysian. At best it's Chinese-American food with slight Malaysian influence. The cook is from Malacca, which has some of the best food I've ever eaten in my life, so frankly i expected better. Would you put mustard or mayo on the OUTSIDE of a sandwich or ketchup on the top of your hamburger bun? No, you would never do that. It's disrespectful and inconsiderate to the person your serving and shows a lack of understand of the dinning experience. I ordered the pork belly bao and there was two different sauces messily drizzled of the outer surface of the bun, making it bot only imposible to eat but also required 20 napkins to remove the sauce from my hands and face not to mention having to make a trip to the sink to wash my habds and face. Delicious but I would never recommend this to a friend unless they made it easier to eat. read more

Not good in my experience. Ate lunch there with a group, they only had a small selection to order from vs. what was on their menu. I ordered sushi & was told they didn't have any! I returned later, at dinner a month or so later, curious if their sushi was good-they have an extensive menu. After ordering a mango sushi roll, when it came, I was told they didn't have pickled ginger & no mango for the sushi. Those were the 2 things I was most looking forward to! But, they had already delivered my sushi by then. I tried it, but wasn't good. When I was checked back up on by the waiter, I told him I had tried it & it wasn't at all what I was expecting & that I wasn't interested in having any more. He looked perplex & asked if I wanted to keep it, box it, or... I said, no, I'd like to return it to the kitchen, this isn't what I'd ordered, I gave it a try, but nicely explained that it wasn't what I'd ordered/wasn't good. They didn't charge me for the returned sushi, but I paid for the miso soup & salad I had. After that, made a mental note to not return. I hope that they're fully stocked now for what they have on their menu. I felt deceived but their menu. In two experiences, I couldn't order from the options provided. A disappointment! read more

The food was amazing. Every dish and appetizer we ordered was delicious. We had the Chicken Buns, Spring Rolls, Indian Noodles, and Chow Fun. The main noodle dishes came with a lot of food. The service was good. The waiter was nice and attentive, he brought us everything we asked for. The ambiance is hard for me to judge. I worked at a restaurant in this space many years ago and it looks exactly the same, just more plants. I wasn't there for the ambiance, it was all about the food. So amazing, when you first step in you're immediately greeted with an amazing smell. The food was amazing we goobled it up so fast we forgot to take pictures . My only complaint is they brought the food out at different times. I got my ramen first and it was about 8-10 minutes before our friend got her chicken and then another 4-5 minutes before my boyfriend and his friend of their noodles. Beef Chow Fun is delicious. Best calamari appetizer in Humboldt. My son loves both these dishes and he's a picky eater.
