We had walked by Daisy Mae's two days in a row and something about it kept catching my eye. Perhaps it was how dark it appeared from the outside. The fact it ALWAYS said it was open. I'm unsure what drew me in but I knew I had to visit. After needing a brunch spot I checked the trusty Yelp app and saw all the positive reviews and said okay this is the place. There was a bit of a wait on a Sunday but nothing too crazy. There were signs all over that they were no longer serving alcohol, as well as a permit in the front about maybe starting to serve alcohol again at some point? Very confusing since they had the best bloody mary in 2018 as per their sign. It's a very old-school bare bones type of spot. Grab your own napkins. Light utensils. I was looking to get some good breakfast food here in New Orleans so we decided to go to Daisy Mae's, which was right down the street from the hotel. I wish I hadn't. First sign of not good food in a restaurant is that if it's empty, turn around and go somewhere else. I got the Shrimp and grits and expected to be blown away. Yeah I was highly disappointed. Shrimp is small and that upsets me because for a city to be on the gulf, I'm expecting huge shrimp. Wife had chicken and waffles and the waffles were cakey. I stopped by here a few weeks back and wanted to try their Cajun omelette and the alligator sausage(first time). I expected more kick from the omelette and was disappointed in the lack of flavor. They do earn themselves a star foe the alligator sausage, didn't know what to expect but it was well cooked. A little chewier than the typical pork/beef sausage and saltier but all in all it was not bad at all and it was very flavorful. We came across Daisy Mae's after a long walk to try Willie Mae's for brunch, which was unfortunately closed for Easter. We were quite tired and hungry and looking for soul food, and Daisy Mae's happened to pop up on the search, yay! We walked in on that Sunday morning, and it was pretty crowded, but we got seated right away. I had the crab cake benedict with a piece of chicken a la carte just to taste. The inside was fairly dark, especially during lunch hours. Our waitress was friendly and got our food out in reasonable time. The shrimp po'boy was good, but not great. I added some remoulade-like sauce they brought for our fried green tomato appetizer; the po'boy comes with no sauce, but they bring mayo and mustard packets. Speaking of the fried green tomatoes, they were cut too thick so the middles were not cooked (not a good flavor). Their gumbo was average, but at least it was true shrimp/sausage gumbo. The half po'boy and one side meal will run you just under $10. A couple of people in my group got their fried chicken, which they said was average; too heavily breaded. When walking into this restaurant we were quickly shown to our table in this modern diner and noted the eclectic art on the walls-that we later discovered you can purchase! The Crab Cake Eggs Benedict was a great south Louisiono take on Eggs Benedict and the Alligator omelette was a wonderful. With the growing plethora of breakfast and brunch options available in the city these two breakfast dishes are now on my list of best breakfast entrees in greater NOLA. We came here on our last day of vacation for a late breakfast. We had about a 30 minute wait. The restaurant it self is very crowded and kind of hot because the line is out the door and the door is constantly open. We ordered chicken and waffles and country fried steak. This was my first time ever having southern fried chicken and it was THE BEST! The chicken was so tender on the inside and so crispy. There was just a tiny after kick of spicy. It was so good. Went to Daisy Mae's with a group of friends on a Tuesday morning, around 11, and there was no wait. The server's were really friends and helpful, and answered all of our questions about the menu items. I went with the Crab Cake Benedict, which is an Eggs Benedict with Crab Cakes instead of Canadian Bacon. I also ordered a small side of Gumbo. When the food arrived, we saw the portion sizes were sufficient: we definitely got good value. The Benedict was pretty decent, not the best I've ever had but definitely great tasting. The crab cakes were a bit on the blander side--especially compared to the perfect level of seasoning with most seafood in New Orleans. However, it was still a pretty good dish: 4/5. The Gumbo, on the other hand, was overly salted. The flavor itself was amazing, and the quantity for the small was pretty decent, but there was wayyyy too much salt in the dish. Any more salt and it would have been borderline inedible. It would have been a 5/5 gumbo if the sodium content was lower, but that wasn't the case, so: 3/5. My friends ordered other items, such as the fried chicken and the 1/4 lb burger. They had great reviews for the fried chicken, and the burger was pretty solid as well. We all agreed that the Gumbo was pretty good, but unnecessarily overly salted. Based on the feedback of my friends, I would definitely recommend the Fried Chicken! Overall, really good service and food--definitely better options in New Orleans in terms of flavor, but still a great option for authentic southern cuisine. read more

I also ordered a lemonade and when I tasted it, it tasted like water. When I told the server about it, she asked what does it taste like, and I said water. She then said "the machine must be broken. I was in town for a conference and decided to try Daisy Mae's, after reading several reviews. I arrived around 11AM and the restaurant was 1/3 full, so I was expecting attentive and quick service. Boy was I wrong... I ordered the Traditional Eggs Benedict with grits and an extra biscuit. After waiting about 15 minutes, I asked my waitress if she could check on my food and she seemed very perturbed that I was asking and huffed off toward the kitchen. I watched her enter the kitchen and then exit two seconds later, walk to a nearby table covered with silverware and napkins, and begin wrapping silverware, rather than actually checking on my food or providing any updates. After 24 minutes, the cook (not my waitress) finally brought my food to the table. The plate looked good, so I dove in. The first bite of grits was hot, but had absolutely zero seasoning. Super buttery, but very bland. The eggs benedict were warm, not hot. The country ham tasted old and was not very salty. The hollandaise was also lacking in flavor and seasoning. The poached eggs were barely poached and practically raw. I enjoy runny eggs, but not raw eggs. Finally, both biscuits were burnt. They looked burnt, tasted burnt, and were so dried out that they were crunchy. After I had eaten most of the plate, my waitress finally decided to grace me with her presence again. I asked if she had any honey and she said they did not have honey. How are you a breakfast and fried chicken restaurant, but you don't have any honey?!?!? This was the last straw.
