THat stuff about the bread being old is probably not true, because they sell alot of sandwhiches. I suspect they don't make their own braed on the premises, but they do toast the bread and its pretty good bread which is nice. A very tasty melange of flavors, with really fatty meat and crunchy pickled vegetables. For 2.50 its a steal for sandwiches. I've gone here probably at least 20 times now and have tried all of the sandwiches, my favorite is probably the grilled chicken. Its probably my go to vietnamese sandwich in Milpitas. Love this place! My favorite place to grab a quick lunch. It's family owned and operated. They do really take pride in what they do. The food is always great. The service is excellent. The price is the the best in town. They always have fresh food. They throw away food that have expired, unlike other asian places. They do catering too and at a very reasonable price. Everybody in my family knows how much I love this place. They make great spring rolls at a good price for parties and their sandwiches are so good I normally order two. BUT today this place has failed me. I ordered 40 spring rolls cut in half to be picked up at 1130. 1130 comes around and I am waiting at the counter. The lady asks how can I help you and I tell her about my order and she says she thought I was coming at 4. So nothing is ready. She then tells me to come back at noon. My hands-down go-to place for a grilled pork vietnamese sandwich and spring rolls. It's the best-tasting and wallet-friendly meal that one could eat with the healthy factor mixed in. The sandwiches are $2.50 while the spring rolls are $3 for 3 with the peanut sauce. I admit when I have peanut sauce left over, I would drink it down. No shame! Haven't tried the rice dishes or noodle soup dishes because I didn't want to be disappointed for bypassing the sandwiches and spring rolls. But there are people inside eating those dishes so I'm sure they must be worth trying. I only discovered this place a couple years ago since it's not on a main road. But once you know where it is, it's difficult to forget! Service is friendly as they greet you right when you walk in. Most times you'll get your food in about 5 min, but if it gets crowded, it could be a 15 min wait for food. This place is real authentic Vietnamese food. Of course it's a sandwich place, so don't expect any service or so. But everything is really fresh - the Pho soups are delicious. One of the best places I know so far - the "Pate Viet" are fresh and almost made on demand (still very hot when getting them). We've been going to Dakao for years and they treat us like family. The banh mi and goi cuon are items that we order. Items taste great and you can always customize the order exactly the way you want it, no mayo, etc. They always know what we want to get and we always come early in the morning before a long road trip. I'm sorry but I highly question the 4 star rating of this place. Either family members are rating this place high or there are a lot of people out there who have no idea what a good Banh Mi is supposed to taste like. Not only did my food suck, but so did the food of the 4 other people I made the food run for. I'll just rate mine, they can all write their own reviews. 1) I got the beef sandwich - the bread was hard and the beef had ZERO flavor to it. This sandwich was downright hard to eat and hard on my teeth. The bread crumbled all over the place when I bit into it. 2) Chinese sausage spring rolls - these were old, and I do mean old. The meat was foul. When I say "foul" I mean it was bad meat and if I get sick tonight I'll be pissed. The kicker is that I watched the old guy in the back make it so I grabbed it when he set it next to the register thinking it would be nice and fresh. I will never return to this place. I was originally heading to New Bambu but they are closed on Mondays. In the Milpitas/Sunnyvale area you're better off going to Cam Hung or New Bambu. Cheap, good and filling. Prices went up by I think 25 cents since 2007. But a grilled pork sandwich for $2.25 is still a good deal. When I'm low on cash and need something filling and tasty, this is where I go. I have also had the grilled chicken and I get that one regularly. I'm not a fan of the shredded pork as it's too salty. The BBQ pork has that weird fuschia sauce so I don't eat that either. The bubble teas aren't bad but they have a lot of sugar. Their pre-packaged food with rice is ok. I just get weary because I don't know how long it has been out but I have tried it and was ok. The shrimp spring rolls aren't bad either. UPDATE: Had plate 13 with rice noodle, lettuce, sprouts, pork and a cut up eggroll. At $5.50, not bad! Very filling. The pork was actually good, not dry ot fatty. I will and have gone out of my way to come here for the sandwiches. Location - kind of hard to find if it's the first time you been there but it's right of Calaveras so it's not that bad. Ambiance - The place reeks of old country corner store / deli. I don't know if I'd ever eat there. It can get a little busy there with everyone else trying to order sandwiches but it's worth the wait. I have always found the people who work their to be nice and sincere. Food - I don't know anything about a majority of the food there. But I have yet to go wrong with any of the sandwiches - after all it's in their name. It all depends on your taste of the day. i have a soft spot for moms n pops places, this is one of them... so over the yrs i let alot slide by... like bought some food came home n found out a few r moldy... they do sell delicious eggrolls n other food u cant find at other sandwich shop... so i let them be w a review til this mornin... i stopped to grab meatball sandwich for my dad and goat curry for my mom, they live far so whenever im free i do that for my folks... my dad enjoyed his sandwich but my mom n i were doing catch ups, so when we were done she dumped her curry in a bowl to heat up, and at the bottom of the togo cup cus its now clearly on top and we saw clearly left over noodles and meat... my mom told me to stop by n demand an explaination, i did... they swore they sold me newly cooked goat curry, so i said pls explain why there were noodle strands and the ground meat that usually come w noodle... they kept sayin no it was a new batch and that they would never serve old food, i said again, no , i didnt say the curry was old, i asked why was there noodle and pork meat underneath the goat curry??? and she said it couldnt be... i demanded to speak to cook/prep person, and by the way she avoided my question, i knew how it happened... she was eating the curry w noodle when i order and instead of heatin up new curry cus its refrig., so they only heat up a serving when its order, so she dumped what she was eatin, and i know this is a good guess cus, we dont normally eat goat curry w noodle, we eat it w bread or rice, the cook/prep person was jus having her fillin when i came in to place the order... and she dumped what she was eatin in a togo for my mother.... this is nothing new w these old vietnamese establishments... they serve old food to new customers alll the time... this time they missd a few strands of noodle and got caught!!!! i will never go back to this place... and i want everyone to know what they do... they serve u left overs... i caught them today... dont wanna to catch diseases like that... no conscience no biz ethic whatsoever!!!! sad... read more

If the food wasn't so tasty my rating would be much lower, but the delicious flavors prevent me from docking them any more stars for all of the negative qualities about this place. It's a place I both love and hate, which kind of keeps me from visiting more than a couple of times per year. Dropped in today for a takeout lunch. Inside the establishment it smells like wet dog. I have confidence in my nose. Ok, so that should give you a good idea of how good the food is. I'm willing to tolerate the smell of WET DOG and still eat something from this place. I love the broken rice dishes with grilled pork and/or shrimp and/or the beef green onion rolls. All delicious meats here. I've also tasted some of the soups, although none of the ones that contain organ meats. I noticed today that they have a dish that is essentially a porridge with "pig internals". I'm sure it's lovely, but I'm not into that. One of my biggest problems with Dakao II is due to language barriers. I mean I feel almost guilty for being critical of this, but it's really a big problem with the customer service (and probably a big benefit to the taste of the food). On several occasions my order has been messed up - and I normally order by # (i.e. "#24 please"). I want to stress again...this has happened more than once on a simple order. Can be frustrating. Lastly, if you're here with a group of 2 or more, be prepared to get your meals at an up to 10minute separation. They never seem to get all the dishes out at the same time. This most likely means that the dishes are made fresh and spontaneous, and that's a good thing. read more

I come in, they were very nice (not staring at me crazy like most people do when I go into foreign places - because I am white). LOL. I order a BBQ pork sandwich, strawberry boba and some cream puffs. VERY cheap. All that for $6.75. :) But when I opened my sandwich, the bread was HELLA hard. Not crunchy on the outside, but soft on the inside, HELLA hard. Like scrape the top of my mouth, hard. The BBQ pork was a little slimy (that's the only word I can think of to describe it). The veggies were ehh and the over sandwich was poor quality. My boba was actually really good, same with the cream puffs. BUT I cannot give this place any more stars because of that. The one thing you are supposed to be good at is the main entree, main dish. And it was all bad. Maybe they are having an off day... Idk. I really wanted to like this place. I grew up eating here so I'm always going to be a little biased towards Dakao. That being said, I'm going to be fair and doc them one star because they kind of stinge on the filling for their sandwiches, and I have to order my sandwich in fear because the main person who works the front is pretty scary with her mean mugs. My favorite sandwich has got to be the vegetarian shredded pork (banh mi bi chay). This place does it the best! I just wish they will put a little more on the sandwich. I usually get this with the baguette, instead of the regular bread that they use. It's a little extra but totally worth it if you like your bread crunchier. They also have awesome snacks! This is a regular on the work lunch circuit. My favorite of the 3-4 bahn mi shops in this area. Super cheap, tasty sandwiches. I've never ordered the 'regular menu' stuff, but some friends/coworkers who have have always enjoyed their meals. Good bubble tea as well, try the mango shake with pearls. As far as vietnamese sandwiches go, this place has a huge variety. Much more than Lee's or Huong Lan. This is the only vietnamese sandwich place I know which offers tofu in their sandwiches. They also offer fried egg, which you can see in one of the pictures someone added. Prices for the sandwiches are cheap, only $2-$3. They open early on the weekends, which makes it perfect to stop by and grab a sandwich to take on a hiking trip. read more
