My trip to Danny's was enjoyable. Not great, but OK. To start with, it was some of the worst sweet tea I've had in North Carolina. It wasn't very sweet and had that bitter taste tea gets when it's steeped too long. Not a great start. Then, to my surprise, I had to order hushpuppies. They didn't come with the meal. Gasp! I think that might be a sin in some portions of our state. They were yummy, though. I'm extra glad I did because I didn't enjoy the Texas toast. It wasn't really toasted and had almost no butter. So now I've complained enough that you're probably wondering why I gave Danny's 3 stars. The reason is the barbeque itself. It was quite tasty. Tender and juicy. I was pleasantly surprised by the vinegar sauce on the table. It had an unexpected sweetness that I really enjoyed. If I do come back, I'll probably try some of the sides other Yelpers recommended (I didn't love the potato salad I ordered). Or maybe I'll just get some of their delicious pork barbeque and take it home to eat! read more

They probably would get a good review if It didn't take 3 hours for the order to get delivered from Grubhub. Oh wait... it never got delivered. After ordering with more than enough time before closing... we waiting another 3 hours for the order to come. After 3 hours we tried cancelling by calling but the restaurant never answered. Not only was poor customer service an issue but so was the slow service. Absolutely unacceptable. read more

There are alot of places you can find good or even great BBQ. Danny's is no different. What makes Danny's the best is the quality of their sides. ALL of them are excellent. The cole slaw and fired okra are personal favorites. My only suggestion would be to chop the collards less so they were more leafy. read more

We've definitely had much better food than this...too bad! The brisket was tender (a plus!) but it was seriously lacking in flavor. It seemed there wasn't even salt. Meh. Pork ribs were just okay, not falling off the bone either. Double meh. My toddler seemed to enjoy the bean stew and the green beans (although, obviously from a can). The potato salad initially seemed to have some good flavor, but very quickly we were all overwhelmed with the amount of mayonnaise, just way too creamy. Seeing all the other rave reviews I wonder if we just ordered everything completely wrong on the menu, but I doubt the other items could be a ton better. This place is an old favorite and well visited at lunch time by the locals. The food is unique and the service is generally very good. The Pork Sandwich on Texas Toast is good as is the beef biscuit. Perfect with their sweet or hot bbq sauce. My sister had the 2 meat special with fried corn on the cob and potato salad. Potato salad os creamy. I think it must have cream cheese in the recipe.Good service. Our waitress was swift and pleasant. Well worth the price. Cons: It is in a little strip mall. It needs it's own stand alone location. My first ever visit to NC and I need to try BBQ. I mean when you hear NC, you think inexpensive cigs (I don't smoke), friendly people and great BBQ. So for lunch I opted for this place since it was close to my office. Since a bunch of us went it gave me an opty to sample a few apps and definitely try the pulled pork. I sampled the corn nuggets (yum), fried okra (eh) and wing basket (average). Then the real deal came out. I had the pork (to me it's pulled pork) on Texas toast. Don't expect a large size sandwich. Average and it took me about 30 seconds to down it. Their prices are good and the service is friendly, quick and attentive. I will be returning to try some of their other offers. ENJOY! read more

to anyone who hasnt been to Danny's in a while or you are thinking about trying it- read this first. my family and I have been customers of Danny's for over 20 years and we loved the place. today I prdered Danny's and was astounded by the ignorance. first if you call to place a to-go and they put you on hold don't wait at least 10 minutes like I did before hanging up and calling back- she forgot about me. secondly when you arrive now you aren't seated and then order you order and then sit. to-gos must wait in the same like as everyone else even if someone who doesn't know what they are getting and says hey you can take them- the waitress will say no that's okay. it makes more sense to have a separate to go line and faster. be aware when you go to pick up your to go and possibly get your order when seated they will combine duplicate orders. some brilliant person thought because I ordered two fried okra baskets I wanted them combined- I did not, I wasn't asked if I wanted them combined. how would I know it's two baskets? I have to trust them. They will seem like you are an inconvenience to them in their day and ask if you want them to separate them after assuming in an ignorant thought. I didn't want them all together because one was to go to someone else and the other to be shared. Adam the manager wasn't professional, saying "well I'm not going to say who is wrong or right" ..seriously I ordered two baskets wasn't asked if I wanted them all together and your waitress or whoever assumed I wanted it this way. Said he wasn't sure how to remedy it- fix your waitress' attitude and yours, have the manager come up front when busy to help process orders, ask people before doing an action for example if two brisket plates came in with the same sides would you combine them all? And have a separate to go line. But apparently all of this was too much to ask and a simple apology Adam couldn't think of. I think I've been spoiled by all the very very old barbecue establishments near Lexington, NC. Danny's isn't bad, don't get me wrong. It will suffice. The location was hard to find, and my GPS led me in circles for quite awhile until I spotted the restaurant from Tryon Rd. It's located in a strip mall that houses everything from medical facilities to a pet hospital and a church. Danny's looks like it was renovated recently, or maybe it's a new place, I don't even know. But it looks good inside. It's decorated very simply, and it's clean and sanitary. Everything is cheap. We had a $10 coupon from when we moved to Cary, so our total bill was $5.32 lol! My husband and I ordered chopped pork plates and we got chicken and fries for our daughter. I got fries and green beans with my plate and my husband got brunswick stew and potato salad. My husband said the potato salad was strange, he said it was made with sour cream instead of mayonnaise. I didn't try it, so I don't know if that is true. They had four different kinds of sauces to put on the barbecue. One was a Kansas style sweet, thick sauce. It was good, but was lacking some acid or something. It didn't taste like much of anything after I mixed it with my chopped pork. There was a mustard sauce, which I haven't seen before and was actually quite good. There was also a spicy sauce that burned a couple taste buds off. There was also straight vinegar, I added that to the Kansas style sauce. It's not something I'll be screaming and jumping and praising and preaching about, but it wasn't bad at all. Just very mediocre for a barbecue place. It'll suffice. That'll do pig. We started going to Danny's at the original Cary location, and although we moved out of state, we would always visit when in the area. We've moved back now and it's the only BBQ I'll eat in eastern NC. I've tried several of the vinegar based bbq sauces and I believe they would be great on a salad, but not on meat. Danny does it right. Hickory smoked, choice of sauces, brisket , pork (chopped not mangled), lots of great sides. We asked him last time in, if any chance of opening up one in North Raleigh or Wake Forest. Sorry to say, not likely, he's retiring soon, has 3 children and 3 restaurants, it comes out even, but means monthly (at least) trips to one of the 3 Danny's locales. When any one talks about great barbecue in the Triangle it's always the Pit blah blah blah. For my money Danny's is as good as any. It is low on ambience - very modest in a down home kinda way, and it is tucked away in a nondescript strip mall next to Wake Med Cary but the food is outstanding and the people are wonderful. Fantastic, fast no-nonsense service. Pork, brisket, chicken, turkey, are all great with all the sauces you'd expect and great sides - collards, field peas, beans and great Texas toast. I've taken visitors from all over the world to Danny's and it never fails to impress even the most discerning palates. You will not be disappointed. read more

Been here a few times now, and I can confidently say this is a pretty decent place to grab some barbecue. I've now had a chance to sample almost all of the meats on the menu, and I would rate them as a whole, good to excellent. Favorites are the chopped pork and ribs. I always gravitate towards the chopped/pulled pork and ribs anywhere I go because those are my favorite cuts, and Danny's doesn't disappoint. Chop pork here is consistently moist. Ribs are flavorful with good texture. The brisket and BBQ chicken are spot-on too. Have had the brisket 3 times; one time was a tad drier than the other two, but still very good. I have to give them a strike for not having sausage on the menu. And the only thing I would pass on is the pork loin, to me the driest and blandest of the meats. Their sauces are all awesome, and you can definitely taste each of their character: Carolina style, original, mustard based, and spicy. The sides that we've had so far are good. Nothing extremely special or terrible. This includes the coleslaw, green beans, collard greens, Brunswick stew, boiled potatoes, and fries. It's disappointing that they do not have mac and cheese, as sometimes I'll crave mac n cheese with my bbq. Their Texas toast is awesome and compliments the meats well. Dessert wise, I agree with the other great reviews about the banana pudding. Customer service is the typical friendly, casual, Southern style service you would see at a family-run establishment. Ambience is casual, goes along with the service. Tables are spaced out enough so you're not on top of your neighbor, like in some other places. Value is great. They don't skimp on the portions. Men's bathroom looks rundown but it's clean. No complaints from the wife about the ladies room. There are a couple other BBQ pits in the Triangle that I would rate higher overall, but this place is a great go-to nevertheless. read more

I would not have left this review on Yelp if we had not had such horrible customer service by the owner's wife. I actually do like the food. Their food is phenomenal. HOWEVER... My friend and I both ordered from the catering menu (meat and 4 quarts of sides each) so we would not have to cook this week. The server even double checked with us which sides we ordered so they could be bagged correctly. Imagine our frustration when we got home - her to Durham, me to Knightdale - to find out the items were not bagged correctly. She has two side items she does not want and will not eat. And I have two side items I would never eat (simply because I don't eat collards or don't care for potato salad, not that there is anythign wrong with the sides). And we live too far away from each other to exchange the items, or to even go back to Danny's tomorrow to try to make it right. We had the day off which is the only reason we could eat there. EDITED on 6/28/2018: Because we "shamed or slammed" them on Facebook (by saying the food is great but they messed up our order??), Danny's Bar-B-Que refuses to make this right. It's is too bad that Danny's was the barbecue place we liked the most because we will never get food from them again. Very great barbecue spot for lunch. Very reasonably priced. Chopped pork is excellent, sometimes a little dry, but their hot bbq sauce (the one with the red lid)fixes that right up. Food comes out quickly after you order it. Sometimes waiters are abrupt when ordering, but that is to be expected during the busy lunch hour. I wish they had an option for sweet potato fries for sides, and maybe some more vegetable options for sides. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

The place was hopping on the day after Christmas. Typical mom & pop type place. Good ole fashion service. I had the small chicken plate. The chicken was moist but it was lacking some flavor. Excellent service and portion sizes. I love that everything is pre prepped so we only beeded to wait like 5 minutes for our food on a friday night. We each irdered 2 meat dinners the turkey, brisket,ribs and pork. The turkey was moist and tender and the pork was super flavorful. Spareribs were also cooked perfectly. Would definitely return for these, but our brisket was too dry and not anything special. As far as sauces, we liked the mustard based and spicy one more than the popular sweet one. read more

This place is right down the road from my office, which is great for me. Sometimes you just need some BBQ to power through a long day. Danny's is a solid no-frills BBQ joint. Not an old-fashioned BBQ shack, but not a fancy place either. I'm giving them three stars because their meat is great, but their sides are mediocre. I like the potato salad - it tastes like there is sour cream in it rather than mayonnaise. The Brunswick Stew is meh, in my opinion. I wasn't particularly fond of the field peas, though that is something I enjoy. It needed ham hock! But back to the meat. I really like the brisket, the smoked turkey and the smoked chicken. Their meat is tender, with a nice smoky flavor. Sometime I need to try the sausage and actually, the pulled pork. The servers are very nice, and service is quick, even when the place is busy. Having grown up in the midwest, but living on the east coast for the past few years, i've had my share of bbq at local and franchies places. I was in town for a wedding, and decided to pick up a little bbq while i could. We went there for lunch on sat, and the food wasn't bad. they have "chopped" instead of "pulled" pork, which i got the sandwich. definitely tender and moist. i struck up a conversation with the manager or owner(not sure) and they definitely cook their meat right. slow cooked the night before, he stated they don't do ANY dry rubbing which i found interesting. going for pure meat flavor i guess? either way the bbq was good. id have to try their ribs for a "true" test and maybe bump it up to 4, but danny's definitely does their bbq right. read more

Great BBQ. First thing you notice upon entering Danny's is that old familiar aroma of smoking meat. And the food lived up to the aroma. Had the smoked pork with Brunswick stew and fries. Had been to RTP Danny's before but this was my first time at the "original" Cary location. The seats were already full by 12:15, but I went up for take out and it was very fast. The price was great at under $10 for lunch plate and drink. Pulled pork was excellent. I really appreciate the mustard sauce option and I also like that the pork comes out unsauced. Fried corn was just okay. I haven't had it before, but it wasn't anything life changing. I did get excited about the field peas though! Don't see those very often at local BBQ joints. I am really disappointed at this place. The food is great but the service was horrible. The waiter gave us the check and didn't even bother asking us if we wanted dessert or a refill on our drinks. It took about 10 mins for her to finally come around. When she did come around she gave us an attitude. I was able to get my banana pudding, a to go box and tea to go. She threw my straws and didn't even bother asking if I wanted anything else. I am going to try to come again because the food was good. Hopefully they have better employees next time. read more

We were eight Yankees, looking for some good BBQ. We liked that Danny's has a variety of BBQ sauces on the table, rather than serving the meat pre-sauced. My spare ribs were moist, tender and delicious and everybody else liked their dinners, too. The creamed corn fritters and hush puppies that we started with were also fresh and tasty, and not greasy. Cole slaw and baked beans were my favorite sides, of the several I tried. But - the best part by far and the reason I am happily giving this a 5-star review was our server, Mallory. Disappointingly mediocre. I got the half chicken and the chicken wasn't very exciting. My stance is that good BBQ doesnt need sauce but this just didnt have that. It didn't have a lot of spice to it and didnt have any sort of interesting flavor. The sides were also pretty mediocre, none of my family was enthusiastic about them. One of my favorite lunch spots. However, be prepared to wait for a table at lunch. Generic BBQ not region specific but it's very good. I prefer eastern style vinegar based BBQ, raised on it. I have no problem with Danny's generic smoked. Sauces on the table aren't bad. You have a choice of mustard basted, vinegar based, bbq sauce and a spicy tomato based. I enjoy mixing them op. Wings are awesome so I'm told as I don't do wings. Brisket is very good. The corn nuggets rock. read more
