I was very disappointed today, yes I was alone on Easter came back from the cemetery and was very hungry. Went to Dappers the girl seated people who came in after me, two different parties. I am invisible, strike one. The owner seated me, I told the waitress I wanted decaf and that was the last I saw of her for twenty minutes, she was waiting on tables who came in after me. I got angry decided to leave told the owner and she charged me $2.60 for a half of a cup of coffee. Shame on you Dappers! read more

I have been coming here with my my daughters since they been little and now they are 16/13. I have to say this was the worst service that I have experienced. Obviously the owners were not there because this would never happened. I had ordered 4 different breakfast specials and the lady said 15 minutes, when I got there I had to wait for someone to come up front .I lady came not happy looking but I told her what I ordered she told me to take the first bag. Left got home to noticed this is not my order. I called and she said it was my fault. I said you told me to take the package and now you are saying this. I find this place extraordinarily average. If I lived in the hood or shopped in the mall more often, I might stop in here. Or if I was retired. Or if my mother was still alive. Today, it was me, a bunch of old ladies, some with grown daughters, a few young mothers with children, a couple of guys in suits (salesmen working at or servicing the mall?), and a handful of blue collar guys. A decent crowd, none of whom you would be likely to find at the latest gastropub. I've been here a few times -- once or twice with my now-deceased mother -- and stopped in today to refresh my memory, just so I could write a Yelp review. (I was in the neighborhood.) Someone mentioned biscuits and gravy in another review, so I was pumped for that, only to discover they only serve it on weekends. I got the Monte Cristo sandwich, something I use to judge diners, and it ... well, the ham was very good. The sandwich was very moist, and not in a good way. I'll assume it was cooked in butter. I usually ask for mustard with my Monte Cristo, since it's a ham and cheese sandwich, after all, but my waitress didn't stick around long enough to ask me if I needed anything. She did bring me a refill on my soda, um, iced tea. At first I ordered a diet coke, but I changed it to an iced tea. She brought me a diet pepsi. So when she offered me a refill, it was on my "soda, um, iced tea." Yeah, too late. This place is Dappers East, and I've always wondered if there was a Dappers West. But not enough to look it up. Thanks to the wonders of Yelp, I now know that the original Dappers *is* west, at 5050 N Cumberland, and there's also a Dappers South, in River Grove. This place is one of a million Greek diners in Chicago , for whatever reason , my wife's family chose this one. The service there is always ok , not great , but they don't screw much up and when they do they fix it right the first time. They have a diverse menu , and alot of it I have tried , most of it is pretty good to very good. I liked the fried chicken although the breast was a tad overdone and dry , pretty good overall. The griller sandwiches are great , I order them sans the peppers (don't like 'em , never have) and they are great , especially the steak griller. Had the fish combo , fried and what you would expect from a diner , but not bad. The sandwiches are probably the best thing they do , I usually get the BLT or the Turkey club , both excellent. They also do a great job on their soups , and there is almost always one soup of the day I like. The inlaws have converted me into a fan of this place and now I give my opinion to you , do with it what you will. read more

This place is okay. I find that a lot of there food is hit or miss. Sometimes it is good one day, and when you order it again it just isn't the same. Most things I have had here I can get some where else for about the same price and it is consistent, so I am not sure that I would make a special trip for it. However, I love the Matzo Ball Soup. The coffee is good, but sip it slowly if you get a particular waitress or two, they never seem to fill it up or they make you feel like they are going out of their way for it. read more

I've been going to Dappers since I was in early grade school so it will always have a special place in my heart. The restaurant is diner/family style. The biggest difference between then and now is that the prices have gone up quite a bit but the food is still bountiful and good. The owners/managers and waitresses are all really nice people. I've had most of what's on the menu and have no real complaints. I guess I could go over some highlights... The california pita pocket is yummy, being one of my favorite things to get when I don't want breakfast. I usually get breakfast, which usually involves and omelet, which are always fluffy and chock full of gooey cheese. The tapioca pudding is my go-to dessert. One important thing about dessert, the cakes can be kind of dry. Hence, the pudding preference. Everything is fresh, especially the fruit. I've had some really great fruit plates here during the spring/summer. You get a lot of food. I don't think I've ever finished a full meal here. Their coffee is really good. They serve Papa Nicolas, which I happen to like a lot. I sometimes get a vanilla latte. I guess you could say, the only things that I don't like about Dappers are the price increases over the years. Our server (I'm assuming as she was taking care of every table adjacent to ours) walked by us 10 times without bothering to stop. We met eyes on a couple of occasion, I motioned with a smile for her to come over and nothing. 20 minutes in a mostly empty restaurant without so much as a hello. Bus boy was johnny on the spot with the water, but that's it. Our "waitress" took care of the 4 tables sat around us who came in after we did without delay. Must have been the way we looked. Dunno. Watch about three episodes of Restaurant: Impossible and you'll see many faux pas here. Very dusty and outdated decor. Bland food that isn't fresh but packaged. Overcrowded menu. This place was crowded and I just don't understand why. I think as Americans we will really eat anything. This place is subpar. I went with a group of 15 or so people. 3 of us ordered the leg of lamb with vegetables and rice pilaf. I was expecting a lamb shank. It was sliced meat that didn't taste like real lamb. The gravy was watery, the vegetables were overlooked. Neither of us had the same vegetables. One person's vegetables was undercooked, mine were overcooked, and the other had steamed vegetables. Another in our party ordered an omelet and it was apparent they had the fire up too high because the outer was hard and the inner was runny. She sent it back and that one tasted as if the eggs were old. A dessert came with our special and everything we wanted they were out of. Once I go to the front I saw the cooler that the desserts sat in and I could tell they sit there for days. Another gentlemen ordered baked chicken and it was still white and rubbery. This restaurant is getting away with murder. The food is not select or fresh. The restaurant is old. The cashier at the front told some patrons that she doesn't even work there anymore, they called and asked her to help out. That's not a good sign to me. Dapper's you can fool some of the people, but not all of the people. You guys are serving slop and because you've been in the neighborhood for years , your name and longevity is what's holding you over. read more

I used to come here when I was a kid and the food used to be really horrible so I stopped coming but I decided to give it a try again many years later so I stopped by for some carry out and the cooks were quick to make my food, the staff was very nice, and my meal was prepared and wrapped up for me in about 10 minutes. The food has DEFINITELY improved since the early 2000's, and the atmosphere is a lot nicer too. Would go here again for carry out or even to done in sometime. My one issue is, the food wasn't wrapped as well as it could've and when I got home my soup had spilled a bit and my sandwich was kind of falling apart but it was still good. read more

I've been here about 3 times. First 2 times were mediocre but this last time it was horrible. I ordered matzo ball soup. I took 1 bite; it was awful and smelled funny. The waitress just removed the bowl and didn't even think to ask if it was ok. Clearly only 1 bite was eaten. I really don't like giving bad reviews but I had no choice. I went with my boyfriend for first time here for a Sunday Brunch/Lunch time, and Service was really bad and the environment was not the best. Our server "Heather" was really awful. She seemed to not care at all what customer service means. Her Service was really slow, she would forget things that were part of our food, I ask for coffee and needed creamers and she took a really long time (after two reminders) to bring them that my coffee got cold. My food was a combo/package she also forgot about my juice I had to ask her for it. She would barely refill our water cups, she just don't care at all about a good service, food was ok but nothing compare to other places we eat breakfast/lunch from. It's really sad it was a bad experience cause this Restaurant is actually in the neighborhood we just moved in. I was hoping food and service was better and make it one of our spots. This place blows! I have given them many chances to wow me, and quite the opposite happenned, every time. The host/hostess, never goes out of their way to be friendly. The atmosphere is uncomfortable, and the food bites! The only reason I went back after the first bad meal was because I was convinced that it was probably just a bad day. I love this particular Dappers location. I've ordered lunch take out before from here but today I met a friend for lunch and I was beyond pleased with the service. Very friendly, quick and efficient to get me in and out of there in my lunch hour! I tried the cobb salad today and it was fantastic! Definately a couple notches above average for a cobb salad. Nice portion, quality produce and I like that they use salad greens not just iceberg or romaine lettuce. I also have to note that I LOVE the salad dressings they have spcecifically the ranch and garlic. Tastes homeade, no aftertaste like the prepared stuff most restaurants offer. My friend got a chicken panini sandwich which he raved about as well. I've enjoyed everything I've tried here, especially breakfast mmmm.... Nice diner type feel. Menu had a little bit of everything. I had a Bleu Cheeseburger on dark rye bread and a Caesar salad. Caesar salad was good and the burger was very tasty! I was invited by a family member to have an Easter meal at this restaurant this morning. Needless to say, I was disappointed. First, the coffee was lukewarm at best. Second, the food was sub-par with very little seasoning. Last, there were many mistakes on the orders at our table. I ordered raisin toast and specified that it be only lightly toasted, but still received burnt toast. Another person at our table asked for tomatoes instead of hash browns, but still got the hash browns. After the mistake was addressed, the tomatoes came, but with a stem included. Getting refills on the coffee took forever. Good thing we didn't get charged extra to watch the waitress spill most of it every time she poured a cup. It doesn't take much to be a good server. I'm no professional chef, but I believe I could make better food than this restaurant. First impressions aren't always accurate, but more often than not they paint a clear picture of the experience on any given day. I may give this place another shot if I'm in the area again, but I definitely will not drive to the north side of Chicago with the intention of eating here specifically. Those who have been going here for years, I believe, have continued out of loyalty or friendship rather than a good dining experience. The hours say they close at 9, but once we came at 7:30 and they made us order right when we sat down saying the kitchen is closing and we should have come earlier. My favorite meal is breakfast and Dappers does an excellent job. One of my metrics for deciding if a diner/breakfast place is good depends on the quality of the coffee. The coffee is indeed excellent and stronger than an average diner. A main order of mine is a Gypsy or garbage skillet with pancakes. Dappers has a great Gypsy skillet with a perfectly cooked sunny side up egg that as a whole is quite a large portion for under $10. I always enjoy breakfast here.
