I was searching online for the best French silk pie in Minneapolis and one of the results that kept popping up was Dave the Pie Guy. I ordered a French silk and a strawberry cheesecake over the phone last week to be picked up today for my uncle's birthday, and we were all so impressed by the results. Pick up was easy. Dave clearly puts a lot of care into his work, and it shows in the quality of the pie. Both pies were perfect in texture, flavor, and appearance (although our berries did shift a bit in transit, but looked perfect when we got it in the shop). Dave-- the Pie Guy-- is the real deal. He loves his pies and, like our children, he has no favorite pie -- they are ALL his favorite. And for good reason. This was a fantastic lunch! I ordered a turkey sandwich. This was not an ordinary Turkey sandwich. It was, (ahem), smoked turkey slices with cheddar and Smiked Gouda cheese on --get this-- toasted wild rice cranberry bread with a little mayo. Breathless... *chef's kiss* SO GOOD! I was his only in-store customer at the time, and he sat and chatted with me; sharing stories of his time living in Duluth or working at the old Hotel Sofitel (where he got many of his entree recipes. This may be a little too personal, but I was having a pretty crappy morning, but after my lunch and conversation with Dave the Pie Guy, he completely got me out of my head! Very disappointed so I had to post a review. A week before Thanksgiving, I followed Dave's website directions to order Thanksgiving pies and followed up by phone 4 times with no response. So I stopped by the store and there were some nice women peeling apples. When I shared that I had been trying to reach the shop, Dave's response was that he stopped listening to phone messages and checking emails because he was too busy baking pies. I understand that he is busy. All he had to do was edit the website to say he was not taking orders or have a staff person send a mass email to those who placed orders via the email listed on the website, the stated way to order Thanksgiving pies. I am frustrated because it's now too late to order from other shops. Pies may be tasty but customer service is horrible and we won't be enjoying his pies for Thanksgiving. read more

I love pie. I'd choose it over cake almost any day. We had friends bring over a split French silk and turtle cheesecake. First off, you know any place that sends you home with pie in a pie glass is top notch. The French silk pie was so smooth - it was almost like a mousse texture, and so decadent and not too sweet. The cheesecake was rich and the caramel and chocolate toppings added a ton of flavor. Nothing bad to say about the pies! Stopped in around 1pm to get some lunch. Dave was in his kitchen rolling out some crust for his 'award winning pies' (True by the way, but more on that in a bit). The atmosphere of the place is warm and worn. You're met with a case of delicious looking pies including Banana Cream, Key Lime, and Strawberry Cheesecake. Dave had asked what I was looking to get, "Pie or Food?", and started listing his recommended choices after I replied I was looking for a bite to eat. I settled for a BLT and cup of chili. Moments after ordering, out came my meal, steaming soup and all. Dave sat the plate down and said "You're gonna love this sandwich. This is what I do. Best in town!" And must I say he may very well have been correct with that statement. The applewood bacon, fresh tomatoes, and crunchy lettuce done up on Cranberry Wild Rice was a BLT done right. The Chili was warm and ready to go also. Before leaving I grabbed a slice of pie for the road (eating while typing this) which seemed like a mandatory finale when going to a restaurant with 'pie' in the name. Filling was tart and overall not too sugary, just the way I like fruit pies. I can see why he has won awards with some of these! I tried this place after looking at someone else's review and photos because the pie looked so good. All it takes is a good looking pic to suck me in. I visited this place (shh dont tell, but 3 times in 1 week just to get the french silk pie, which is said to be award winning btw. I can see why. VERY rich and decadent, and slightly heavy. I had to eat in 2 sittings. The cream on top tastes like a homemade whip which sort of balances the chocolate. My husband really enjoyed the Key Lime pie and said it wasn't super limey like he's experienced in the past. The owner Dave was very pleasant and we even shared a small conversation. Parking was a bit of a challenge because it's sort of hidden on a residental street, but not impossible. Def. recommend stopping by for some delish pie. I've been enjoying Dave's excellent selection of pies for years, and was pleasantly surprised that the food is amazing too! The menu looks like your average diner fare, but its incredibly well done. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and it arrived on good quality cranberry wild rice bread - not a combination I would have expected to work with eggs and cheese, but it did! The eggs were clearly real eggs with a distinct white and yolk, not from a jug o egg slosh, and the omelette was big with plenty of filling. I live i Los Angeles, CA and heard my co worker who lives in MN loves Dave's pies so for his birthday I decided to order a couple of pies for him and his extended family. While Dave doesn't have a "delivery service" he offered ( for a reasonable fee which I insisted on) to personally drive the pie 25-30 min out of the way after he closed up shop. My friend was surprised and delighted because he is a foodie and praises Dave's pies. Amazing example of why good, small businesses are what makes this country! Found at 3544 Grand Avenue and apparently letting both website and social media go to seed a while ago, the fact that phones also go unanswered an added chapter to "how to fail at customer service," it was with parking located nearby that Dave the Pie Guy was approached, a pull of the handle finding doors open though the space seemed uninhabited until a young woman emerged from the back. Listed as being open at 10:30am on weekdays and 8:30am on weekends, the lights off and doors locked at half-past-ten Saturday necessitating a second attempt on Sunday around 1:30pm, it was only after walking deeper into rustic confines that Dave himself was seen lining tins with dough, the current "selection" of just three pies, one cake and some cookies plus a few "too old to sell" slices leading one to wonder exactly how the place stays afloat. Debating a quick departure without purchase, Dave's "famous" French Silk not likely to be ready for three hours and his store a final stop en route to the airport, it was only the fact that Carrot Cake was one of the choices which necessitated an order, the Sweet Potato Pie a last minute $4 addition but not particularly noteworthy in comparison to versions tasted in the past. Taking the pair to go, a dine-in option actually not even offered as Slices were immediately placed in black Styrofoam, it was only after sitting down at the Gate that Carrot Cake was actually tasted, the thin layer of Cream Cheese Frosting surprisingly quite tangy and well-matched to bold spicing plus a moist sponge that makes one think Dave's might actually be good when its proprietor decides to show up on time for work. read more

Quirky little place. Mind you, am a fan of quirky when it comes across as authentic. Luckily, this felt like the real deal to me: For starters, Dave himself sat down with hubby, me, and the kid to chat and show us a portfolio of his pie pics. He was especially proud of his limited reliance on sugar. I think he said that he uses just 1/3 cup for most of his pies, though don't quote me. Since I am the self-anointed Queen of low sugar everything, I was impressed. As for the space, hubby sums it up pretty well: "It's got a homey, worn look that makes it seem like it's been around forever." 'Seem' is the operative word. Apparently, it opened just a couple years ago. Alright, already! How was the pie??? Well, we shared a slice of Apple Crumb and a slice of Chocolate French Silk. It is with great disappointment that the event for which I ordered Dave's pies has been cancelled and I lost the opportunity to support his business, but I'm compelled to review none-the-less. Dave was a joy to work with over the phone, he detailed the pie flavors for me, cut options, display ideas, helped with numbers and even took in a large order with little notice. He is exactly the type of person I enjoy doing business with and who's business I aim to support. I'm really diggin' this spot! It's very homely, I love it. It's got this mom and pop shop feel and is a hidden gem that specializes in delicious pies. All orders are taken through the cashier who was fantastic in service. Attentive and kind, and continued to check on me as I dined. The rest of the staff was also very sweet. Yay for great service! For food, I started with a egg sandwich which was pretty simple, but sooo friggin' satisfying. You have the option to add ham or bacon, but I decided to omit it since I can't eat meat today. The menu is quite affordable, nothing over $8 unless you're buying a whole quality pie. On that note, I tried a slice of their famous French silk pie. YUUUUM! Chocolatey and oh so creamy. Best pies I have ever had! PLEASE DON'T TELL MY MOTHER!!! Let's get this out the way now though: yes, the listed hours are not consistent. It can be frustrating when one has that hankering for the best pie in the state (which pie is the best pie? YOU DECIDE). You will forgive this once you meet Dave and have a pie. Well worth the wait. Now, onward to the praise! Regarding fruit incorporated pies (apple, strawberry, the occasional blue berry black berry combo), one can actually taste the fruit; its natural sweetness, its satisfying level of tartness. Little to no added sugar! His crusts are all homemade. Don't get me started on the French Silk Pie's crust. I want that in bowl for breakfast! Some of the pies have feta (yes, feta cheese) incorporated into the crust. I balked at first, but now I can't have an apple pie without it. Again, don't tell my mother. I made a promise to myself, to try all the pies on his menu. I have yet to succeed for two reasons: I keep choosing to purchase a whole pie instead of a slice, making this venture more expensive than previously anticipated; he keeps making pies that are not on the menu. Not once have I had a bad pie. They are each unique and scrumptious. If my wallet and blood pressure will allow it, I will try all the pies! These are good problems to have in life. So bummed! We stopped here yesterday after a baptism to pick up a pie for family dinner. The woman who greeted us at the door was beyond friendly and I love that the pies come baked in a glass dish. Stopped into this neighborhood restaurant for a quiet breakfast. There were probably 3 of us in there around 10:30 apart from the people coming in to pick up pies. I had the Basic Breakfast which is eggs, your choice of potato, and toast. I added a side of bacon ($3 for 2 slices...kinda pricey). The food was great and coffee was excellent. Gail, the woman behind the counter, was probably one of the nicest people I've ever met on the earth. She was warm and friendly and very attentive. I got two of the chocolate chip cookies made with vanilla pudding and on recommendation, a slice of the apple streusel pie to-go because it's a pie shop and it would have been absurd not to partake. Dave saved the day. Sunday morning, Father's Day, the BF had a brill idea to get his father a french silk pie (the fave). Fortunately as I phoned around, trying to find something non-cookie-cutter, Dave's pie shop showed up w great reviews. So I phoned to get a HOLD on a french silk to pick up that afternoon. I was a bit late getting over there. However Dave shooed away the folks trying to get at my pie ;) It was pronounced the best french silk pie my BF's mum ever had. They both loved the crust. I would give this four stars because it was painfully slow to order with only a few customers and pretty chaotic, but the pie is so good that I have to give it five stars. This is really the only place I have found EVER that puts less sugar in pies and uses mainly the fruits to sweeten the pies naturally. Sugar is pushed on us so much and today it's in almost everything to water down food quality. When I quit sugar, I got far too thin and couldn't eat a lot of foods (even tomato sauce, which has so much added sugar.) Our foods are not supposed to have this much added sugar and everything tasted sickeningly sweet after I cut back. Not these pies. They make you feel good without feeling sick and fat and are almost perfectly sweetened naturally, not artificially. I liked the berry pie, it was almost perfect. I loved the cranberry-apple. My understanding is that the mousse pies won the award but I think the fruit pies are the best. I wish Dave would put even less sugar and make some pies specialty with less so that if I warm them and top the with icecream or the sweetened whipped cream, it's not overkill, but given that I can't find a better pie, this place should have five stars. What a treat. Thank you. I also got an omelet, it was hurriedly made and did not include the right ingredients that I wanted, (tomatoes instead of red-peppers) but it was still good and, like I said, I have yet to find better pie. There was also eggshell in my omelet but if we were living in cavemen days, I would be craving the collagen from the eggshell and it would have a vital nutrient. It's still not a big deal because Dave honestly makes the best pies I have ever had, so anything not related to pie, to me, is forgivable. I'm not sure if the crust is gluten free on some pies, but I do know he makes a lot of crusts with ground nuts and uses ground nuts as a filler for some of the other crusts so that there is less flour. read more

I went to this area to go to the metaphysical store next door and noticed this little cute restaurant. I headed over and Dave greeted us. He was so incredibly nice and showed us a binder full of pies and desserts that he's made and willing to make upon request. I ordered the banana cream pie, which was AMAZING. I love banana cream pie and this is the best I've ever had. He made the whipped cream fresh and put it on my slice right before it was served to me. 100% going back and supporting this small business. read more

We stopped by for a slice and walked up to a beautiful window display. When we got in the showcase was mostly empty except for 3 kinds of pie. We got the Apple streusel pie which was ok, but the apples were kind of grey. My partners breakfast came out and there was a hair on the plate, which we assume was from Dave, as he was working without any hair restraint and the server had blonde curly hair which was tied back. This place is garbage. We waited forever. The guy doesn't wash his hands.he uses dirty towels for everything. The vegetables are old and gross. I will preface this review with a couple of caveats. I have only tried Dave's apple streusel and banana cream pies. Also, we have only eaten take out pie--never had it fresh at the restaurant. What I can say about the pies we have had is yuck. The banana cream pie hardly had any flavor, whereas the apple streusel is literally inedible. I'm sitting here next to a full apple streusel pie that has only one slice taken out of it. My family of five (all big pie eaters) could not eat more than that. I fear the rest of this pie is going into the garbage, but I don't have the heart to throw it out tonight. It tastes INTENSELY of nutmeg. Way too much nutmeg. The crust is soggy and gummy and tastes musty--like an old refrigerator case. I would guess this pie is a few days old and it shows. I'm not sure if the general public is easily impressed or if we've just gotten a couple of bad pies, but there is no way this is award-winning pie. read more
