    Memorial Day 5/25/26 outside

Tried out Daytrip Counter in Oakland cuz husband was willing to drive. I don't like driving and not in Oakland. We found street parking around the corner from the restaurant. Order first then find seating. Memorial Day wasn't busy when we went, but it did get busy after. Got the Combo #2 meal: whole chicken, salad or bowl, and 2 sides & 2 sauces for $54. Chicken was chopped in some pieces, was brined so not dry. Got the basil Caesar salad, sides we got: giant white beans and cauliflower. All pretty good. Umami egg $3.5 - was ok. Wanted Straus soft serve $5 w/ passion fruit sauce $1.50 but machine was not working cashier told me. Got the black sesame coconut cookie $3 instead it was ok. Credit cards only. One unisex bathroom in the back, left side. Tip: Alysia Liu mural is next door. That was cool to see.

Brothy gigantic beans have my heart!! They weren't kidding about the beans and I loved Joe it had a spritz of lime as well. We debated on the combo #1 versus ordering à la carte and settled on the latter bc we wanted to try more salads as oppose to a half rotisserie. We had the basil Caesar and the corpse spicy and both were fabulous and generously sized. Definitely get the bowl bc it's basically the salad plus quinoa!

On the way to work, it has become my favorite spot and treat. I love the yellow color and its vibe, very nostalgic and Oakland. The food is definitely delicious. I only have one suggestion: offering more sides and For one person only size, such as fries. The people here are nice and quick to respond. It's just a cool lace. You should visit.

Following, or maybe leading the charge of high end restaurants morphing into ultra-casual joints, the future of dining in America, who knows, but this is the condition of Daytrip. Sunshine colors adorn the dining room. The menu on the wall printed in 1970s type face, anachronistic perhaps, given the current zeal for things 90s and Y2K. There are salads and sides suitable to a gourmandizing backyard picnic in Berkeley. But I only came for the roasted chicken. A half chicken is something like $18 and comes smothered in a thin schmaltz and stock gravy. Garnished with chives and a lime wedge. A more than capable roast chicken. Platonic ideal? Ideally, you'd want to make Daytrip Counter a group affair. Even the finest roast chicken can be tiresome. You need a couple friends and family to share in the other items like cauliflower, gigante means and what not.

Daytrip Counter is a casual diner-style spot where you can get some really delicious and satisfying crispy chicken salad! recs: crispy spicy salad w/ chicken price: ~$15/person - Crispy Spicy Salad: SO satisfying. Came topped with a generous portion of what looked like fried shallots and sunflower seeds. This is a textural adventure between the crispiness of the shallot mix and the freshness of the kale and shredded veggies and the softness of the chicken (I do wish there was just a little more chicken haha) - Chicken Soup: Got this on a cold evening to combat the low temperatures outside. This was served just slightly warmer than room temp -- not terrible at all, but I think it would have tasted even better hot. (Since there is no microwave, they offered to redo this for us, but we figured it was too much hassle to remake the whole thing.) Comes with gigante beans, big pieces of shredded chicken, kale, and feta cheese in this creamy, comforting, slightly citrusy chicken broth. Service is quick and easy -- you just order at the counter and get your number before sitting down. The center island is used to grab your own water and clear your plates once you're done.

Med Salad w/ Shredded Chicken and Ceaser Fries

Daytrip Counter is a cool, casual counter service spot focused on chicken with some great sides! First off, I love the decor of this place! It's very simple, but retro feeling and seating is super comfortable with plenty of booths. Do note that this place is primarily self service - while you order at the counter; utensils, water, and napkins are all self serve! I ordered the Club Med with Shredded Chicken and the Ceaser Fries, which were both good, but had some issues. Unfortunately, both dishes were wildly salty. The fries were especially bad in that regard, with the heavy Nori based seasoning and the anchovy based Ceaser. The salad was a better, but I found myself wanting a lot more of the base kale/lettuce, both to cut down on the amount of salt and to make the portion feel a little more full, as I wasn't quite satisfied when I left. I will definitely be coming back to try out their half chicken and potentially some of the drinks - they had some interesting lemonades on the menu! Otherwise though, I don't think I will make this a regular spot, given all the great options in the area!

I have no past history with the previous iteration at this location, Daytrip. Apparently it was a more upscale restaurant with a 20% service charge, but the owners rethought their economic strategy and turned it into a counter order operation. This approach appealed to Jamie W and me since we were looking for a casual lunch on a post-workout Saturday afternoon. Rotisserie chicken sounded particularly appealing. Not knowing what kind of portion sizes they offered or how to mix and match, we both ordered the $39 Combo Meal #1, which was detailed as a half bird, one salad or bowl, one side, and one sauce. The price struck me as a bit high, but then I wasn't expecting three full courses. The first dishes to arrive were the salads, and they were honestly meals by themselves. Jamie chose the Basil Caesar Salad, a full plate of mixed greens covered in not just a thick Caesar dressing. It also included Grana Padano cheese, garlic breadcrumbs, and pickled peppers (Photo 9). Here was a case of the rich dressing and toppings overwhelming the freshness underneath. I had a better balance with the Club Med Salad, a Mediterranean delight with Castelvetrano olives, red cabbage, sheep's milk feta cheese, zaatar, Gigante beans, and a tangy lemon tahini vinaigrette (Photo 8). The buttery, vinaigrette-marinated beans were the standout here. The half chicken arrived on a separate plate, a plumped trinity of breast, thigh, and leg. Apparently it' was brined in a housemade vinaigrette and then marinated in a rub full of chives and seasonings. It was cooked on a slow-turning spit and then ladled with an intensely buttery "buerre monte" sauce. That's a lot of flavors and steps, but somehow it all worked. In fact, neither of us needed the lemon tahini sauce that came with it (Photo 10). In a just world, that would've been enough food had we known the portion sizes, but the side dishes arrived almost as soon as the chicken. One dish was the Sesame Cauliflower which was roasted in paprika and mixed liberally in lemon tahini and black sesame (Photo 6). It was again drenched in butter, a recurring theme with the food we ordered, and the use of lemon tahini yet again was moving toward overkill by this point in the meal. The other side was the Hot Honey Butter Green Beans smothered in Thai chile and lime butter and sprinkled with candied pumpkin seeds and breadcrumbs (Photo 7). This side brought welcome crunch and spiciness. Bottom line, we were overwhelmed by the amount of food we received, so we ended up taking a lot of it home for dinner. Next time we'll order just the Club Med salad with shredded chicken or perhaps the half chicken a la carte. FOOD - 4 stars...the brined, rubbed and buttered rotisserie chicken is the thing AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...a spacious fast food set-up SERVICE - 3 stars...nice enough but nonexistent once the food arrives TOTAL - 4 stars...stick with the chicken..unless you're really hungry RELATED - Exploring Oakland? I stumbled upon Daytrip Counter while looking for a quick, healthy option and was pleasantly surprised. Since I can't eat cow dairy, I was excited to see they offer sheep feta, such a thoughtful option. I ordered the Club Med salad with chicken, added an umami egg, and paired it with a rosé. I also took home the sesame cauliflower with lemon tahini, the chicken soup and the chicken basil Caesar salad (with added chicken). Everything was incredibly fresh and packed with ingredients that made the salads hearty and flavorful, not just a bowl of greens. The staff was friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better. Definitely a great spot for a fresh, satisfying meal.

Staff and Service: - Order at the counter and you'll receive a number. Staff will bring your dishes out to you - The cashier was super friendly and connecting with everyone Food and Drinks: - House-made salted honey limeade: not salty and definitely more on the limeade taste. The honey mellows it out so it's not super tart - Caesar fries: we actually got these for free since they accidentally made an extra order. Super nice of the staff! I liked the seasoning on the fries - Caesar salad with shredded chicken: the basil was a fun addition to this salad and gave the flavor an extra pop Miscellaneous. - Parking available via metered street parking - Good for groups of four or smaller (there aren't larger tables)

I ordered the sando and fries combo and enjoyed them at the picnic tables nearby. 5/5 Chicken sandwich I'm no fried chicken connoisseur, but I really enjoyed this sandwich. My mild fried chicken sandwich was crispy and savory with a hint of sweetness. The coleslaw was a creamy tangy addition that paired well with the sandwich. It's nice they offer various spicy levels; the mild is flavorful without burning off your taste buds. 4/5 Fries were nicely spiced with cajun-esque flavors. Not spicy at all. They included a mysterious (aioli?) sauce that went well with the fries. Fries were crispy though without the pillowy insides I crave. The portion was huge, quite shareable. I also tried a few bites of the thick gravy seafood etouffee. Other folks in my party were impressed with the flavor and generally liked it, but I didn't care too much for it. You might enjoy it if you, too, enjoy curry-type food. I don't often eat fried or hot chicken, but I consider this to be one of the better spots locally.

We ordered a chicken sando, the chicken and waffles, and a couple sides -- the greens and etouffee. The sandwich was the clear highlight: moist chicken thigh with a breaded crunch, covered by a thin layer of mayo coleslaw. The light, sweet crunch of the cabbage and carrots gave balance to the dark meat. The waffles were crispy but just soft enough you could wrap them around the chicken to make a sweet sandwich out of that dish too. The server was very friendly when we came. I expressed curiosity about the different heat levels, and he shared nuggets batter d in the medium and hot sauces. He shared our excitement at trying the hot stuff! For the record, the medium is hotter than your typical spicy chicken sandwich and probably a safe go-to. The hot level just cracks "painful" but not unmanageably so -- might be fun as a treat. TBH I was pleasantly surprised by how much flavor each sauce packed -- and how different they were. The medium is especially sweet. Go for the sando. Crank up the heat. It doesn't miss.

The staff was cordial and friendly, and the chicken-themed decor, charming. Now it IS a chicken joint, the go-to chicken spot for my full carnivore friend. He loves them for their chicken, their inexpensive menu and their large portions. I'm mostly pescatarian, though I do sometimes cheat with bacon. (I always feel SO guilty afterwards too!) I ordered the honey mustard salad with bacon and no chicken. My friend ordered the chicken Mac n cheese and tater tots. The bill came up to $30, and the portions were good on on the salad, GREAT on the tater tots and decent on the chicken mac. I can't speak personally on the chicken but my friend says it's amazing. I tasted some of his Mac n cheese with no chicken, and it was really good and flavorful, nice and cheesy. I tasted his tater tots. They were plentiful, well-seasoned and fried to golden perfection, with a nice crunch. I ate all of my salad. My friend couldn't finish his chicken Mac or his tater tots and was happy to be able to take them to go for another meal. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this place.

The fries were decent, but likely just some standard frozen fries. The ranch was also really good, but $.50 each small sized cup. My biggest gripe was the service and the state of the restaurant. In the booth we sat in there was an electrical outlet is hanging out of the wall and the booths are in need of cleaning. We had to use the bathroom, and the soap was out. The staff member brought a new one, but didn't know how to install it so it just sat on top of paper towels. Not a huge deal but bruh, figure it out. The guy was nice enough, but just sat and watched his phone when no one was at counter. There was also another guy, maybe from the kitchen (?) hanging out behind the counter sometimes as well. All while tables needed wiping, the bus tub was FULL with dishes, or either of them could have tried to get the soap installed. If there was no one at counter or food to cook it was stand around and stare at our phones. It's just sad Just a subpar experience for as much as food costs these days. Train the staff to stay busy and know how to bus tables and clean. And if you ever order the BLT chicken sandwich make sure to ask for no BBQ sauce. Yuk.
