Great food with interesting and varied atmosphere depending on where you sit. Our waitress was super knowledgeable and friendly as well.

This is a restaurant located close to the end of the Highline. It's down on 10th ave at the corner. It's actually next door to its bar. So if you want to visit this place, don't open the first door on your left. Open the second door. The sour beer on the top was quite good. It had some flavors of a Guinness but obviously with the sour in it. The sangria cocktail at the bottom was alright. Not my choice, but wasn't bad. The cretan salad came with arugula, feta, tomato, cucumber, chickpeas, onions, barley rusks, olives, red wine vinegar, tomato puree, and olive oil. I have to say the dressing here was a little absent. I was expecting the vinegar to punch through, but really at the end of the day it was rather on the bland side as it was more oily than oily and sour. The grilled baby lamb chops came with 3 chops and were cast iron seared and served over Greek inspired chimichurri sauce. The lamb chops were cooked quite nicely at a medium rare and were tender. The chimichurri was kind of forgettable for me. I think I wished they had put some of the chimichurri on top of the lamb chops as oppose to under, but that's just me. Like the menu says, it was definitely more of a small sampler. The 3 grilled cod tacos were served with skordalia, guacamole, and micro-greens. The fish was very tender and piping hot, but it was unseasoned. The guacamole for me was fairly subtle and bland. If they would've just had more citrus or even some salt, it would've tasted much better. The fried pickles were also pretty good, but I definitely prefer these to be cut smaller than the chunks they were. I didn't get enough of the breading. The pickles though were sour and would have been even better if there was more breading. The sauces were unmemorable for me, so I can't recall what they tasted like. The ambiance is pretty low key on a Tuesday night. The decor is very rustic. Think a lot of wood all over like you're in old town San Francisco gold rush. In the back there is a patio that people can chat. The nook we were sitting indoors makes it feel like a speak-easy type of room. If there were more guests, the noise level would be much louder, but thankfully there was just one other small party. read more

This place has such potential First of all let me say that the beer is really damn good. but its also really damn expensive. 9.80$ for one 12oz beer? I mean, even for NYC that is pretty steep you guys. The ambiance of the place would be solid enough, with the large bar, cozy looking booths and back yard space, but there were flies everywhere when we were hanging at the bar. really not a good look for a place that serves food, they should do something about this. The staff seemed friendly enough,and were happy to refill our water glasses as we perused the menu while sipping ultra expensive beers. The food menu looks solid as well, but as I said I can't imagine eating at a place that has so many flies flying about. This place is pretty overpriced . I used to love it here, but after my last experience I'm sad to say I won't be coming back, it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. Shame too, because their food is pretty good. (No pun intended) When my friend and I walked in, it was pretty empty inside and because of this we asked if they were open or serving lunch. We were met with lots of attitude. The waitress was super reluctant to sit us outside when we had asked if we were allowed. Telling us "it was was way too crowded" and kept trying to make up other reasons why we couldn't. We didn't think much of it because why get upset about that? But then when we ordered our drinks she went "well I guess you guys can sit outside if you'd like". Almost like she didn't believe we'd order anything if we went outside. (Who loiters in a restaurant?) Our second drinks took over 20min to make too. We almost canceled them because we were just pretty tired at that point. Drinks are good, food is good, but just way to pricey for the quality. 4 drinks, $75, and an empty belly later, we were feeling pretty defeated. If you come here I suggest skipping the drinks and just ordering some food. The food won't disappoint I promise, but the prices and service may. ALSO!! If you sit outside, when you pay the check you can opt to leave it outside too. Shame on me I should've brought it to the front, since I left a cash tip. I stopped by this place on a humid, rainy day in NYC. I got off at Penn Station and my first objective was to walk the Highline since I have never done that before. After enduring heavy rain and dodging people like myself with huge umbrellas in tow, I decided it was time to get off and head back down to street level Lo and behold, I saw that Death Ave. was already open in the afternoon! I was thirsty and based on a quick search they had cocktails and beer. Being that it was 3pm on a weekday afternoon, I wasn't surprised that it was empty. There was one other person in there and she seemed to look really comfortable being the only person in there. The bartender seemed friendly enough and he even gave me happy hour pricing on my drinks even though HH wouldn't start for another 30 minutes. It's probably not that fair for me to review a bar when it's empty. Ever since I came here, I discovered that there were other Death Ave. locations in other cities in the US. That made me open my eyes as I never thought anyone would go into any business that had the word "death" in there. But based on my experience from that day, I had a glass and a half of cold beer and some respite from the heavy rain. Maybe they will open a location here in the SF Bay Area one day. If so, then I definitely will want to go there when it's a bit busier. read more

This is my review based on a visit last Saturday for some drinks. A friend and I were celebrating her bday and wanted to grab drinks before heading to dinner elsewhere. I work a few blocks from Death Ave and pass it every day. I understand there's a taproom, then a dining area. I made a res ahead of time with the dining section of the restaurant in case the tap room would be full, as it was a Saturday. I met up with my friend, and what a surprise! The taproom was full, and staff didn't bat an eye at us looking for seats. No sweat, I had a res next door in the dining area. We go over, it's seems a little busy. There's an event in the back event space. We get seated, and before I can explain to them that we just wanted drinks and not food menus, the server walks away. We waited a while before anyone else came up to give us water- this is when I explained we were just here for drinks. The server is abrupt, widening her eyes, and says she has to move us because there are people with reservations for dinner. I explained I made a reservation so why should it matter- no answer. Whatever. We're moved up near the bar. Once we get near the bar, we're pretty much ignored. No one brought us water, until I had to mention it. Same with napkins. And menus....? After we ordered our drinks (18$ each cocktail) they took the drink menu away. I was waiting to ask for a new menu but after 5-7 minutes of staring at servers ignoring us, I just grabbed one myself. A couple behind us left because they were told to wait to be helped, and they were there longer than us. I chalk up my experience to the event they were having keeping their short staff super busy. This was from last June -- Mandatory 20% gratuity for some of the worst service I've received in a long time. I wish I could remember verbatim some of the comments made by the deadpan host/waiter with serious RBF, who couldn't appear more miserable to be there if he tried, because you would think I was exaggerating his level of dismissiveness. From the minute we walked in his immediate reaction was,"...No." He saw the size of our group (eight people), and quickly tried to steer us towards going next door where we had just come from, because they didn't have tables that would fit our party. After we insisted, it took him a minute or two to suddenly remember that he could push the tables in the back seating area to make room for us. Funny how he just forgot about that. There were two other parties seated in the back, making a total of four other diners besides our party, yet we would later be forgotten and ignored. The host/waiter comes to take our orders, and halfway, he makes some weird comment asking if he got everyone because he had "stopped counting". Every one ordered a single entree with no drinks. There were exactly eight orders for eight people. It really wasn't as complicated as he made it sound. The guy was just over it. Maybe he missed the ferry to Fire Island that weekend. I had the pork belly burger. It was just okay, from what I remember. Our favorite host graciously checks on us one single time and asks us if everything is okay, to which I ask for water refills. He rushes off and never returns with the water. We ended up getting it from the guy who bused our table instead. A different employee (a woman) took the bill from us. They knew they were awful, and they knew we were annoyed. Which is probably why they charged the mandatory gratuity AFTER taking the card, rather than including it on the bill upfront. Although we found dishes like the burgers, cod fish, and chili to be amazing, most of us ordered the moussaka, and found been a disappointment - - - Not because there was anything wrong with the dish, but it was a unique interpretation, and nothing like our expectations for moussaka. I came here on the Fourth of July in a group of six, because my thoughtless self didn't think to call the restaurant I had made online reservations for to see if they were actually open... I imagine during any other day, this place is packed. The atmosphere is very sophisticated, very dark. The larger tables are given privacy in little cubbies with curtains. It was really pleasant. I ordered the steak skewers with their fries and the steak was perfect. It fell apart and was extremely juicy. I brought my parents and grandparents with me and they all liked it except my grandma - the flavors are a bit eccentric (which I love, but not everyone does!) for her. If you're down for some delicious, diverse food, you'll be happy here. The servers were magnificent and attentive and made great recommendations! I'm giving four stars because the menu prices are not accurate. The entree prices are bordering on 3 $ signs, so the two that show up on yelp are a bit misleading and nobody wants that surprise. read more

I am giving a 1 star rating for 2 reasons: 1) they intentionally mislead customers and 2) the staff is poorly trained. In my opinion, please consider this carefully before going to this place. And the bottom line: they try to charge an extra ~4% to your bill and you don't know until its too late. I recently went there for brunch with my girlfriend because I lived in the neighborhood for years and always wanted to try it. Food and drinks were definitely a little pricey but portions were big enough where I wasn't too upset at the value. When I got the bill, there was a confusing message at the top that paying cash would give a 3.95% discount but paying card would result in a 3.95% charge. Wait, so that's almost an 8% swing, something is going on here. And there was nothing on the menu or in the place that said anything about this. I asked the waitress. She wasn't sure. Wait what, how am I the only one to ask this? I asked the manager. She said cash payers would get a discount but there wouldn't be any charge for paying card. Ok, this to me is fine. No downside, only upside. So for my $75 bill, I paid cash. When I gave the cash, the manager passed this onto a different waiter, who was completely and utterly confused what to do. Do I give a discount? Do I not? He had no clue. He asked our waitress. She had no idea. Then he asked the manager I spoke to and after about 5-6 minutes, a transaction was done. My change? $5. Of course. Wait, I thought I was going to get a discount (I asked the manager again). She said she was confused and actually what they do is charge 3.95% more for any credit card transaction. This is where I have a problem. Basically everyone pays in credit cards. And they only bring this up now? If they clearly marked it in the place or menu or something (even being told when I come in), maybe I'd be okay. But just add the credit card cost to your prices. Don't nickel and dime me and only tell me when I get my bill. This is unacceptable. I asked, do others complain about this? The managers response: Yes I asked, ok, so are you okay with posting this on yelp, google,etc? She tried to explain the policy me again. I said, No, I get it. I'm just really confused. I don't think I'm going to come back ever again. She said "Ok" and walked away. No further apology or anything from her. So we left. All in all, this place is obviously trying to charge people extra money and only letting them know when they get the bill. Their staff is completely clueless on the policy. This place is clearly not ready to run a functional brewery/restaurant and need to take several steps to fix the problems they have. Hopefully after that, people can go back and enjoy this place. But unfortunately, I will never be back. read more

Its been a while, but I returned. A few years ago i came here for a yelp event and really enjoyed the decor and food. Greek-fusion is an interesting style and has some good culinary choices involved with it. I will start by saying I enjoy the tables here are more intimate than at most restaurants. They put you almost into the wall like a private room for 4 people. Its nice when you don't have to over-hear the people next to you. For my meal I went with Vodka Basil Gimlet to drink and the lamb shank that came with stewed peas and garlic mashed potatoes. It was a nice combination and I felt it was a fair serving of lamb. The servers were friendly and got the job done. Come here in the winter for one of the private-ish tables up front or on in the summer when the outdoors is open and popping. I do not recommend this restaurant! The service was absolutely terrible and the $20-and-up entrees (for lunch!) were the equivalent of mediocre bar food. It took 40 minutes to receive our food after ordering it, and the place was not busy. We were a group of 8, and one of the members of our party received her food after at least five of us had already finished, and after we asked them several times for it. We had to ask for water refills, and they never even cleared our plates. The restrooms had no toilet paper and no hand soap. When we got the huge check, we noticed that they had already added in a 20 % tip for themselves, which explained a lot. I will never go back to Death Ave. read more

Pretty subpar experience, and I'll explain why. I came here with colleagues for post-work drinks, and it's important to note that we came in 2 separate groups. I was part of the first group, and we were unaware that someone on our team (in the 2nd group) already reserved a space for us. So when we told the server/hostess that we didn't have a reservation for a group of 10, she was very dismissive and initially said that the whole group needs to be here. Not all of us were here, so we asked if we could lounge around for the meantime at a free table right in front of us. She flatly said it's reserved for another party. So then I stated to our group that we should go somewhere else, and as we were exiting, she stopped us and said we can sit there for now. Uh...okay I guess. Second group showed up, which is when we found out there was indeed a reservation for us on the other side (the layout here is weird...they have 2 separate spaces under the same name). Hostess/waitress looked super annoyed and rudely told us she'll take our drinks next door. Once again...okay, I guess. Things did not get any better once we were seated. Service was impeccably slow; some of us waited almost 20 mins for our drinks. Not to mention, the drinks themselves were quite watered down (do NOT get the sangria unless you want fruity water), and very pricey. Overall, a very unimpressive spot. read more

Stopped by around 6pm on a Saturday night and I have to say that the experience was great. I don't love the split setup of two different restaurants with the same name next door to each other as it's confusing but beyond that I found the experience satisfying. I went to the bar side and set at the bar to watch the game. Jimmy the bartender is a nice guy with a winning personality. He does a great job. The older fashion was excellent. One of the best old fashions I've had. The troufes flatbread was amazing. I added the Byzantian sausage and that was amazing too. Truly I didn't want to eat it all but it was so good I cleaned my plate! Surprisingly delicious. That sausage tastes homemade. Great place to watch a game and enjoy good food and drink! Death Avenue holds a special place in the list of my "go-to" places for the summer. While there are some evident difficulties for a vegetarian due to the lack of options here, the open beer garden in the back along with ample seating [both inside and at the bar] make it hard to be ignored especially during the summer. Without diving deeper into the menu options, I'll mention that if you're a vegetarian [or a group of vegetarians], note that the options are fairly limited [2-3 dishes at the most along with appetizers]. Then again, the staff is fairly friendly and tries to accommodate in whatever way they can by substituting the meat with other vegetarian options but one can only try as much ;) Outside of the menu, there are so many things to like about this place. As I mentioned, they have an open beer garden in the back which is wonderful during the summer. They have 2 different bars with so much seating that you'd be surprised at the amount of space for larger groups. The staff is wonderful, eloquent and fairly competent at serving food and drinks and yes they have a full bar menu with a number of cocktail options. My personal recommendation would be to visit this place for sure if you have a large group with a mix of vegetarians and non-vegetarians especially while organizing large events such as birthdays. read more

I came here with a few girlfriends for my friends birthday. There are two doors as one leads to communal tables and a bar and the other is for reservations. They also have an outside area which looked super cute. We actually arrived earlier than our reservations but didn't have any issues being seated which was nice. Once seated we were handed menus to look over. They have a pretty long list for cocktails, but I decided to just grab a glass of wine which I enjoyed. Two of my friends got the jalapeno margarita, they were warned it was hot and it was really really spicy. I suggest if you don't have a tolerance for heat to stay far away from this drink. As for food we decided to order a bunch of items and just share them. We ordered the following: truffle fries, grilled veggies, chicken tacos, steak, calamari. The grilled veggies and the steak with a lemon parsley sauce were my favorite. Perfectly seasoned and a nice portion. I didn't get to try the chicken taco but everyone seemed to enjoy it as well. The service was pretty good. The only con is that I think it's a little pricey for what you get. $24 for 3 tacos is a little steep and while this was fine to share, it gets pricey down the line without anything being out of this world. We had a tip added to our bill, but that was probably because we had a party of 6 people. Overall I might stop by for a drink if I'm ever back in that area but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back! read more

Steak skewers were amazing, As well as spread plate. Cocktails were great and my difficult friends asked to try a bunch of their onsite brewed beers and they loved the Crisp (I think). Loved! Don't let the name scare you. Nothing deadly about this place. The food is amazing and the drinks are great, also strong, which I consider a plus. We got a variety of appetizers and entrees to share and I didn't try one thing I didn't really enjoy. I live in the area and will definitely return regularly. My only reason for not giving this place five stars is that they were out of an item we wanted, the octopus, and they weren't initially as willing as other places to alter dishes or drinks to accommodate preferences. I've been here several times over the course of the past year. Each time, the service experience is odd. The first time, our waiter was subtly hitting on my boyfriend - fairly mistaken for being overly friendly I suppose. The second time, the same waiter definitely hit on my boyfriend, and ignored me, despite the fact that I was the one in our party to say hi to him and acknowledge we had him as our waiter the last time. This all would've been less annoying if he hadn't also so obviously neglected service to me. My order came out missing a dish, which I nicely inquired about, and the waiter only addressed the situation when my boyfriend confirmed that my missing item was the first thing that came out of my mouth upon our orders being taken. The waiter filled my boyfriends cup of water every time he passed by, asked the other person in our party for refill, and completely ignored my empty glass. The third time, we didn't have that waiter, phew. But we were sat in an area of the restaurant that's between the front and the back patio. It's sort of off to the side in no mans land. This was very evident when we waited 20 mins for a waiter, who only came after my boyfriend had to flag someone from the patio down. The service honestly isn't great, although they do try to make up for it once the bad things happen. So, shrugs. At least they're trying and take responsibility. What does keep us coming back in person and ordering take out is the quality of the food. It is pretty expensive, but dear lord it's freaking great. We've had almost everything on the menu, but the sliders (any of them) and the coconut shrimp are really great hits. Any food you get there will be fantastic. Perhaps if you go in with the mindset that service isn't up to par, but food makes up for it, then expectations and reality won't have such a large discrepancy lol definitely worth a try though.
