Very disappointed. I have been here several times over the past few years and hoped to make a good impression on my bf for restaurant week. Bad idea! Even with a reservation (was hoping to show the interior to my partner), we were 'tossed' at a table outside on the plastic lined patio near the cold door. The table had just been cleared and was missing silverware. Upon ordering the three course meal, my first dish was far from the description on the menu. It was roughly 12 leaves of spinach with a pinch of nuts and raw beets as a garnish. Hardly tasty with no taste of a "champagne vinaigrette". The worst part was the mediocre main dish of venison where I found PLASTIC/PAPER in my food. I was so turned off that I may have eaten some I instantly felt sick. The manager did address the issue after we complained but defended the plastic rather than making up for it. We refused an additional meal replacement because honestly the food tasted like my moms neighbors leftovers. Sadly the restaurant did NOTHING to comp our $100+ meal or give a discount for the debris in our food. Service was also lacking and chaotic, as we talked to several different people to get things. I truly wish I could take back our experience and go to another restaurant for our date night--waste of money. Unfortunately this is the LAST time I will be going to the Del Ray Cafe. Today, I decided to re-visited this eatery, almost a year later and am happy to report that they seemed to have worked out the kinks. Our waiter this time provided much better service. Del Ray's hidden gem! Cute old cottage style house made into a casual restaurant. 95% of the dining is upstairs with the kitchen being on the ground level. I went for dinner and with it being a small selection comparing to what is being offered for bfast and lunch. Perfect portions, well seasoned and great quality food. An awesome spot that has become a new favorite during COVID. They have outdoor dining with heaters, and a huge brunch menu for which every dish is delicious. You really can't go wrong with what you order! Great service, clean and cute restaurant ... highly recommend! read more

Great food, great setting and very friendly service. We came here for breakfast, and everyone loved their food. The eggs were cooked to perfection and the house was so quaint. We moved to the DMV from Miami about a year ago and our first local brunch spot was this gem. We later on tried it again for dinner and was again blown away. Came here with my wife for brunch around 11am. Parking was ample on the streets and the wait time was only about 10 minutes for 2 people. It was interesting to see that a lot of stores on this street were actually in residential neighborhoods within actual housing structure it seemed. The vice was chill and seemed welcoming to all kinds of parties and families. I got the Chipped Beef and my wife got the French Toast. Both were exquisite and delicious. Eh don't think it was worth it. At first I thought I found a great new spot! But... We ordered a mimosa and Bloody Mary to start. Mimosa was in the smallest little glass but cost $10. Should have been free refills. Bloody Mary cost $9 and tasted like vodka and a cheap mixer. No old bay on the rim not very spicy or flavorful. Tasted worse than the bloody Mary's I got for $1 at a brunch spot in Norfolk. I got the chicken salad sandwich and garlic fries. It was an open face sandwich. But I feel for Chicken salad you want a full sandwich. Pro-tip ask for the Croissant. My gf got the burger it was pretty good. It was a good size not overly huge like most places these days. Had brunch here with a friend on a Saturday. They were pretty busy but we got seated quickly. I ordered the SOS chipped beef dish and it was tasty but very rich. She got the burger and it was very good. Our waiter was not as attentive as I would have liked. We had to ask to have our waters refilled multiple times. To start... I was not at all impressed by the waiter (I think his name was Laurent - he may actually be the owner). We asked if we could substitute bacon for ham on the benedict and he got super rude and impatient. That made us somewhat uncomfortable the entire breakfast. We probably should have left at that point but we where hopeful that maybe the food would turn around our experience. We got the benedict with no substitution, it was fine the way it came but nothing to rave about. I had the French toast and trust me it looks way better than it actually is. I came here for breakfast a couple of months ago and was quite impressed! I decided to try having dinner and remain impressed. For the breakfast, I recall everything was delicious but especially the bacon. It was so good I ordered another side order to take home so I could have it again! Del Ray Cafe is a solid brunch, in an area that I find often lacking in good brunch options (we typically have to go into the city, which is a huge pain!) The food is fresh and high quality, you can tell the ham in your omelet isn't just torn up lunch meat but has a good thickness to it, and that's not just any old swiss either! Ingredients are a must. I'd recommend the omelets, as well as the [fill in the blank] benedict. I've had the classic and the crab, both were very good! Love that they're served on a croissant. There can be a wait. I've found the seating leaves room to be desired, as our first time we were seated on basically a picnic table, and the next time we were out on a screened-in patio area. I'd love to just get a normal table with chairs. Highly recommend stopping by. I am docking a star for service, however. I understand brunch is busy. We were quoted 40 minutes, I went up at 32 to check in for any update. The hostess snapped back at me: "We told you 45 minutes. You have 13 minutes left." Wow. Ok. This place is really good. But the WAIT, oh boy is there a wait. We waited nothing short of 45 minutes just to get a table-- luckily the service and food made up for it. The inside is also extremely tiny-- this place is a renovated home that has been made into a restaurant. So we had to wait entirely outside-- which was fine, but in the winter months... I ordered the crab Benedict and wasn't disappointed at all. It was hearty and delicious, loved the side salad they served with it. I will say that I ordered some of the breakfast potatoes, and I LOVE potatoes. These potatoes were served in a little pot that was drenched in garlic and butter. It was a little too rich for me. I have been to Del Ray Cafe twice now for brunch, and both times I have been very happy with the food and service. They only take brunch reservations for groups of 6 or more - so while the wait is a little long depending on your arrival, the food makes it worthwhile. When we had to wait outside during the winter, they had an outdoor heater on to make it a bit more tolerable. However, the checking in situation with the hostess at the front door is not ideal. They source their food from local growers and include as much natural and organic products as possible, so you are not only supporting a small business with great food, but many others from the area as well. All food has been great from here - meat, croissants, waffles, etc - so you can't go wrong. read more

My initial impression was bad because I made a 6:00 reservation and ended up waiting an additional 25 minutes to be seated. The owner offered us some champagne in the house, which was greatly appreciated. The food was absolutely delicious. We started with the burgundy snails (not something we would generally go for) and they were quite tasty. I had the tenderloin and my wife had the mussels. Presentation was excellent, the steal melted in my mouth. For dessert my wife had a creme brulee and I had an apple butter crepe (I also wanted the creme brulee, but they only had one left -- that was disappointing, but I got a few bites). About a week ago, we had a delightful brunch at DelRay! It is a quaint setting, refurbished old house, attentive wait staff and the food was delicious. Highly recommend the Crab Benedict and the French Toast. Be sure to ask for the jug of pure maple syrup...no maple syrup will compare. Honestly I don't understand what the hype is on this restaurant. I had dined here several years ago and promised I would never go back. So many people love the Delray café that I thought I will try it one more time. Once again I was very disappointed. The bathroom is absolutely disgusting. There was trash everywhere, no toilet paper, and a soap dispenser with out of soap and an alarm was beeping indicating as much. I had to look everywhere to find a staff member who actually cared. A Saturday morning and I'm not sleeping in? It's the worst feeling, especially after a rough work week. That being said, if I'm going to be up and somewhat awake, why not venture out for some breakfast haps. Weekend breakfasts or brunches should be reserved for making the most out of the day. Save your Starbucks or coffee shops for the morning rush or afternoon pick me ups. So I'm not gonna lie, this wasn't our first or even second choice for breakfast this morning, the First didn't open until 11am and was in Clifton, the second was down the street from DRC, but just had a weird vibe. When we walked up, I was instantly sold. The charm of a restaurant being built within the walls of a house are like kryptonite for me. We walked in and were told by one hostess that the wait was 20-25 minutes, I was ok with that. But then another hostess took us upstairs and seated us immediately, so, yay us. So the menu was full of delicious options, but I'm a sucker for a good Eggs Benedict, and the options didn't disappoint. Not listed were the two special options, those being a Lobster and a Fried Oysters Eggs Benedict. Well for me it was simple, I was going for Lobster. The other order was an omelette with the Scottish Smoked Salmon and some tomatoes and other veggies. We also ordered a side of Rotisserie Potatoes. I was so hungry, I avoided looking at the other tables orders. What I did notice how service oriented they were. Everyone helped each other, from taking orders to refilling coffee. But finally, the food arrived, and damn! I wanted what was on both plates, but no one wants a greedy foodie taking their food. Both plates came with a green salad and a small serving of fruit. I thought I'd eat the salad first just to get the pallet ready. Then it was time for the Lobster Benny. And good lord it was great. Just the right amount of meat, especially when you go to some restaurants and they charge you for Lobster and cheat you on it, but not here. The hollandaise was rich and creamy, and Then it was all on top a fresh baked, toasted croissant, and even its rich buttery flavor came across, enhancing the already rich and deliciousness. In between bites, I was feasting on the potatoes, I loved how they were served in a small pot, it helped keep the flavor. At some point I reached over to the other plate and took a bite of the salmon omelette. Yes please, I'll take another one of these please! The next thing I knew I was left with just the fruit, and even that was delicious. The blackberry was tart and sweet and I just had one. The meals were a success. We wanted to stay for lunch, but clearly that would be counterproductive. All in all, I think we'll try to find a reason to be in the Del Ray neighborhood, because after looking at the Lunch and Dinner menus were mouth watering all on their own. (xposted) read more
